David died before 1851 in Rhonehouse, Kelton, Kircudbright, Scotland. About 1858 Barbara and her four sons migrated to Australia.

Any relation to your Palmers?
Jill,

I sure hope we have a connection somewhere here!

My grandmother was Elizabeth Palmer Aitken, said to be named after Lizzie Palmer, a relative of some sort. She was named this by her Scottish grandmother, Agnes Aitken (maiden name Christie)...we are not sure if this Lizzie Palmer was related to the Christie's or the Aitkens but I assume it must be the Christies as her grandfather Aitken was deceased at this point and Agnes had remarried to a Low.

The Aitkens and Christies were from Castle Douglas, Scotland.

As family "lore" would have it, this Lizzie Palmer (and we have a picture of her) was married to a Professor Daniel Bertin, who was the tutor to the czar of Russia, which would mean Nicholas II's father, Anastasia's grandfather. I don't know how true this story is as I have never been able to confirm it.

I do have a death notice for Daniel Bertin, written in French but he was a "knight of the crown of Italy" and the place of his death was in Italy along the French border. I suppose this explains it being written in French.

Do you have any Palmers that match up to this lady? Because Lizzie is refered to as "aunt" I am thinking perhaps that Agnes Christie's mother was a Palmer so in actuality, it is Agnes's aunt. Maybe you have a Palmer/Christie marriage or other connection you have run across?

Please get in touch with me as I am sure that we have a connection somewhere. The Palmer name is NOT as common as some Scottish names such as Aitken!
No I have not. I've hit a dead end here. I am Nehemiah Palmer IV, so my father, grandfather, and great grandfather all shared the same name. I was pleased to track it back so far and see that one of John Palmer's sons was named Nehemiah, though that is not the son that I am descended from.
Have you made any head way? I have my lineage traced back to this point (1790ish).

Nick
Nickpalmer@bellsouth.net

She lives near Laramie in perhaps the same house as once her grandparents. - Axel was born in Sweden 1864 and moved to America in 1880, He was certainly fit for the challenges he met over there. He had a younger brother called Gus or Gust but I have not found out what happened to him.

Elizabeth Player 1859), and MARY SARAH PALMER (b. 1848);

Also some of the children of John Palmer and Hannah Lush (m. 1844, Wiltshire), namely SARAH ANN PALMER (b. 1848), ELIZABETH PALMER (b.1856 – she disappears off the radar between 1883 and 1891), AGNES PALMER (b. 1860), and EDWIN PALMER (b. 1866 - in 1881 living with his father in Bishopstone, but no trace after that).

Most of the action was in Wiltshire, especially Coombe Bissett, and other villages around the Wiltshire / Dorset border.

Also hunting for PALMER / READ / EVERETT connections around Croydon (Surrey), Sundridge (Kent), Beckenham (Kent), Lewisham (S London), towards the end of the 19th Century.

Thanks

Ray Palmer
Henry "Hi" Palmer August 1, 1901; WI

I came across the following from the August 1, 1901 Hayward Republican newspaper in Sawyer County, WI. Upon examination of the 1900 census, it appears that "Hi" is Henry Palmer, born 1821 in New York and is living in Chetek, Barron County, WI.

I thought someone might be looking for him.

"Chetek's Hermit is Dead"
Chippewa Falls, Wis, July 31--
People who have in years past visited the shores of Lake Chetek will miss Hi Palmer, who for forty years had lived there. His death occurred Sunday in his lonely cottage wherein was but a bed, a chair, and a table. In this lonely cabin, situated in a jungle, Hi lived as a hermit, without friend or relative, and the monotony of his solitary life was broken only by the occasional visit of some camper at the lake.

He was one of the survivors of the Lady Elgin, the ship that went down in Lake Michigan in 1860 and cost the lives of many persons. On this he frequently dwelt at length. After his rescue from the sinking ship he came to Chippewa county, built himself a hut and from that day until his death he never boarded a train.

He was married and his family, consisting of a wife and two children were killed in a railroad wreck in Indiana. There were no mourners at his funeral. There was no one to weep for him for he had no relatives on earth. His body was laid to rest on his own property on the immediate brow of the beautiful banks of Lake Chetek.

I was interested in this posting as I have been researching a dear friend's family and this might be a clue to his Irish connections - do you have more on the Palmers of Killotteran Co Waterford?

I found something of Henry Gordon's family online

The Rev. Henry Gordon Palmer makes this note concerning his father, the Rev. John Palmer, B.A.

b Killottoran, Co Waterford; educated Trinity College Dublin; B.A. Dublin. Tutor, Presbyterian college, Caermarten, 1831-2; min Caermarten, Darkgate 1831-2; Dudley, 1833-52;

Colonial Treasurer, Island of Domenica, 1853-65; married firstly (1825) Jessie, daughter of John Dowse Langley, of Ballyduff, Co Waterford; Issue Aphra (d.1854); married

secondly Jane, daughter of Alexander Gordon, pf Straits nr. Dudley. Issue, Henry Gordon Palmer b. 16 March 1838, B.A. rector of Kilnanue, Co Wexford) Mary (d.1854).

d. 8 March 1869, at Waterford.

cf Notes by Rev Henry Gordon Pamler, 1898: Dudley, Old Meeting-house Register.

There are extensive notes on this John Palmer. In the Unitarian publications/1899_Midlands_Records.pdf

John Palmer, whose ancestor - one of the Kentish family of Palmers who came over to Ireland with William, Prince of Orange, was the eldest son of Henry Palmer, Esquire of Old
Court, Killotteran. Here, within three miles of the city of Waterford, on the banks of the river Suir, his early days were passed, and in due course he proceeded to Trinity College Dublin whither he used to ride from Waterford: on one occasion his mother accompanied him, the two being seated on a pillion. . . .

Best,

Howard

John Palmer , Colonial Treasurer, (1798 - 1869) buried in Ireland, he had an only son Henry Gordon Palmer Captain who latterly was Reverend Palmer of Ferns, Co Wexford. HGPalmer did live there and some of his children were born in Saint Helier. I have not seen any connection to the Maretts. However as yet I dont know his wife's name, perhaps Jane or Ellen.
H G Palmer's sons were Avary, Harry and Olive his daughter, his other children were born in Ireland.

My grandmother was Della Belinda Haley (married Andrew J. Cleek). Her mother was Pollie Vroman; her father was Alex Haley. I have a picture of Della if you would like it emailed to you. Also, if I have any information about my Vroman, Haley families, I would be glad to share them with you.

Thank you,
Donna Solomon Clark
