Gideon Parkman Sr. was born in Weymouth MA in 1714, but I can not find his ancestors He moved to (or was incorporated into) Abington, where son Daniel was born; Gideon's son Noah fought in French-Indian War with him; Noah died in war and 50 citizens of Abington petitioned for land as payment for War effort - in 1780s aftter the Revolution, in which both Gideon and Daniel fought, they came to Palmyra with a dozen families to take up grants or buy land.
I have investigated all of Elias (1606)line but found no connection (maybe from Canada?)

Did your find the parents of your Henry Parkman when you were researching Devon records?

I don't just believe my Henry came from Devon, I have the proof of it. He married his wife, Sarah Avery ,there 11/26/1820 and had his children there before bringing his family to PEI in May 1842 in a ship owned by a Mr Yeo. He came with other families from there.
Years ago I was searching in Devon and I found that there weren't any Parkmans anywere else but in and around Barnstaple, Devon back in the 1400's.
The name was sometimes spelled Parkeman then.
Kay in Tennessee

Hello, Serena Parkman is my gg grandmother. My grandmother was Jenny Mae Terrell, married to William Tow. Jenny May Terrell was the daughter of Joseph Calhoun Terrell married to Martha Ann Featherly. Martha's mother was Martha Parkman, father was Edward Featherly.

When I was doing the search, I had not known that Martha Ann Featherly's mother, Martha and Joseph Calhoun's mother, Serena were sisters. Close cousins, I had heard there were some close cousins.

You have more information than I do, but I did want to tell you I heard the same story about Serena's dress catching on fire when she removed a pot from the stove. This information was given to me by my aunt, Irene Tow-Carter, and my mom Joyce Tow-Britton.

Do you know the names of the three children?

Please e-mail me, I would love to hear from you. jeanbritton@hotmail.com
Thanks
Jeannie

It is interesting that you say you believe that your Henry Parkman came from Devon, England. Elias Parkman, a mariner, who came to New England (Massachusetts and Connecticut)ca. 1636 is also said to have come from Devon, England. A Y-DNA test of men with the Parkman name from these two families could help to prove whether or not they are related.
Ardell Parkman Lynds

Parkman and Susan Virginia Terry of Edgefield Co., SC (later of Muscogee Co., GA).

John B. was the son of Serana Parkman and Lydia Huffman of Edgefield Co., SC.

Serana Parkman was, we believe, the son of Henry Parkman, Sr. and Hannah Crenshaw.

Henry Sr. was first mentioned in VA, then moved on to Granville Co., NC and later to Edgefield Co., SC.

Best wishes,

I would love to know more about this 2004 posting. What are the real estate records you sited in your post? Is there something that show he traveled from Rotterdam and is there any information on the name of his father?

If anyone has followed up on this and found more I would really like to know.

If you (Parkman male) or your Parkman brother, cousin, father, uncle, grandfather, etc. were ever interested in discovering how your ancestor links to either, the New England or Southern Parkman families (even the UK) you might want to consider taking advantage of the special DNA test that is being offered by FamilyTreeDNA (until June 29, 2009) to test both your Y-DNA (paternal) and your mtDNA (maternal) at half price.
The Parkman Surname DNA Project at FamilyTreeDNA and WorldFamilies.com needs more participants to help solve the mystery of how all of the Parkman families connect here in the U.S. and eventually to those across the water.
For more information contact Ardell J. Parkman Lynds at lyndsonline AT myfairpoint.net (substitute the AT for @ when sending an email). Also see the above mentioned websites for additional information. To receive the special price you must join through a project at FTDNA.
Regards,
Ardell

Hello. About a year ago I started up a new List, called New England Societies. It is for announcing news and events about historical and genealogical socities and groups, etc. And, I allow announcements of large "family reunions."

We have ~200 researchers on the List. Would you be interested in having your union posted there?

http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/other/Genealogical_...

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

Are any of your people the family tied
> to Parkman, Maine?
> We have always thought it funny that the town of Sanger is very close.
> My oldest sister, Eileen Parkman married a Pete Sanger of Massachusetts.
> My nephew, her son, has always said he wanted to go live there. He may yet.
> Kay
>
I knew this sad truth that there are no Leech/Leach births in the St. Albans records. Both my cousin and I have gone through them. Most of the Leech marriages are relatives. William Leach married Hannah Sewell in York County, New Brunswick in 1827; yet another mystery.

