Elizabeth Ann Payne b Wiveliscombe, Somerset England

Looking for Elizabeth Ann Payne b. circa 1856 to Henry Payne and probably Elizabeth Sealey (or spelling variations) She married John Hill Sept 1879 in St. James Parish Church Milton Portsea in the County of Southhampton. He was a gunner in the Royal Military . He was born circa 1856 in Carnbroe Lanarkshire Scotland.

His father was Hugh Hill of Wishaw, Scotland.
Witnesses at the wedding were Albert Allen and I believe, Elizabeth's aunt Patience Beatrice Allen nee Sealey. Albert was also in the military..Royal Marines in 1871.

If anyone is connected to the above people...would love to hear from you and exchange research notes. Thanks.
Sue

Joseph Reynolds b abt 1819 in Kentucky m Amanda Gatrell b abt 1822

I'm trying to identify the parents and birth date/location of Joseph Reynolds, born about 1819 in Kentucky.

Here is what I know. Joseph was married to Amanda Gatrell in Russell County, KY, by (pastor?) Wm. A. Cooper, on 21 April 1842. Amanda was born about 1822. Her parents were Dennis Gatrell (b abt 1875) and Agnes Payne (b abt 1789 to Philemon Payne and Rachel Wilson). Joseph and Amanda had nine children:
(1) James Tipton b abt 1842 probably in Wayne Co or Russell Co, KY. He m Loduska Leathers in AR in 1872. Then m Mary Elizabeth Heaton in 1878 in AR.
(2) Sabra Ann b abt 1845 probably in Wayne Co or Russell Co, KY. She m William Calvin Curnutt abt 1868 in Arkansas
(3) Sarah Ann b abt 1846 probably in Wayne Co or Russell Co, KY. She m Samuel Jackson Cowan abt 1871 in Arkansas
(4) Martin Taylor b abt 1848 probably in Wayne Co or Russell Co, KY. He m Rebecca Collins abt 1878 in Texas
(5) Artimecy Elizabeth b abt 1850 in Polk Co, MO. She m Samuel Jackson Cowan abt 1880 in Missouri. By that time Samuel was the widower of her sister, Sarah Ann.
(6) Lucinda A b abt 1853 in Polk Co, MO.
(7) Mary A b abt 1855 in Polk Co, MO.
(8) Joseph O b abt 1859 in Carroll Co, AR.
(9) Franklin Davenport b 1862 in Harrison, Carroll Co, AR. He m Margaret Elizabeth Collins (sister of Rebecca Collins, above) in 1882 in Denton Co, TX.

The family moved from Russell or Wayne County, KY, to Polk County, MO, about 1847-8. They moved about the same time as a few other close families from Wayne County, KY: McKinneys, Higginbothams, Dowells and Simpsons. Each of these families were related to Amanda through her mother, Agnes Payne. More specifically, males from each of these families married sisters of Agnes in the 1820s in Wayne Co, KY.

Joseph, Amanda, and several children are listed in the 1850 census in Polk Co. Some land patents list a Joseph Reynolds as a patentee in Polk Co. The family later moved to NW Arkansas and are listed in Carroll Co in the 1860 census. It appears that Joseph fought for the 15th Arkansas Northwest Confederate Regiment. Contrary to death info provided for Joseph on many ancestry.com trees, the Civil war records I've found don't indicate that he died, or even served in the battle of Vicksburg. Some civil war records indicate that a Joseph Reynolds from the 15th Arkansas NW Regiment lived until the end of the war.

Amanda remarried Henry Holt in Boone Co, AR, in 1870. She died in 1904 and is buried in Perryman Cemetery in Montague Co, TX, along with her sons James Tipton Reynolds and Martin Taylor Reynolds.

I'd be glad to be in touch with any other researcher looking at this family and any associated families. Of particular interest is any information on Joseph's origins, including birth location and/or parents. I'm glad to share the additional info that I have so please don't hesitate to reach me.

Thanks in advance!
Tommy Reynolds

William G died 1930.
George L Payne may have married Edna Lou Adcock. The third son was John Louis Payne born about 1900 and married Grace Stephenson. My Great Grandfather William M Payne divorced Lena around the late 1920's and remarried but to whom I do not know. He also worked as a motorman on the street cars in Nashville, Tennessee.
My Grandmother Lena Mays Payne went on to marry a N.E. Nicholson.. I know nothing of these family members. I would be grateful for any help I can get..

