Samuel and Sarah went to Australia in 1810 with the 73rd Regt of Foot in HMS Dromedary.

Pretty certain, have chased this in Shields and Tasmania.

Mike

William Thomas Peel

Through research, I have found my ancestor, William Thomas Peel, who was my great great grandfather. He was born in England and immigrated to St. Paul, Minnesota and appears to be the illegitimate grandson of Sir Robert Peel, the former Prime Minister during Queen Victoria's Reign. His father was Viscount William Peel, a naval officer who died in India. There is no record of his mother's name. Has anyone found a record of this in their searches of Peel family lineage? I would like to know if I am directly descended from Sir Robert Peel.

Peel family in Liverpool, Lancashire, England

Hi All,

I'm looking for more information about the Peels that were in Liverpool, Lancashire, England. I've traced back (with the help of these message boards!) as follows:
My great, great, great Grandfather John Peel 1827-1901, who was married to Barbara or Barby 1836-1877.
Their children:
John Peel b1855
Mary Peel b1856
Robert Peel b1870
Thomas Peel 1852-1896, my great, great Grandfather, who was married to Agnes Ellen Whittam 1852-1894.
I have the family tree done quite well for following generations, so if anyone is interested let me know.
However I'm really interested in further details about the people above, in particular John Peel's siblings and even parents if possible.
Of course like everyone researching the Peel genealogy I'm interested to know if there's any connection to Sir Robert Peel, especially since we all come from Lancashire and surrounds!
Many thanks for your help.
Rachel Peel

Hi Wendi and Traci,
I'm wondering how far you got with this enquiry? I'm just starting out tracing my family tree and am back to the Peel family in Liverpool, Lancashire in the 1800s.
I have John Peel, 1827-1901, married to Barbara, 1836-1877, who had children John b1855, Sarah b1862, Mary b1856, Robert b1870 and Thomas b1852.
I know that Thomas remained in Liverpool with his wife Agnes, where my family then stems from.
I wonder if John b1827 was any relation to William, who moved to Boston. Do the names above appear in your trees at all? Particularly John and Barbara, as that is where my research has stopped.
Thanks in advance,
Rachel Peel

Jen,

I tried writing you at the email address below and it did not go through. I hope you're still checking this board. Here was my email:

Jen,

I'm following up on the old postings below.

I descend from the Standlee line. In the notes I have taken from reading
"Story of An Eary Settlement in Central Arkansas" are the following:

Surname Peel mentioned as one of Mr. Standlee's son's in law. Inference this is a reference to a yet unnamed second daughter.
Footnotes state James E. Peel in 1825 bought 80 acres West Half, North-West Fourth, Section 14, Township Four North, Range 15 West.

I see from the exchange below, you and D'Lynn were of the understanding this may have been a Louisa Standlee. Another researcher has suggested this may have been a Mary Ann Standlee. Could you help me with this point? If you
do trace your line back to the Standlee family, pehaps I can help you there.

Thanks,

Karen Allman

Hi Kristy,

Thanks very much for your reply.

Unfortunately, I cannot find my Edmund's birth/bap record, so I cannot be sure who his parents were. I suspect he was the illegitimate son of Sir Robert's (Snr) sister Elizabeth. He was born in 1791 in Cossey Norfolk, which I cannot find in any atlas or the web. There is another Edmund Peel (Edmund Yates) born in the same year.

There is a definite connection because my grandmother had police artifacts in the house and she claimed that Sir Robert (Snr I assume) left my Edmund money. Sir Robert (Jnr)' will doesn't mention him.

Thanks very much for your offer of info. Do you happen toknow if Sir Robert (1st Baronet) had a sister Elizabeth? I would love to be able to check her out, but most of the info on the net follows the male Peel's.

I have a few things that I took from the internet several years ago. If you would like a copy, just send me a message on:

cmneale
@optusnet.com.au

I live in Melbourne.
Horace, Margaret Jane "Jennie" Anderson Peel is also buried in the Peel plot at Magnolia Cemetery. I just read about her funeral in the July 16, 1943 edition of the Burlington paper. There is also a photo of Claude on the Bethlehem Christian Church web site. Incidentally, Robert Henry "Bob" Peel, Claude's half-brother, was born in 1864 and died in 1943. His wife, Florence V. Neff Peel, was born in 1868 and died in 1955. They are buried in the Orangeport Cemetery in Niagara County, NY.

