I do not know who the William Pearcy who was listed as a purchaser in 1851 is. It could be the man who is listed in the 1810-1820 census records of Louisiana but if it is, then he was not enumerated in 1830, 1840 or 1850.

I know relatively little about this family (which is not my own line). William T. Pearsey appears apparently out of no where in 1810.

I am interested in your Pearsey information.

I am a descendant of Levi's brother, William M. Galloway (both boys being sons of Matthew Galloway & his first wife Elizabeth Beaver).

I am very familiar with the Levi Galloway estate information (1851, Itawamba Co, MS) and I have seen that a William Pearsey was a purchaser. But I am confused about some seemingly contradictory information you posted about William, unless I misunderstood or you were referring to a second William.

First you said, in regards to William T. Pearsey who married Harriett Galloway, that the last time he was found in a census was in 1830 Washington Parish, LA and that he must have died shortly afterwards. By 1835, Harriett (Galloway) Pearsey had moved and was selling land in Warren Co, MS and then Neshoba Co, MS.

But then you reference the 1851 Levi Galloway estate where a William Pearsey purchased a white steer. If this is the same William Pearsey, then he could not have died ca 1830 and then purchased the steer in 1851.

If it is another William Pearsey (such as a child), I did not see a reference to that or the context. I did not see a William listed among his children.

Who is the William Pearsey who purchased the white steer in 1851?

Also, I think I can provide some additional information on the Galloways should you need it. Harriett Galloway, if you are correct was the daughter of Robert and Ann Sellers Galloway. (I did not have her listed as such). Robert & Ann had at least 2 sons named Thomas and Alfred D.

I have recently become familiar with this Galloway line as relates to Levi Galloway & his line. For years our Galloway line has been at a dead end on the ancestry of Matthew (Levi's father), but since 1908, people have believed his father to be a "Tait Galloway" based on another Galloway descendant's research. (Her name was Irene Dabney Galloway who wrote the booklet, "Matthew Gallaway and his Descendants." Most descendants believe that Tait is the father despite Irene not providing any sources for that information & despite apparently no data to back that up. Some have even managed to track a Tait Galloway, his wife, and his parents, however, I believe I have recently "proved" that this Tait cannot possibly be his father based on his marriage date & 2 "original" Parish books in England which show his marriage as 1797, despite Matthew being born in 1759! Thus began the search for Matthew's REAL father.

Early last year, I found a record of the earliest known Matthew Galloway in the US. (Apparently in the 1700s-early 1800's, Matthew Galloway was not a popular name). That Matthew was listed on a guardianship in 1764 in New Hanover Co, NC as the son of a Thomas Sr. Other siblings were a Catherine, Thomas, and Sarah. (Two older Galloway boys who appear to be older brothers & not listed in the guardianship were a John and a William).

If this information and at least one other researcher's information is accurate (he did not have any info on Matthew but the guardianship record), then the Robert who married Ann Sellers is the son of Thomas Jr. (brother to Matthew) and grandson of Thomas Sr.

So there is a known connection to Harriett Galloway Pearsey (& her husband William T. Pearsey) and Levi Galloway of the estate record. Levi Galloway and Harriett Galloway Pearsey would be 1C1R; first cousins once removed. This, to me, only serves to verify the relationship of my Matthew (1759-1824) to this Thomas Galloway, Sr.

I realize this may be far more information on the Galloways than you want or need, but I felt I should put it out there in case anyone researching the Pearseys or trying to ID the Pearsey who purchased from Levi needed it.

I'd love to hear back from you on the ID of the Wm. Pearsey who purchased the steer &/or the seemingly discrepancy of the dates (death vs. purchase) if you were, in fact, referring to the same William Pearsey.

Thanks!

Briana Felch (poetmom @ aol.com)

Hi. I descend from John Pearcy, who migrated from Burlescombe, Devon, to Virginia in 1659. Burlescombe and Uffculme are only a few miles apart in Devon, and are the only places I have found in that region where the Pearcy surname existed in the 1600's.

I am looking for a male Pearcy from the Pearcy/Webber line of Uffculme to have their DNA tested to see if there is a match between our lines.

I had my DNA tested by Family Tree DNA -
http://www.familytreedna.com/paternal_test.html
and am registered as Group II with the Pierce Family DNA Project (Southern Branch) http://www.piercedna.com/

Please contact me for more information if interested.

