The following is a transcription of the fifth of several letters between Thomas Patterson and his future bride Martha Lathim. These letters were recently donated to the Grainger County Archives in Rutledge, Tennessee:

[To] Miss M Lathim.
Present.

[Delivered] By the hand}
of}
our friend}

East Room, Sunday 23 February,

Miss M Lathim,

Your communication of the 20th Inst. is before me, which gave me great pleasure after reading the contents.

I have thought proper, on the account of my studies, not to trouble you with a third address untill today.

You may think in all probability, (and I concede you have good reason) that my addresses to you in company are cool and uncurtious. My reasons for so doing are few and simple. My addresses to ladies, are not numerous at any time, and my real disposition is somewhat averse to boldness with ladies, and further more, I have not thought it prudent at so earley a period in our acquaintance to give publicity to my prefference for your society. But by your permission I will at convenient times manifest such prefferences for your company as good sence and sircumstances will suggest. To make an honest declaration to you, I must say, that it will be with extreme difficulty that I can approach you, verbally on the subject upon which our communications have touched. Such though is my disposition, and it is beond my controll to change that, that nature has decreed. I hope you will not accuse me at any time with cold indifference.

I am equally concious with yourself, that the subject called love is one of extreme delicacy, and should be approached by its voteries with the utmost causion. When the heart is honest and steadfast in purpose there is no danger, unless some fiend of an enimy should strike a pang of poison into the vitals of an honest affection, and forever wither, blight and destroy such future promised happiness and bliss.

I can say for myself, that the attachments I have formed for you have not been of a days or a weeks standing, but for months. Neither is it a phantom of the brain, nor is it the result of a misguided judgement. But it is the affections of an honest heart, a decided prefference for one whos charmes have overpowered whatever indisposition I may have had for female society. I have pondered well the subject I have anelized my feelings, and I can make them out nothing other than love. Forgive me for so openly avowing what I know to be the truth.

Should this meet your feelings abruptly, be charitable towards me, and attribute it alone to honest intentions, however imprudently and injudiciously expressed. I can say that I am prompted alone by honest intentions, and should I succeed in gaining your well wishes, and eventually your kind affections, I should then feel that I had won for myself a happiness and blessing that no other object or being could so completely bestow. When I could hear from you, that I was asteemed, as I asteem you, that word would speak volumes to me. It would be to my hopes, like the mariners needle to abillow tossed seaman, pointing to harbours of wrest and enjoyment.

Did I once know that so fair a one would condecend to confide in me for protection and security, I would consider my life an unworthy sacrafice for them. For fear I shall be tedious I will conclude by,--}
}
}
}
Ever Remaining
Yours Truely
Thomas Patterson
The following is a transcription of the fourth of several letters between Thomas Patterson and his future bride Martha Lathim. These letters were recently donated to the Grainger County Archives in Rutledge, Tennessee:

[To] Mr. Thomas Patterson
At W. H. Nortons
In the west rom

In the care of
Mrs. Norton

Mr. Patterson,

Your communication of yesterday reached me promptly, which has undergone a careful perual and as it is your request I will answer it so far as I consider I am interigaled(?) it was not my intention to "puzel" or even evade but I desired to take prudence and consideration for my guide. I do not doubt for a moment the sincerity of your declarations and expressions. So fore as I have had any opportunity to form an opinion in relation to you it has been of a very favourable nature. And to say the least of it I have no disposition to hate or even dislike you to be candid and frank I must confess my feelings have been to the contrary. The subject called love is one of no small magnitude to those who are the reciprocants of its blessings and misfortunes. I earnestly say that it is a real satisfaction for an unprotected female to know she has a protector upon whose masculine power she may depend for protection and defence. But how frequently it is the case that disapointment blasts every fond hope and expectation and leaves our sex to be the disapointed victims. In view of those considerations, how careful should we ever be in communicating our real feelings to any one. I can say I have every confidence in you as a gentleman of honor and sound moral character when that is the opinion I have you can readily conjecture how I will conduct myself towards you in the future.

Respectfully Yours,
Martha Lathim
The following is a transcription of the third of several letters between Thomas Patterson and his future bride Martha Lathim. These letters were recently donated to the Grainger County Archives in Rutledge, Tennessee:

[To] Miss M. Lathim
Preasant,
White House

Passed	}
by	}
Mrs. Norton}

Madison Academy
February 19.

