Hi Clare I am a Padfield relation via my mothers side which i have been researching,As I have a William.Padfield born around 1806 died 1868 in Raglan Victoria Australia.
William has become a mystery as i find one in 1842 marrying Mary.Goldsmith Portland Victoria which i believe is mind who wonders off 1854 to the goldfields to mine as he's already well off
Owning a freehold and a large sum of money in Portland and Mary is sick so William went to keep up his life but he marries a Margaret.Darge who was married to a William.Lyall in 1853 in Scotland and travel to Portland Australia in October 1853 &arrived in January 1854 with a Daughter Johanah who is decease my Margaret Death Cerificate in 1884.
Margaret is the daughter of John.Darge & Joan.Neilson Scotland.
My problem this end is finding out if he was the convict William.Padfield who travel out in 1827 as William.Patfield Convict Life but pardon 1837 to Major Wentworth care.
Their William.Padfield charge with Arson but aquitted in 1830's was he made to travel because bad character is this my William Dont know Mystery.
I think we belong to a family tree William.Padfield&Mary.Cragg(Cregg)(Craig) as we are unable to find a John.Padfield&Mary Mother maiden unknown which was registered on William death certificate as his parent.
My mother is still living age 86 and the only living descendant of her family.
William&Margaret had 6 children Mary.Jane,William.John,Peter,Adam,David&Harry.Nelson and Margaret Daughter from her first Marriage Johahana.
Peter is my Great Grandfather and he married his brother Wife Hannah.Padfield nee White as william died as a result of a mining accident and Hannah was with child so Peter did the right thing by maarying Hannah,so Peter&Hannah had Mary.Jane,William.John,Harry.Nelson&Stanley.Alexander.
Harry.Nelson my Grandfather married Daisy.Elexsia.Hains.
and there children Alice,Stella,Jack&Audrey my mother and do believe these families in the early days did keep in contact with family heritage by letter but unable to get any information or nobody wants to give up because he was a convict and if that so so be it and also we believe a Mary.Padfield transported on the Gibert Henderson was his or Relation.
Nice to type this to you hoping we can help each other with Padfield family Clan who lived so Close together even here.

Hello Leah I have a William.Padfield born 1806 died 1868 in Raglan Victoria,Australia and by his death certificate he was born Bath Somerset and the only thing I have found on him he was well off married a Mary.Goldsmith in Portland,Victoria Australia and went out mining met up with Margaret.Lyall nee Darge born Scotland married Scotland move Australia on Utopia 1 1853 and arrive 1854,but the mystery is William.Padfield was suppose to have been transported as a convict under the name Patfield which i am not convince of yet,but i am leaning that he come off a William.Padfield & Mary.Cragg,Cregg,Craig tree and i think William went to America before Australia as he was in mid Forties when married. William was a common name and most went by there Middle Name like John like and William DEATH certificate here his Parent Were John.Padfield & Mary???? and his mother maiden name not known. Does your Thomas come off William.Padfield&Mary.Cragg as a Thomas was on there.

Hi Dennis, I am trying to trace Padfields from the Shaftesbury area of Dorset, in particular Henry Padfield, born 1791 in the Shaftesbury area of Dorset who married an Ann Barber, born 1794. They married in Semley Wiltshire,somewhere around 1812. It would be great if you help. I have dates and people from Henry and Ann to the present day. Would this be of interest to you?

I purchased a "lot" box of books in the the 1990's at a auction in Charles Town, West Virginia that had Engineering Instructional books belonging to Archie Padfield. He had written his name on the title pages. Also, he had instructional manuals from Pennsylvania which I assume is where Mr. Archie Padfield lived. Hope this bit of info helps.

Appeared in the Jan. 28, 1910 edition of the Lafayette (CO) Leader newspaper:

"Death of Wm Padfield.
Mr. William Padfield was born in Abersychan, Monmouthshire, South Wales June 2nd, 1850 and died in his home at Lafayette, Colo., January 20, 1910, aged 59 years 7 months and 18 days. He came to America twenty-nine years ago and after residing in the East for about two years came to Colorado and during all these years has lived at Erie and Lafayette. He was among those who first developed the coal industry in this district and has done much to make the towns of Erie and Lafayette.