There is actually a Peel family stone but no marker. However, I spoke with several older residents in town who said that he was buried there. It is possible that someone just forgot to put up a marker for him, or it was lost, damaged, or destroyed over the years. I recently had a marker replaced at that cemetery that I had found broken off and buried under the grass and dirt. I live just around the corner from the cemetery and will go by there this weekend and see if there appears to be an unmarked grave in that plot or if there is a marker under the grass.

I'm trying to find information for the Peel family who were farmers from huntingdon. As i have been told my grandfather was sent to Durham from the farm to work in a hotel which the family owned. the farm is now no longer in the Peel family but i would love to find some information to pass on to my father.

Hi Sue,
Thank you so much for that information. I don't know my Aunt's name as the worker had talked to her. He wasn't giving me any identifying information at that point. Then they shut down that department and I had to wait until they opened the records a couple years later to get my Birth Reg which had my Mother's name and birthplace. This of course was not a lot of help because it just said "england".

I knew that my mother was born in england from the non-identifying information that I recieved years before. I made the assumption that she had returned to England because that's where she was from, so I asked my worker if she was now in England and he at least told me that she was. Also he told me that she may be an Accountant.

Also in my non-ident info was that her father was in the Military, I do not know what branch at all. I don't know how reliable the non-ident info is.. but it could be correct?

I'm always nervous to put this information "out there" on the internet, but I think I have to try to somehow find her.

Do you have any ideas?
Sue, thanks for your help again.

Sue :)

Hi Sue,
Oh my, that's incredible. How did you find that info? I have a hard time searching UK info from here in Canada. I think her sister might have been living in the Birmingham area around 4 - 5 years ago. This doesn't mean that she is living in that area, but maybe? I was almost able to make contact with her a few years ago, but the government agency that handles reunions was shut down because new legislation was introduced to unseal the records here in Canada. This ended up being worse because now because I have less information and no help to find her.

Thanks, Sue

I know this may be a longshot. I have no idea what country she was born. I have very limited info, and my birth reg says only "england". I have her name and her approximate year of birth based on the age that she was when I was born. This means she is around 58 years old now. I live in Canada, and she was living here when I was born (in the 70's). If you know of anyone matching that name and year of birth please let me know. I would really like to know some family history. Please know that I do not want to disrupt anyone's life. I just simply want to know where I came from. Thanks for your help :)

If Shropshire and Cheshire are close, I was wondering if an Arthur Peel born 1881 in New Ferry, Cheshire rings a bell.
He married (I think) a woman with the surname Bury.
He had two daughters that I know of Joyce M. and Janet born in 1912. It is Janet I am interested in, as she died on the way to Bermuda on the lady Hawkins. If any of this sounds familiar, please contact me.
Thanks,
Jessie Moniz
Bermuda

Thomas Peel, Esq of Peel Fold, Lancashire, England, born 24 Oct 1768, had a son Thomas who would have been born around 1800. Thomas 11768 was the grandson of Robert "Parsley". Is he possibly your connection. I do not have a birth date or spouse for him.
Roberts.Peel, you mention the hadnwritten notes of Jonathan. Can I ask what he was trying to correct? I have a typed copy of his book. Horace (Horace@peele.info)
Dear Sheila: I know this reply is to an extremely old post, but I'm interested in knowing whether or not you discovered the Thomas Peel from Lancashire you were looking for. My great grandfather was Thomas Peel, born 1824 in Bow, City of London. His father was Thomas Peel, probably born about 1800 in Lancashire or Yorkshire, whose father would have been born in the period you are describing. I am convinced that our Peel family is from an earlier forebear of the first Robert ("Parsley") Peel and probably from the Thomas Peel of Clough who is among the Peel's of Lancashire. In the Jonathon Peel's handwritten corrections to his history of the Peel family, he believed that Thomas Peel of Clough was the seventh in a line of Thomas Peel's. I do hope you are still connected. With kind regards, Robert S. Peel

Hi Elfreda,
Thanks for all the info. I've done some googling and I've seen the photo of Dolly, and of the statue. The statue looks amazing, I'd love to see it in person some time. I still can't believe it's there! Also it's very interesting to read the accounts of her history.

