Hi Nikki. I wonder if you ever had an answer?

I had an uncle, Charles Thomas Paulette (born about 1922), who was in Texas for a time, and later on the East coast. He died some years ago.

That Charles Thomas Paulette had a son, Thomas Charles Paulette, born about 1947, who was in Texas most of his life, however, I really don't believe he was a US Marshall. He has died, but had a difficult life and may have been inclined to embellish his life. I don't know that it is a match, nor that my cousin Tom Charles had 'embellished', but just want to offer a possibility.

I hope that, after these 12 years since your post, that you have found your connection. Please contact me if needed.

Yes Thomas was Holcombe & Nancy Harvey Paulette's son. Thomas Blasingame Paulette and migrated to Columbus MS in 1840 he and his brother John split at about Kentucky from their brother William and sister Nancy who continued onto Andrews County Missouri. John married but had no issue, Thomas married Lucinda Harper and had issue. His property which he called 'Paulette' was eventually inherited by his grandson Thomas Spencer McHenry who renamed it 'Ridgeway'. The property was eventually sold in the early 20th century and is now a hunting retreat called Circle M Plantation. Thomas died in 1859 and his estate recorded 40 slaves. I know more about Thomas' descendants but not particularly a great deal about him other than he was ambitious and he and John's contact with Virginia ceased around the time of their brother Jesse's death in 1851.

Jabrico,
More info: Paulette, Mississippi, is a wide spot in the road in Noxubee county, Mississippi, the next county south from Lowndes county, where Columbus is located. Rootsweb shows a Thomas Blasingim Paulette (b 1816, Virginia, died 1859, Noxubee County, MS of "intemperance.") Likely, this Thomas or his family or descendants were the namesake for Paulette, Mississippi, and perhaps for your ancestor. This Thomas was definitely linked to the Virginia Pauletts. The name Blasingame (spelled various ways) goes through several generations.
See http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

Jabrico,
As bassettsterling suggests, several Pauletts emigrated from Virginia to Georgia, and, I believe, some of their descendants may have gone to Mississippi. Check the Paulett/Paulette genealogy forums and Rootsweb.com's family trees to see if there were any in the Columbus, MS, area.
Bassettsterling,
I assume your ancester Holcomb(e) Paulett(e)was from Charlotte/Campbell county, Virginia. I am related through the Harvey line and perhaps the Paulett line. Would be interested in corrsponding with you and comparing notes.
Dan Cambridge
dacambridge@kc.rr.com

Thank you for responding to my entry. I do have a bit more info. I talked to my great grandfather who is still alive named Willie Paulette. He just had his 80 birthday. He doesn't remember much, but he said that his father's full name was John Thomas Paulette son of a preacher named John Henry Paulette out of Columbus, MS. He said that 3 times great grandfather John Henry may have come form a small town or something named Paulette, but he is not so sure. He didn't know if they were slaves or not, but at least it gives me a little bit more to work with. Again thanks for your input.