Mr. Padfield is survived by his wife and two sons, Oscar at home, and Myron who lives in Wyoming, and by one daughter, Viola, at home.

The funeral was one of the largest in the history of Lafayette. It was held at the Congregational church the services being conducted by Rev. R.C. Byers. The invitation that was extended to the friends to take a last view of the body by Undertaker R.R. Powell, was responded to by the large congregation marching in solemn procession by the casket. After the services at the church the Masonic order took charge of the body and conveyed it to its last resting place.

The following were among those attending from out of town: Misses Minnie Sampson, Cora--Nellie Mainwarren, Lizzie and Bert Padfield of Denver, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Phennah and son Hayden of Erie, Messrs. Jardinelli and Phelps, Henry Clodius, John Mack, Jim Noland and Dr. Berg, of Denver, Mr. and Mrs. Drinkwater of Erie."

My thoughts are that William Lyall did not die shortly after his arrival in Victoria which is why there is no marriage registered for William Padfield and Margaret. I am not convinced the parents on William Padfield's death cert are correct. 75% of death cert are incorrect. My email address is

Hello Lynne, We have no proof of William.Lyall death we have came to that conclusion by the fact that his wife Margaret.Lyall (Nee Darge) married our great great grandfather William.Padfield in Hamilton Victoria in 1855 and they had Six Children in Raglan Victoria and Margaret and William.Lyall daughter Johanana born on Utopia 1 was already decease on Margaret death Certificate but he just might left her. No paperwork found on William.Lyall or Johanana death in Victoria.
All i know William.Padfield was Carter on Death Certificate and William.Lyall was a Sawyer and they might have work together in that mines Supplying timber.

I read Thomas Padfield's will on the internet. You said your Padfield married a Locher. I am researching the Lochers. Thomas took in a girl whose mother died in a flood. We're having trouble finding William PADFIELD he came from somewhere possibly England, ended up in Victoria, Australia possibly married c1856 to Margaret DARGE (or DARGG)(who had a daughter Johana LYALL from previous relationship) and she came from somewhere possibly Scotland born c1828 died 1884 and they had children including one Mary Jane PADFIELD c1856-1934 and she is my maternal great grandmother who married Walter JOHNSTON and William died 13 Nov 1871 in Raglan, Victoria, Australia.

Isaac Padfield in Devon

I have found a reference to Isaac Padfield in the 1891 England census. He is near Brixham in Devon. The trouble is that he left his family in his native town of Blaina, Monmouthshire Wales. I know he returned there in 1894.
Can anybody think of a reason why he might have travelled to Devon? He was a coal miner and I can't imagine that this took him there. There is a family story that he visited the USA. His step brother emmigrated there at sometime. Were there any sailings from Plymouth to the US?

Dollathy's husband was indeed Harrison Barnes and they had 2 daughters, Dollathy Maryann and Deborah who are both married and have two children each. James Jr.'s wife was Catherine. They had three children; W. James, Richard and Patricia. They are also all married and have children. The Joseph Edwards you ask about is a question for me also. However, I do have a record that indicates a "baby Edwards" that had died. This could be Joseph. If you would like to contact me directly e-mail me at plumbob84@hotmail.com. thank you for helping me out. I did correct Dorothy to Dollathy and Jane is Mary Jane. I'd like to ask you some questions, maybe you can help me fill in some of the blank spots I have. Does Dollathy have any children? I have her husband's name as Harrison Barnes. I don't have a wife's name for James, Jr. or children, if any.

On the Elizabeth Padfield (who was my great-grandmother). I found a child Joseph Edwards who was born in 1916-he is on the 1920 census, but he is not on the 1930 census. Do you know anything about him or what happened? I knew my grandmother came from a big family, but I didn't realize how many Padfields there were too! The only one I remember is Aunt Florence - when I was at my grandmothers, I used to walk down to her store & buy penny candy.

