I don't think Henry H. Painter remembered his facts correctly.
I have records of George Painter born in Va abt 1791 not Pa and Sarah Mills born New Jersey abt 1790 not Va. He Henry was probably born in Zenia Ohio not Zanesville. He was pretty old when interviewed and probably didn't remember. Wikitree has info under Margaret Painter.

Was hoping that you might have information about Mary Ann Painter/Panther who was born 15 Jul 1833 in Rutherford Co, NC (according to death certificate) and died in Saluda, Polk co, NC 28 Jan 1915. She married John Pace (1830- 6 Feb 1865) who died in POW camp during civil war.
I can not locate her parents.
she has 2 death certificates. One lists her father as John Ponthen with no mother. The other lists the mother as Marth Panter with no father.

Donald Godfrey made a connection on ancestry.com to one of the death certificates so I was hoping there might be a connection.

She was my gggggrandmother.

any help would be appreciated.
Ricky Pace

Need Painter Y-Dna

I'm looking for Painters who have German roots to participate in a Y-Dna study through familytreedna.com. In particular descendents of Adam Painter who died in Columbiana County, Ohio in 1812 whose family is from the line of Adam Bender of Leacock Twp., Lancaster County. I'm working with the German church registers in Kirchardt, Sinsheim, Steinsfurt, Adersbach and Grombach, Baden, now and believe the majority of the Lancaster County and some other lines originate in this area. These Bender are the descendents of WolffGang Bender who was born about 1620. We know that 2 Bender families came from Kirchardt and 2 anothers from Steinsfurt, a Y-Dna match will prove they are all from the same line, since we know they are not connected in this country, and prove the lineage back to Wolffgang Bender. The other side of it is if you do not know which line your Painters come from a Y-Dna test can connect you to a known line in combination with your paper trail. The type of testing does not reveal medical or personal information, all of the descendents of a family line will have almost the same Y-Dna for every male member for hundreds of years and slight differences hundreds of years before that. They mail the test to you, its just a swab you rub on your cheeck and mail back in. I've had 4 matches to my test that in combination with our paper trails broke dowm all our brick walls and proved our lineage to the immigrant Bender, linked a Kentucky Painter family, the lines of two of the immigrants sons. Without the Y-Dna test it would have been impossible to prove, its a wonderful tool.
For more info email me: benderpainter@gmail.com
Mark

He probably started out as Bender, in German the b and p and d and t are interchangable the e had an ai sound. Mine went by Painter but the church records showed them as Bender
it could have been he just took back the proper spelling. I suppose it would be an easy way to hide your name if you had to.

I believe there was a George Bender that died early in Ross County so his family might also be in that area

Scotio gazette, Ross Co., Ohio 5 Oct 1815 Catherine Painter & George Painter were administrators for the estate of George Painter and sometimes they are listed under the name Bender. This family was there at a very early date so they cold also be a possibility. I don't have anything on them

Thanks. I'll look at these possibles. The interesting thing is that where Phoebe and James lived was at a place where Fayette, Ross and Highland Counties comes together, so if there are any others I should look at that were from those counties around that time, they might also be possibilities. James' family was in Licking County, OH earlier (1816-1826), and before that, Shenandoah County, VA (prior to 1816, the year James was born there).

Kind Regards,
Linda

If she came from this line these are the ones you would have to choose from. The children of Henry Painter of the biography are know, but the children of George and his sons may still not be, There was also a John Painter who settled there early, but I think he was from VA. Maybe there are church records that might tell you something. Maybe an estate or deed at the Fayette Co., Ohio Courthouse.
I notice you mention Fayette County, OH. I have been searching without success for the parents of Phoebe (or Phoeba, and other possible spellings) Painter, b. Aug 1820 in OH or PA and married 1841 to James Madison Stokesberry in Fayette Co., OH. Phoebe died in Fayette Co. in March 1902. I'm assuming she ties into the same Painter/Bainter families that you are discussing, but I don't know who her parents are. The only clue I have is a census that says both of her parents were born in PA. I've done research in the archives in Fayette Co., and in the library there, with no success. If anyone has any books they could check which might give me some ideas, I'd appreciate a look-up.

