Hi,

I'm curious about the name "Paynter" in Costa Rica.

I have a photograph of (I believe) an ancestor taken by "Paynter Brothers, San Jose). The only record of Paynter brothers in San Jose is Costa Rica, but I can't imagine the ancestor going to San Jose. Did Paynter Brothers ever do photography in Glasgow, Scotland?

Any help with this welcome.

David

I just found your post from 2000 and I hope this still finds you online. You said you have Joseph Paynter with relatives from Cornwall in your tree. My grandfather was Joseph Paynter, born and died in Pennsylvania 1875-1952. His father was Richard Paynter, born in England and his mother was Ellen Oliver, born in Pennsylvania (2nd gen in US). Is there any chance we are talking about the same family?

Hello, I'm responding to the query about John Paynter and Harriet Trinniman. My great grandmother was Cora Paynter, their daughter. She married Frank Wilson in Helena Montana and they had two children, Harriet (my paternal grandmother, born 1899) and Lionel. They moved to Kenilworth, New Jersey about 1909/1910. Cora died in Elizabeth New Jersey.

Hi,

I was about to post pdf's of the family tree and the page of the China Overaland News about the sinking of the Shun Lee when the message board says I can only post picture files. If you care to send me your e-mail I can send them. I am james.paynter@gmail.com. Captain Paynter took a wife out to China who died over there. The family tree will show he married first an Elen Thelma Saunders and then Elizabeth Tonkin. The tree is by my father and I think he has it a little wrong. Tonkin is a local family we have interbred with several times(!) and is probably the first wife he took out. When she died the second wife was more likely called Wearne as this has been used a a second name for the next two generations. I will try to get my father to be a little clearer next time I see him.
What would make him perk up would be a proper connection between our branch of the family and the descendanct of Camborne Paynter of Boskenna (Walter de la Mare fame), there is a close relationship.

I know there were more accomplished Paynters from there...not sure of the connection. Lewis Paynter was a city Councilman in Wilmington... his parents were JOHN and REBECCA.. Here's a link to obit.... he had a sister HANNAH who married Edward P. Robinson, who died in his forties...she them married a Simpson. All are burried at WILMINGTON & BRANDYWINE Cemetery.

http://o.mfcreative.com/f1/exports/8/8c8f8126-7155-4f16-90bb...

Mike Thompson
mt7676@aol.com
917-733-9938

G'day John,
WJP obtained his master mariners certificate [3344] at Plymouth in 1864,before serving on a small tonnage vessel the Deerfoot for ca 1.5 years prior to moving to Cardiff,Wales. He also had a second master mariners certificate [23255]!!
Was unable to trace his movements after the wreck of the Jardine-Matheson ship,Lismore during 1870 until 1878,when he became master of the Shun See [sp?]
On the 1881 census he was boarding with the widow of his uncle ,Louisa Hodge, age 63 and her three daughters at Gabriel Street St Ives.WJP is listed as age 39,retired master mariner and widower.I traced his family tree back to Thomas Hodge and Elizabeth Rescrue pre 1800,before realising that WJP was not my great grandfather.Did so much research on his history before learning that I was following an erroneous lead, that I was loath to toss the data out.If you need any other information let me know.Out of academic curiosity do you have any knowledge about his first marriage?Could not resolve that enigma!!
Cheers,
Bob

Will dig out the information on his early life and post it tomorrow. From memory he was involved in an earlier ship wreck and was demoted. Are you the descendant of his oldest son,William James born ca 1883 at St Ives?William sailed out of Cardiff on the Queen of Fac [1865-67] and the Regulator [1868-69]to Newfoundland and the Mediterranean. He was discharged as master of the Lismore, when it struck the wreck of a junk near the entrance to Woosung River and sank 9-11-
1870.My grandmother claimed on her marriage certificate, 1902,that he was her father. He was a widower, when he returned to St Ives, but I have not any proof that he was my grandmother's father. She was born in 1876,when he was probably in the near east.
Bob

I did not know of his days in Cardiff. I would be interested to hear about them. The family says he earned his money by having the use of 50% of the hold with Jardine Matheson - the common arrangement in those days. Perhaps his rise in the JM organisation was more to do with trading than the ability to sail straight? Certainly he was rich enough to buy a silver service that was ostentatiously heavy, it is a work out to use the forks and spoons!
Are you a relation? I am a great grandson.
James
William Paynter lived his early life in (Nr.6?) The Terrace, St Ives. He went to sea off the China Coast and worked his way up the ladder at Jardine Matthewson to become a captain. he was the first westerner to obtain a pilot's licence up the Yangtze river. He took delivery of the brand new "Shun Lee" in 1878 and traded in it for only 1 year when he sank it on a promontory off Shanghai. It was carrying passengers as well as cargo. All got ashore safely. I have a copy of a contemporary report in the China Post which I will try to scan and post.
He retired to Cornwall and built himself a large house outside St Ives which he shamelessly called Shun Lee. It is a guest house of the same name today.
Walter John Painter/Paynter was the father to Walter Charles Paynter who was my grandfather.

