Hi Chris,

I have been researching my mother's Pascoe line for a number of years now, and have amassed quite a lot of information. I've studied the line of Richard Pascoe born 1763 Sithney, to William and Ann Pascoe, and who married 1). Hannah Rutter, and 2). Elizabeth Vine. Also back to the earliest Parish records in Sithney, and before that to Breage, 1500's, and forward all lines from Richard. Also have been working my way down other branches of the early Sithney records. Of course, still collecting information and filling things out. I have also been thinking of writing a book on this line, as much to quell missconceptions, as to put all this research into a place that can be referenced by others. At present I'm in the midst of trying to contact descendants, and collecting pictorial material.

Chris, have you been working on this family line, and what info. do you have? There are a few common mistakes that crop up in a number of online trees that are repetitive errors of an early English genealogist. I am concerned that they are not repeated.

It looks like you have set yourself a huge task, as Pascoe/Pasco/Pasko/Pascow/Paskow etc was a pretty common name in Cornwall, and then of course very many set forth across the english speaking world and established many more Pascoe families.

Kind regards,

Rowena
In Melbourne
Hi Tracey,

Interesting reading the info.

I am the granddaughter of Alex Pascoe (your grandmothers brother) and remember my mum, Ena Pascoe, talking about her Aunty Hilda. My mum, of course was a Darcy Road girl, which from all the stories I was told over the years, would have been a great close knit group of friends. I was also told a lot about the Giles family and until my parents passed away they would still speak to their Giles cousins. My cousins in Port still keep in contact with the Giles's.

I would love to have more information about the Pascoe family.

Thanks and look forward to hearing from you.

Ann

Andrea

I don't think I have anything as interesting as these two in my family tree - always hoping for something.

I can see Richard as a Convict in 1881 and 1891 - 5 years for the first offence and 10 for the second - better than his father who was sentenced to be transported, mind you his patient did die.

Is that Richard, described again as a Carpenter, living with a son, William H Pascoe, a Miner, at Newquay?

Have you tried posting something on the Cornish List to see if there are any descendants about. My only interest in the Pascoes is that my great grandfather's sister's child married a Pascoe. My 3rd cousin John Henry Pascoe set up and managed the Pascoe-List.

Regards

Brian

Brian, a little bit of follow up to your response on the above.
In checking William's descendants I noticed his son Richard missing from a couple of censuses, and did a little more investigation.
It would appear possible that both father and son were abortionists, as a Richard Pascoewas indicated (at least twice) for "feloniously using means/instrument to procure moscarriage". I also found what appears to be the same Richard Pascoe (right age and place of birth and right occupation) in Parkhurst Prison on one census and Chatham Prison on another. "My" Richard is missing from his family on both these censuses, although appears on a later census.
Interesting family!

Regards
Andrea W Wildes
Brian, thank you very much for that full explanation. I had found one part of the inquest reporting his aquittal for manslaughter - the first two newspaper reports were missing, so I did not have all the information.

I found the report of the Assize verdict of transportation and several newspaper reports on the matter, but nothing further, so will try the websites you have suggested.

Again, thank you for the information and the suggestions.

Regards
Andrea

If you search the IGI on FamilySearch.org you will find William was born on 10 May 1801 at Saint Just In Roseland, Cornwall to William & Thomasine Pascoe - Batch No.: C021891. By the way I think Thomasine is Thomasine Hamlyn, which accounts for William's middle name.

William married Emma Yeoman at Kenwyn on 16 Feb 1826 - they had three children: Richard b.c.1830; Mary b.c.1833; and William b.c.1836 (the child in the 1841 census living with his grandmother)

I failed to find William Hamlyn Pascoe in 1841 Census but you will find son, Richard Pascoe, aged 10, described as "Son of Dr. Pascoe" and living with his grandmother Thomasine aged 70, of Independant Means, and a William Pascoe aged 5, also a Female Servant, at Church Town, Cubert. HO107/149/10/10/14

I suggest you search the Archives of the Cornish-Gen List where you find a posting mentioning the death of William Hambly Pascoe, aged 66, Sep Q 1868 registered at St Columb. You will find full newspaper accounts of not only the 1852 trial when he was sentenced to 10 years transportation for attempting to procure a miscarriage, but a trial in April 1851 where he was found "Not Guilty" of the manslaughter of Hezekiah Bunt. http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/CORNISH/2010-0... - also at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wbritonad/...

There is also an interesting letter at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wbritonad/... and a further one at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wbritonad/... and another at http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/th/read/CORNISH-GEN/2010-10...

Here is something from Hansard - http://hansard.millbanksystems.com/commons/1852/jun/18/crimi...

I should imagine that he must have subsequently been acquitted or at least had the sentence commuted.

Regards

Brian Comley

William Hamlyn Pascoe was a surgeon in Cornwall. I cannot locate him (or his wife and family) on the 1841 although I have him on later censuses.

In 1852 he was sentenced to 10 years transportation for attempting to procure a miscarriage. However, I cannot find any evidence that he was in fact transported. He appears on the 1861 census with his married son's family.

If any lister has any further information re William H Pascoe, particularly whether he was transported, and if not, why not, I would be grateful to hear.

Regards
Andrea
It's difficult because so many people have the same name, even siblings! I have a great grand uncle named William Luke Pascoe, born in 1850 in Kenwyn, Cornwall, England. Perhaps the same person you're searching for? His father was Luke Pascoe, born 1815 in Tregony, Cornwall, and his mother was Caroline Richards Nicholas, born 1821 in Kenwyn, Cornwall.