Miss M. Lathim,

Yours of yesterday was duly received and examined. And I must confess that I was somewhat puzeled to solove the contents. But after some deliberation I have concluded to venture a second address. I would not have you, if I knew my own heart, to give credence to any declaration I have made or may yet make, if my general department does not accord with what I profess. I consider no one can be a gentleman, who is void of morral honesty. A portion of which I profess to be a possessor.

After this short expostulation, I hope I may safely preceed. You will find me at no time, acting the part of the coquet. And my pen shall ever speak the language of my heart. When I tell you that an affection is treasured up in that heart, for one who is not far absent, believe me, it is true when I tell you that it not one of fancies fond dreams, believ me, I speak the truth. Yet how foolish it is to love and no be loved, and should this be my unfortunate lot, pity me, and do not hate me. For if I should be hated by one, after I was unconciously enamered by their charms, I would feel worse than miserable, yes I would be wretched. I will not dwell too long on the dark side of the picture. I will take for my motto, hope on and hope ever. Peradventure some consoling word may chance reach my ear.

May I hear from you. Yours respectfully,

Thomas Patterson
I am looking for information on the parents of Lula Patterson and her brother, Isaac Patterson. Lula was born about 1876 in Kenton, Gibson Cty., TN. and died November 7, 1935 and is buried in the Union Grove Cemetery there. She was married to Alfred Flowers. Her brother, Isaac, was born March 7, 1880 in TN. and died in 1930 in Missouri. Isaac was married several times but was married to Daisy (maiden name unknown) at the time of his death. Lula Patterson-Flowers' death certificate gives their parents' names as Billy and Emily Patterson. This information was furnished by Mrs. Flowers' daughter, Mrs. Ralph Turner.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

The following is a transcription of the second of several letters between Thomas Patterson and his future bride Martha Lathim. These letters were recently donated to the Grainger County Archives in Rutledge, Tennessee:

[To] Mr. Thomas Patterson
At W H Norton’s
Rutledge, Tennessee

[delivered] By P C Norton	}

At my room Thurs 18 Feb

Mr. Patterson,

Your very unexpected communication of this morning came to hand which I have carefully perused and find no direct request for a response but a request for an expression on my part is couched in the last clause. The very small present that I entrusted in the hands of my friend “-----“ with permission that she might dispose of it as she thought best has from the tenor of your communication fallen into your hands to which I cannot say I seriously object. But to apply the matter in its strict meaning it should have fallen into the hands of a friend, or to say the least of it, it should have fallen into the hands of an acquaintance, and then with some force the expression “Forget me not” would have applied in every sense of the term. With you until recently I have not had the pleasure of a formal introduction and therefore could not have regarded you as either a friend or an acquaintance. Since circumstances have terminated as they have, and that also I have no good reason to bring in question the expression embraced in your favor this morning I am led to deal more plainly with you than I should have otherwise done. To be held ever in memory with any one is a pleasing reflection to me but much more so when I am held in memory by one in whom I can have confidence ever confiding in their expressions made to me from the short period of our slight or immature acquaintance. I am not guaranteed(?) in saying that I have or have not that confidence above alluded to in your expression. Should I be led to place that estimate upon you then you may be well assured that I will not be forgetful. I trust after this expression and explination you will excuse me from further light upon the subject at present. But I will in conclusion say that I know nothing to prevent me from esteeming you as a friend.

Yours in Confidence
Martha Lathim
The following is a transcription of the first of several letters between Thomas Patterson and his future bride Martha Lathim. These letters were recently donated to the Grainger County Archives in Rutledge, Tennessee:

[To] Miss M. Lathim.
At W. H. Nortons.
Rutledge, Tennessee

[delivered] By the hand	}
of }
Mrs. Norton	}

Madison Academy
Feb. 17th. 1851.

Miss M Lathim,

Your preasant in the form of a “Book mark” was duly received, for which I tender to you my thanks, and remark, that the preasant is properly appreciated. It is not unfrequently the case that the preasant is asteemed on the account of its intrinsic value, but in this case that application cannot alltogether be made, but let me assure you in all due frankness, that I asteem it not only on the account of its utility to me, but on the account of whom the preasant proceeded from. The inscription “Forget Me Not” shall be written indelably upon the tablets of my heart. And wherever my lot may be cast, or however lonely or destine my situation may prove to be, or even should fortune smile and place me where my heart would desire, The words, “Forget Me Not,” will ever sound in my ear, and sink deep upon my feelings. Let me say to you kind doner, I will not forget you, no never. Though I may not be atall remembered by you, I will forget the not. Let me ask you, in conclusion, to give my name a place in your mind, and furthermore let me say “Forget Me Not.”

