Just got a renter with that name and genealogy is a hobby for me. I suspect since it came from the Galician-Portugese area of modern Spain its name there PAIS has reference to the country or land. I thought at first it probably was paiX which is peace in French, became paiZ in Spanish because Galician Spanish is heavily Portugese. That to me is the most likely! That region was originally Celtic/Irish and they traded freely in medievla times by boat, so it might be even further back There is no Z in Gaelic so the s would be normal before the Portugese influence. Hope this helps. Francis

But we might be related, as all the
Paiz seemed to have come from Carlos Paiz de Monteseros (1724), Huite, Zacapa.

I know of 2 Paiz families that were given Spanish Land Grants in Mora County New Mexico in 1835. I do not know the connection between Guatamala and New Mexico's Paiz families. I know that the Paiz surname is common in Guatamala and New Mexico.I personally believe that the Paiz Surname may have been originated from the Surname "Paez". Paiz is not used in Spain, nor does it exsist prior to 1835 in the U.S. census. Any more information on the origin of the Paiz surname would be appreciated.
Ronaldo Paiz

PAIZ - taken from Mexico as a child

Hi. Trying to research my last name. My paternal grandfather, Dionicio Paiz, Sr., was taken from somewhere in (central?) Mexico as a young child, possibly during the Revolution, and dropped off in Texas. He took on the last name of the man who brought him here: Paiz. My grandfather raised himself. We don't know if a relative brought him over, or if he was otherwise kidnapped. Do you have any history of such an incident in your family? Thanks for any info.

Hi Stephanie, My grandfather's real name was Marcos Carrillo. However, the name of the man that brought him from Mexico was Dionicio Paiz, and it was this name that my grandfather used and took as his own when he crossed the border into this country as a child. We do not know what happened to that man who took my grandfather; we only know his name. Perhaps he was related to your father? It would be wonderful to know if, even if we are not "family", if we are "related" through some historical connection. Please keep me updated on what you find.
By the way, do you know from what part of Mexico your family is from?

--Veronica