Joseph A. Payne Tennessee - Alabama

I am having trouble tracing my gggrandfather's family...he was Joseph A.Payne b 10/11/1874 in TN (I think) and d. 8/24/1913 in Huntsville, AL. He married Alice Gibbs on 12/25/1892 in Lynchburg, TN in Moore County. I know they started a family and lived in the Flat Creek area of Bedford County TN and moved to Huntsville, AL to work in the cotton mills. A book at the Huntsville library shows each child working in the mills and states that their kids were born in Flat Creek/Shelbyville area of TN. Their daughter, Dovie Payne, is my g grandmother. I am having trouble tracing the Payne family and the Gibbs family, and I haven't been able to go past Joseph or Alice. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Margaret, I see the msg about Charles B W Payne was posted in 2006. Wondering if you still have item available. He is in my tree. He is the husband of my grand aunt. I'm having much difficulty locating info on him. He was a self employed druggist. Could this be the same person? I'm located in the PGH area. Hoping to hear from you

Josephine L. (Snook)(Wilson) Payne of Independence, NY

I’m attempting to locate the name of my great-great-great-grandmother’s biological father. We did not know she had been adopted until just a few years ago when we stumbled across her birth mother’s will in land records and then ordered a copy of her adoptive mother’s will. My grandmother was born in 1856 as Josephine L. Snook in Steuben Co., New York, her full brother Charles A. was born in 1858 in Steuben Co., New York. I have not located either one in the 1860 census, but by 1865 Josephine had been adopted by Willit & Susan (Richmond) Wilson of Independence, Allegany Co., New York and her brother Charles was adopted by Willit’s brother Ward Wilson, also of Independence, and also went by the Wilson surname. Willit passed away in 1868 and Susan in 1874. It was not until we stumbled across their birth mother’s will, that we knew Josephine & Charles were actually siblings instead of cousins. Their birth mother was Sarah A. Mattison. Sarah married Charles T. Atwell of the Andover, Allegany Co., New York area sometime between 1865 and 1868. She passed away in 1909. Their half-sisters were Effie Frances (Atwell) Bice (wife of John Bice) and Nellie (Atwell) (Vanliene) Payne (wife of Melvin Payne). Grandma Jospehine married Frank H. Payne, son of Major & Orrilla Payne. Just wondering if there are any descendents out there that know more details of the Snook family, who their father was, what happened to cause the family to be divided up, etc. It would be great to hear from you.

Thanks,

Jewel
Henry Payne Raymond, Mississippi Military

Hello there,
My name is Dusty Letchworth, and I have some information on a Henry Payne from Raymond, MS (not sure if he was born there or lived there). I attended gunsmithing school in Lakewood, CO, and there is a gun shop there called, "The Gun Room." In one of their cases, they have a Springfield Trapdoor military rifle that belonged to a Henry Payne from Raymond, MS. It caught my eye because I am from Mississippi, and it was neat to me that here is another Mississippian mentioned in the most random of places. I don't have a lot of the specifics, but Henry Payne was involved in some kind of conflict in the Philippines, and they have his service rifle displayed in the shop. He isn't my family, but if there was something like that connected to my family, I would love to know about it. Hopefully this will help someone find an old heirloom that an ancestor of theirs used. The people at the shop are very nice and maybe can get you a picture of it or even sell it to you (not sure if they will sell it but who knows). If I can help anyone get in contact with the shop, just email me at dletchworth@gmail.com and put "rifle" in the subject box. http://www.denvergunroom.com/SlideShow/index.htm: here is the link to the slideshow that has the picture of it and information about the rifle.

I know this is a very old post, hope it finds you well.

I have a Bartley Payne of Alabama, most likely Jefferson County Alabama being named in the Locke family bible as being the son of Curtis or William Curtis Payne.
I am betting this is likely one and the same Bartley Payne?
My 4th great grand mother was Elizabeth Payne a sister to Bartley Payne.