I am transcribing the St. Albans, Maine Vital Records for the Maine Genealogical Society. There is mention of several marriage and marriage intentions of Leech/Leach men and women. I do not see any Leech or Leach birth records. The name Mary Leech/Leach has not shown up in the records I have transcribed so far.
My Parkman ancestor was John, the brother of Gideon.

Thanks for history lesson. A copy of the deed can be viewed on my blog at http://www.aga2428.blogspot.com/. The land was purchased from the estate of Dr. John Warren. The lot contained 75 acres and was sold for $460 dollars. After reviewing the film a bit more, Gideon Parkman purchased at least two other lots. Noah Parkman also purchased a lot from Dr. John Warren's estate. Dr. John C. Warren and Arnold Welles were the executors of Dr. John Warren's estate. Around 1820 or so, John Leech, father of William Leech, moved from Minot, Maine to St. Albans, Somerset, Maine. Several of his children moved to St. Albans as well. In my research of the Leeches, the name of Parkman has not come up before. The sale of the property may give additional clues.

Gideon Parkman was born 11 April 1777 in Abington, MA the son of Daniel & Hannah (House) Parkman and the grandson of Gideon & Mary (Vining) Parkman. Gideon married Martha McClure/McLure.
Before coming to Palmyra, Somerset,ME he lived in what is now Skowhegan, Somerset, Maine. I have checked the Parkman genealogy (1999, Kenneth Lary, Jr.) and I find only one mention of anyone named Leach/Leech. According to the history portion of Palmyra in the "East Somerset County Register, 1911-1912" "Palmyra was originally purchased from the State of Massachusetts by Mr. Barnard of New Hampshire and afterward sold by him to Dr.John Warren of Boston for 12 1/2 cents an acre." Perhaps your Leach ancestor was a land speculator. Did the deed say how much was paid per acre for the land? You might try posting a query on the Somerset Co., Maine Message Board.

My Parkman family came from Devon, England to PEI 1842. My parents brought us down to Mass. and I was brought up there. I have been collecting what I can because my grandfather told me that we connected to the Mass. family.
Gideon Parkman from Palmyra Maine 1820

Gideon Parkman and William R. Leach purchased 75 acres in Palmyra, Somerset, Maine from the estate of Dr. John Warren, brother of General Dr. Joseph Warren from the Rev War, and father of Dr. John C. Warren in 1820. William Leach/Leech is in my direct line and was born in 1800 in Minot, Maine but I do not know what the relationship is to Gideon Parkman.

My guess is that William's brother, Dr. Jeremiah Leech, perhaps knew these famous Boston physicians.

Other names mentioned on the deed are (Gen.) Arnold Welles, executor, Sam'l Paine, Joseph Warren, Henry Warren and JP Bradbury.

I have a copy of the deed and I will share.
Ebenezer Parkman diary for 1720's

Hello, I am hoping a Parkman researcher can help me. I did a google search on my ancestor and it looks like there is a mention of her in Ebenezer Parkman's diary for 1723, but I cannot see the whole citation. It appears Parkman visited Thornton Barrett in Hopkington in 1723 and mentions Barrett's sister Mrs. Greaves. This Sarah Barrett Greaves is my direct ancestor. I am trying to determine if she was living in Hopkington at that time, or just visiting her brother. Could some kind soul send me the exact mention of Mrs. Greaves?

Thanks in advance,

Maureen

Mabel Parkman Breingan - what happened to her

Mabel Parkman was b. c. 1877 Skowhegan, Maine, the d/o Urban K. & Emma Parkman. Mabel (may also have been called Margaret) m. Hugh Breingan in 1896 and had these children: Dorothea, Hugh George, Thomas, Annie/Hannah, Janette and George Haywood Breingan. Sometime around 1922 Mabel left her family and probably Maine. It appears that she was not heard from again. Three of her sisters, her father and at least one son eventually moved to California. What happened to Mabel - did she go to CA? Before the final update of the Gideon Parkman genealogy is completed it would be great to be able to answer this question. Any help appreciated.

Yes, I was referring to Samuel Parkman, who was born Windsor, CT 1644. The NEHGR 55:332 quotes a private record suggesting that he went to Virginia. As far as I know there is no additional information on Samuel (do you have anything?)
Ardell J. P.