Dolly has a lot of descendents here in America, I have a lot of cousins over here too. We always did wonder if we had any relations over in England and I'm happy to discover that we do. And in Bermuda too.....that must be a great place to live. I live in Minnesota, where it gets very cold and snowy in the winter.

Cheers!
Cathy

Simple Yes. I have a family tree done by a 1st cousin, somewhere in my bedroom. Definitely know I am a direct descendent of Dolly Peel, the name Dorthy is still used in my family(Dorothy frederick Swann(hitchman). She was also a published poetess.
My grandmother's mother knew Dolly very well according to my sister. I think Dolly is 5 greats ago for me(sorry have not counted them).
My grandmother was a Lea,i think Waugh,Rickerby and Heslop are in my background.Wonder how long the family has been in the area? and how many cousin's I have there.
My sister and I are the only members in our part of the family who do not have blue eyes!

Geordie is the dialect from the NE of England and resembles norse languages in many ways.We probably have alot of Viking ancestry,No blondes in my family but LOTS of blue eyes. My only resmblence to Dolly is the shape of the eye area otherwise my dad's mother family(I have probably
1-2,000 cousins in Bermuda).Would not date Bermudian men, anyone I mentioned to my Dad seem to be a cousin!
Challenges in living in a small secluded part of the world.

Found on the internet

Saturday, August 7, 2010
Pressgangs and Poetry
As often happens when going in search of women whose achievements have been obscured by history, the route can be an interesting and serendipitous journey in itself. After reviewing “A Merciless Place” in my previous post, I was intrigued to find out more about any individuals – men or women - who had endured and survived the late 18th and early 19th century tragedies and horrors of West Africa as so vividly described in that book. One diversion led me to the Royal Naval doctor in Sierra Leone, Dr Thomas Masterman Winterbottom, an early researcher into sleeping sickness and later founder of the South Shields Maritime College (now South Tyneside College), among his numerous achievements. Clearly he survived “the white man's grave” as he lived to the ripe old age of 93.

But in the process, I stumbled upon a legendary woman whom I really ought to have known more about, given my own family links to Dr Winterbottom's home town of Arbeia (South Shields) but who was perhaps considered persona non grata by earlier generations of town councillors and has only in recent years come into her own right, being commemorated in a statue by Billy Gofton raised in 1987 on the Lawe Top overlooking what would have been her old haunts.
Dorothy (Dolly) Peel (1782-1857) has become part of Tyneside folklore and as inevitably happens in such instances, reports of her activities must be taken with the proverbial pinch of salt. The following extracts from The Borough of South Shields, published 1903 by George B. Hodgson, are the main source of information about her.
"... Dolly Peel, a fishwife, who in the days before free trade did not scruple to eke out a livelihood by hoodwinking the excise officers, and smuggling ashore brandy, tobacco, cigars, lace, scents— in fact, anything dutiable. She did quite an extensive trade in the contraband way, and would take - and execute - orders for any excisable article that might be required. She was a strong, muscular woman, and absolutely fearless, as the pressgang more than once discovered. A gang was one day in hot pursuit of her husband, who managed to reach home — an upper flat in Shadwell Street. Dolly, singlehandly kept the pressgang at bay until her husband got out of the window on to the roof. He was captured at last and sent on board a man-o'-war, where Dolly accompanied him. When he was in action Dolly was with him and rendered service in the cockpit*. She had a nerve of iron. Had she been an educated woman she might have made a reputation as a poetess. As it was, she was famous for her ability to rhyme extempore on any subject. She composed an address in poetry congratulating Mr. Robert Ingham (with whom she was a great favourite) on his return as the first M.P. for South Shields; also a song on the loss of the barque Dove of Sunderland, laden with Russian tallow, which came ashore on the Herd Sand on November 20, 1836. It was a very hard winter for the 'Townenders,' as the inhabitants living at the 'low end' of the town were called by Shields folk, and Dolly made it appear that the wreck of the 'Russian tallowship' as it was called, was a special dispensation of Providence to help them." [* In this definition, cockpit means the compartment below waterline in old warships where the wounded were taken and treated during a battle.]
and