I am curious in your post. Do you have information that might direct you to the place your Thomas Paulette was born? As for the name itself its un-doubted by some of the older Paulette descendants I have talked to that the Paulette family descends from the Paulet family of England who split in that country into two branches one coming from the Marquess of Winchester the other from Sir Amyas Paulet. The name is actually Paulet but is odd in that its spelling has been legally changed by many descendants to reflect the pronunciation rather than spelling. For instance, it was in my 4th great grandfathers generation (Holcombe Paulette) that he and his siblings began to add the extra te to the name reflecting something more like the French feminine name of Paulette. This was probably a result of simply how Virginians spoke at the time, and they looking to ensure its sound. One branch of the English family legally petitioned the College of Heralds to alter the name to the 17th century spelling 'Pawlet' and while spelled differently from the other English Paulets they are still acknowledged as coming from the same family. Of that generation of Holcombe Paulette's time many of his and his kinsman's children whether in Virginia or Georgia migrated elsewhere, for instance two of my uncles from Holcombe went to Mississippi and one uncle and aunt went to Missouri spreading the name, I know at least three descendants of one of the Mississippi uncles who ended up in Switzerland, several from the Missouri branch in California and I coming from the Virginian live in Scotland.
I suppose the questions you should ask and information you should look for from the living members of your family , and what information you can initially find is where did Thomas Paulette come from originally, who were some people associated with him such as neighbors, what was his profession, and also what was his race, I assume since you have already indicated your race as 'Black' that is his as well but that doesn't mean it actually was. If he was it would also probably be good to look for white Paulettes in the counties he lived in and determine if there is a connection. It is possible considering your age that he would have been born in the 1850's enabling you to connect him or his parents if he was either born free or born post 1865 to a family of Paulette that could have been associated to him as a slave owner, you may also just find that he himself or someone before him simply came across the name and took it as they thought it was nice, this is not uncommon, in New York for instances in the 1890's there was a massive number of Rockefellers and Vanderbilts most of him 10 or 20 years earlier started out life with a name like Rabinowitz or something and chose those names to blend into their new country. So you actually have three avenues to explore, 1st am descendant from a white Paulet who would have been a slave owner or overseer of English ancestry, 2nd do I descend from a former slave who took the surname of their owner or a more prominent member of the county in which they were owned, 3rd do I descend from someone who simply changed their surname to one they thought suited them better and now can not be explained?

I am a Black american age 26 and I have always wondered how my family got it's name. The furthest back I've been able to research unfortunately is my great, great grandfather whose name was either John Thomas Paulette or just Thomas Paulette. His son Willie Paulette out of a small town called Madison, IL, fathered my grandmother Cassandra Paulette who is my mother's, Jacqueline Paulette's, mother. A lot of unwed babies born resulted in me inheriting the name of my mother's great grandfather, but it's not my fault and I am still proud of my name. I thought it interesting in your blog the mention of a Thomas Paulette. I'm pretty sure it is not my grandfather, but maybe he was named due to some distant relation. Going back that far is usually impossible for blacks due to the slave trade and lack of family record keeping.

Cindy, you appear to be quite knowledgeable about the Pauletts. I agree with your description of Thomas Paulett's children by which wives. Also that the John Paulett who married the daughter (his cousin) of Blasingame Harvey was the son of Thomas Paulett,Jr. and Elizabeth Harvey. Do you have any information on Sarah, daughter of Thomas Paulett, Sr. and Semiramis Johnson? I have a theory that she married William Harvey, brother of Elizabeth Harvey, but believe I have seen another marriage listed for her.

I am looking for information on the immigrant(s) Paulett (or any variant of spelling) that stayed in Virginia after the initial immigration of Captain Thomas Paulett. According to most sources, he died without issue. There was a Robert Paulett who died shortly after immigration, but I cannot find the connection between these Paulett's and those who remained in Virginia and ultimately migrated to Georgia.

According to the book, "The Father of Representative Government", a John W. Paulett, of Virginia and then Tennessee, descended from this family.

I descend from Jesse C. Paulett, b. Louisa County, VA, married Harriet Barnett in Richmond, GA.

Jesse's father was Richard Paulett, son of Thomas Paulett and Catherine Smith. Thomas' parents were Thomas Paulett and Elizabeth Christmas.

The Thomas Paulett that married Semiramis Johnson, then Elizabeth Christmas moved to Louisa, VA from Hanover, VA. I am trying to find HIS ancestors.

That is as far back as I can reliably go.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Kim
Kim,
I wish that Jesse C. Paulett was my ancestor, but he isn't the same man. My Jessie Samuel Paulett was born 01 Jan. 1801 in N.C./GA. and died 19 Jun. 1896 in Cass Co., TX. He was married to Isabella Gilmore Williams 11 Dec. 1845 in Merwether Co., GA. I've looked at every Paulett family in GA. and I believe he is the son of John Paulett & Sarah Harvey. I send it in to the DAR and they want more proof.
Cindy White ---cindyw3@earthlink.net

Feel free to email me if you need help!

I just made application (and believe it has been approved) to the DAR under Richard's service. I had been given a copy of Richard's will, showing Jesse C. Paulett as his son, since I first made the posting regarding Jesse Paulett.

I would be happy to help you in any way.

