He died in 1949 and she died in 1987 late nineties. I knew her when she was in her nineties.

Jenny

I am looking for any info about my great-grandfather Alfred Parkes. I know he was born in Northern Ireland in 1870 and immigrated to Canada (Montreal via Quebec) on 20 Jul 1883. He married his wife, Elspit Croll, in Montreal and had at least four children -- two boys who died very young and 2 daughters- 1915 Kathleen Parkes (Atchison) (my grandmother) and 1913 Ellen Clarinda PArkes (Powley).

I am hoping to find out info about his parents or his siblings. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jennifer

I have very little info on Harry other than he was my father's brother (my uncle). My father didn't have much to do with his family after 1956 (before i was born). For this reason i have very little knowledge on the Parks/Parkes family. I believe my Grandfather's name was Albert and my Grandmother's name was Ethel (Hyde). I can't find Albert Parks on any census but know he was born about 1890. I don't know any siblings of Albert. Sorry i couldn't be more helpful.

Joseph Parkes family of Rowley Regis

I am looking for information on the ancestors of the following family--Joseph Parkes was born about 1802 in Staffordshire. His wife, Mary, was born about 1805, also in Staffordshire. I have found several possible marriages of a Joseph Parkes to a Mary: Joseph Parkes to Mary Dunn, 15 Aug 1824, Rowley Regis, Stafford; Joseph Parkes to Mary Adams, 22 May 1825, St. Thomas, Dudley, Worcester; Joseph Parkes to Mary Margary Holden, 26 Dec 1825, St. Peter, Wolverhampton, Stafford; Joseph Parkes to Mary Cooper, 1 Mar 1824, St. Peter, Wolverhampton, Stafford; Joseph Parkes to Mary Edge, 8 Nov 1824, Great Barr, Stafford; and Joseph Parkes to Mary Henn, 23 Nov 1823, St. Phillips, Birmingham, Warwick (unlikely, but possible)

Joseph was an iron worker--the 1850 US census says he was a forgeman--and a family bio in a Bay View, Wisconsin book says that his father was also an iron worker.

The children born in England were: Henrietta, born Rowley Regis and baptized at St. Michsel's Church, Brierley Hills 10 Dec 1826; Josiah, born Rowley and baptized Cradley, Worcestershire 27 Jan 1828; Sarah, born Brierley Hills and baptized at St. Michael'd Church, Brierley Hills 27 Dec 1829; John C., born Brockmoor 27 Jul 1831, and baptized at St. Michael's Church, Brierley Hills 14 Aug 1831

I believe Joseph emigrated to the U.S. about 1832. Mary and the children came in July 1833.

Children born in the U.S. were: George W., New York, 1834; William Beekley, Saugerties, New York, 19 Mar 1838; Charles Theodore, Troy, New York, 19 Aug 1842

Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Marian
Hi, i'm hoping some family members are out there who can help. This is my family, Albert Parks/Parkes 1891-1940 married Ethel Emma Kettle/Hyde 1894-1961 (her family changed their name sometime between the 1891 and 1901 census). Albert and Ethel had four children, Albert William Bernard (Bill) 1912, Southwark. Kathleen EL (Kitty) 1914, Barnet, Harry AC 1917, Chertsey, Reginald RF (Ron) 1922, Chertsey. I have a marriage cert for Albert and Ethel, 7th April 1912 and also a death cert for Albert 1940 Bournemouth but i am unable to find a birth record for him. I'm wondering if he was born under a different name. If there is anyone who might be able to help please get in touch. Many thanks.
Rachel

Welsh ancestry in Parkes family in Staffordshire

I am researching members of the Parkes family living near Dudley in the Black Country iron-mining area in Staffordshire/Worcestershire.

In reading about iron mining in the area--and specifically about puddlers and forgemen, which several of my people were--it seems that many are of Welsh ancestry. It also seems that they kept their identity as "Welsh" even after several generations in England.

Does anyone have any insight on this?

Thanks.

Marian

I have been trying to piece-together the various Parkes family from that area--so far without success.

The specific Parkes family I am interested in said they were from "Dudley" but were listed as living in Rowley Regis, Brierley Hill, and Brockmoor when the various children were born (1826-1831).

