William Paintin of Bradwell Oxfordshire c1902

William PAINTIN of Bradwell, Oxfordshire. Farmer.

A document datedd 1902 on http://www.familychest.co.uk relates to 5 cottages in the Parish of Kencot, Oxfordshire, which are being sold to William Paintin for £105. This had been the property of Thomas Lock who left it to his wife Louisa for her lifetime, but failed to appoint an Executor.

Thomas Lock died in 1888 and then Louisa died but without ever having been granted Administration. Administration was then given in 1889 to Thomas Lock Simper, who was a son of Thomas Lock, but born before his marriage to Louisa. Thomas Lock also had 2 daughters, Althea Lock and Caroline Preston. We are also told that in 1869, Thomas Lock had mortgaged the property to William Baker for £200, which sum is still owing.

Accordingly, the sum of £105 is being paid to William Baker and the balance appears to be still owing.

Well after I had diligently researched the family back to the 1700s in Great Tew I put everything on hold while I went to university.

Now I've started again and I have mislaid a lot of the work I had done. So it's back to square one again *sigh*. Luckily I remember a lot of it!

I am decended through Ruth Painting born 1869. She had a son out of wedlock called William James Newell Painting born 1890. She married his father the same year (William Abraham Newell).

Would love to hear from any cousins!
(By the way I have posted on this board before under Victoria Painting - I got married this year and emigrated to the US hence the change in name).

Re: Painting

Hello Daryl. Your 3X gt.grandfather Jonathan Painton was the 10th and youngest son of Edward Painton & Elizabeth Broockes whose 1st son, John (Jonathan's eldest brother of course) was my wife's 4X gt.grandfather. Edward & Elizabeth
were therefore the earliest common ancestors of yourself and my wife. I think. I have not found, however, the birth/parentage of Mary Ann Syrott (or Syrett). The 1861 census for Charlbury has a William Painting age 67 with his wife Mary Ann age 60 born at Whitechurch,Bucks. With them then was their son, Joseph age 30 born Charlbury, still un-married.
I have not found that Joseph's marriage (if he is the right Joseph) nor have I seen a Joseph buried in 1857. I have 'him' buried at Charlbury on 30.6.1863. Is that right? Of course he may have married, lived away and died elsewhere. Did he?
Mary Ann's name could easily have been Syrett (many spellings of that name too) There is no Whitechurch in Bucks.now, but that could have been the present Whitchurch about 5 miles north of Aylesbury. There were dozens of Syretts in that area. Interestingly, Edward & Elizabeth's 5th son Joseph had a son Richard who married a Lydia Syret
(Syrott) at Charlbury on 29.8.1798. She was bapt.there on 21.1.1781 "the dau.of William Syrett & Ann, of Binton,Bucks".
That Binton was probably the Bierton, 2 miles NE of Aylesbury. On 22.9.1782 a William Syrett married Ann Greaves at Whaddon,Bucks.about 10 miles north of Whitchurch who could have been Lydia's parents if the dates quoted were inaccurate. So there is a Bucks. connection there, somewhere.

need some help tracking my Painting roots

I believe that my great great grandfather was James E. Painting. He was married to Nellie and immigrated from England to the US in 1885. They had 4 children: William (my great grandfather), Chester, Roy, and a daughter whom I'm not sure of her name. I believe that James also had an older brother named William (who was married and had 3 kids--Harry P, Helen R, and possibly Mirabel) and a sister (not sure of her name) who came to the US shortly after him. My grandfather was named Wayne. I am also related to a Delmar Painting but am not sure of how. All of above mentioned Paintings lived in the Cuyahoga Ohio area.

I don't really have any direct family on the Painting side left to ask about the family history so any help would be greatly appreciate.

Thanks,
Rachel

Yes, Dennis, I am very interested in your research, only yesterday I visited the Finstock/Swinbrook area of Oxfordshire again and have photographs of the grave of William (died 23rd Oct 1869) & Elizabeth PAINTIN. My grandmother was Clara Paintin(g) born 14th June1887 in Aston Birmingham, I also believe Ann Souch was the mother of this William Paintin.
Looking forward to comparing notes
Valerie

I am trying to find some info on a James or Joseph Painting, possibly from around Oxford, England. He was possibly married to Mary Gardiner (b.1834, Ennis, County Clare, Ireland)about 1850/51 when Mary was 16. Mary came to Australia in 1855/56 and re-married. Their child James Patrick Painting (my great grandfather) came to Australia when he was 13 in 1865/66.
Has anyone found any reference to Paintings from around Oxford at that time during their research? If anyone would like information about Paintings in Australia, please contact me.