From what we have seen so far it appears that before the Revolutionary War many Bender families landed in or settled in Pennsylvania for a time then moved south into Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina. After the War it seems the migration patterns changed. They remained in Pa and moved west then after the Indian wars ended in 1795 moved north into Western Pa and into Ohio or floated down the Ohio to lands open for settlement.

Benders who moved into English speaking settlements often changed their names, according to Rev. Paul Miller Ruff who translated most of the SW Pa church records the name Bender said in the German of that day sounded like Painter, that and other variations such as Bainter and Panther.

Y-Dna and the Bender and Painter Projects also give some clues and with a sampling of 23 or more individual Bender - Painter German family lines we find most of them are not related. Bender is a trade name that many people took at the time people began using surnames. I do believe that there are family groups that may be related such as the Bender families in Kirchardt, Sinsheim, Eshelbach, Ittlengen, Durhen as these villages are within 10-15 miles of each other. We could easily find that out if we can find a participant for Y-Dna testing from each line. Also the testing gives you your haplogroup, the group or tribe your family belonged to at the end of the ice age and these also vary widely, some coming from the groups that made up the ancient Celts that lived in Europe to the Germanic tribes who moved into the area. Dna genealogy is very interesting and led me to three branches of my family that I had not previously known of and solved all of our brick walls.

The Bender - Bainter - Painter book's early Bender information is very flawed, some of the families do not exist, some of them are other known and proven lines cobbled together and that can be easily found out by double checking the sources. The man who did the research passed away before finishing his work, money was left for a person to put his notes together and publish the book. Huge mistakes were made and have been taken for fact. For instance on pages 9-10 children of George Bender and Katherine Hostetter children 10 and 12 Peter and Jacob were born in Germany sons of Christoff Bender who died in Plainfield Twp., Northampton Co., Pa, both of them remained there till their deaths,a well documented line, #14 and 16 David and John Bender are sons of Adam Bender of Earl/Leacock Twp., also well documented. George Bender born 1764 and buried in the Stuckey cemetery in Fayette County, Ohio, married Susannah Stuckey not Nissley. Henry Bender/Painter his brother did not serve in the German Regiment. You will find no mill at Chiques Creek associated with John George Bender's family. These are just a few of the mistakes found in the book and there are many more. We have went through all the tax records, deeds, estate records, church records, histories and anything else we could find to document the early Lancaster County Bender patriarchs and will share the findings with anyone who is interested.

We are still confused.

Some BENDER families that came to PA stayed there. Some migrated to the Shenandoah Valley in VA, especially to Strassburg. Out line of BENDER/PAINTER became PAINTER in what was to become Shenandoah Co., VA, and migrated on down to TN.

I know that there were several Adam BENDER/PAINTER people in both PA and VA. If you don't know how the name BENDER could become PAINTER, contact me.

(GermannaResearch@comcast.net).

I'm sick and tired of seeing posts here about BENDER/PAINTER from people who don't have a clue about the family's origin in Germany.

Yes, I have mixed up some descendant genealogies for one Adam BENDER/PAINTER and another Adam BENDER/PAINTER. But...
what we must clue in on is that those early BENDER immigrants were probably all related.

Some of you descendants of Adam BENDER/PAINTER in PA, whose ancestors moved on over to Oh and points West, have automatically excluded those BENDER lines that moved from PA to the Shenandoah Valley in VA, and which lines married into the Germanna lines in Culpeper and, later in Madison.

Folks, we're talking about the same BENDER/PAINTER families! The PA BENDER lines that ended up in OH are related to the PA BENDER lines that ended up in Shenandoah Co., VA, and some of which married into the Germanna families. We've just got to keep an open mind about the name and work together to unite the families.

Sarge,

My Germanna Database at Rootsweb:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=germanna

My Germanna Website at Rootsweb:
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~george/index.html

Select the deed book by clicking on the small button to the right of the box labeled "Land Records" & enter the page number on the page that loads.
If I remember correctly Peter moved to Wood County, Ohio? I'm from a different Lancaster line, we have been attempting to work out those lines to 1850 for something to do and to help find our lines that moved from Lancaster and other parts. Some of my line also spent some time in Columbiana County under the name Bender before moving further west. I have also been hoping to find male Benders and Painters who would be willing to participate in a Y-Dna study to see if our lines are connected in Germany. It also helps connect lines where there is no paper trail. I tried to abstract the early Columbiana Painter deeds, but the few viewers they had were being used by the Marsellous Shale gas and oil lease people.

