searching for ancestors of Jonathan Parkinson b 1751, England

looking for ancestors of Jonathan Parkinson, born 1751 or 1755 in Horwich, Lancaster, England. Have seen both dates listed on other trees as possibilities. He died in 1804, same location
He married Betty Roscow (1756-1789) in 1775 in Deane, lancaster, England. they had at least 6 children:
William 1776, Alice 1777, John 1781, Eleanor 1783, Esther 1785 and Jonathan 1788-1788.
He then married Alice/Elizabeth Harrison (1773-) and they had at least 3 children. Jonathan 1792, Jane 1797 and Thomas 1799.

Jonathan's parents are listed as being Michael, born 1717 in Lancaster, England and Katherine Aynsworth born 1715.
The Parkinson line seems to pretty much end there. There is indication that Michael was the bastard son of a Julian, but no indication if that is mother or father's name.

Any clues would be helpful.
Thanks.

Thanks for this. I had all John's children from CLDS 1881 census. John the blacksmith, b.1820, was an apprentice in 1841 - also got this info from jones family tree and rootsweb. So many worked with wood, but some were shoe and boot makers. I have 23 Johns, the earliest b. 1600, lived in Thurnham as a shoe maker, m.1624, son William b.1625. If it would help (or hinder?) I could send a file of all my Parkinsons; some may be duplicated - I don't know. This all started as a bit of fun and interest, but it is giving me a lot of pleasure sending info to people that could help - with the caveat that any info needs to be confirmed, as I have just gleaned it all from the internet and may have made errors and assumptions, especially in the beginning.

I should have said that my Parkinson is Robert, married to Elizabeth, parents of Henry William who emigrated to Australia in 1854. Robert was born in Liverpool and was a cabinet maker (like the rest by the sounds!) and I wonder if he married his brother's wife? That's a hunch from what I can/cannot find.

Cheers,
Mary

I have Robert b.1858, James b. 1862, Thomas b.1863, Nicholas b.1865, Elizabeth b. 1867 and Alice b. 1869.

However I had this John (married Elizabeth), a wheelwright, baptised Pilling 28 Jan 1825, as far as I can see all the children of Robert Parkinson and Mary/Molly Dickinson were baptised at Pilling. I have another John, a blacksmith, baptised Mar 1820 Thurnham. He was the second child of Thomas Parkinson and Elizabeth Hayes.
Again, all of this needs confirming as there are so many of them with the same name in that small geographical area.

Seems I have them all here, though I have two Johns born a year apart, both who married an Elizabeth and both were joiners in Thurnham; but one was born in Pilling according to 71,81 and 01 censuses - do you have names for your John's children in case the Pilling one is a mistake on my part and I have confused the two.

Hello Kris.
As far as I know from Ancestry.com, Richard and Agnes had a daughter, Ann who was a deaf-mute. I have Richard as b.1821, son of Robert, brother of Robert b. 1824, m. 1843 at St Michael's, Cockerham. Brother Robert was a labourer, m. Mary Arkwright 1853, same church, lived at Bank House, Thurnham. I also have John who married Elizabeth as the son of a Robert - no further details. I do have a Robert b.1787. m. Mary Dickinson of Pilling 1812 who were living on Thurnham Moss by 1851 census. I have a son Thomas b. 1811 and another son James b.1814 - taken from Rootsweb - unsure if I have the right parents.

Is the Richard who went to Liverpool the one who married Agnes Clarkson and they had a daughter Ann who was a deaf mute?
I also think John the wheelwright who married Elizabeth Wilkinson was the son of Robert Parkinson and Molly Dickinson, although she is shown as Mary on his baptismal record.
I am descended from another of Robert and Molly's children, Thomas.
I too would like to share information on this family.

Hi. I have John who married Elizabeth W on my database. He was the son of a Robert P, and was a joiner who was married in 1853 at St Michael's church, Cockerham. I also have a Robert who was joiner / wheelwright and an uncle of John and Elizabeth P. I have a Robert b. 1858, son of John the joiner, census 1881, who was also a joiner / wheelwright. I will look at my Parkinsons who worked with wood in some way and get back to you. I have had the same problem as you with many names of people that are identical and born in the same year.

My family is from that area orginially. The first of nailed on date I have for a move from Thurnham to Liverpool is after the 1861 Census. My ancestor Richard, son of John Parkinson and Elizabeth Wilkinson was the youngest son who became a licenced victualler (fancy name for a publican) in Liverpool, working throughout the city centre.

I've been trying to piece together how the various Parkinson lines of the area fit together, but keep getting stymied by various similar names and dates of birth.

I'd love to share information about any of the Parkinsons, we're not such a common surname (~18,300 in the UK and 516th most common)and certainly along my line, we are somewhat of a dying breed.

Re: Lord James Parkinson

Hello, I am Janice Hubbard Dollinger. My great-grandparents were Thomas & Mary McRoberts Parkinson. I would be glad to tell you that from what I know, that my ancestors were originally from England,& I Edward Parkinson was from England but marched into Ireland with William of Orange, during the Battle of the Boyne, which was in 1690. There were 2 other brothers, & two sisters, moved to County Down. I am not sure of the sister's names but Edward had a brother, Hamilton, & Thomas, & they lived in Seaforde, County Down, whereas property was given to Edward, & I wish I knew exactly where it was in Seaforde. I know that Edward's brothers & sisters moved there.

