I am about 10 years too late, but if you receive this, I am back on the Patching trail. John Patching of Texas was uncle to my grandfather. james Creasy Patching, who was killed in the tornado was his brother. His father was James of Brasted, Kent, UK and his mother was Ann Alwen of Croydon. I would love to hear from you--from anyone who has researched this line. One of the two married Philip Meadows; the other married Joseph Patchin/Pacheing/Pacheury.
Even the noted genealogist, Donald Lines Jacobus, confused which Elizabeth married which man. Is here any definitive documentation which proves which man married which Elizabeth?
Hi Tony,

Great to hear from you. I would be thrilled to receive any photos that you might be able to get. By coincidence my Father-in-law is visiting with us in Vancouver right now. It is through his Mother that the connection is made to the Chates and Patchings. Keep in touch if you come across any family information. With thanks.

Hello again Patricia.

The gravestones were Patchings, but the christian names on the inscriptions do not come to mind. However I will be going down that way to Portslade sometime in the next few months, so I will visit the churchyard again and take some photos for you.

I'm still developing my tree along the line of Charles Chate 1769-1821, but have no further information for you at present. Certainly I will pass anything on if it's going to be useful to you.

Wait to hear from me again.

Best wishes

Tony

Thank you so much for your reply to the message which I posted almost 3 years ago! It was a lovely surprise. Thank you also for the information. On my last trip to England I was unable to get to Brighton, but now knowing that there are actual gravestones still in existence I will be sure to make the trip. Do you remember if they were Patching gravestones? Or, were they Chate gravestones? Or both? Do you know of anyone who might live in the area and be willing to take photos of the gravestones and email them to me? I live in Vancouver, Canada so don't get over to the UK very often!
I know very little about the Chates. I do know that
Jane Chate (Williams) lost her husband. Owen, when her children were quite young. She ended up moving in with family/sisters. I do not know when she actually died. although she was still alive on the 1891 Census. Do you know any more of her? Or, have any family photos of the Chates? Her son Richard Owen Williams was a silversmith and died in 1926 her daughter Anna married a Walter Grafton of Blackheath, Kent. I believe that this family was involved in the zipper industry??? The other daughter Ellen never married.
Any information greatly appreciated. But thanks again for the story and information. I really enjoyed receiving it.

With regards.
I have picked on this thread because Charles Chate was one of my ancestors. My mother was a Chate. Mary Ann Patching 1798 and Charles Chate 1800 are listed in my tree together with their children, Owen Williams and the children he had with his wife Jane Chate.

I can give you a couple of small pieces of information.

The Patchings, of course, were a sizeable Sussex family and one of them was my teacher in 1946-1947. We knew her as Miss Patching, so I do not know her first name. The school was St Nicolas C of E Junior school in Locks Hill Portslade. I know for a fact that she had taught there for a long time and was grey-haired when she taught me. I have many memories of her, but one was that on every child's birthday she gave them one of the old 12-sided brass threepenny pieces.

Every Wednesday we went in crocodile procession to St Nicolas Church for the weekly school service and it is still quite vivid in my mind that one day she showed us the gravestones of some of her relatives in the churchyard. About a year ago, when visiting the area, I looked in and saw that they were still there and in fine condition. They may be of slate which may account for their unweathered state. I cannot remember any of the details, but you will find them on the left against the flintstone wall as you climb the path towards the church.

So I hope this may be helpful.

Best Wishes.

I am sorry I have not picked up this query sooner. Hopefully "better late than never". Frederick, the son of George & Lucy married Christina HELMERS 1884 in Tumut, NSW Australia.
Lucy YOUNG was the daug. of Thomas YOUNG and Sarah DAVEY. she was born 18.05.1839 at 47Judwick St Brighton, Sussex, England. Her siblings were Anne, Thomas, Emma, Sarah, Charles, Alfred and Louisa. If this is your line I shall be able to give you more information.
Once again I apologise for missing you posting
Claudia

My apologies....my great-grandmother Ada Patching married Frederick William King of Hayling Island. I'm getting my grandparents mixed up....Patrick O'Brien married Winnifred Burke.
I know Ada had a brother named William Henry who married a lady named Pat and they had a daughter, Ivy. My Dad remembers going to William's funeral in the mid 1950s. Ada and Frederick had 5 children....Elsie Adelaide, William Frederick, Annie Rosina, Ivy Lillian and Frances Maud. I believe they may have lived around Bexley Heath and Ada was born in Shoreham, Brighton. Any information you have would be appreciated.