With Respect Yours,
Thomas Patterson
Bessie Mildred Draper - Patterson

I am stuck, literally stuck on this one. Bessie Mildred Draper is listed on the 1900 and 1910 Census as Patterson, then later goes back to Draper and then remarries a few more times. She had 2 or 3 kids. In Particular, my 4th great grand-dad, Worth B Draper. But on some things it's Patterson and some it's Draper.

I'm utterly confused. So if anyone has any information, please contact me.

Thank you,
Kristie Draper
draperkd13@gmail.com

McGaughy/McGaughey, James Wayne (son of James C & Mary) in TX & Okla, Dodd

First, I will state that our line of McGaughys did not use the "e" in the surname. Our line of McGaughys is as follows: William, George Washington, Samuel Wayne, James C, Henry "H.P." Patterson, Lois Leland, to my husband.

MAIN QUESTION: Does anyone know anything about a James Wayne McGaughy who m. Annie K Dodd ? Perhaps m. 25 Feb 1900 in Attala Co, Miss. Online I saw mentioned that he was b. 15 Sep 1873 Jackson, Hinds Co, Miss & d. 3 Aug 1907 in Guthrie, Logan Co, Ok. Perhaps they had a son named either Wayne or Wade maybe b. 10 Jan 1901 d. 1977. Wd like info on the son as well as mom & dad (James W & Annie). Appears son's name was transcribed wrong (Mayne--instead perhaps shd be Wayne)on a 1910 census where he appears with his mother (father, I guess, had died in Okla in 1907) in the household with his grandparents (James C & Mary Patterson McGaughy) in Whitewright, Grayson Co, TX. Mary, the grandmother, is the daug of Duncan Taylor Patterson. Perhaps James Wayne & Annie had another son (John Patterson McGaughy) who was born & died same year of 1907. If so, appears dad & son died the same year. I have no month & day for the death of the baby. A whole other story: two McGaughy/McGaughey brothers married Patterson sisters. James C married Mary Elizabeth Patterson and Henry Clayborne McGaughey married Lou Patterson. I can share that info, if anyone would like.
I have photos of tombstone in Oak Hill Cem outside Whitewright, TX, of J.C. & Mary McGaughy. Online list says in same cemetery is a J.W. McGaughy (1873-1907) & says plot owned by H. McGaughy whom I think is probably our Henry "H.P." Patterson McGaughy, who was a banker in Gilmer, Upshur Co, TX--my husband's grandfather. We cannot locate the grave of J.W. (James Wayne)at Oak Hill Cem but have been told to go to the Whitewright City Hall. Hope to do that soon.
My husband's family did not know of a brother of H.P., but unless I have connected the dots incorrectly, there were 3 children of James C & Mary McGaughy:
1) James Wayne (1873-1907)
2) Emma Katherine "Aunt Kate" (1876-1969) who m. Henry Minor Hill (I am in contact with members of this family)
3) Henry "H.P." Patterson (1878-1968). (Have all kinds of info on this direct line)
I have seen online (can't recall where or from whom) that James Wayne McGaughy was a doctor. Too bad I am not so good at recording sources, but sometimes googling online trees does not tell a lot about the preparer of the tree. Hard to find anything on James Wayne McG in Okla because of when it became a state & the poor records that were kept.
I have lotz of dates plus photos, obits, & stories on these families (except know nothing about James Wayne McG & his family). Hope someone can fill me in. Will be glad to share what I know.
Thanks Jo

Joseph William Patterson

Can anyone help trace Joseph William Patterson born 1886. He married Stella Pyle 26/07/1913 and had 3 children, Olive, Emma and Joseph, all named Patterson and lived in the village of Greenside Ryton Co Durham. His son Joseph was born after Olive and Emma in 1920 and then Stella had a son Edward in 1925 who was given her maiden name Pyle. When Stella died she was still called Stella Patterson so they didn't divorce. What happened to Joseph as apart from a possible inclusion in the Death Index in 1968 he isn't mentioned again?

