Hi Alison,

I have seen a birth recorded on the Hugh Wallis site for a James Patience born 10th January 1867, in Avoch son of Alexander Patience and Helen Cowie. Unfortunately none of these folks are on my tree.

Good luck in your search,
Marlyn.

Jane Patience/Simpson - Manitoba. Post 1920

Hi All

I am looking for Jane PATIENCE born c1890 Avoch, Rosshire to James and Georgeina also from Avoca. James was a fisherman born c 1867.

Jane married 1912 in Essex to John Albert SIMPSON. They had 2 children Georgina born c1913 & Albert born c1915. Unknown at this time where.

Jane & John and her parents all emigrated to Manitoba in 1920. John alone was deported in 1922 and died a year later. I am trying to discover what happened to Jane and the children. I can only assume they styed in Canada with her family as I've not found any record of their coming back to England.

Her parents died in British Columbia c1970's.

Many thanks

Alison Sanguy

If you have a look around the old churchyard in Avoch, you can see gravestones with Patience, Jacks (Jacques) and McLeman (Mac Leman). So surely French names and not Spanish. I used to wonder if they were Huguenot names, but can't find any evidence of it. Maybe more of a Grand Alliance connection?

Years ago, there was a small folk museum in Avoch. It contained a black and white picture of the village football team from years ago - George Patience, Hugh Patience, Donald Patience, John Patience, etc etc. When I signed the visitor book and they saw I was a Patience they were quite pleased and said, "Oh, yes, you have the dark eyes and hair like the Patiences."

I find it hard to believe that it is just a name taken from a virtue or personal characteristic - if this were so, why are there so many concentrated in the north of Scotland?

Elizabeth Patience

One thing that always bemused me about the Patience name is that people keep saying that it is a misprononcement of the French for fisher.
The fact that in France there are still people with the patience surname surely must point to this as being wrong, or are we to believe that the French can not speak their own language?
Also why is it that only the patience name seems to have this convoluted way to Scotland but all the other names from France Murray, Jack, St Clair is accepted as coming almost direct from France? The patience name appears in Scotland around tha same time as Jack Lemman and tha others so why did this come here be all these weird ways?
My gr gr grandparents were Lewis Jack b 1803 and Janet McLeman I am more interested in them, but as Patience comes up in my Tree, I thought perhaps some-one may be able to help find out where we all fit as a family. Unfortunately, it seems the reverse as everyone is as confused as me. It appears that Donald Jack marr Uk and had a son Alexander ( Souny ) Jack who marr Janet UK and had 7 children, the youngest being Lewis b October 1803 and died May 1866 in Tradeston. This Lewis is, hopefully, my Lewis who marr Janet Mc Leman and had 8 children, one of whom was Janet ( Jessie ) who migrated to Aust and became my gr grandmother, she had 6 children all with the second name of Jack, even the daughter Val

I don't know if this helps but from a few sparce details I have from census information I have a John Patient born around 1823 in the Chipping Ongar area of Essex in England, whose father was George Paience/Patient. George was born around 1803 in Shelley (also in Essex)and married to a mary Skingley in 1825. George was the son of John Patience who was baptised in Willingale Doe 23rd Dece 1775 and married to Fanny Poole on 21st Dec 1794. This John Patience was the son of Philip Patience who was baptised 29th jan 1748 at Leading Roding and married to Ann (Surname unknown). Philip was the son of John Patient who was buried in White Roding 16th June 1761 and married to Ann Reynolds who he married in 12th Feb 1733 in Roxwell.

This is a branch of the family that must at some point join up with my own but as yet I can not find a connection.
John Patient.

The name Patient is only a variation. The first of the line used the surname Passion or Pashion and this gradually changed to patience and Patient. It all rather depended on the priest or vicar of each church and the sound he heard from the person. In the beginning there was no such thing as spelling, well not until Dr. Johnason.