"What is believed to have been the last severe 'press' in South Shields was made at the outbreak of the war with America in June 1812, when the most stringent methods were adopted to secure men. For instance, it was a regular practice, when the Tyne collier fleets made Flamborough Head, for the convoy to bring the ships up and board every vessel. It was during this press that the famous encounter took place in Military Road, South Shields, between the press-gang, locally known as 'Hunter's Gang' from the commander of the shore party, and one Ralph Peel, the husband of the still more famous Dolly Peel, who is said to have followed her husband aboard on one occasion when he was pressed, and served with him in the Navy. On this occasion the shore gang was reinforced by a detachment from the receiving ship in Peggy's Hole. A great crowd collected, and a serious disturbance ensued, during which it was alleged that a pistol was fired, the bullet passing through the lapel of an officer's coat. On another evening, a boat's crew from the receiving ship landed at the Coble Landing in Pilot Street, and, each armed with a cutlass, made a clean sweep of all the young and middle-aged men, wearing the bluejacket and trousers of the seaman, found in the Low Street, carrying them all aboard. At this time, when the whole Mercantile Marine and Transport service of Great Britain only employed 120,000 men, it was estimated that at least 40,000 British seamen were manning American vessels in order to avoid impressment."
Dolly's husband is called Ralph Peel in this account but, according to both the 1841 and 1851 Census Returns, he was a Mariner named Cuthbart, born in 1781, and the couple lived at addresses that certainly sound apt for smugglers – Ropery Stairs and Lookham Stairs respectively – neither of which exist in modern South Shields. Cuthbart died in 1856 and Dolly a year later.

As to the suggestion that Dolly nicked the cargo of Dove, the Marine Intelligence column of The Newcastle Courant, 25 November 1836 doesn't mention it – or maybe the lesser part not recovered was Dolly's doings.
"The Dove, Adamson, of Sunderland from St Petersburg with hemp and tallow bound to London sprung a leak at sea and endeavouring to get into this port on Sunday last, got upon the Herd Sand at the entrance to Shields Harbour. The crew, with a great part of the cargo, is saved."
Another Courant report from June 1849, lists Dolly attending court as the aggrieved party in an assault by one Elizabeth Morton, “an old offender”, in which Dolly was awarded the princely sum of five shillings plus costs. Two fighting fishwives – one of whom was nortorious for taking on the pressgangers - was probably something to steer well clear of.

Why she was a “great favourite” of the local MP isn't detailed and a little puzzling, even if politicians in those days could be less guarded about their friendships than modern ones.
Maybe she supplied him with favours in the way of cheap baccy and booze as, judging from her gummy photograph from the Newcastle Libraries collection, her attractions were unlikely to be of the more salacious variety!
If anyone reading this knows whether Dolly's poetry still exists and/or where it may be found, please contact me.

Posted by Marina Maxwell at 3:18 PM 0 comments Links to this post Labels: Dolly Peel, Dr Thomas Masterman Winterbottom, pressgangs, South Shields
Sunday, June 20, 2010

Those were the 2 that stuck in my mind. Have u tried the internet, place dolly peel and south shields in the search engine and you should come up with more info on her re press gangs and serving during the Napoleonic war(around 1805)also a photo of the statue
Her husband and son both got press ganged and she joined her husband;she was a natural nurse and helped in surgery etc and worked as a powder monkey.Do not know what she did with her daughter who may have been married by then( she had, I believe a set of twins, aboy and a girl, would have to get the family tree out to see the daughter's name( I am descended from this side of the family) She could read and write and wrote poetry and was a raconteur( hope I spelt it right.)She was a firm friend of the MP for South Shields and lived to be fairly old (70+).VERY lively character and I could see her in my aunt Jenny!
You have a LOT of cousins in South Shields,I only met a fraction of them.
My sister knows more as she knew our grandmother better( she got to UK 5-6 years before me). That area of the UK is beautiful but COLD,remember I was raised in Bermuda!Could not wait to get home to the warmth, never had summer whilst I was there.U need to go and see Hadrians wall as well, and there is a roman fort in Shields that they discovered many years ago, literally in my mother's backyard!
my phone no. is 441-292-1460 if u want to call me.I am handicapped now and do not work much but am about to start a new career at age 60!teaching!In the blood, have taught unofficial things like horseback riding and dog obedience in clubs I belong to,but never been trained to teach children-dyslexic children, should be interesting, think both my sister and I are dyslexic(my nephew is definitley dyslexic). At least I know where they are coming from, never had a problem reading but SPELLING agh!!!What a nightmare.Skipped a year at school and took me 4 years to catch up,thank God for Maths
Many of my mother's family are teachers, nurses, sea captains, smugglers, emphasis on smugglers!etc.
My Dad's ancestors were more upper class, but lost their land supporting the wrong king! Both sides of the family r interesting!
Cheers cousin ( I have a LOT of cousins in the USA as well and get to Buffalo area every couple of years, they are from my Dad's side of the family)
Your bermudian cousin(bet u never thought u would have a cousin in Bermuda!)
cheers
Elf