Take care,

Kim

Kim,
The Thomas Paulett who was married to Elizabeth Christmas is the one born in 1710. He was first married to a Semiramis Johnson before 1728 daughter of Thomas Johnson. She died before 1750 because Thomas Paulett made a deed of gift to his children, Thomas, Elizabeth, Sarah, & William of slave each before he remarried to Elizabeth Christmas. Elizabeth was the child of a Thomas Christmas (named in his Will). He has another daughter Ann by Semiramis. Thomas Paulett & Elizabeth had children Richard, Jesse, Henry, Mary & David. Thomas Paulett's Will was Probate 11 Nov. 1771. Elizabeth Paulett moved on to Georgia with her children.
I'm trying to prove that my ancestor, Jesse Samuel Paulett was the son of John Paulett son of Thomas Paulett, Jr. & wife Eizabeth Harvey. Jesse Samuel Paulett was born in 1 Jan. 1801 married an Isbella Gilmore Williams (widow) in 1845. Thought I'd proved it, but the DAR wants more proof. Jesse Samul's parent died when he was young.
Cindy

Hi Cindy!

Thank you for your reply! Are you related to this line? And do you happen to know who Thomas Paulett's (who married Elizabeth Christmas) father was?

I am fairly certain that this line descends from the same family as Captain Thomas Paulett, original immigrant, but I cannot find a definitive link. Thomas Paulett circa 1710 is as far back as I can reliably go.

Again, thank you for your reply!

Kim

Kim,
The Jesse Paulett that you have that married the Harret "Barrett was the son of Richard Paulett & Catherine Smith. Richard was the son of Thomas Paulett & Elizabeth Christmas. Richard Paulett did have a brother Jesse Paulett, but he ever married. Your Jesse is mentioned in his father, Richard Paulett's Will.
Cindy

Greetings to all:

I am enquiring as to the family of Jesse Paulett, of Louisa CO.

I descend from Jesse Paulett b. 1797 (who married Harriet Barnett), but I am uncertain as to whom his father and mother was. My suspicion is that his father is Jesse Paulett, son of Thomas Paulett. I have no definitive proof of this.

Any information on this family will be most appreciated!

Kindest regards,

Kim Stephens

I am searching for Paulette family with some type of Georgia connection. My grandmother, Selma Marie Paulette, was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1915. All I know is that she had a least one sister, Velma, and that she lived in an orphanage at some point in her childhood. She passed away in 2001 and we have very little other family information.

I am looking for information on my grandmother, Selma Marie Paulette. She was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in approximately 1915. I know that she lived in an orphanage at some point in her childhood. I believe that she had a sister, Velma. She married Harry Booth Darcy, had one daughter, Paulette Fern Darcy, in 1939 then divorced. She lived most of her adult years in Houston, Texas and remarried Leonard Phillips. She passed away in 2001, leaving much of my ancestry a mystery.

Any information, however unsure, would be much appreciated.

Interested in any information on Thomas Johnson m. Elizabeth (Betsy) Paulett (Pollet) 1792, Charlotte County, VA.
She was the daughter of Thomas Paulett and Elizabeth Harvey.
Brothers included those who moved to Georgia with certain Harvey relatives, including Blassingame Harvey, Sr.
Elizabeth Harvey was daughter of Thomas Harvey and Elizabeth Blassingame.
All these individuals lived in Charlotte County, VA.
Before 1809, Thomas & Elizabeth Johnson moved to neighboring Campbell County, VA. He is probably one of three Thomas Johnsons shown on 1820 Campbell County census.
Obituary of Peyton Johnson, b 1809, Campbell County VA, died 1902, Randolph County, IN, establishes him as son of Thomas and Elizabeth. Obituary states that Thomas Johnson had 14 children. Other children may include Catherine Johnson m. William (Buck) Harvey and Elizabeth Johnson. Also seeking to establish as children. Sarah Johnson (b. c, 1805, m. Rowland Blankinship c. 1826 in Campbell County, VA) and Mary Fields Johnson (b. 1816 m. Edward Butler in 1837 in Campbell County, VA).
Interested in any information on this line.
Dan Cambridge
danielc@tampabay.rr.com