I think that perhaps there are still some Parkinson's in County Down. My great grandparents Thomas & Mary McRoberts family lived in Yale, Michigan. My great-grandfather Thomas came to to Michigan, his brother Both Thomas & James had originally was in the Talbot Settlement and built a Masonic Lodge, in Hyde Park, Ontario, from what I remember, as well as one in NY. I know that there was a son, John who died in Clarkson, NY, I believe, & I think that Robert, is buried there or near there, also. I will have to check with relatives, who may either vouch for that or know different but that is what I remember. I know there were two sisters, also. James being Thomas' brother, as far as him being a Lord from Ireland, I don't know about that. I have always thought that James Parkinson, father of Edward, Hamilton & Thomas back in the 1800's, was Lord James or maybe he was James Parkinson, Lord or somewhere in England.

I guess we can find out more by going some site, with info on Parkinson Family in England. I know they were from Somerset, England, I think but will have to check that out.

Once I can find my info, I will let you know. I had to move a over a year ago, & alot of my genealogy is in storage. I have to get that real soon.

Hope to hear from you.
Janice Hubbard Dollinger

Please let me know more about you know of your line, where they lived or moved to.

Hi Karen,
Thanks for replying. I haven't done any further work on the Parkinson family since my last posts.
The Parkinson family I am interested in were David Parkinson b. 1795 who married Sarah Spencer and their children - Mary b. 1818, Susannah b. 1823 , Hannah b. 1825, James b. 1830 and Spencer b. 1831 - all in the Ovenden area of WRY, so I don't recognise the names you have sent me.
Thanks anyway and goo luck with your research.
Best wishes, Janice

Re: Lord James Parkinson

Lord James Parkinson, was the father of Edward Parkinson, who marched into Ireland, at the Battle of the Boyne, in 1690. He had 3 sons, that I know of: Edward, Hamilton, & Thomas. He had 2 or 3 daughters, also. If he had anymore children I don't know. The Parkinson's were from England, & Lord James Parkinson lived in England, the birthland of the this Parkinson family.

The info that I have is that Lord James Parkinson's children all moved to Ireland, where they had property given to them by England from what I understand, evidently for the service from Edward who fought in the war, under William of Orange. I wish I knew where the property was where the Parkinson's had. I know they were in the Seaforde area, & I know that my ancestor Robert Parkinson was married to a Nancy Mooney, who died, she was Catholic, & Robert took his children to New York/Ontario. James & Thomas Parkinson went to the Talbot Settlement, were the builders of the Masonic Lodges in Hyde Park, & other ones. They came over from County Down, when Nancy died around 1817 or so. Robert Parkinson & his son John passed away, & were buried in Clarkson,NY. I am a descendent, gr,gr,granddaughter of Thomas Parkinson & Mary McRoberts Parkinson, who are buried in Yale, Michigan. Their daughter, Margaret Parkinson Hubbard was my greatgrandmother. She & John Hubbard are buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Detroit, Mi. Margaret's sister, Mary Ann was John Hubbard's first wife, whereas they had 4 children as well, as John & Margaret had 4 children & one deceased infant child.

Hi Jackie, yes Ralph had a son Thomas, one of 11 children.one of thomas's brothers was Ralph who was christened in 1815 feb 19th.who I'm descended from. Got to admit I,ve had my ancestors records shut for a while but when I looked to check these dates I found an email from yourself from Genes reunited,datednov2008, but I've scribbled on it,as I'd concluded we weren't the same bleasdale Parkinson's. I've got a few handwritten notes from searching records in prestons record office, which is where I found Ralph,Thomas and all the kids.I'll drop you a note on your aol account and hope it's stll live, and maybe we can get together to compare notes.

Re: Thomas Kenneth & Ivy Parkinson (Nottingham)

I found in the 1901 census a household in Nottingham where there is a Thomas Parkinson that is 2 years old (Ecclesiastical parish: Bulwell St Mary the Virgin). In 1924 (when he got married) he would be 22 so this is a good match for him. I have found that young people used to get married as soon as they could. In this household the head is called Thomas Parkinson (coal miner) and the wife is Ann Sarah with another child called Mabel and they were living at 7 Honey Place in Nottingham. The wedding certificate of Thomas Kenneth to Ivy Cobb has the couple marrying in Basford, Nottinghamshire in the 4th quarter of 1924, the GRO numbers are: Volume 7b Page 457. I suggest that you spend the £9 to order the certificate from the GRO as it will give you good information and will be worth the money spent. It will give you the fathers' names and occupations, and the bride and groom's occupations and ages. If the father's name of Thomas was Thomas then you confirm the 1901 census household is yours. I also found a birth of an Ivy Kate Cobb born in the fourth quarter of 1901 (she wouldn't be in the 1901 census) in Nottinghamshire, the GRO numbers are Volume: 7b Page: 438. I would also buy this. Another clue that these are your ancestors would be that you have current relatives with these forenames that I have mentioned. This should give you a good start.
Hope this helps.

Paul disappeared from records after being released from Tatura POW camp in Victoria where he was wrongly interned in WW2.He was educated in Qld, NSW and NZ.