The family is: Joseph Parkes, b. abt 1801, married to Mary Dunn, b. abt 1803, on 15 Aug 1824 in Rowley Regis. Children born in England were: Henrietta, bap. 10 Dec 1826; Josiah, bap. 27 Jan 1828 (and said in the 1900 US Census to have been born in Jan 1828); Sarah A., born 4 Dec 1829; and John C., born 27 Jul 1831. Mary and the children immigrated to Saugerties, NY in 1833. Joseph came before, probably about Sep 1832.

I also have a Sarah Parkes Beckley, b. abt 1800, who married William Beckley on 7 May 1820. Sarah must be related to Joseph--she and her children immigrated with Mary Parkes and one on Joseph and Mary's sons was named after William Beckley--but I haven't found any parents with a Joseph and a Sarah about the right ages.

Both Joseph Parkes and William Beckley were listed as "Forgeman" at the baptisms of their children. Reading about iron-mining in the Black Country and also in Saugerties, NY, it appears that they must have been "puddlers" and that many of the puddlers were of Welsh ancestry. Does anyone know more about that? (I'm also going to post a separate message asking about Welsh ancestry.)

Marian

In the 2 1/2 years of effort since I first posted this, all I've managed to learn is that Mary's maiden name was Dunn.

On the ship with Mary Dunn Parkes and her children was a Sarah Parkes Beckley, wife of William Beckley. William was also a forgeman. I suspect that Sarah might have been a cousin of Joseph, rather than a sister, since I'm not finding births to the same parents.

Any information on any of the families would be appreciated.

I had a great-grandfather by the name of "Samuel PARKES" (b. abt. 1846 in Ireland, but who came to Canada in 1864) who had a son by the name of "John Charles PARKES". These names can be found in the Toronto area in Ontario, Canada. Although, there is a possibility that Samuel might have gone to the U.S. when his wife died in 1885 in Toronto, since we cannot find any reference to him after that.

John Charles PARKES was born March 6, 1878, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, but he may have followed his father to the U.S.

Dear Marian,

I have an ancestor Mary PARKES who married James WALKER. I believe they are the couple who married in Sedgley, Staffordshire in 1824 although another couple of these same names married in Old Swinford, Worcestershire in the same time period. Mary's birthplace was given as Rowley Regis, Staffordshire in one of the censuses and she was born about 1800. I don't know the names of her parents either but she is a similar generation to your Joseph. James and Mary WALKER lived in Dudley, England and I'm descended from one of their daughters who emigrated to the United States after the Civil War.

In reviewing a January 14, 2001 post to the STAFFORDSHIRE Rootsweb list by Sue Challenger that included the likely marriage of my ancestors on December 31, 1824, I saw a marriage on May 7, 1820 in Sedgley for a William BUCKLEY and a Sarah PARKES. I wonder if this BUCKLEY could be a misreading of BECKLEY? Does that fit with what you know of the BECKLEYs agewise?

Unfortunately, I don't think there is a good match for your Joseph and Mary in that Sedgley list of marriages. There is a January 30, 1814 marriage of a Joseph PARKES and Mary FELLOWS, but I gather this is early for your couple. Perhaps you'd want to check out that post and maybe you'd spot something familiar.

This post didn't give witnesses or other information and I haven't looked at any Sedgley church records myself. I have looked at a microfilm of Old Swinford records, but think Sedgley is the more likely location for my ancestors' marriage. I have found the PARKES name quite common in this region and hard to sort out, but there are avenues I haven't fully explored yet.

Best wishes,
Karen

Thanks, Maria is certainly a possibility . . . I'll investigate it further. If Mary Anne was a daughter, she wasn't living by the time they emigrated.

Mary's maiden name wasn't even given (or asked for) on her own death certificate in Chicago in 1888. There are obituaries of several of the sons, plus biographies written while they were alive. None mention her maiden name (in fact, barely mention her at all).

I have checked all the existing death certificates and marriage licenses for her children--if they ask her maiden name, the answer is "don't know" or it's just left blank. I am still looking for the death certificate of one daughter, Sarah Parkes Mayhew, who died sometime between 1900 and 1910. She was living in Evanston, Ill. in 1900 and her widowed husband was still there in 1910. There certainly should be a death certificate, but I haven't found it.

