In the 1901 Census of London, in Stoke Newington Parish, Alfred and Louisa Payton show an 18 year old stepson of Alfred's named Charles Fruich.

On 7 October 1894, Alfred Henry Payton, 26, son of Alfred Payton, married Louisa Ellin Fruish, daughter of Charles Thunkinson, in the parish of Hoxton St. Mary in London. I haven't found these two generations of Alfred Paytons together in the earlier census records.

James Oscar Peyton, Julia A. Shaler, Anna May Peyton

I have a Bertha G. (?) Mills listed as d/o Howard H. Mills and Anna May Peyton on her death cert. I am trying to sort this all out. Bertha listed her name as Bertha M. Patterson on a marriage cert in Miami, KS, to a William T. (Therman/Thurman/Herman) Dudley. She also had a marriage to a James Dudley prior to Wm. T. Bertha had a daughter, Opal/Opel) with James Dudley (on Opal's birth cert James was listed as "dead" and a ? in legitimate box). Opal/Opel, was in a St. Louis orphanage on the 1930 census. My uncle married Opal, but after she changed her name and went to live with, byt not adopted by, a family in the U.City area of MO.

I don't know why Bertha listed her name as Patterson on the marriage cert unless there was yet another marriage earlier than the one to James, OR she took the Patterson name because she was adopted or lived with a Patterson family. I can find nothing to indicate either possibility.

William Thurman/Therman/Herman Dudley is found as Herman W. Dudley on the 1920 census living with Bertha and Opel.

Bertha signed Anna May Peyton Mills death cert as the source of information.

Anna May Peyton is the d/o James Oscar Peyton and Julia A. Shaler and I can tie her back to Rufus Shaler and Hannah Cole in CT.

William Thurman/Therman/Herman Dudley's father appears to be Charles Barnett or Barnett Charles Dudley and Alice Parrish, d/o James S. and Candace Parker Parrish--the best I can tell.

If you have any information on these families, please contact me at sbjol1@netzero.com or reply to this message.

Thank you,
Sandy Lipsey

I purchased a family photo of Henry Beecher Payton (1879 Texas - 1944 Norman, Cleveland, Ohio) along with his wife Della and son Chester. I am NOT related, and am trying to get the photo to someone who is. There is also another individual baby photo of Chester (1901-1975).

Henry Beecher Payton was the son of Logan and Elizabeth Payton. If you are related and would like the original, just let me know!

EDIT: Just realized I also have a photo of their daughter Mabel Leona Payton as a baby in the pile I bought if anyone is interested.

I also believe the Keokuk Payton's & the Louisa Co. Payton's are connected. Just how, I am not sure. They have the same names (common names of course!). John, William, James. When looking in other places they give their place of birth as Iowa & it sure complicates things. If you figure anything out, let me know!!
okienana50@gmail.com

My gggmother. Born Apr 1852 in Pennsylvania. I do not believe Payton is her maiden name. I believe she married a Payton, gave birth to Harriet Payton (my gggrandmother) in Pennsylvania in 1871, then lost her husband. Remarried to August Probst in 1875.

Trying to find her maiden name and parents' names. Hitting a brick wall. Thanks for any help.

Re: Leroy Payton/Millie Rogers

The only way the question of Leroy Paytons first wife being a Native American would be for a descendant to take the Native American DNA test at Familytreedna. It can be either male or female for this test. My brother took it and he is 100% European. The story in our maternal side of the family is that our great-grandmother was Apache. Turns out she was actually of English Ancestry. And, just after the 1838 Cherokee removal there were MANY families who tried to get government money claiming they were Native Cherokee or Creek or Shawnee from Georgia and North Carolina, but were not. They paid real natives to claim that they knew the applicant was native. And, the Dawes rolls are filled with whites who did remove with their indian in-laws, children, etc. When I was studying the Dawes rolls for a client, I found her great-grandmother but the great-grandmother was white and it was her sister was married to a native. Don't forget. The rolls give the percentage of native a person has. But, in case Leroy Payton's first wife was native, his children would probably be on the rolls.

Hi Rachelle. This is not my family, but I have some information.

I believe Dewey is in Jefferson County, KY in 1930? He was also there in 1917 when he registered for the draft as Dewey William Payton, and gave his nearest relative as Minnie Payton Minter. His brother Hewitt Payton was also in Jefferson County in 1917.

I have Dewey and Hewitt Peyton as the children of William and Minnie (Mason) Peyton, in Harrison County, Indiana in 1900. Dewey is shown as born April 1899, which matches the draft card and the social security death index.

I have William as:

1. Augustus Peyton, born 1760-1770
2. Elisha Peyton, b. abt 1817, Kentucky, m. Sarah Ann Hornback 2 March 1847 in Harrison Co., IN, daughter of James and Mary Hornbeck.
3. William Payton, b. Feb 1869 in IN, m. Minnie Mason 2 Oct. 1892 Harrison Co., IN, daughter of William Mason and Rebecca Hornback

Richard Payton

Martin Payton of Adams County, Illinois

Martin Payton first appears in Adams County, Illinois, in 1840 when he marries Elizabeth Dunn. They have two daughters, Frances (1841) and Zylpha (1844). Rebecca died before December 1847 when Marin married Eliza Ann Doty. According to census records Martin and Eliza have five children. Martin and his first two daughters are mentioned in court documents regarding the estate of Elizabeth Dunn's father in 1850. Martin is not on any census except the 1850 and he is not listed on tax records. Martin's youngest child is born in 1858. Martin's children indicate on census records that their father was born in Kentucky.

There are others in Adams County with the Payton surname - William who married Nancy Arterburn and lived in Ursa Twp., Sarah Jane who married Nelson Lasley in Crawford Co., IN, living in Adams County by 1836, John who married Mary Mahala Goodson in Crawford Co., IN, Rebecca married Justice Perrigo, Mary married William Stull, Jeremiah who married Lucy Ann Perrigo. I have no proof any of these people are siblings of Martin.

According to a coroner's report "Charles Payton died September 1840, inquest held September 29, 1840. Death due to natural ways on farm of Mr. Lasley, 3 miles east of Liberty. Body moved to house of son-in-law because of inclemency of the weather. Mr. Lieb." Is Charles the father of any or all of the above Paytons living in Adams County? All except William who lived in Ursa Twp. lived in the southern part of Adams County.

Any hints would be appreciated.

Elaine
