Re: Pedroso, Echevarria family

I have just returned from Berlin, Germany and the University there is looking into finding whether Joaquin Pedroso y Echevarria studied there. Aparently he came to this University from Cuba to do his studies there (ie. family did not come from Germany) Will report in any other findings.
More on Joaquin Pedroso:

http://books.google.com/books?id=dIgCag5WZI0C&pg=PA176&a...

Sugar & Railroads by Oscar Zanetti y Lecuona y Alejandro Garcia Alvarez

"Just 3 months after the merger, the president of the new company and Arturo Ambland, it's secretary set off for London to seek refinancing of the earlier loans arranged by Ferrocarril de la Bahia and Caminos de Hierro de La Habana...

Ferrocarril del Oeste's slow advance towards the city of Pinar del Rio was carried out at the cost of the assumption of enormous debts, which made the company's economic situation desperate by the beginning of the 1880's. Unlike other railroad companies on the island Oeste had not been dependent on foreign credit when it laid out ut;s kubes but had obtained it's financing from it's promoters, the Pedroso brothers, who drew on their own funds and what they would obtain in Havana's fianancial market. This circumstance shaped the debt in such a way that around 2 million pesos of the company's 3-millio-peso debt in 1881 were owed to the Pedroso family..."

from my grandmother Caridad Morales y Pedroso:
"Joaquin Pedroso y Echevarria built the first railroad that went from Havana to the nearby town of Alquizar . He brought the first railroad engine to Cuba (a very small one) and in the train station in Havana they had this engine as showcase for anyone to see. Also there was a statue of Don Joaquin at the main train station. The revolution took it down and Tita had an oportunity of claiming it, but she never did.
Samuel, minha avó paterna tinha o sobrenome Pedroso.
Pedroso, Echevarria family

Joaquin Pedroso y Echevarria (1797-1881) was married to Michaela Montalvo (1797-1881) in Havana, Cuba. He was very rich and practically owned Matanzas province in Cuba. He was in banking and was a civil engineer. He stuied in Germany in the early 1800's. He built the first railroad that went from Havana to the town of Alquizar. The Pedroso family is thought to have come from Germany to Cuba. In Germany there was a small town called Pedroso and furthermore they might have been Jewish (Sephardic?...were they being persecuted?)