My great grandmother was Rebecca Maynor Paynter. She was married to Charles Paynter but I'm not sure of his middle or first name. They were married in Wyoming County West Virgina in the late 1800's and had nine children. Benjamin, Harrison, Holbert, Otis, Blain, Wirt, Elbridge, Fannie, and Esther. Otis was my grandfather. If this is the correct family, I can supply you with a little more information.

The detail of 13 children should be disregarded as I cannot confirm this and it may be related to an earlier generation. Walter Charles was born in Pretoria, South Africa on the 6/8/1895 and died in Port Elizabeth, South Africa 14/8/1953.

Walter Charles Paynter, my paternal grandfather married to Frieda Agnes Zunckel in Bergville, South Africa in the early 1920's. He served in the Colonial Police in Tanganyika (now Tanzania) as a young man, farmed on a family farm in the Weenen District, Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa, moved to Springs, SA and then To Port Elizabeth, SA where he died in 1953. His family came to South Africa from Cornwall in the latter part of the 19th century (not an official part of the 1820 settlers, he was one of 13 children, I am told, I am desperately trying to establish his parentage, if anyone can assist me I woul be very grateful.

I found Lewis Paynter's father -- JOHN PAYNTER and mother REBECCA both born in Delaware. John in 1775... Rebecca in 1785. There is a record of a John marrying a Rebecca in New Castle County in 1799, which would put her at about 15 or 16... not sure if that is them... this girl's maiden name is FRED. Any Help?
Paynters in New Jersey & Montana

I am looking for the descendants of John Paynter & Harriet Trinniman(various spellings of this surname). They started in Cornwall, England then came to USA where I found them in the 1870 Census in Morris County, New Jersey. They then went back to Cornwall, England where they are found in the 1881 UK census. Eventually some of the children returned to America. Two ended up in Butte, Montana and two in New Jersey. I have found 8 children through census records. They are as follows:
Alfred John b: Apr 1864 St. Day, Gwennap, Cornwall, England
Annie b: 1866 St. Day, Gwennap, Cornwall, England
Frederick b: Oct 1869 Rockaway, Morris, New Jersey
Cora b: Apr 1874 Newhaven, Connecticut
John Fred b: Nov 1876 Londonderry, Canada
Eva b: 1877 Vogue, Cornwall, England
Sylvester b: Jul 1879 Vogue, Cornwall, England
Fidella b: 1881 St. Day, Cornwall, England

Alfred and John Fred ended up in Montana and Cora and Sylvester in New Jersey. Eva died in 1881 in England. I haven't been able to find any more on Annie or Frederick. I found a Frederick Paynter at FreeBMD death in 1889 at the age of 19. That age would fit but not sure if it is him.

I would really love to get in touch with anyone who thinks they may fit into this line somewhere and share information.

If you want to talk you can email me at gltaylor71@msn.com

Abt. 1846
3	Richard b. Abt. 1849 married a Mary A. ????. They had 3 children George W. (married Elizabeth ???), Ella, and Amy E. Paynter.
4	Mary b. Abt. 1853
5	Emily b. Abt. 1855
6	William b. March 1858 married Julia E. Day in about 1879 and they had 3 children according to Census records. Edna L. (married Alonzo Morris Allen), Elsie, and ??? (this name could be either Thomas or Frank but I am not sure, it is in the 1900 Census).
7	Thomas b. Abt. 1860/61

Mary and 6 of her children (all but John) came to America in 1865 on the ship Hibernia and sailed into New York. I have not been able to find out when and where John came into America. I have found the whole family in Springfield, NJ. in the 1870 Census (including John and Harriet with their family). John and Harriet then go back to England and are in the 1881 UK Census. It looks like the rest of the family stayed in the New Jersey area. I have found the family members throughout all of the Census records but would like more information. If any of these Paynter/Painter family members fit in your family tree I would love to talk to you and share information. Please feel free to email me at gltaylor71@msn.com. Thanks.

Gina Taylor