Just realized you had left this second message too. She sounds like quite the character. Is Geordie a dialect of that region? My great grandmother (Olena Manson was her maiden name) came to America from South Shields in the 1890s. She died well before I was born, but no doubt she spoke the same way. I will need to read up on this area and familiarize myself with it a bit.

This must make us very distant cousins! I'm American, and have lived in the USA all my life. Dolly's name was on the family tree, but I had no idea she was famous. If her colorful history was known by my grandmother or great grandmother, they never shared that with the rest of the family. I've never been to South Shields, I passed thru Newcastle once so I was close. I would love to visit the area sometime, see the pub and the statue and whatnot. I'm very excited to have made this discovery! I'd love to hear any tales about Dolly that you may know.

Most of the stories are bit raunchy. Dolly was a tall women and they wore long full skirts in those days. A man was running to escape the pressgang chasing him. He came round the corner and Dolly lifted up her skirts and hid him under her skirts and then she misdirected the pressgang. Once they went off in the directions she had given them, she then sent the man off in the opposite direction.
She was also known to distract the pressgang men by lifting her skirts and saying you want something to shoot at, shoot at that. Those are the two my auntJenny used to tell me. She and her sister Freda were both teachers at Baring Street School. They spoke the Queens english at school but lapsed into geordie once outside of school. By the time I left the northeast I was fluent in Geordie but in the 35+ years I have been away from it I no longer speak it, I still understand it and when people tell me it isn't another language I say " me and my marra went tappylappy dun the lonnen on our cuddies".They admit to not understanding a word I said!!!Good for a giggle. My sister may have more stories as she spent a lot of time with our grandmother(my sister is 5 years older then me and thus arrived in the UK5-6 years before me) .Unfortunately my grandmother died about 9-8months after I arrived in the UK for further education. Hope this is helpful
My mother and family were swanns and Lawe Toppers(area in Shields on the river front)

Have not quite figured out how greats it is for me,suspect 5. My mother was from South Shields and My sister and I although raised in Bermuda spent much of our time in South Shields during our training. My sister remained in Uk and I returned to my parents in Bermuda(my father's souvenirs from the war was, one wife and one daughter),I was born in Bermuda. Father's family on his mother side has been here since 1830, his fathers side sinc3 1870's,all from the UK originally.
I still have 2 first cousins in South shields and their children, but 7 other 1st cousins scattered around the UK.
My sister and I were the only 2 grandchildren who did not have blue eyes; and red hair is also common; My mother,my aunt Jenny and my sister and several 2nd cousins). My sister has a portrait of Dolly somewhere in her house.Think it is a print of the one that hangs in South Shields library. Never went to the pub, was only a student and no one in my mothers family in Shields had a car. My aunt Jenny and Aunt Freda use to tell me some tales about Dolly Peeland ancestors.
Her descendents in my mothers line still smuggled and kept hammers to smash the bottles of brandy should the excise men came alooking. Have you seen the statute on the river front.I had not realised til then that she was a Shields heroine

I just discovered that Dolly (Dorothy Appleby) Peel was my great, great, great, great grandmother. Found some interesting items googling on her name. There's a pub named for her in South Shields! Looking forward to learning more about her.
