Benjamin T. Peckham - Civil War Enlistee - Enlistment Consent Form

I realze this is a redundant post as I started a new post on this message board about the same individual but so far have gotten no responses. I hope you can help me or point me in the right direction to someone who is a direct descendent of Benjamin as I would like the form to go to one of his direct descendents rather than sit in one of my "collectable" files.

What I am looking for is a direct descendent of Benjamin T. Peckham who served in Company D, Massachusetts 477 Infantry Regiment Militia from August 1862 to September 1863. I have the original consent form signed by his sister Abby F. Knife or(Knipe)dated Aug 30, 1862 giving her consent for Benjamin to enlist. There is also a hand written notation stating that "he has lived with me since he was eight years of age, that his father has never experience any control over him since said age and that he has been allowed by said father to make his own contract and receive his own earnings."

Thank you.

C.
Might be a cousin, but there is no direct line. I have ties to the Hunters. George, Abraham, and William of Hunter's point, NY. Abraham Hunter and Caroline are where our lines cross. :)

If you find a line that links us to the president, please let me know. I've as yet, not found any. I grew up hearing this as well.

Feel free to look at my tree if you like.

Mary Hunter was married three times. To Edward Payson Lee Dudley then to Charles W. Lockwood and then to Edwin Felt Peckham. I have a note from Caroline Hunter who wrote on July 31, 1935 somthing about Sally Harrison was our cousin to President Benjamin Harrison. I'm still looking into that. I believe she married John Randolph.

I have no Peckham's in my tree. I think I'm from the other side.

Also, just a friendly suggestion about that book. Much of it is correct. But I think the lady who wrote it took some leaps of faith as well. I find no link between us and the presidential Harrison's, or the Virginia Randolph's. I find FitzRandolphs which are a different line from the Virginia Randolphs.

It is so much fun finding family members you didn't know you had! I have also met a lady who turned out to be my second cousin. W have the same Great grandfather. Turns out, she lives about 100 miles from me.
It was so wonderful to get your note. Nice to meet you too. The family book was given to me by my father, and his father gave it to him who was nephew to Mary R.H. Peckham. So that would make Mary Peckham my Great, Great Aunt. I wonder if we have the same family book. I have a Aunt that is still alive and is Handing me down things that belong in the family which have been handed down through the years. She tells me some things about family, but they are vague. She is in her Ninties. I am going through the book and trying to get the genealogy to follow the book, which take alot of time I do not have right now. Lets stay in touch. Cousin.
Hi,

Helen Berryhill Acheson was my wife's great aunt. I found a picture of their grave marker in Notre Dame Cemetery, Ottawa, Ontario at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~snaylor/On...

I haven't found any more information about her in particular yet, but I do have a fair amount of other information about the Achesons if you're interested.

Dan.
Hi Earl,
I need to make a correction to this morning's e-mail to you regarding Rufus W. Peckham. His correct date of birth was 1838. Also, going over my records, it is possible that his connection to my great grandmother, Arlette Peckham Brown (1st cousin once removed), may have been through her father (unknown), instead of her mother, Charlotte Minerva Peckham. Peckham may have been Charlotte's married name instead of her maiden name. I'd really appreciate any information you would be able to share with me. Again, thanks much. Judy Elliott

Hi Earl,
Wow, what an incredible list of Peckhams you have! I was wondering what you might have on Associate Justice of US Supreme Court Rufus W. Peckham (1895-1909)? He was the 1st cousin one removed from my great grandmother, Arlette Peckham Brown. Arlette was born in Rockford, IL (1861-1933) and was married to Lafayette Lawrence (1855-1835). My grandparents were married in 1883 in IL and moved to WA. They lived in Chehalis, WA for over 25 years. My grandfather was elected Mayor of Chehalis in 1905. I have a copy of the newspaper article regarding the election that states Arlette was Rufus' 1st cousin once removed. I also have a copy of a newspaper photo of Rufus. Arlette's mother was Charlotte Minerva Peckham (1826-abt 1880). The only information I have on Charlotte's husband is that he was born in Rhode Island. Can you possibly help me? Thanks so much, Judy Elliott

My 2nd Great Grandmother was Sarah Elizabeth Peckham. I am looking for information regarding her where abouts after 1910. She was born August 10, 1890 in Stonington, Connecticut to John Bliss Peckham and Phebe Ann Crandall. On the 1910 census, she is listed as Sarah E Durfee living with William Henry Durfee and their two children - Thurman and George in the house of William's parents. Between 1910 and 1920 Sarah and William parted ways. William is listed on the 1920 census as divorced living with Thurman. Sarah and George were never heard from again. My great aunt mentioned that William was told that she was living in Providence, RI and was working as a housekeeper in a rectory. I have not been able to locate any records. She also mentioned that they had a daughter - Edith. Edith suppossedly passed away when she was 5 or 6 years old, and she is unsure whether Edith was in fact William's. It is believed that Edith was the cause of them parting ways. Sarah may have remarried which may be the reason why I am unable to locate any information. Any information anyone may have would be EXTREMELY appreciated!

Written communication is fine, but I'll just be slower in passing info along. Obviously typing takes longer than speaking.

I don't know what you know about David P. Peckham, but he was convicted of polygamy and served a few years in prison. If you email me at the address provided in my initial response, I'll send you the newspaper articles that chronicle his, ahem, activities. It looks like my great-great grandmother was his first wife. He had at least three more before he met your great-grandmother Ida. She waited for him to get out of prison and he stayed with her for the rest of his life.

Do you happen to have a photo of David Palmer Peckham? He is about the only direct ancestor of mine who lived in the age of photography for whom I don't have a picture. I'm dying to find one.

Again, send me an email when time permits and I'll send along a lot of really interesting material.

Doug

Hello Doug. I would be interested in learning what Peckham family history you could share. However, I would prefer to communicate through this website or private emails, if that is alright with you. I have learned some useful information from this website and from help given by my Uncle who has done an indepth study of the Peckham family. David P. Peckham was my great grandfather. I was told he was a fisherman and died at sea. His wife Ida and their son Herbert Palmer Sr [my grandfather] actually lived at the Curtis Home in CT for awhile. It was an institution for widows and orphans. I found this tip from the 1920 federal census. My grandfather Herbert Palmer Peckham was not what you would call 'husband or father of the year'. He died at 52 from chirrosis when I was only 7. I had never met him due to the hatred he had for my father who was of Irish descent. Which of David Palmer Peckham's children are you descended from? I hope to hear from you again. Take care.

WOW im so glad you responded. I have been only working on my family tree for 4 weeks, my mom had done alot of the work prior to my efforts. I have one major question.
Henry Edward Peckham b:1525 d:1616 seems to have had 2 fathers but the same wife. Either father John George or father Henry, however he married the same woman grace Sambour. adn they had the same children.
Could you share what you have on the parentage of Henry Edward. So i can move forward.
