As far as I know, Brissie was the son of John Parrish (1694-1751) and Mary Judith. This John, who had a brother named Humphrey, was the son of John Parrish, who was born in 1644 and Margaret Elizabeth Belt. John (1644) may have been the son of the Edward Parrish who arrived here in 1624. Edward, born about 1600, may have had four younger brothers, Abraham, Richard, Robert and Thomas (possibly the Thomas on the 1624 census). In addition to Edward (1640) and John (1644) there may or may not have been Robert (1632/3), Richard (1648) and William (1652).
Please don’t take any of this as concrete fact. I offer this only as something which may help your research. I have had to change my data many times in the past, sometimes losing numerous generations because I was on the wrong track.
BTW, there were a lot of people with the last name Brissie later on in the Carolinas. They had to come from somewhere. I also know a lovely fable about the origin of the Parrishes.
If you want to compare any notes, you can contact me direct at Formerfarmer@comcast.net.
Good luck.
Ha! I think they did do it on purpose. My name is John Parrish and that's my Dad's name too (so we are part of the problem!). Anyway I can't get back beyond a Brissie Parrish, 1715-1790, from Goochland. He was apparently named after a family friend named Bracey? Brassie? You would think with a name like that it would be easy but I can't figure who's kid he is out of all the Johns, Edwards, and Williams out there.
John

1. John, you cannot possibly be more confused than I.
2.John’s son Humphrey did indeed move to Goochland County from Anne Arundel sometime before the birth of his children. Humphrey’s children were Constance 1730, Humphrey 1732, Ursula 1732, Joel 1736, Moses 1737, David 1738, Aaron 1742 and Booker 1745.
3. The 1600 Edward who sent his son to MD lived and died in Virginia. I also have a census record of a Thomas Parrish (c. 1600) who was an indentured servant in Elizabeth City VA in 1624. I don’t know if Thomas and Edward are related.
4.Somewhere along the line, some of the Goochland Parrishes moved to Louisa County. Or maybe it was early redistricting.
5.The 1672 John stayed in MD as far as I know, dying there in 1727.
6.If I have this correctly, sons were named for their father, their grandfathers, uncles, and cousins. Do you think they did it on purpose to make it more confusing?
Jo
Thanks, that is very interesting. Do you know if John's son, Humphrey is the one that moved to and died in Goochland? There are lots of deeds in the Goochland records in the 1730's and 1740's for John Parrish Sr, John Parrish Jr, Humphrey Sr, Humphrey Jr, James, David, Etc. Do you know if they are connected to the Maryland clan or the Parrishes that appear in Elizabeth City Co., James City Co., Charles City Co., Virginia? Or both? I think I am more confused, ha! Thanks, John

Edward Parrish 1640-1679/80 was the father of John, born in 1672, and Humphrey, born in 1680 in Anne Arundel County. John had a son Humphrey born in 1708. So far I believe Edward was the son of the Edward Parrish who arrived on the Hopewell in 1624 and stayed in Virginia, sending his son to friends in Maryland in 1655. This Edward, circa 1600. may or may not have been the son of Thomas Parrish of Yorkshire. I have no idea where the NC branch fits in.

Hope I didn't confuse you. I am confused enough for everyone.

Jo

Do you know how Edward and Thomas may be connected to Humphrey or John Parrish of Goochland County, VA? There was a Humphrey Parrish who was born in 1680 in Anne Arundel, MD and died in 1743 in Goochland. I have traced as far back as Brissie Parrish, b. 1715 in Goochland or Charles City, VA and died in 1790 in Granville, NC.

Elkanah/Elcaner Parrish of Person Co., NC

My name is Charlie Rathbun, and I descend from James Wilkerson (ca. 1775-1818) who married Sarah Sanford in Granville Co., NC in 1802. James Wilkerson was the son of David Wilkerson Sr. (ca. 1735-1819) and an unknown wife.

David Wilkerson Sr. died in Granville Co., NC leaving a will only naming one daughter, Elizabeth Parrish, and several grandchildren. From deeds, and estate settlements, I've been able to find most of his 10 children.