Joseph was a forgeman working around iron mines. They went first to New York--Troy and Sauguerties. They then moved around quite a bit--from censuses and biographies I have them in Pennsylvania, Virginia (the area is now West Virginia), Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin. By about 1865, all the family was in the Chicago or Milwaukee areas. Joseph and Mary lived in Milwaukee for several years, but died at the home of a son in Chicago.

Thanks for any help.

Marian

Dear Marian,

In looking at the batch number, C030156, in which Henrietta BECKLEY's baptism was found, I also found a Mary Anne PARKES, christened 8 Jun 1824, Brierly Hill, Stafford, England with father Jos. PARKES and mother Maria PARKES. This may be an older child that you don't list and perhaps the Maria as opposed to Mary might be a clue for you. And then again, there are lots of Josephs and Josiahs and Mary and variants in this area.

Did any of the children live long enough to perhaps have an obituary written about them that gives the mother's maiden name? Or a death certificate with the mother's maiden name? Where did this PARKES family go?

Best wishes,
Karen

I have found information about the Parkes family I am looking for, but still can't connect them back to the right family in England.

I am researching Joseph and Mary Parkes, whose first 4 children were born in England (Henrietta, 1826; Josiah, 1828; Sarah, 1829; and John, 1831). Mary and the children emigrated in 1833--Joseph came ahead, but I haven't found him yet.

With Mary on the ship was Sarah Parkes Beckley, wife of William Beckley. I assume that Sarah must have been Joseph's sister. The Beckleys also named their first daughter Henrietta--she was baptized 23 May 1825 in Brierley Hill (which is where all Joseph and Mary Parkes' children except Josiah were baptized).

Another Parkes who named the first daughter Henrietta was John (married to Jane), born about 1806 in Brierley Hill (according to the 1851 UK census).

I would love to contact anyone who has information on any of these families.

Marian

Very interesting, I didn't know that the Parkes was such a popular name in those parts. I am beginning to trace my mom's family history for her and would be very interested to know if anyone know's anything.

Her mother Nelly Gertrude Parkes (my maternal grandmother) was born at the turn of the century and died in 1938. At the time of the 1901 census, her grandad (my great-grandad Joseph Parkes) was registered as living in St. James Terrace in Dudley, and was married to Esther Anne Parkes (maiden name Greenaway). I am really keen to find the whereabouts of Esther's grave (Joseph's buried in Birmingham) and what became of my mom's brother (Ernest Parkes), who if still alive would be 89! My mom was adopted and obviously has a lot of questions that need answering, for example she has never seen a picture of her mom.

Really looking forward to solving the mystery!

Re: PARKES WEBSITE ON MYFAMILY.COM!

I purchsed a Parkes Family Bible. I was hoping that it had names of some of my Parkes relative. But, no such luck. The Bible belonged to "George Parkes and Mary E. Russell" who were married on November 17, 1852. Also, listed in the Bible are their children: James b 9/21/1864, Sadie b 9/30/1862, John b 8/3/1860. Their are more names. If anyone could claim this I would be happy to ship it to them.
Reduced price for DNA testing

As group administrator of the Park/e/s DNA surname project, I’d like to pass along news about a limited-time price reduction for DNA testing from our testing firm. Unfortunately, we receive very little or no advance word of these promotions, so as you can see the limited time price reduction begins today and only runs to June 24th, 2009.

Offer summary:

• Y-DNA37+mtDNA for $119. (The regular project price is $248 – a reduction of more than 50%)
• The promotion will begin on June 9, 2009 and will end on June 24, 2009
• Kits ordered in this sale must be paid for by June 30, 2009

If you have been considering Y-DNA testing for your Park/e/s line, this is an excellent opportunity to get a 37 marker test at a greatly reduced price, and I would urge you to order before the deadline. If you have any questions about Y-DNA testing for genealogy, or the order process, feel free to email me at: kenparks@earthlink.net

To order a test and join the Park/e/s DNA surname project:
http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Parke
