I am most interest in your Harold. I do not have additional information for you. I have a Walter Francis Papworth b. 1886 in Madras Presidency, India. He married a Helen Marguerite Guest. Walter also worked for the Indian Education Services. Walter's parents were John W. Papworth b. abt 1856 and Mary Unknown.

Does anyone have any information on Harold? I think that he was born in India, and he definately spent his early days in India within the Indian Education Services. Harold married Gladys Emily Muirhead 26th Feb 1916 in India. Gladys Emily Muirhead was born 29th Jan 1887, died 24th July 1965 in Putney London. They had one child to my knowledge called Yvonne Gladys Papworth born 1917

Hi Stuart - just been researching the female line of my family tree. My great grandmother is Minnie Ball daughter of Henry Ball and Jane Fox - she was born in London when the Ball family moved there. Minnie then met and married my great grandfather Charles Tompkins from whom I am directly descended. I was interested to find that Henry Ball was born in Bluntisham, Cambs which happens to be 2 miles from where I live! I was born and brought up in Guildford. Would be interested to hear your link and if you know of anyone still living in this area.

Hello, I have been trying to find the birth place Of my ancestor William Papworth. He married Mary Ann Muckley in 1815 at Shoreditch, Hackney. They had five children: James Papworth born abt 1818, in Fashion Street, Spitalfields, Middlesex, England, Mary Ann Papworth born abt 1819 in Spitalfields Christchurch, Stepney, London. Eliza Papworth born 1822 in Tower Hamlets, John,1830 in Spitalfields, William, about 1930 in Spitalfields.

I have one Papworth in my tree but know very little aprt from that she came from Cambridge and married a John Farrington in 1714 (boxworth Cambridge)

I bought it when I lived in Derby, so not very far. It later moved to Cardiff, Cambridge and now lives just outside Colchester.
I couldn't find anything on the web about Sanders Papworth Co. but he did compose music too. Have you been to Alfreton Road? I wondered if there was anything there now.

My Mother was a Papworth from Yorkshire. She was descended from John Papworth, born about 1769 in Cambridge. As John married in York in 1797, was he the first Papworth in Yorkshire?

William Ernest Sanders Papworth was born in Bedford in 1877. Moved to Alfreton Road, Nottingham in 1916. Taught music lessons. Wife's name was Pem (?). Daughter Lillian born 1903, maybe in Leicester, married someone with surname Rose. This is all I know. As of 1949 was still on Alfreton in Nottingham.

I also have Papworth connections. My Great Grandmother Jane Charles, nee Stillwell. Her second husband was Harry Papworth. His father was Charles Papworth. Charles is shown on the 1881 census as age 50, born Town, Huntingdon.

Jessie Papworth in Howell, MI--connection to Sowle/Carl family

My grandmother, Marcia Ann CARL, had deep roots in Michigan, especially Howell and Livingston County. (I see possibility that some of my distant Michigan relatives might be posting here!) She had an “uncle”—although we have good reason to believe he was her half-brother-- FRED SOWLE, who married JESSIE PAPWORTH in 1921, Livingston County. I have a (scanned) baby picture of their daughter, MARY ELIZABETH SOWLE b. 1925, if anyone is interested.

Additionally, I have several unidentified photographs that belonged to my grandmother, and I suspect Fred and Jessie are among them (Jessie is mentioned in my Grandma’s diary). Is there anyone who might recognize and help me identify them? I’m interested in any information about this family, would like to know what happened to them.

Just starting to research a Papworth family. My group is as follows:

Friend John Papworth born c1801 (parents were Friend John Papworth and Elizabeth)in Knapwell, Cambridge. He married to a Sarah ? born in Birmingham. Children of this couple include:

Eliza born c 1834
Friend John c1837
Elizabeth c1839
Sarah c1842
George c1844
William c1847
Ephriam c1854

All children born in Holborn, England where Friend's occupation was porter.

Elizabeth Papworth born c1839 married to Sellis Freshwater and this is my direct line.