I've gotten to the stage that I don't think I want to be connected to any of these families, its too hard'
I had been told that Janet McLeman was the dau of Alexander McLeman and Janet Reid, but now find she is the dau of William McLeman and I can't find any mother nor when her father was married or born. The closest I can come up with is William or Willock McLeman marr Margaret McLeman and they had 6 children, the last being Janet b c1805. Just to confuse things a bit more Margaret McLeman was dau of Donald McLeman. I have nothing at all on William's family so I don't know if he is brother to John
If I have the right William, he was born 1756 and that would be too early for your John's brother wouldn't it.
If you could give me your postal address, I will send you Lewis and Janet's family and also Jessie's Val
coraiyo@australiaonline.net.au

I am descended directly from William McLeman and Margaret Leitch. Their son, John born 1775 is my 4 x great grandfather, who married Janet Patience around 1797. I gather then that you are descended from William, John's brother.

I would also be interested in a descendancy file on Lewis Jack and Janet McLeman.

With all the McLemans, Jacks and Patiences in my tree it has been somewhat difficult to sort them all out.

SMarshall - Canada

Margaret and William were my great..gt.gt.gt.gt.gt grandparents. Margaret's parents were Donald Patience and Margaret Ross, and Donald's parents were William McLeman (Cloussy) and Margaret Leitch.
They have many descendants walking the streets of Avoch today.
Some of their descendants are in more distant parts, Holland, Japan, and Australia (where one struck it rich on the New S.
Hi Marlyn Sorry to take so long getting back to you but I've been up to my ears in Jacks and can't always work out who belongs to whom. My 3x gr grandparents were Lewis Jack and Janet McLeman marr 1826. Lewis is supposed to be the son of David Jack and Ann Patience but I've also been told his parents are Alexander and Jannet Jack and that Janet McLeman was supposed to be dau of Alexander McLeman and Janet Reid, now been told they are William and no mother recorded. So you can see why the confusion Val

Origin of the family known as Patience

This is from my family history book.

The following paragraphs were copy written from the book "the Charm of Scotland" written by T.H McCullough. It tells us many stories about the family, Patience.

The Black isle village of Avoch (pronounced Och)is the oldest community in Scotland, as well as being on the most attractive. It is less than nine miles from Inverness, the Capital of the Highlands, yet it has no Highland characteristics or traditions. No Gaelic is spoken in the village and nobody has any interest in the language. There is not a piper in the place, and the sound of the Pibroch has no power to thrill. The Kilt and the tartan might as well be proscribed, for they are never worn.

These peculiarities spring from the fact that most of the natives of Avoch bear the names of Patience, Mcleman and Jack, which have no ethnological connection with the Highlands, or Scotland for that matter. The population of the Parish is around 1200, and of that number, there are about 600, Patience’s, 200 Mcleman's and almost as many Jacks. Where there ancestors came from or why they settled in that pretty little port of the Black isle is a mystery, but throughout many generations they have maintained, and even strengthened there racial characteristics.

Mr Robert Reid, who was one of the very few villagers, who didn’t ear the name of one the three dominant families, led me up through the gracious works of Roshaugh to the old church of Scotland, and the burned out mansion in which Sir Alexander MacKenzie the famous explorer of Canada’s North West Territories, spent the last years of his life. In the vestibule of the Kirk, I examined a subscription for the Waterloo Fund, dated October 1815. It bore the names of the most prominent parishioners, and Mr. Reid drew my attention to the fact that there was not as big a proportion of Patience’s as one can find in the Parish today. The reason was the curious one that Patience breed many more sons than daughters.

Another curious feature of that subscription list was the nicknames by which so many of the Patience’s, McLean’s and Jacks were known. They followed the family name, for identification purposes, and I noticed those of ‘Booky’, ‘Cranky’, ‘Muckley’, ‘Bykie’,
‘Havana’, ‘Blakie’, ‘Ban’, and ‘Hunter’. Even more curious was the fact that most of these old nicknames were still in use. There was perhaps, more need of them for the local bank had 100 accounts in the name of Patience, and they were numbered for Identification purposes.

Where did the original Patience’s, Mcleman’s, and Jacks, come from? One theory is that came from Cornwall to fight for the tittles searover and land-grabber many centuries ago. Another theory is that they are decedents of fisherman from the Basque Provinces of Spain. They certainly came into Gaelic Community, for in 1328, the village was a Barony of Auach, the Gaelic spelling of which was abhach. In Gaelic the ‘H’ silences the letter which proceeds it, so Abhach becomes Och.