Hi Mark, thanks for posting this record. I also have a copy of Adam Painter's will, which was written in February 1811 and entered into probate in April 1812, and gives a time frame for his death. My ancestor, Peter, shared in a bequest with his brother David in a 100 acre parcel that included the family home. I don't have the will here with me, but I believe he and David were also charged with taking care of their mother.

Could you please post the URL or the name of the website? I'd like to see those records. "Sarge" is correct, you can add attachments to your messages. I haven't done it myself, so you might want to ask him how to do it, though there are likely instructions on this website. Otherwise, you can e-mail those will records to me at Steve622@juno.com. I don't check this account very often, so please continue to post other messages to me here at Rootsweb.

Here is the transcript of Adam Painter of Columbiana County's Lancaster estate papers and the will of his father John Bender of Leacock Twp., Lancaster. Note his father left him $200, but left most of the estate to the younger sons of the family, they had to become adults before the legacies were paid. I don't believe there were any other Adam Bender/Painters that it could be if you check the census etc. I was in Lisbon, Columbiana Co, Ohio, weeks ago and all there was of his estate that I could find was his will on microfilm, the original papers are stored, there would have been a mention of this in that estate if the papers had survived.

Lancaster County:
Know all men by these presents, that we John Lightner Esq., late of Strassburg Township, David Clemson of Salisbury Township, and William Michael of the City of Lancaster, all in the County of Lancaster, are held and firmly bound unto the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, for the sum of four hundred dollars, to be paid to the said Commonwealth for the use of the parties interested in the estate of Adam Bender, late of the State of Ohio, but formerly of Leacock Township, Lancaster County, Penn., deceased, to which payment, well and truly to be made, we bind outselves jointly and severally, for and in the whole, our heirs, executors and administrators, firmly by these presents.
Hello MiaBeth1:

You know that here on the Message Boards you can attach files to your posts or replies. Instead of asking for email addresses and going to the trouble of sending additional emails with attached files, why not just attach the files here? There might be many of us who would benefit from such files, not just one person.

Just my slant on things,
Thanks,
Sarge
I have no problem sending documentation, but I will need your email address in order to send the wills that I've scanned. I cannot help you with your request for further information on the military service of Adam Painter since it is not something that I have researched. If the birthdate I have for Adam Painter is correct, he would have been 16 when he entered military service in 1777.

The German spelling of the surname is Bender, but the pronunciation is closer to Painter. Spelling was not standardized until recently so you may need to be fairly creative in your surname searches. I've seen the surname spelled: Bander, Binder, Benter, Panther, Penter, Pender, etc. in addition to the standard Bender or Painter.

Adam Painter (1760-1812) was born in Lancaster County, PA, probably in what was then Leacock or Earl township. They lived west of the current town of New Holland, PA. Adam's father, John Bender (1735-1809) was also born in this same general area. John was the son of the original immigrant couple, Johann Adam or Hans Adam Bender & his wife Maria Veronica Sauter. Adam & Maria were married in 1732 in Baden (Germany), & immigrated on the Ship Dragon in Sept. 1732. I do not know when Adam Bender (Sr.) was born, but he died in March of 1745. I do not know when his wife was born or when she died, nor do I know if she remarried after Adam's death. The children of Adam Bender & wife, Maria Veronica were:
1. Anna Maria Bender 1733-1819 md. Adam Miller
2. John Bender 1735-1809
3. Johann Adam 1739- ? (mentioned in father's will but died while still a minor)
4.David Bender 1741-1824 (md. twice & has a large, well-documented family in Lancaster County)
5. Elizabeth Bender (mentioned in father's will, but died while still a minor--I have no dates for her, so I'm not sure of her placement in the birth order.)

It should help narrow down the time frame for when he moved from Lancaster County to Ohio.

Hi Miabeth1. Sorry I didn't respond earlier, but I've been on vacation. If the information you've posted here is accurate, then you've helped me immensely. I'm not questioning your honesty, but I would like to see more before I accept your identification of Adam as the son of this John Bender. For example, I'd like to see those property records you mention, would please post the URL or the name of the website? The information I have is that Adam was a miller, can you confirm that? Were his parents immigrants, if so, then when did they arrive in North America, and where did they come from? In the PA Archives series, where would I look to find records for him, that is, which township in Lancaster County, under the name Adam and/or John, and Painter and/or Bender?