I am looking for information for my sister-in-law on the Paynes from Ireland Twp, Dubois County, IN. Her grandfather was John T. Payne, born 1867 in Ireland Twp, Dubois County, IN, son of James Ballinger Payne and Mary J. James Balleinger Payne was a brother to Elijah L Payne. According to my sister-in-law's father's (Charles Augustus Payne)social security application, his father was John T. Payne and mother was Roda White, both from Ireland Twp. Can anyone put any "teeth" in all this. According to her father, his father and mother were killed by indians in Missouri when he was young and he was raised as an orphan.....Thanks wbh

All right . . . that still leaves us at square one: what was James Madison Payne Sr.'s original surname?

There is a possibility, if James Madison Payne Sr. moved to Tahlequah, that some museum there might have his personal papers with records of his original surname, but that's a long shot. If it isn't there, then Tennessee might hold some answers.

The 1820 Warren County Federal Census lists "Payne, William" twice. It also lists "Daniel Payne" and "Ransom T. Payne". http://tngenweb.org/warren/1820.txt

Although we do not know the exact date of Sarah Payne Randolph's birth, the genealogy that we have done would support your theory #2.
James Madison Payne, Sr. was unknown to us until we examined the documents included in the 1896 Dawes Commission application submitted by the grand daughter of Sarah Randolph, Mary Frances Randolph Hanna. In the application to the Commission for inclusion in the Cherokee Nation, Mary F. Hanna (my great grandmother) submits seven affidavits ranging in date from 1891 to 1896. In at least four of these affidavits it is sworn that Mary F. Hanna's father, George W. Randolph was the son of Sarah Randolph and the nephew of James Madison Payne. Two people swear that they were 'full' brother and sister and another person swears that he knew James Madison Payne and Sarah Randolph in the 'Old Nation' and he believed George W. Randolph to be Cherokee.
There are a number of family trees at ancestry.com for Elijah L. Payne. Of course, you can't just take the information at face value; you will want to find additional documentation, but it's a nice starting place.

I found the marriage records for Elijah Payne and Telitha Jane Williams (28 Sep 1848) and Elijah Payne and Mary Williams (28 Nov 1856) in the Indiana Marriage Collection, 1800-1941. Some databases say the second wife was named Mary Woolsey instead, but I don't know the source for their information.

What I would like to know is whether Elijah really had two daughters named Amanda -- one with each wife -- or did he just have one daughter named Amanda with his second wife.

Re: James Madison Payne Sr. Information

The thing I'm trying to find (ideally) is James Madison Payne's original last name. A tall order, yes, but we'll see what happens.

Sarah "Sally" Elizabeth Payne's vital dates seem to be: b. c. 1784, m. Isham Randolph c. 1796, d. after 1860. I'm having some trouble nailing down her birthdate (ranging from 1778-1790). The 1860 Tennessee census lists her as 76 years old.

If James Madison Payne Sr. was born in Tennessee in 1810, then he would have been 12 in 1828 at the Dwight Mission, having entered it in 1822 (as per the Cherokee Phoenix newspaper). This would make Sarah Elizabeth Payne roughly 26 years older than James Madison Payne Sr. She seems to have died after 1860, in McMinnville, Warren County, TN.

After 1828, the Dwight Mission moved to Sallisaw, OK, south of Tahlequah, OK. As noted in my last post, James Madison Payne Sr. may have been Secretary of Education of the Cherokee Nation, based in Tahlequah in 1845. This fits with what I've heard of him as a person of some importance in the Western Cherokee Nation.

Theory 1:

As I understand it, James Madison Payne Sr. was most likely sponsored by a wealthy Payne family. His adopted sister, Sarah Elizabeth Payne Randolph (b. c. 1784, m. Isham Randolph c. 1796. d. after 1860) came from here. Her parents would have been Capt. William and Elizabeth Payne.

Theory 2:

If Sarah was Cherokee, not White, then Isham Randolph (evidently a wealthy man) could have removed her from Cherokee culture when he married her around the age of 12. If this is the case, then she would have been the genuine sibling of James Madison Payne Sr.

I lean toward Theory 1 myself. I would like to know one thing for starters: how certain are we that James Madison Payne Sr. was born in Tennessee in 1810?