Michael Pearcy

Hi, I never received any Cemetery listing for Morgan County from the person who posted that back in 2003 unfortunately.
But I'd suggest you check on the "Find a Grave" website. They probably have all the info you're looking for. Also if you type in your search engine "Morgan County Indiana Cemeteries" you'll probably get their county genealogy website. There you can check for what's currently available.

Hope that helps in your search. I'll check my tree info, if I see any of your names, I'll forward to you.

256. John Pearcy was born in Burlescombe, Devonshire, England. He immigrated from Bristol to Virginia in 1659 according to the Bristol Registers of Servants Sent to Foreign Plantations, 1654 - 1686. There is no evidence that I have seen regarding his ancestors. Also, I have seen no evidence regarding his spouse, and I believe that it is highly unlikely that he married Jane Stanwood in Massachusetts.

Susan: The only Sarah I have as a daughter of John Lewis Pearcy was born in 1763 in PA or VA. However, she did die in Cloverdale, Putnam Co., IN in 1831 which makes me wonder if she died in childbirth with your Sarah Jane. However, the child's name would have been Erwin, and not Pearcy. So, I guess I can't help you there.

John Lewis Pearcy had six sons: George, Jacob, John, Christian, Joseph, and Henry. John and Christian seem to have remained in VA while the others migrated West---George and Henry to Shelbly, Co., KY; Jacob to Putnam Co., IN; and Joseph to Monroe, IN.

Jacob (my ancestor) did not have a daughter named Sarah, but his sons, John, George and Jacob II could have had a daughter by that name as they were of an age to have sired a child in 1831 and all remained in Putnam Co., IN.

Putnam County has pretty good records and the Cloverdale Cemetery people are very helpful when you want to try to trace people. Their records just might have a listing of children still living. John died in 1863, George died in 1842 and Jacob II died in 1853.

I hope that this is helpful.
By chance, I found your outline of the Pearcy family. I have been the guardian of Marian Margurite Pearcy Fairbank for many years. Her name was misspelled. She died Nov. 3 2009.

Marian's brother, Gene Pearcy, died Oct. 19, 2009.

Just thought you would like to know.

Judy B.

Hello,
I've done a lot of research on PEARSEY but what I've found is that although you'll find scattered references in the UK and America to that surname, usually you only find it one or two times, most of the time the same people spell their name PERCY/PEARCY/PIERCY, etc. I don't have anything on your particular family unfortunately. My PEARSEY family appears in America from 1758 onward. I don't know where they came from at this point.

I would search for your known ancestors under any related spelling that I listed above.

Nettie Pearcy Moore was my great-grandmother. She lived in Lee County Virginia for a while and then she moved to OH to live with her niece until she passed away in the mid 80's. We were very close. She had 3 daughters - Pearl, Myrtle and I think that the other daughters name may have been Vera - I will check with my mother on that. I think there was also a son named Eb. I will check on that too. I look forward to hearing from you.

Percy is a name that originates in France, from the town of Perci so that follows.

One thing to remember is that for some reason one of William's children said his father was born in S.C. in the 1880 census (probably J.C. but I don't have my notes in front of me). I can't verify that either.

On Ancestry.com there is a database of early (1700's) births/deaths in Louisiana and there are a number of people named Percy or some variation and I think they're French. Names like Felix Percy occur. Note a man named Felix Pearsey is a descendant of William T. Pearsey. Felix is not a name common to the English Pearsey/Pearcy/Percy family. I couldn't find any ties to William T.

I have a 91 yr old uncle who says the Piercys came from Canada. The time frame would have be right for the Acadian expulsion and settling in LA. I have no proof of this - but this is family tradition. Have you ever come across any indication of this? The Piercy name is not uncommon in Canada.

Just a couple of notations I have come across:

1) Transportation Ships for the Expulsion from Nova Scotia (Acadia) to Louisiana.
10/29/1755 sailing from Pisiquid - 1st wave of expulsion -
Ship: Sloop Ranger
Captain Piercy
91 tons
182 men (323 aboard)

There were some Acadians that settled in MD first - then moved to LA:
2) "Ranger - Wm. Burkman, Caines Bay, owner. Francis Peirey, Captain, Order from Alexander Murray, Commander of his Majesty's Troops at Pisgate arrived Severn River, Annapolis 29 November 1755. Sent to Oxford Maryland." "Dolphin - Zebediah Farnman, master, Sent to Lower Marlborough, Patuxent River".