However, I have just recently uncovered an add from an old North Carolina newspaper (The Star) from Genealogybank.com that gives the names of all 10 of his children as well as spouses for the married daughters.

Here it is:

"State of North Carolina
Granville County

Superior Court of Law, March Term AD 1820

David J. Young ex'r of David Wilkerson Sen'r dec'd vs. David Wilkerson, Heirs of Wm Wilkerson, Lewis Wilkerson, Heirs of George Wilkerson, John Wilkerson, Heirs of James Wilkerson, Jesse Ragan and wife Mary, Kader Parish (probably a misspelling of Elkanah/Elcaner Parrish) and wife ____ (we know from David Wilkerson Sr's 1819 will that this is Elizabeth), John Eastwood and wife Salley, and Susannah Wilkerson. Petition to emacipate negroe slave, Daniel.

It appearing to the satisfaction to this court that the heirs of William Wilkerson, George Wilkerson, and John Wilkerson are not inhabitants of this state; ordered that publication be made in the Star for four weeks, that unless the defendants, non residents as aforesaid, come forward before the judge of our said court, to be held for the county aforesaid, at the court house in Oxford on the first Monday of September next. and file their answer thereto, the petition will be taken pro coufesso and hoarde exparte

Witness, William M. Sneed, Clerk of said Court Office 1st day of March A. D. 1820

William M. Sneed"

So...the 10 Children of David Wilkerson Sr. were:
1. John Y. Wilkerson Sr. (bef 1765-1826) married Unknown and had 8 children.

2. David Wilkerson Jr. (bef 1765-1825) married Sarah Pettypool Jones (was a widow and had married previously to Edmund Jones) daughter of John Pettypool and Sarah Sanford

3. Mary Wilkerson (1761-1764- after 1820)..married Rev. War Vet Jesse Ragan and moved to that part of Caswell County that later became Person County, NC

4. Susannah Wilkerson (bef 1765-after 1820) not married in 1820 and probably one of the two over 45 females in David Wilkerson Sr's 1810 household

5. William Wilkerson (ca. 1766-1817) married Martha "Patsey" Pettypool (ca. 1755-1836) daughter of John Pettypool and Sarah Sanford

6. Sarah "Salley" Wilkerson (ca. 1770-???) married John Eastwood in 1791 in Granville Co., NC. She may have died as John Eastwood's wife at the time of his death in 1836 was a Mary Eastwood.

7. Lewis Wilkerson (ca. 1772-1847) married Jane Harris, daughter of John Harris Sr. and a sister to his brother George's wife, Henrietta Harris. He owned considerable property in both Granville and Person Counties, NC.

8. George Wilkerson (ca.1773-1804) married Henrietta Harris, daughter of John Harris Sr. and a sister to his brother Lewis's wife, Jane Harris.

9. James Wilkerson (ca. 1775-1818) married Sarah Sanford, daughter of Robert Sanford and Ann Jones, in 1802 in Granville Co., NC. This is my line of Wilkersons.

10. Elizabeth Wilkerson (ca1777-???) married Elkanah/Elcaner Parrish and removed to Dickson Co., TN. after 1820.

As shown above, brothers Lewis and George Wilkerson married Harris sisters....Jane and Henrietta Harris respectively...daughters of John Harris Sr. Well....Abel Parrish also married a daughter of John Harris Sr.....Mary Harris. So this not only makes the Wilkersons "In Laws" to the Parrish Family by their marriage of Elkanah Parrish to Elizabeth Wilkerson, but Lewis Wilkerson was also an "In Law" to Abel Parrish through the Harris Family.

Overton Parrish of Person Co., NC also married a cousin of theirs....Sarah "Sally" Wilkerson...in Person County. Sally Wilkerson was the daughter of John W. Wilkerson (1759-1845) and Sarah Unknown. John W. Wilkerson was the son of John Wilkerson (1730-1806) who was a brother of David Wilkerson SR.

I'd be very interested in corresponding with someone on this family.