Hi!
Have you gone to the Fold3 site, Dawes Reports? These are actual interviews with Native American applicants pursuing claims to land awarded to the Five Civilized Tribes in Indian Territory (OK). Wonderful reference.

My Patterson is James Monroe (ggrandfather, GA, FL, AL, MS, TX and OK) who married Sarah Gayden then a Maggie Gayden, (MS) and then Mary M. Wells (TX). His father, William (GA) married Nancy Knowles/Noles,(GA) who is thought to be 1/2 Seminole. I am not sure of a Thomas but interestingly, James Madison's sister, Katherine Patterson, married Henry Latham in MS. There just may be a connection!

Thanks!

Hello,

Does anyone have any pictures of or letters from Baxter Davis Patterson and his family that they would be willing to share? I am looking especially for information on or pictures of my maternal great grandmother, Mabel Minnie Patterson, who married Lafe Benbow.

Mabel was the daughter of Baxter Davis Patterson and Julia Penolia (Pemalia) Funderburk. Mabel was born in 1891 in Moultrie Co Illinois and died in 1924 in Clarke Co Iowa of pneumonia. After she died her husband's new wife threw out most if not all of her belongings and so I am hoping to be able to find some copies of pictures or letters from Mabel or her family as a gift for my mother.

Thanks for your time,
Heather Groves

To be specific, I was told his mother Thulda Busby was "put upon" when she was very young. This caused someone to call Napoleon Bonaparte Patterson a "woods colt". When I asked my grandfather, Ogee Neil Hastings, who lived with his grandfather (Napoleon) for a while about the story, he was not too happy I knew about it. My grandfather told me when a girl was "put upon" or assaulted in those days, the family gave the man a chance to marry the girl. If the man refused to marry then the family would kill the man. I don't know if someone was killed, but she married later a neighbor of hers by the name of Henry Patterson. If you look in the Louisiana census for Thulda Busby (father Nathan Busby) in Union Parrish, you will see Martin Mims listed. You will also see the Pattersons living nearby. I have never put this story in writing before. I hope my grandfather would be ok with it.

Anyone have any info on John Patterson b. about 1814 in Allegheny(?), Pennsylvania, one of 7 children according to some accounts. Looking for siblings or parents. He migrated on the Oregon Trail in 1845 and married Sarah Ann (Stout)Pickering in 1853. He died in Silverton, Or. on 14 July 1869. Have lots of info about him after migation but only his approximate birth year from before migration. Thanks for any help.
An alternate DOB is 4 June 1804, but his wife preceded him in death and his offspring were young and possibly the source of this birthdate. All census info and land office records taken while he was living reflect approx 1814 as his birth year.

You may want to check out the William Patterson listed in the 1850 census in Franklin Twp., Fayette Co., PA as this William had a brother Sydney and nephew Sydney as well as a son James age 8 in the census above. The Pattersons of Fayette Co. were connected to my family with Jeremiah Brown Patterson marrying my grandfathers sister before they moved to Illinois and Kansas. It appears people of Fayette Co. often moved to Washington Co. as did some from Westmoreland Co. Good luck in your search.

 Wd love to know where the Pattersons came from because my son is getting married in Sept & going to Ireland on honeymoon. Wish I could "home in" on an Ireland connection.
It is now April 7, 2012, & I am just now seeing your post
(a couple of moves, a computer crashed, change of email address, my Ancestry subscription expired, etc.)for which I am extremely disappointed. This may not get through to you.We now live near the area where graves are located (a cemetery outside of Whitewright, TX) of James C McGaughy (this line spelled with no "e")& Mary Patterson. Have taken pics that I will be glad to share.
Mary Elizabeth (her dad called her "Mollie" in a letter I have a copy of) b. 8 Jul 1845 AL d. 13 Jun 1928 Quanah,Hardeman Co, TX. Jim had died in 1920 so Mary/Mollie went to live with my husband's Aunt Kate & Uncle Henry Hill in Quanah. Aunt Kate being Emma Katherine/Kate McGaughy (sister of Henry Patterson "H.P." McGaughy, my husband's grandf). I have recently been in contact with the Hill family. Rec'd pics & info from them.
Are you connected in any way to the families mentioned?
I have been in touch recently with Carroll McGaughey in Tyler, TX, & I think in the past I had seen postings you have had with him. He said that he has lost touch with you, I believe.
Hope you & I can make contact.
Jo M. jomeredith8@gmail.com