My name is Robert E. Padfield son of Robert Padfield, son of James Padfield. Based on the information you have given you have the correct Padfield. Mary's maiden name is Smithard. I grew up about 1/2 mile from your great grandmother who lived next door to her parents in Elmhurst, PA. Your Edwards grandparent would be my first cousin as, of course, would all his/her siblings.

Some corrections: Your great grandmother's sister "Mary", we always called Aunt Jane. Without checking my records, I belive her name was Mary Jane. And "Dorothy" is Dollathy, the last of that generation still living although not cognizant. She was the youngest of the nine. My father was the youngest of the boys.

James' father was indeed Henry; in fact Henry Dorrance Padfield. And, his wife's name was Elizabeth Jones.

My great-great grandfather is James Padfield born in 1875 in Pennsylvania. He married Mary (don't know maiden name) and had 9 children: Elizabeth (my great-grandmother), William, Mary, Stanley, Sarah, Florence, James Jr., Robert & Dorothy. I believe I found his father, but I'm not sure. Henry Padfield, born in Somerset, England, resided in Wales, wife named Elizabeth. My wife is also a descendant of William & Mary Anne .
Martha Eleanor Fiegehen born 28 Apr 1851 in ile -aux-noix Quebec is her great-grandmother . Our study of the Family is a straight line descendancy tree , because the branches of this family are so multiple.
I am particularly interested in William senior who came from England , specifically as to his training and date of posting to Lower Canada .
My information indicates that he went from there to Drummond Island before going to Penetanguishine with the migration in 1828.
Robert Parkes also deals with a common interest in his posting .

Can you tell me more about Reginald George Padfield and whether he was born in England or elsewhere?

The only Reginald I found for the right year was Reginal C. Padfield b.1914 in Westhampnett, mother's maiden name was Goble. I couldn't find a Reginald G. for those years.

Hi there Douglas Padfield. My name is Graeme Padfield - born 18 May 1977 - Cape Town. Brother of Linda Padfield - 23 February - 1967 & Lisa Padfield - 12 December 1965 - Cape Town. Father Michael Raymend Padfield - 23 October 1938 - Bristol. Grandfather Reginald George Padfield, deceased 1989 at 75 - heart attack - Carlton Center Johannesburg. Can find out his fathers name. Family emmigrated to Port Elisabeth from Bristol when father was about 9. Grandfather had amongst others, successful plumbing chain, played the sax in his own band. Father achieved highest job in Eskom as an electrical engineer. I design & manufacture lighting. Sister Lisa studied forestry nature conservation in Stellenbosch & worked for the WWF for many years & now doing 4th year Pshychology. Sister Linda teaches art at St Georges Grammar School in Cape Town where she studied fine art. Only Padfields in South Africa but have heard of but am unsure of the Durban name reference in Pinetown. Have a short printed meaning & origin of Padfield that was obtained from a commercial shopping center internet surname search. Believe family may have been in Somerset since recorded history & beyond. Legend of them even being druids!?

Were your Padfields living in Pennsylvania in 1853-1860's? My ancestor, John Padfield lived in Plymouth, Luzerne Co. and was a miner. I wonder if there is any connection. Because he deserted the British Army, he took his mother's maiden name of Lockyer as his own. I wonder if John Padfield Lockyer moved to Pennsylvania because he had relatives there or because he was a coal miner? Have you come across his name in your research? Thanks, Lisa

I have a Rebecca SELWAY born abt 1785 Stoke Lane she married Samuel PADFIELD 01 Oct 1810 Holcombe. Rebecca died 1867 Holcombe. Unfortunately, I also have not been able to find any parents or siblings.

I have William Selway b. 1790 Stoke Lane Ashwick who married Sarah Lewis b. 1788 Holcombe and they married 23 Apr 1810 in Midsomer Norton.
