Hi again, Joyce. I'm most interested in the records you have for Alexander Peers. He and Mary Bolding are my 5th great-grandparents, through their son Ephraim and his wife, Patience Horton. Please contact me at pminch@sbcglobal.net. Thanks.

Hi, Joyce. Alexander Peers and Mary Bolding were my gggg-grandparents, and I've accumulated quite a bit of information about them which I'm always willing to share. I don't know for sure who Alexander's parents were but do have some info that Alexander was the son of a Richard Peers, born circa 1710, who married Sarah Williams and was a merchant in Helsby, Cheshire, England. Richard and
Sarah allegedly had seven sons and seven daughters, of which Alexander was the third-born. (We know from Nova Scotia records that Alexander had a brother Samuel, probably a brother Henry and perhaps also a brother Joseph.) My understanding is Alexander was born in either 1736 or 1745, emigrated around age 20 and married Mary Bolding at Long Island City, Queens Co., NY, in 1765. From his Dundas Commission testimony, we know he bought out the lease of his brother Samuel around 1772 to 123 acres of farmland at Phillip's Upper Mills (also called Phillipse's Upper Patent), near the mouth of the Croton River in then Dutchess Co., NY. Alexander improved the property and in November 1786 valued the improvements at 100 British pounds. Alexander and his family were driven from this home early in the war because of his support of the British, i.e., joining Delancey's Cowboys, also known as the Westchester Refugees. The family then lived for some years in a log hut community of Loyalists' families called Morrisinia or Morrisina, located behind the British lines at the southern tip of Westchester Co., NY, not far from Long Island Sound. This property consisted of seven acres and a log home, which Alexander purchased from another Loyalist. Toward the end of the war the Americans and French burned this community, and Alexander lost that property also. He and his family withdrew over Kings Bridge onto Manhattan Island, where a month or so later they were picked up by British sailing ships in June 1783 and taken to Fort Cumberland in Nova Scotia. After spending several years in the area of Fort Cumberland, Alexander and his four sons were finally granted land by the British government in the Remsheg Grant, their lands being located at Wallace Bay in Cumberland Co., and there they forged new lives.

Re: PEERS!

Many families of Dutch ancestry fought for the british. Just as the majority of the people fighting AGAINST the Crown were of English Ancestry, people fought for what they believe in, not for their ancestral "group".

Taxes were one relatively MINOR issue. It was not that they objected to taxes per se, they did not. What they objected to were taxes, and a host of other laws, imposed without any representation in Parliament. The American colonists comprised almost 15% of the overall population of "Great Britain" (and the colonies WERE considered a part of Great Britain), but they had absolutely no voting representation in Parliament.

Repeatedly, Parliament attempted to impose the costs of the war against France on the colonies (which had virtually nothing to do with the overall war). They wanted the colonists to pay the full costs of keeping massive numbers of troops in North America, when the colonists didn't see any reason for them to even be there.

But, it was the attempts to impose a total lack of freedom of speech and assembly that finally brought the pot to the boiling point.

As to the so called ancestry of Alexander Peers, I have read everything that your cousin has put out and it is 100% speculation. There is absolutely no proof at all. He takes two surnames that are can be pronounced in a similar fashion, and links two different families together.

There was NO uniformity in the Peers surname. Alexanders brothers spelled the name PIERS and PEARS, which indicates that it could very well be a Dutch name as well as an English one (or possibly French).

It seems that it was pronounced by virtually everyone as "Pears", which is not in any manner related to "Pierce".

Instead of playing "my research is superior to everyone else's", how about providing some actual evidence?
It is so easy to make a claim, but sadly, most claims in genealogy are simply not backed up by fact.

Until there is evidence, that I can go check the records on, that parents of Alexander Peers have been clearly identified, I would have to say that he was born in approximately 1745, to parents that are unknown. That tentative parents have been identified, but not proven.

Until the "evidence" is placed out there, so that anyone can go check the records and the research, it simply can not be shown who the parents of either Alexander, or of his wife, were.

