I'm travelling abroad at the moment so I don't have that much information on hand. but here is some background: Charlie Pope came to america when he was a teen, they claim all he had with him was a salami and 10 cents in his pocket. He married Josephina (her maiden name was Zito) when she was about 15 years old. They had 4 daughters and 3 sons. Salvatore, Donald, Albert, josephina, violet, anna, helen. All deceased. Charlie was an amazing mason, a real master and a very nice man. His father came to Connecicut for a while and worked with Charlie on various bulding/masonry projects but he went back to Italy. Charlie and his relatives were from Sessa Aurunca, Italy. A mountain town in southern italy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sessa_Aurunca
My brother knows much more about Pope history and I can send you more information. what is your email address?

hello,
I saw an old post where you mentioned Charles Pope (original name Carlengo Papa before coming thru at Ellis Island where they changed his name to Charles Pope. (I will ask my brother for the correct original first name spelling). He was a brick layer/stone mason master and started his company Pope Construction in Hartford, CT until around 1950. Charles Pope was my grandfather. my father, Donald Pope and his brother
Salvatore Pope started their own Pope Construction company and built commercial construction in the Harford county area into the late 1970's.
Let me know if you have any questions.
best regards,
Darryl Pope

Hi, there could be. So far I've been unable to find parents of Vincenza Tauriello (b c1829-?) who married Francesco Montano. So I don't know much about my Tauriello ancestors. I believe Francesco's grandmother was Margarita Tafaro (b c1749?) who married Vincenzo Ciccio, and that goes back pretty far. It's been challenging researching the San Fele area when my primary resource is the civil registration that ends in 1860.
Feel free to message me if you find any links!

Hi, So glad to connect with you. I'm not sure if we are related. All my Papa family came to NJ and stayed. Although I do believe that we are all related in some way. My Grandfather, Antonio was born in Avellino (Benevento) in 1899 and came to NJ in 1905. His parents were Giovanni (born 1868) and Assunta Palatella (born around 1870). They came over as a family. That's just one part of the family, I'm sure there are many cousins. I was just in southern Italy because I found other family members. They are all cousins. I'm having a hard time finding Papa's in Italy because the name is so common. There are many Antonio Papa's in Benevento. If you have any more info please let me know. I am so interested. Thanks for getting in touch. Diane

Unfortunately I only know of the name Livia Papa, and that she and husband Vincenzo Radice had (at least) two children, Michele (b 1859, d 1859) and my ancestor Maria Lucia (b ~1860). I'll keep combing through the films. If your tree is public I will take a look sometime.

I am also looking for info on the Papa family in San Fele... in particular a Livia Papa born around 1829, she married Vincenzo Radice.

I'm in the process of renting the LDS San Fele films. I'll let you know if I find any connections.
BTW surnames in my tree are Montano, Radice, Tauriello, and possibly Pierri, Frascella, Ciccio, Cristiano, and Tafaro (I still haven't found a certain birth record to prove most of those).

I also noticed that Grosso is one of your surnames - I have a marriage between Brigida Grosso, daughter of Andrea Grosso, and Sebastiano Montano in 1924. Sebastian returned to San Fele to remarry after his first wife died. It was her second marriage as well. Let me know if you think this is your Grosso family.

Good luck,
Heather

My grandfather, Gerardo Papa originally from Senerchia, Avelino, Italy was married to Maria Caruso and they immigrated to the USA and settled in Chicago, Illinois in 1904. They had six children Jimmy, Carmela, Alexander (Leezon), Lucille, Johnny, and Josephine. Jimmy and Carmela were born in Senerchia, and the rest were born in Chicago. All are deceased. It has been told to me that my grandfother Gerardo sponsored many family members, Papas and others from Senerchia, who immigrated to the United States through Chicago. He and Maria were members of Our Lady of Pompei Catholic Church in Chicago's Little Italy neighborhood. Our sur-name was changed to Pope during my father's generation, although I have never seen any legal documentation. My father was Alexander, also known as Lee or Leezon to his close friends and relatives. I never knew my grandfather but I fondly remember my grandmother.

Hello,
I am wondering if you may have more information about your family, including possible siblings, etc...

In my tree, I have a Nicola Papa, married in 1911, to Margherita DiGennaro. They married in Rhode Island. In 1920 they lived in Fall River, Mass. and later moved to Brooklyn, NY.

I also noted that there was a Carmela Tessitore that lived in the same Brooklyn neighborhood in 1930 and 1944.

Nicola Papa had a brother, Louis Papa.
Margherita (DiGennaro) Papa had a sister, Elizabeth.
Margherita's father was Andrea DiGennaro.
They all came from Santa Maria la Fossa, Italy.

I am looking for additional siblings, and any other info about these families. Can you offer any help?

Thanks,
JoeJuchem@MSN.com

My Hamby relatives came to San Luis Obispo, CA during the 1930a and we have found that they married into the Papa family. One of them even lives on Papa Drive!

But who are the Papas they are related to?

Philip W. Papa passed away in Templeton, CA 25 Jul 2006. His sister is married to one of our Hamby family members, probably Joseph Grant Hamby aka Joe G. Hamby.

If you are related to this family, please let them know that someone from the Hamby and Smith side of the family would like to exchange family information.

THANK YOU!

Martin:

If this is your relative, he was from the village of Senerchia. Does that sound familiar to you? If so, we have a mail list on Yahoo.com under Groups. Search for Senerchia, Italy, and you will find our mail list. Lots of great information there on many surnames from that comune, including Papa.

My name is Linda Papa and I'm trying to trace my fathers uncle and cousins .
My father is Gerardo Papa , and he has been living and working in the UK for the past 40 years.
I lost my grandfather in 1975 .My grandfather was Francesco Papa and he moved to the states with his brother Antonio .They had vineyards in the village of Senerchia .
Antonio stayed on and lived in Chicago where he had 11 children - his first born died at the age of 30 something - apparently he drowned and I have enclosed a photo , the only photo that my father has, of him and of a son who got married in Chicago ,Michelangelo- the photo I will be forwarding to you is of Antonios son and of Antonio himself with his wife -Ermilia also Papa! The address behind the photo is JANS PHOTO SERVICE -5712 SOUTH PULASKI-CHICAGO 29- ILLINOIS- PHONE RELIANCE 5-4122 HENSY JANKOWSKI
Most of the relatives were either shoemakers or worked in the lumber buisness.
I really hope to hear from someone soon , my dad has been trying for years to trace someone as he was very close to his uncle and when he left to go to the Uk at a very young age , his uncle wrote to him and sent him this photo - but through lack of time , he became a farmer and worked hard for a british family , he couldn't find the time and strength to keep in touch .

Regards

Linda
