origin of surname

look under the History section--Peg inga burnam so the originator was someone named Peg or Pey or Pay (Paega in Saxon) and basically no one knows if the family who eventually took the name was related or just from that area. So there is no way of knowing--our particular Pangburns could have come from China and just took the name of where they settled. It is a geographical surname.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pangbourne

Another clue that it was just a geographical surname is the fact that some of the descendants of Pieter Pangbourne who went to Canada called themselves Pangman not Pangbourne. As in "man from the river Pang" not the family of anyone.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River_Pang

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River_Bourne,_Berkshire

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tidmarsh

this is where I believe Pieter Pangburn/ourne or his parents were from:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitchurch-on-Thames

I think Pieter is spelled that way because he settled in New Amsterdam and it was the Dutch spelling, I don't think he was Dutch at all.
And the first Peter Pangburn/ourne recorded was 1538 (102 yrs before Pieter was born) in OXFORDSHIRE not BERKSHIRE. So who knows when the family first ferried across the river? (or even if those two Peters are related!) (And just because one person called themselves Pangbourne does not mean they were the only ones to use the name or that THEY were related to any others--just all came from Pangbourne at some point!)

The best we can do is call it English and leave it at that. All we really know is where the name came from not the people.

nice website:
http://www.whitchurchonthames.com/

Catherine/Kate PANGBORN b. abt 1822 d. bef 1870 NY

I'm looking for the parents of Catherine who appears in the Ithaca, Tompkins, NY 1860 census as the wife of Matthew MEEK. Matthew is a widower in 1870. A son's d/c gives Catherine's birthplace as Ithaca, but there aren't any Pangborns there at the right time. Matthew was single in Elmira in 1850, and he had family in Schoharie County, NY. Does anyone have a likely Catherine/Kate in NY in 1850?

Also posted to Pangburn and Pangborn
Thanks!

Afraid I can't help! But was wondering if you know anything about the branch that remained in the UK. I'd love to build up my family tree but only go back to my great-great-grandfather, George Lewis Pangbourne. His son was William Richard P, and his son Cyril Godfrey P. They lived around Berkshire/Middlesex. Any help much appreciated!
