I would highly doubt he was a minister. He kept getting warned out of town, which was something people in town, but not from it got when they had no visible means of support so the town wouldn't have to support them. Ministers, while usually not rolling in dough, didn't generally fall into that category. Also, LDS records list whatever anybody sends in without vetting it for veracity.

William Wyman is also listed as Reverend in LDS records but I have never found any source for this but it might help explain him taking in a woman with child. I also am not sure the parents/grandparents for William Wyman listed on Wyman.org.

I have not been able to find out definitively which John Patten in the Vermont/New Hampshire/Massachusetts area was the biological father of Benoni Patten. Lord knows I've tried. There are a bunch of them to choose from. One researcher on this line thinks it was a John Patten who lived in Londonderry, NH and somehow met Margaret and impregnated her there. We assume when she found herself with child she moved to Bedford, NH to live with her parents who had moved there some time previous to 1754. Matthew Patten (no relation) was a Justice of the Peace in Bedford. On 5 Apr 1757 (or over four months after Benoni was born) he recorded in his diary, "was at James Walkers on John Pattens being apprehended by Margret Holms for his Getting her with child for which he agreed with her for 300 [pounds] old Tenor and he pd Charges". Did John Patten live in Bedford? In favor of that argument is the fact that Matthew Patten does not say, "John Patten of such and such a place." Against that argument are the facts that Matthew doesn't mention any other John Patten in his diary except for his own son who was but a child when all this happened. And he mentions practically everybody in town. Also against the argument is it took Margaret four months after the birth of Benoni to find John Patten and have him arrested and dragged to Bedford for this trial.

As for William Wyman, Benoni was over two years old when Wyman and Holmes married. Some undocumented histories say Wyman was from Salem, MA (about 50 miles away from Bedford). We don't know how or where they met or where they were married. William Wyman is not mentioned in Matthew Patten's Diary.

Wyman and Holmes were living in Northfield, MA in 1765, according to one history (Lloyd and Mary E. Wyman, "Ancestry of Lloyd and Mary E (Tisdel) Wyman", (typewritten manuscript, Painesville Ohio, 1920). Maybe they met and married there. Margaret's parents stayed in Bedford at least until 1777, which is the last year William Wyman is mentioned in Matthew Patten's Diary.

Not sure if we have the same tree: Patten, West Chinnock, Somerset and London, England. Looking for connections to Thomas Arthur Patten married Mary Chant births abt 1818. I am unable to get past this year. He, from London; she, West Chinnock. I had an interesting visit in the late 1970s perusing all church records. I believe I found 5 Patten families back to the 1600s. Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks, Carolyn cbrynepatten@sympatico.ca

William's parents were: William and Jane Kohler. William's parents were: James and Unknown. This was obtained thru Ancestry.com and can be taken with a some skepticism.

So Alice and John were sister and brother, right? That would make us cousins the same distance from Alice and John's father. Small world-< smile. My line goes from William Patten to Alice Patten Ralph to Gertrude Ralph Marr to Helen Marr Pierre to my mother Adele Pierre Hinton.

The family has always lived in the Chicagoland area and surburbs except for a brief stint in South Dakota in the 1870's ish. There is a picture of Gertrude and Alice on my page here if you haven't already seen it. Do you have any of John or William? I was fascinated to see brothers of one family marrying sisters or another. Maybe the times encouraged those connections.

If I remember correctly the family was in the Hennipen IL area. A funny connection turned out that my daughter spent two summer internships in Hennipen long before we found family origins from the Hennipen area.
I haven't worked on this since last fall so a bit of this has faded and I find I'll have to review connections again.

It's nice to know family is out there
Leslie

I can't recall which relative connected us to the larger tree because we made the discovery at least six months ago.

I'd be happy to answer any questions I can.
Helen F Patten Dwight, IL 1884-1953

I have been beating my head against a wall for 6 months now looking for any information on Helen F Patten. I was wondering if anyone had any information on how she came to Illinois? Here is the information that I do have:
Born in New York 1884 or 1885 - I have sent away to the state of NY requesting records and received a letter saying that there wern't any records.
She was adopted by the Patten family in or around 1900 (Wiley Owen & Lydia Patten) in the Dwight/Ransom area. She later married their son William Norris Patten and had 3 children (Thurlow, Irwin & Edna). She died in 1953 in Dwight, IL. Thank you in advance for any information or help. She is the reason for starting this family tree.
I've been looking for a couple days now... Tho nothing more has turned up... I'm looking for a Harry B Patten. I can find him on a 1920 being a boarder and a 1930 Census having a family in Beverly MA, I know the family forward... but can not find out his father... i know this Patten line came from Candia NH, but there were quite a few of them in Candia. I've run out of family members to ask this info of... so i'm turning to see if any on this board knows of the information i seek...