The Ohio DAR has identified him as the John Painter who served in the 3rd class, Philadelphia city militia in 1777. Can you confirm this? According to the information I have, he served in Captain Anthony Lechler's company, which was called up on 28 July 1777 for 2 months service, and was part of the 5th battalion commanded by Colonel Jonathan Bayard Smith. The 5th battalion served in both the battles of Brandywine and Germantown, but the latter battle occurred after John's term of enlistment ended. The sources I looked at were, Ohio DAR 1938, Official roster of soldiers of the American Revolution who lived in the state of Ohio, vol. 2; Roach, Hannah, 1964, The Pennsylvania militia in 1777, Penn. Gene. Mag., v. 23, no. 3, pp 161-230; PA Arch, ser. 6, vol. 1.

I also have three deed records for him in Columbiana County, Ohio that I obtained from microfilms borrowed from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. I don't have transcripts of the entire deed, only the location data as follows:

Musser, Samuel to Adam Painter, v. 1, pg. 138, 1806, Range 1, Township 9, Section 13. This was a half section he bought in Springfield township.

Painter, Adam to John Walker, v. 1, pg. 210, 1807, Range 1, Township 9, Section 13.

Snider, Michael to Adam Painter, v. 2, pg. 42, 1809, Range 1, Township 9, Section 13.

Thanks again for posting the information, and I look forward to your reply.

I was replying to a post by Steve in which the dates & names were already given (see below) & was included in a thread of posts dealing with Adam Painter who was born in Lancaster County, PA and died in Columbiana Co., OH. Adam Painter is listed as #1 in the outline given by Steve. Adam Painter was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania ca. 1760 & died in Columbiana Co., OH in 1812

"Catechumens of Rev. Joseph Bender b. 1791;

The Lancaster County archives have the papers associated with the settling of the estate of John Bender in 1809. The clear connection to the Adam Painter of Columbiana County can be found in the deed books (digital versions which are available for free on-line) of Lancaster County.
Sir,
This is just a hobby, something to do to relax and lower the stress level. There is no need to be rude. If you read through the conversation they are writing about the Adam Bender, Painter family of Columbiana County, Ohio, he connects to the Adam Bender family of Earl/Leacock Twp., Lancaster County, Pa. You have some of them mistakenly mixed up in your tree. Maria and I have been working out the early Lancaster County Bender families and have collected a considerable amount of source data that we glady share with everyone, all you have to do is ask.
Mark

Hello MiaBeth1,

Which Adam PAINTER? His statistics, e.g., dates/places of birth, marriage, death. I have quite an extensive database of the German BENDER family that became PAINTERs in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.

People, PLEASE, when you post something here give some data. Do you know how many Adam PAINTERs have existed in this country over the past 300 years!? And that's not just those who were born BENDER in Germany, but also those that were born PAINTER in England.

I guess sometimes I just get my shorts in a wad when I see such postings, where the poster doesn't give ANY data at all except a name. It only takes a couple of minutes to include the pertinent data for someone, and certainly keeps the rest of us from wondering who in the heck you are referring to.

I know that today most people just go the easy way and spend the least possible time in doing ANYTHING, but you would think that when corresponding about genealogy they could at least give SOME information.

Call me a curmudgeon, a stickler for accuracy, or just an old fart who doesn't suffer fools gladly; you want to correspond -- be willing to give a little.

Yer Maybe Cousin,
Sarge

My Germanna Database at Rootsweb:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=germanna

My Germanna Website at Rootsweb:
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~george/index.html

I found Jacob Painter B: 1884 Ohio. His father Peter Painter B: 1819 Harper's Ferry Virginia D: 1895 Ohio. I believe his dad to be Charles Painter B: 1785 Virginia and that is where I hit a wall. Can't seem to locate anymore information on Charles.
For Planity E.: B: 1855 in Indiana (I believe her last name was Smith) Planity married Jacob Painter in 1872 locationlisted as Adams Indiana, I found her also living in Willshire Village, Vanwert Ohio