Hi Joan,
Did you have any info on the below regarding John Peers?
The info I have uncovered so far is fairly sparse.
They are listed as living in Queen St, Gorton Manchester in 1855, recorded on the birth certificate of their daughter Mary Hannah Woollam Peers. (I dont know if there is any significance that Mary Hannah retained the surname of her mothers family, Woollam!)
Mary Hannah Woollam Peers married Henry maddocks in 1874 and John Peers is listed as if still alive. His profession was Joiner & Cabinet Maker. So far I have been unable to trace him on any Census. When Mary Hannah was 6 in the 1861 Census she is staying with her Grandparents (Woollams) in Prees, Wem Shropshire. I cannot find Esther or John in the 1861 Census. I have found Esther in 1881 living with her cousins the Glassey family (Prees) The transcript has errors and lists her as wife & Son so that was no help¬ In 1891 she is still with the Glassey's but is now listed as Cousin and widowed. Her death certificate also lists her as the widow of John Piers (mispelt) Interestingly I cannot find any trace of any other children.
Any info you may have would be gratly appreciated.
Kind regards
Linda

I think from your post re Peers of Birmingham that you must be related to my great grandparents John and Selina Peers of Latimer Street South. Their youngest son Ernest was my grandfather, and I am also in touch with some of the descendants of Alfred Peers and Clara Lloyd. I have done some research into the ancestry of John and Selina, but don't know much about the descendants of their other children. If you are interested in exchanging information you can contact me at ckpeers1607@O2.c.uk.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,

Chris Peers.

PEERS family of Essex..Bocking?

In the Will of Jane Amphillis Sibley nee Berthon ( 1832 ) she makes reference to the Will of an Aunt Jane Pritchard.

In trying to locate this Will, I got the Will of a Jane Pritchard 1827 of Bocking, Essex, which was not the one I was looking for but had a few surprises.

In the Will Jane Pritchard nee PEERS mentions

Her Brothers William and John Peers.
Her Sister Sarah Peers.
Her Cousins Sarah, Mary and Frances TWEED... daughters of Thomas Little TWEED .

She also mentions a John Gilson? and his 2 daughters Alice and Caroline Gilson.
Also a William and Mary Gilson.

There are no clues via the IGI, best I can think is that this Jane is a sibling of Elizabeth Mary Tweed, also I believe of Bocking, Essex, who Married Robert Tweed in 1783, Thomas Little Tweeds brother.

If any one knows more on the Pers family it would be appreciated.

- Clif ( London )
Here's a nice coincidence...My son's ex girlfriend was researching her tree, recently, and found that she was related to me(an ex Birmingham Peers) through a great uncle (Amos family, Oswestry, via Birmingham), who was an engraver married to Kezia whose name I recognised as one of the Birmingham Peers.I'll check it out, though looking at the date, perhaps you've found it.I seem to remember the name was difficult to read or was poss.incorrectly transcribed.

Do you have a family named Peers/Pearce or other variation of this surname in your family. I have been searching for the whereabouts of my grandmother Sarah Pearce n the 1891 Census without any luck.

I then did an address search for the address she gave when she married my grandfather James Ince. She was living at 54 Seddon Street, Bolton and the family there were named Peers, a John, wife Charlotte and daughter Mary. My grandmother had a brother John. Can anyone please give me any information on this family?

It would help others who might be related, or who might just want to help you, if you could give some dates and locations. Maybe list the years of birth and death for the two William H. Peers along with the location of their birth and death. I might also help to give the maiden names of the wife of each man.

For example: Orrin Simeon Peers, born 25 Aug 1875 in Canada, died 24 July 1963 in Washington state, USA married Alice Magnie Wichmann before 1907, probably in Denver, Colorado. She was born 12 Jun 1884 in Nebraska and died in Aug 1976 at Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. They had one son, Orrin W. Peers, b. 1907, d. 1981.

Hi Joan,
The info I have uncovered so far is fairly sparse.
Linda
Hi, having all sorts of headaches with the Peers clan!!
My grandfather, who everyone knew as Samuel, was registered in both birth and death records (dates confirmed 1909 to 1971) as CECIL Samuel!! (my dad was Cecil William!!)
Also I know that he was born in Bebington, but as he was born after 1901, I'm unsure of which Peers family was his. I think it must be the one without the Samuel age 12 in 1901 census, but need to check with remaining sibling who is proving hard to track down.
Hoping to discover more about the Peers family and/or the Humphreys also from Bebington who were my grandmothers family.
Kind regards Confused Carole

I am looking for information on John Kneen Peers who married Charlotte Amelia Massey when they were 21 and 19 respectively in 1888 - . Charlotte went on to marry Alfred Benjamin Cooper.

All information is needed, especially as to what became of the marriage between John and Charlotte, as i cannot find any census information on them as to his death or her marriage to ALfred.

C Norman