Shirley

As promised, please find attached the photos I have of William and Rosina and some of their family. I have attached George as I think he is your brother? If so, do you know who Carol is? I have heard from the Molder side of the family and though they say that he was married before he married their mother, I don't know if her name was Carol.

The photos were my Grandmother Doris' and the writing is my transcription of what she wrote on the back. They are a bit small, so if you would like me to blow them up I will, but I can't attach certain types of file here so again, if you send me your email address I can send them, or I will print and post them to you.

Enjoy!

Regards

Andrea

We had a huge computer failure in 2010 and I'm not sure if I got your emails or you got mine, if you are still interested, I would be happy to pass on my information and receive anything you have. My tree and information are mostly in excel so if it would be easier I would be happy to print a copy and post it to you.

Many thanks and all the best for 2012!

Andrea

Hi Shirley

Happy New Year!

Rosina and William were my great grand parents, my grandmother Doris was their second youngest child. Where is your connection? There are Pattens in the US and Germany so I would love to see how you fit in! How are you with an excel spreadsheet? All my tree information is in excel, but if you're not comfortable with that I'd be happy to post you a copy, the tree is pretty big now, and all the notes on people are in there too. I have some photos which I can dig out, scan in and send you.

If you would like to, please let me know your email address and I will send them direct, I can't attach excel from this site! I will try and get the photos done today and send them on to you.

My mother (Doris' daughter), remembers a family rumour that Rosina married a few times after William died (allegedly old men for money!), but I have no idea how true that is, family rumours are terribly un-reliable in my experience! Though there is an unidentified man in a photo I have of her...! This would explain her death being hard to find if she had re-married. She had a daughter in the US so she may even have gone there?

Let me know how you would like the information, and I will get to work on the photos,

Regards

Andrea

I also see another sister Roxa S. Patten born about 1805. But have not had much success there as well. Any info?

FWIW, here is the obituary for Levi Curtis Patten written by his son-in-law:

FATTEN.—Died at the home of his daughter, Mrs.
A. P. Van Horn, in Charlotte, Mich,, Oct. 11, 1898, of
paralysis, Levi Curtis Patten, aged 79 years, 11 months,
and 11 days. His death was very sudden. The even-
ing before, he was seemingly as well as ever, very cheer-
ful in mind, joining with a clear voice in prayer with
the family at their evening worship ; but in the morning
was found dead in his bed. From all appearances he
died without a struggle. He was born in Augusta,
Oneida Co., New York, Oct. 30, 1813, and when a
young man settled with his parents in Clay, Onondaga
county, where he married, and lived on a farm till 1869,
when he moved to Michigan, and settled near Olivet,
Eaton county. He embraced the views of the Seventh-
day Adveutists, and joined the church in 1862. He
was a member of the Charlotte church at the time of
his death. One son, four daughters, and seventeen
grandchildren are left to mourn, but not without hope.
Funeral services were conducted by Elder A. T. Jones,
at the house, Friday, Oct. 13, and he was buried in
Bosworth Cemetery, near Olivet, Mich.

I. D, VAN HORN.

Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, Vol. 71 - No. 03, Jan 16, 1894

Likewise the obituary for wive Adelia written by daughter Adelia:

ON the 21st of October, 1870, in the town of Walton,
Eaton Co., Mich., my beloved mother, Adelia Patten,
wife of L. C. Patten, closed her eyes in death, after an
illness of ten days, in the 55th year of her age. Her dis-
ease was bilious fever, with congestion and inflammation
of the brain.

For nearly thirty-three years, she had shared life's bur-
dens with the companion of her youth, in the care of a
family of six children, five of whom live to mourn, with
him, her loss. Our hearts were grief-stricken in an unex-
pected hour; yet this very bitter cup is sweetened by the
assurance that she rests in hope of a part in the first resurrection. We are very thankful that mother lived to see
her children all grown up beyond the helpless years of
childhood. But her smile, which ever gave joy to our
hearts, will cheer us no more—her chair is vacant, and
her gentle voice is hushed.

Her oft-repeated prayers, for her entire family, still lin-
ger in our ears, and especially the anxiety of soul she felt for the son who makes no profession of the love of Christ.
May the Lord comfort father's heart, and sanctify this se-
vere affliction to the good of the family. For seven years
she had been a believer in the third angel's message, and
an observer of the Lord's Sabbath.

Eld. John Matteson made some excellent and very
comforting remarks on the funeral occasion, from our Sav-
.our's words in John 11:25, 26.

ADELIA P. VAN HORN.

Review and Herald for 1870, Vol. 36 - No. 23, Nov 22, 1870