The following pages contain the direct decedents of Donald & Catherine Patience and their children as were known at the time of printing. There have been seven generations and three hundred and seventy-two descendents.
I have a MI booklet from the Old Churchyard in Avoch.

The following inscription might be of interest to you:

"to the memory of Lewis Jack, skipper Avoch departed this life 25th Nov. 1791 aged 67 yrs, and Margaret Jack his spouse died l2th March 1804 aged 71 yrs; also the memory of their son David Jack, fisherman residing in Avoch who departed this life ...d...18..aged....; also to the memory of his spouse Ann Patience who departed this life ...day...18..aged."

Unfortunately I guess they were unable to read the last writing on the tablet. smarshall

PS You are correct, with all the intermarrying it is impossible to be accurate.

My connection is David or Lewis Jack marr Ann Patience 1797.
They were my 3x gr grandparents. I've found out the Patince, Jack, McLeman and Reid family intermarried over a few generations making it very hard for us to work out who is who. Val

I am a descendant of John McLeman born 1775 - my 4 x great grandfather, who married a "Janet" Patience in 1797, although I do not have an actual marriage certificate to verify this. They had 8 children. William born 1778 was John's brother and I don't have info as to whom he married or when. Where did you get the info that John McLeman had married an "Ann" Patience? Looking forward to hearing from you regarding this. Regards smarshall

I'm still confused. Emma Watson is John Patients daughter, who married Christopher Watsons brother James. What's really strange is I found John living with daughter Emma in Macon Co. IL in 1910. Says he's a widower.
The only Minnie Patient I can find is in Stonington, Christian Co. Il in 1910. Says she is married, but theres no husband. Also says she is 58 which would put her birth in 1852. Also she's been married for 38 years which would be 1872. John son George with first wife wasn't born till 1874. Things are not getting clearer.

It is a bit confusing. I also saw the census with her name listed as Minnie W. I assumed she was then known as Minnie Watson Patient. On the marriage license her name is listed as Minnie Elizabeth Watson of the town of Dry Point, Shelby County, Illinois. Her ages is listed as "about 30". John Patient is listed as 53 yo and of the town of Holland, Shelby County, Illinois. Marriage date is 8th of October 1877.

Her death certificate lists the name as Minnie E Patients born 12th July 1839 in Newton, Indiana, death October 7, 1923. Her father is listed as Walter Watson, mother unknown. The informants of the death are Bert Patient (my grandfather Albert) and Chas. Patients.

On John Patients death certificate his birth is listed as 2nd March 1824 in England. His father is listed as George Patient, born in England. There is no mothers name listed, just the birthplace of England. Mrs. Emma Watson was the informant of his death on Dec 26, 1916.

I have tried to locate the names of the other children of John and Minnie but have had little luck. My grandfather, Albert Allen Patient was born in Stonington, Illinois on Sept 26, 1887 and died June 3, 1934. The informant for his death was Chris Patient of Decatur Illinois. On Albert's death certificate the birthplace of his mother, Minnie Watson Patient, is listed as Kentucky. As of yet, I have found no birth certificate for Albert.

I'm a little confused. Elizabeth Watson that was married to John Patient was born in 1853 in Ky. Also according to 1880 census her middle initial is W. I don't think she is related to Christopher Watson. Christopher and his father were born in OH and grandfather in PA. Elizabeths father eas born in Scotland and mother in VA. I don't have any kids for John and Elizabeth. There probably were some, but not by 1880. By the next censu in 1900 kids were grown and gone.

Patient family

My great-grandfather was named John Patient. He was born in 1824 in England. According to his death certificate his father's name was George, also born in England. Aside from the info on the death cert. the only other thing I have is that he married his second wife in Illinois in 1877.

Does anyone know if Patient is an alternate spelling for Patience, or is it two different family names?

Thanks for the connection to the US Patiences. Frank A Patience arrived at Pittston in Oct 1904 and was shown as living with his wife Sarah at 73 Main St. He left behind a wife Harriet in the UK who died in 1941. He is next shown living in Moultrie County, Illinois. I would be interested to know if he had any children.