Elijah Papworth and Ruth Warrington married 17 Feb 1852 at Alconbury. Children were Joseph born abt 1853 married Elizabeth Hadby, Jabez bap 19 Aug 1856 buried 16 Sep 1856 at Alconbury, Jabez born 9 Sep 1857 married Eliza Peckham, David born 1860 and buried 4 Feb 1864 at Alconbury, John born 1863 married Sarah Ann Bales, Fred born 5 Apr 1866 emmigrated to America with his mother and married Ada, Emma born 7 Jan 1869 and Elizabeth born 23 March 1872.
Elijahs parents were George Papworth and Mary Smith married 24 June 1817 at Alconbury. Ruth Warrington was born December 1831 daughter of John and Elizabeth Warrington

Yes, please, I would like to know more. My grandmother always said her grandmother's last name was BUTLER and then someone said no it was WAR(R)INGTON. My grandmother always said they had a Jewish lineage, but so far I can't find it. My grandmother said the PAPWORTH"s went to India in the military and stayed to be cotton brokers. I would ask my grandmother these questions often and they always stayed the same. She passed away 20 years ago and I can't ask questions that I would like to. Thank you for your time and God bless.

Interestingly Elijah and Jane had a son Henry Ball who married a Jane Fox so there are clearly a number of links between the families.

My Great Great Great grandfather was John Papworth, born abt 1798 in Great Paxton, Huntingdonshire, died
about 1849 in Great Paxton.

He had 2 wives and 10 children. Alfred and Amos being only two of them.

Searching for any descendants and connections to family of Martha CALVIN, born 1849 Kilmarnock, Scotland, daughter of William Calvin of the Royal Artillery (c. 1821-1865) who was originally from Co. Monaghan, Ireland.

Martha CALVIN married Henry PAPWORTH in 1878, St. George's Hanover Square, London.

Their children as listed in censuses 1881-1901:

1. Harry Papworth, born abt. 1879 St. George's/London, Middlesex
2. Clara M. Papworth, born abt. 1882 Westminster, Middlesex/London
3. Kate G. Papworth, born abt. 1887 Lambeth, Surrey/London

In 1901, "Martha Calvin" was a widow, age 51, born Scotland, a "Lodging House keeper" in St. Andrew's Parish, Northeast Fulham, London. Her three Papworth childrens were still in the household, as were several lodgers and visitors.

Martha's cousin John Alexander Calvin, headmaster of a boys school in Magharafelt, wrote from Ireland in 1911 that he had visited in earlier years with his Calvin cousins who lived "about London" (the 4 children of Wm. Calvin of the Royal Artillery) but he thought that they were all dead by that time.

Any information on Martha Calvin Papworth's family and descendants would be appreciated.

Emma Papworth born approx 1827 London, Mile End Old Town was the daughter of a shoemaker (Thomas Papworth).
Her husband Henry Josiah Ayris was a bootmaker who was born in approx 1828 in Middlesex.
Emma and Henry Josiah had at least six children. Sarah Elizabeth my great grandmother, Robert, Henry Josiah Jnr, Emma jnr, Thomas and James Thomas.
Does anyone have any information on this family.

Hi I have some of these names in my family line. I can go back as far as Richard Papworth 1721-1761 married Mary Silk (Huntingdon) who had 11 children John 1743, William 1744, Thomas 1745, Richard 1747, Henry 1750, Charles 1754, Edward 1756, James 1758, George 1759 ( my line) and Radford 1761.

George married Mary Shilton 1783 in Bedfordshire and they had 7 children - James 1784 ( my line) , Radford 1789, George 1791, Frances 1793, Mary 1794, George 1796 and Charles 1798.

James married Susan Oakley 1804 and then Ann Larkens 1836. With Susan he had John 1805, Elizabeth 1807, Mary 1809, William 1813 ( my line), Charles 1819, and James 1823.

William married Juliana Judge 1831 and then Sarah Salt (Sault) 1848 and they emigrated to Australia in 1855.

Papworths/Kemptons from Boxworth

I'm looking for any information on the Papworth family from Boxworth, Cambs. Charles Papworth married an Eleanor (Ellen) Butcher. They had a daughter Ann and a son Job. At age ten or there abouts Job moved in with the Kempton family. The Kempton family, Edward & Mary Butcher Kempton, along with Job Papworth sailed to the US and ended up in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

I am trying to trace my recently deceased father's family. His name was Frederick Albert Papworth and he was born in Saffham Norfolk in 1919. I believe he was raised by his grandparents, Mary and George Papworth who may have been farmers in Kings Lynn. My father emigrated to Australia in 1949. The surname Buckingham may also be relevant.
