I was so excited to read your message. My Sister and I have been researching our family tree. We have a lot of information from the census' of 1841, 1851 & 1861. Simon Pain (1801)and wife Mary (1814 born Weston-super-Mare) had Henry (1826) Joseph (1829) Mary (1832/3) Sophia Rowe Pain (1842 Elizabeth Mary Hurle Pain (1850) Jane (1852) and George (1857). We presumed that Simon Arthur Hunt Pain was a son born around 1824 and in 1849 he married Margaret Molineux in Winchester, Hampshire. At that time he was Sgt. with the 4th Reg.Foot. Their son, Arthur William Pain was born in 1851 and is our Gt.Grandfather.
We have been unable to find info. on Elizabeth Mary Hurle Pain who later was Elizabeth Taylor and lived at 2 Carlton Villas, Weston-super-Mare.(1901 census). We know she had 2 daughters, Jane 1879 and Mary Ann (we called her Auntie Ciss) 1881 both born in Rangiora, New Zealand. We cannot trace her marriage but she was still living with Simon Pain & family in 1861. Can you add any light on her. I am confused as to someone of her name living in Wandsworth. Would appreciate any help.

Interested to read about your family tree. Don't have a subscription to Ancestry which is where I think you meant your tree is posted. Would you be able to make the tree available via e-mail to me? I would be interested in discussing PAIN history with you. Jen

Thankyou for replying and your offer to look up your info. Was interested in an earlier posting of your's where you give PAIN history and places of movment in England.
Since doing my last posting have now confirmed that Simon Arthur Hunt PAIN was born 1824 Bristol. His father was Simon PAIN who was born @1800 Barton, Somerset and mother Mary Ann HUNT married Feb.1824. Simon was a pork butcher Bristol and Clifton who appeared to have married at least 3 times but unforunately don't have anything on his parents or siblings or history. Perhaps you may have some thing!
Jen

I know its a long time since you posted your page so hope you still look sometimes.
I am researching my grt grt grandfather Simon Arthur Hunt PAIN, think he may have been born in Bristol of Simon & Mary @ 1824. He joined the Army, married at St Thomas, Winchester to Margaret MOLLINEUX, had a son Arthur William PAIN b.1851 Weedon and as Serjt. Major Simon Arthur Hunt PAIN d.Jan.1858 Mauritius. His Daughter Elizabeth Mary was born later that year in Mauritius and then ended up in Royal Victoria Patriotic Home for Girls in Wandsworth, went to Ireland as a teacher, married and they moved to New Zealand. Arthur William PAIN joined the army, married and ended up in Dublin..
Does any of this go with any info you might have. Hope so as I've reached a stalemate and need help.
Thanks

Pain/Pin as a "dit" name for Bisson/Buisson in Quebec ?

In researching my family in Quebec, the BISSON/BUISSON name is often associated with the PIN/PAIN family name. Various members of the family appear with these names in the 1700s-early 1800s in several Quebec towns.

One example is Simon Buisson dit Pin, who marries Francoise Pichet, 20 Feb 1816, in St. Ours. Another is Alescis (aka Alexis, and Simon's brother), who is recorded as "Pin" when he marries in 1813 in St. Ours, but as "Bisson" when his son, Pierre, is baptized in Contrecoeur in 1825. Earlier ancestors are found as Pain (Charles, 1762 in Sorel; Francois, 1722 in St. Foy), or Pin (Joseph, 1789 in Berthier).

Does anyone know the origin of the "Pin/Pain" family name, either as a variant or a "dit" name for the Bissons, when it was adopted, and why?

HELLO, yes, they did get a passage partly paid, or else they worked on their way. When you look at the ships they travelled on, and read about conditions on board, I wonder that they did not get paid to get on them, but they must have just thought about the new life which awaited them, if they ever arrived. Many did not survive the long journey to the other side of the world. If the 1818 one proves to be yours, did any of his children have the names of his parents. Or, what did he call his children, as this sometimes has a baring on what his own parents and siblings were called.