Thanks,

Sylvia

Henry Pearsey is linked mainly through his place of birth (LA) and time (about 1828). He's linked to Lucy because they lived together in 1850 I believe.

Beyond that there's no real proof yet. Marsha Pearsey is questionable. I think I saw that on the LDS site but I've never seen her name otherwise connected to this family.

There are few if any Pearsey families in this region at this time. I don't think there's a link to the Charles Percy family of Mississippi which wasn't far away but my research sees no connections.

Thank you so much for the info!

I found the Civil War info on Jeremiah C Pearcy on "Footnote". I have a subscription. It was very informative. I simply attached a file to the query to post it.

What documentation do you have as proof as to Wm & Harriet's other children, Henry & Lucy? Do you know what connection Oliver Fairwell has to the Pearcys?

Note info for Harriet Pearcy:

The first record made in Deed Book A was a land transaction, by Harriett Pearsey to Job Martin, conveying 40 acres known as the SW 1/4 of the NE 1/4, Section 20, Township 9, Range 10.
Hello,
This is just about all I have on the first 2 generations of this family. I don't believe they are related to my family which lived in Orange Co. Va. from 1742-1799, then moved to Ohio and Indiana by 1820.

I find your Civil War document amazing (how did you post it?) and very informative. It seems to definitely link J.C. Pearcy to WIlliam T. Pearsey who did live in Baton Rouge Parish at one time.

1.	William T. Pearsey was born about 1790 in South Carolina. Note: Although there is one reference to the birthplace of William T. Pearsey, there were few people with the Pearsey surname in South Carolina in the 1790’s. There were a fair number in Burke County, North Carolina, who used the Pearsey spelling consistently. It’s a possibility that William descends from that family. He married May 18, 1814 in Warren County, Mississippi to Harriet Galloway, born about 1795 in Brunswick County, North Carolina to Robert and Ann (Sellers) Galloway. His age comes from the 1820-30 census records. His place of birth comes from the 1880 census of Newton County, Mississippi, when his son Jeremiah informed the census taker that his father was born in South Carolina, mother in Kentucky.

William is found in the 1820 East Baton Rouge census aged 26-45. His son Henry was born at Baton Rouge, 1828. In 1830 William is found in the Washington Parish, Louisiana census, aged 40-50. William is not found after 1830 in any record. He evidently died shortly afterward. Harriet Pearsey sold land in Warren County, Mississippi, 1835. She then moved to Neshoba County, Mississippi and entered land in that county and Newton County, Mississippi. By 1850 she was also deceased. Two of their children, Henry and Lucy, were living in the household of Oliver S. Fairwell and his wife Caroline, in East Carroll Parish, Louisiana, 1850.

Levi Galloway was born 3 October 1784 in North Carolina. He was the son of Matthew Galloway and Elizabeth Beaver. When Levi was a young age, Matthew moved his family to Oglethorpe County, Georgia where Levi married Sinia Scogin on 10 October 1810 (daughter of Elick and Mary Scogin). Levi later removed to Alabama and during the early 1840s immigrated to Itawamba County where he settled on a 700 acre farm south of Mantachie Creek, north of Keys Cemetery.

ESTATE SALE PURCHASERS
Sale of the personal estate of Levi Gallaway dec'd. made at his late residence in the county of Itawamba on the 22nd day of December AD 1851 by A.T. He was listed as Jerrymiah Pearsey in the 1853 tax list of Leake County. Jeremiah C. Pearsey is aged 45 in the 1860 census of Leake County. He was aged 52 in the 1870 census of Newton County, Mississippi. In 1880, J.C. Percey, aged 62, born Louisiana was listed in the Newton County, Mississippi census. Henry Lewis Pearsey was born about 1828, Baton Rouge, Louisiana to William and Harriett
Galloway) Pearsey. He married to Elizabeth J., last name unknown. By 1852 the family was living in Arkansas. He lived from 1858-70 in Drew County Arkansas. During the Civil War, H.L. Pearsey served with distinction in the Confederate Army.