Charlie Rathbun
Jasper, GA

Obed or Peter Parrish 1790 census

Seeking parents and siblings, even far removed cousins, of Obed PARRISH, 1768-1815, or his wife Elizabeth, b. abt 1768. Obed appears on the 1790 census in the Halifax District of Northampton County. In 1800 he is a constable in Newberry County SC and in 1810 he is in Iredell County NC. He died in 1815 leaving a widow and eight children. The only other PARRISH in his district in 1790 is Peter PARRISH. His son, Braxton, said that he was considered well off financially when they moved to SC, but he was ruined by friends for whom he posted surety and was forced to sell out in SC and move back to NC.After his death, the two eldest sons, Braxton and Thomas, worked to support their mother and siblings. They earned enough money to set the mother up on a small farm. Braxton first, and then Thomas when he came of age, migrated to IL and settled in Franklin and Jackson Counties.Obed could not have just appeared with property in the 1790's. We just cannot attach him to another PARRISH family. He seems to have some connection to Tabitha PARRISH WALDROP of Newberry SC, but I do not know its nature. Early Lincoln County history mentions an Obid Parish who was a joiner or craftsman who made church furniture.Any suggestions?
I believe my family Tree is open to you on ancestry.com,if you search Parrish Family Tree. John Louis Parrish is also my grandfather. I do have his ancestry back to a Thomas Parrish (1580). If you cannot get into my Tree, let me know and I will try to help fill in the blanks. We must be cousins. How is your dad? My dad is John Aubrey Parrish, his father John Louis Parrish. I am Aubrey Ted Parrish. Let me hear from you. Ted

My grandfather, William Happel Parrish, and John Louis Parrish were brothers! Currently, we have only traced the family tree to from there to Nelson Albert, Jr, Nelson Albert, and to Isham Parrish (1742). Can anyone direct us from there?

Do you have much on the VanHowten family? I'm very interested in William's father, Willis P, and that line. I believe the family surname was actually Vanhouten, and I descend from that line. Would love to hear from anyone with info on this family!

Wow! Great, this helps a lot thanks. Funny though, it also brings up new questions! Some things match up to family lore such as dates & birthplace for Ervin and all of Amanda's (Hooten)info, however we were told that his name was Robert Ervin Parrish and that he was a cherokee indian or half cherokee at least. I have found nothing that confirms this at all.

My grandmother was Margaret Parrish McGuire, from Istachatta. She passed away in the early 30's (1934 ?) She left behind about seven children. Catherine McGuire Waller, Mary McGuire Slate, Anna Mae McGuire Newsome, Ada "Mildred" McGuire Giddens, Thomas, Joseph, john McGuire. John was killed in WWII his body never recovered, John and Joe were twins. My mother Mildred was the youngest just a few years old when their mother died, my aunt Catherine raised her. I recently learned Mrs. Whitehurst was my grandmothers mother and she was an American Indian. ( we always heard we had Indian blood lol) if you have additional info please share. I don't know much about the Parrish side of the family. Though it appears my mother was named after one of her aunts.

John Winston Parrish was my grandfather. His son James Willis Parrish was my uncle but I never met him as he died before I was born in 1963. He was married to Betty Droste Parrish. They had two sons, James Parrish and Michael Parrish. I know James doesn't have a middle name but I'm not sure about Michael. James Willis was very young when he died. I'm not sure when that was or what his exact age was at that time. It was definitely before 1963. When John Winston left Virginia he settled in Bakerstown, Pennsylvania. He had 7 children Anna Mae Parrish Trim, Maurice Parrish, Doris Parrish Hunkele, Ernest Parrish, Stanley Clifford Parrish, James Willis Parrish and Rose Parrish Piendl, They are all deceased.

James Parrish born in Canada in 1903

I'm looking for information on James W. (Willard??) Parrish who was born in Canada according to the Florida State Census 1867-1945. He died on 30 March 1973 in Volusia FL. He was married twice I believe. Once to Earnestine UNKNOWN and then to Grace Ella Johns. Earnestine was my mother's mother. Rossie Elizabeth (Parrish) Crenshaw was my mother. I'm trying to build up her side of the family tree but I am at James and Earnestine. Can't find much on them or who their parents were.