Maybe not the same people, or maybe I've gotten confused in my own searching and these don't belong in my tree. Just giving you the option to think about it.

Hi, My Grandmother is Noreen Pascoe, who is Charles Emanuel Everland Pascoe's daughter, she tells me that Samuel and Jane owned a Brewery in Hamilton, New Zealand, which was subsequently brought by the Innes Family - although i have yet to find any records to support this transaction, the Innes family did own Brewerys in Hamilton. Charles married Rose Eileen McPike - whose mother ran a maternity home in Onehunga, Auckland, but unfortunatly died in childbirth along with her 7th child Lucy when my grandmother was only 5 or 6. I dont have any pictures of Samuel or Jane but i do of Charles and i will post them on my tree. I hope this has been helpful - Hazel

Hello Tracy,

I think I can help you with your Michael Pascoe. He was the son of Edward Pascoe, b. 13 April 1789 in Wendron, d. 24 Nov 1851 in Polgear, Wendron.(His parents being Edward Pascoe and Catherine Knuckey) His mother was Mary Ann Andrew, b. about 1790 in Wendron and died 14 Nov. 1842 in Polgear, Wendron. The children were: Nicholas b. 2 May 1813; Edward b. 5 May 1815 and d. 30 Mar 1834 in Polgear; Mary Ann b. 26 May 1817; John b. 30 May 1817 (m. Grace Bawden 22 May 1841 in Wendron); Grace b. 16 Feb 1821; Elizabeth b. 24 Jan 1824; William b. 23 Oct 1825; Jenifer b. 3 July 1828;(all in Wendron), Catherine b. 20 Mar 1831 in Calvadnack, Wendron d. 6 May 1833 in Polgear and Michael b. 18 Jul 1833 in Polgear, Wendron.

In the 1841 Census only Edward, Mary Ann, John, Elizabeth, William and Michael were shown as living in Polgear. I don't know where the others might have been.

Although this family is not directly related to my Pascoes from Constantine and Wendron, I still like to try and link the families.

I hope this is of interest.

Best wishes
Diane

Hello

I have just stumbled over your post. I am interested in the Giles family history. My mother was Grace, one of the 12 children of George and Hilda. Grace gave birth to me in 1948. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks
Helen

Dear Karen

Apologies for the delay in my reply, life has been a little hectic!! Thanks for the information, a bit more meat on the bones for my friend, greatly appreciated.

I wish that I could help her find a living relative as she has none other than her immediate family. She herself was born at St Agnes, a home for unmarried mothers who were taken there and gave birth, Rosemundy Hotel now I believe. She longs to find out her father's name but I have very little hope on that as it was not given on the birth certificiate!!!

Best wishes

Linda

Dear Linda,

Try http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org

There I found a 31 January 1859 marriage at Truro St Mary's for Richard Mitchell PASCOE with father James who married Sarah GIPSON with father James. At http://freebmd.rootsweb.com that is in Truro registration district March quarter volume 5c page 275. Hopefully these are Ruby's grandparents.

Also a Richard Michell PASCOE christened in Kenwyn 28 April 1837. His residence was Castle Street and his father was James, a retail brewer and mother Priscilla.

Also, found a 02 December 1830 marriage in Feock for James PASCOE of Truro and Priscilla MITCHELL.

These seem like good leads.

Cornish censuses are transcribed at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cocp.html and you could see if these suggestions make sense for your friend's family.

Enjoy,
Karen descended from PASCOs from Camborne, Cornwall

I should add there is the possiblity that William Paascoe was born in 1800, as when the Devon census was taken in 1871 he is listed as 50 years old. Does anyone see him in the Falmouth census or records?

I am trying to help a family friend who has no living relatives that she knows of, I have traced back on her mother's side which were Pascoes from Truro, many of which were farm bailiffs. Her mother was Ruby Pascoe born 1910 in Truro, her father James Mitchell Pasco 1861, his father Richard Mitchell Pascoe 1832. The middle name of Mitchell has been found in 3 generations. Any leads would be great.
I only have 1 picture of them and that is when they first settled in Coalinga, CA from Grass Valley. I believe that was in the late 1800's. This is so much fun meeting new family and learning new information.
We are also of the line of John Hugh Pascoe & Elizabeth Furze -> Hugh (1762-1846) marr 1786 to Elizabeth Bonds, but we have their son John (1799-1891) married 12.12.1822 to Mary Ann Dennis in Kenwyn - Truro(Marr. in church by Banns). Witnesses William Dennis & Maria Pascoe. We don't have any Ferdinands. John's siblings were Harriet(1786-90), Hugh, William, Mary, Harriet, James(d.aged 1), and George who married Mary Thomas.
The children of Hugh & Eliz.Bonds are all listed as Pasco in the birth/bapt register, Truro St.Mary.
John & Mary Ann (Maryanne) had 12 children, (the family legend was that they "had a large family - 20 or 21 - not all survived")- well, 12 is more than enough! The youngest Hugh b.1850 Truro, marr. Harriet Jane Chegwidden & they emigrated to NZ on the "Chile" 1872. He was one of Brogden's navvies. Don't know if this connects with what you have. Pauline(NZ).

Thanks Laura. There seem to be a few Ferdinands about around this time, but I can't find a link between them. My GG grandfather Ferdinand was born in 1835 but I can't tie in Elizabeth Pascoe 1801 to the tree....it sounds too co-incidental though for there not to be a link...

Neil
