Hi there,
i've just purchased an old copy of Robinson Crusoe that was published from 1890 - 1893, inside the front cover is written "Arthur Parkins, his book, Great Wakering, Essex."
I just Googled his name and town and found you on Ancestry. Seeing Arthur was born in 1879 I assume he was given the book as a young boy.
Hope this proves of interest, just thought I'd let you know,
Cheers

Parkins is quite a common name in England. My decendants are Parkins, and I am having some trouble tracing them. I don't know about being Scotish, but there are a lot of Parkins in England. My Parkins side originates from Essex.

Census records are a little difficult to verify, as the spelling changes. I have found family that has been spelt
Parkings, Pirkins, Perkins, Purkins.

Good luck with your search.

You may wish to look under Perkins for a surname as well. I found that my family changed from Perkins to Parkins sometime in the late 1800s. My family was Perkins in census records in the US until 1860, then it showed up as Parkins in later censuses.

Hi, I have been able to trace my family tree back to my great, great, great, great grandfather George Parkins born in 1824.

I have been able to reseach that I think he was married twice to Sarah An Layzell and Susannah Nunn. (although I'm not sure if Nunn is the maiden name or his sisters married name)

The had 10 children that we know of. I believe he had Charlotte - born 1854 - with Sarah and then married Susannah in 1861 and had 9 other children. He grows old with Susannah.

I am trying to find out more information about him. I believe he may have been employed in Hardware, according to the Great Wakering Inhabitants list of 1863, although his name was spelt Perkins.

Census records also spell his name Parkings, but show he lived with Charlotte and Sarah in 1861.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I am descended from Edward Walmsley Parkins of Deptford/Lewisham. He was a corn and coal merchant and married Septimea Savage of Cobham in the 1860's. (I have a good family tree for her). They had two sons, Herbert and Ernest Algernon. I am particularly interested in Ernest's (and probably Herbert's) emigration to and return from Australia (?Tasmania) probably in the later 1880's/early 1890's. They probably joined their uncle James Parkins here.

George Perkins married Agnes Allen in Wayne County, Indiana in 1829. I believe Agnes Allen was a daughter of Hugh Allen who was born in North Carolina. Census records for Agnes Allen Perkins indicate she was born in North Carolina also.
Previously, I have not been able to find any ancestors for either George Perkins or Agnes Allen. Hugh Allen was a land owner in Wayne County, Indiana, in 1830 per land records. A son of Hugh Allen, John Allen, married a Rachel Newby in Wayne County, Indiana, in 1830. Does anyone have an opinion about the correctness of the above?
Ancestry.com has the following entry:
Ohio Marriages, 1803-1900 Record
about LELINA PERKINS
Name: PERKINS, JOHN Jr.
Spouse: PERKINS, LELINA
Marriage Date: 29 Dec 1831
County: Gallia
State: OH

When you consider the handwriting in those days, you will see where the above spelling may have come for Sabina. Note that while the above shows John Perkins (Parkins) JR, the Jr. reference often referred to another man with the same name who could have been an uncle, cousin or not even related, but was used at that time to keep the identities of two men who lived in the same small area separate.

Hi Donna It has been a long time in correspondence. I am still looking for the continuance of John Wesley. I have the same info as you that he left Illinois after Sabinah died in 1882 and went to Iowa where he remarried and there died but I have not been able to trace his demise or buriel nor who he married. If I ever find the answer I'll pass it on to you. Thanks for your answering my Querie.
Jacquie

John and Sabinah were my GGG Grandparents. I have been to Meyers cemetery and have pictures of Sabinah's grave and also of Lucinda's [GG Grandmother] gravesite. Stone is broken and my sis and I had thought of putting up a new one, but, monies are tight. John Wesley moved to Iowa where he re-married, but do not have anymore then that. Do not know who he married, died or is buried.

Can anyone help me with the family of William and Ann Parkins who were living in Polkton Twp., Ottawa Co., Michigan at the time of the 1880 census? He was 56, and she was 35. Their family consisted of Alma J., 16, Frederick, 5, and Minnie, 3. Might there be others born after 1880?

A cousin has a photo which may be of the children of this family plus spouses, and we urgently need some help verifying if this is correct.

Tom Cornell
tvcornel@mindspring.com

Many years ago at a flea market I bought a big photo of a 1903 Second Grade class in Fredonia, NY. The teacher is identified as Miss Vivian Sibley, and on the back of the photo someone--probably the teacher--has identified all of the students row by row. Only about a dozen of the children are very recognizable and one of them is Royce Parkins. While it's available I'm willing to provide photocopies of the photo for a nominal amount to cover cost of photocopying. I would like to sell the original photo to someone who descends from one of the children who are most recognizable.

James W Parkins and his wife Rachel are buried in Weightman Cemetery (row 3) on Lawson Road in Camden Twp, Schuyler Co, IL. This small cemetery is located on the farm of Verne Feltz.
The legal description is recorded in Deed Book 92, page 95, dated March 11, 1911, that Henry Marlow and Sophia Marlow, his wife deeded the cemetery to The Trustees of the Weightman Cemetery.

Parkins, James 2 Jan 1861 (68y4m21d)
Rachel (w of J) 25 Jan 1852 (57y11m7d)

This information was originally copied by Hilma Mermillion and her father, John Feld. Checked again in l991.

On our last visit in May 2005, the many tombstones are not readable, some have been removed, some caskets have broken the ground surface. I do have a picture of the location but unfortunately only the records at the Schuyler Co. Jail House Museum assisted in the location of these graves. Many thanks to Maxine Shelts, a volunteer at the museum.

Therefore: DOB for James W Parkins is Aug 11, 1793 and the DOB for Rachel, his wife is Feb 18, 1795. They were married in Virginia about 1830. I will post the obit for James at another time.

This is my direct line. Hope this is helpful to other Parkins researchers.
Obit for James W Parkins

The following obit appeared in the Rushville Times on January 9th of 1861:

"Parkins, James -- Died on Wednesday the 2nd inst., of diptheria at his residence on Crooked Creek, some 8 miles north-west of Rushville, Mr. James Parkins: aged about 70 years. Mr. Parkins was a native of Virginia and came to this county about 20 years ago. He was an active member of the Methodist Protestant Church. When he first arrived there were no religious services in his neighborhood and of his own accord he appointed and conducted religious meetings. For a long time he was the only person in attendance who prayed in public, and he led the meetings by reading the Bible exhortation and prayer. He is said to have subscribed 1/4 of the amount raised for the building of a house of worship. He was recognized in the community as a man of strict integrity, honest and upright in all his business transactions. His church and community lose one of its finest members. He was taken suddenly on Monday night and died the following Wednesday."

Note: This is as photocopied at the Schuyler Co Jail Museum. Also of note he was married at this time to Mrs. Mary George and his first wife, Rachel, had died 25 Jan 1852. I do not know more about Mrs. Mary George but she married James W Parkins in Dec 1856. They had no offspring of their marriage.