Mary Anne Patching and Charles Chate of Brighton, Sussex

I am looking for anyone who might be connected to these Chate's or the Patchings. Mary Ann Patching (born 1798, Brighton, Sussex) was, I think, daughter of John Patching and Martha Baldey. She had a sister Martha (1793) and a sister Elizabeth (1799). I think that Mary Ann's father was a John Patching and her mother was a Martha Baldey. Not sure of birth dates or birth places.
Mary Ann Patching married Charles Chate (born 1800) in 1828 in Brighton and they had the following children:Sarah Ann, John,Caroline, Jane, Eliza, and Charles. My husband descends from Jane Chate who married an Owen Williams. Jane and Owen had a daughter Ellen (1859), Anna (1860) and Richard (1862).
I am planning a trip to Brighton and wonder if anyone might have any suggestions of villages, churches, cemetaries to visit with connections. With thanks.

Jane, I am afraid that we are not the same line. Fredrick E Patching went to Sitka where he managed and wrote the definitive book for managing Salmon Fish Hatcheries. He married first a Miss Erhart and then a lady from California. He had one child, Ted, who moved back to California and died near San Francisco. Ted had one son, a physiciam, who refuses any contacts with those of us who are trying to build a Patching tree. I, at one time, had a copy of a photograph of four Patching brothers in Alaska and Canada, but they were not of our line. I have a cousin who made some Alaska studies and will email you her name and address, but cannot post it. Sorry, but let me know if you run across any Texas Patchings. SB

Unfortunately, my computer died along with all email addresses and Family Tree addresses. I have someone coming who can, ho9pefully, pull them up. Thanks.
My grandfather, John Alwen Patching, was the nephew of John Patching and the son of James Patching, all of Surrey and Kent. He emigrated around 1884, I think, along with another brother-possible two (Fredrick Norris Patching and James Ernest Patching) They went to West Texas and split up. Jim stayed in Texas, Fred went to California and then to Alaska. He has family in the San Francisco area. Jack returned to England via Arkansas where he met and married my grandmother and never completed his trip home. SBrandon

Married William George Davies in Portsmouth.

I have some information but can not find her birth listed or family information.
Actually, the Anglo-Saxon suffix "-ynge" refers to "the family of..."; thus the original spelling of the name was likely, "Paeccynge" (pronounced "Patching"). The Doomsday Book identifies the family with an Anglo-Saxon tribal chief named "Paecce" (pronounced "Patch").

Mary, THank you for your reply on John Alwen. The brother who was killed in Claude was Jim. I have a copy of the letter that Mary Ivery sent to her daughter that details all of the information. I, actually, have more than I need on everyone except my Grandfather who was the oldest. Please get back in touch with me. I have not been active for about a year, but am back into my genealogy. I have some records that go back to 1760's. We can share privately or via message board. I have three other "cousins" who are interested. My Alaska connection is now back in California-3rd generation down, but is very unresponsive. I have more in my files and will get them out.
John Alwen Patching-March 1866
Fredrick Norris Patching-1868
James-
Earnest

Let me hear-Sissi Brandon

I am researching my grandfather John Alwen Patching of Surrey England. His family came from Brasted, Kent and Withington(sp?), Kent, UK. His father was James Patching of Brasted. John emigrated about 1884 with (?) two brothers, James and Ted. They met an uncle in Bowie, TX and then split up. Ted went to Californiz ang then to Alaska where he was involved in Salmon Fisherys. Jim stayed in West Texas and was killed by a tornado around 1890. John (Jack) settled in Texarkana, AR where he married my grandmother Dugan Lasley in 1892. I have a large amount of family history prior to 1870 and after 1892--but almost nothing between 1884 and 1892. I would love to find out their ship's name, where John lived around 1890, etc. Please contact me with any information and I will share what I have. SB
