The other place I would look is Manitoba in for the "Red River" area; there is a large Metis/Indian lineage that way as well and everything in between!
Sorry, don't know anything about any in the American Revolution, but that would be interesting to find out!
Good luck with your endeavors.
That Saskatchewan figures prominently in the Pelletier lineage was new to me. I have focused on Quebec and Massachusetts. You are right about the incredibly large families making it difficult.

I have heard that my father's grandmother Alexandrine Michaud Pelletier was one who had Native American in her line. I had not known that others had as well.

I am also interested in knowing if anyone in the line from Guillaume Pelletier to Edward Pelletier had fought in the American Revolutionary war on the side of the colonists?

Karen:
My grandfather, Xavier Pelletier of Montreal, Canada often used Pelky as his last name. I don't know if that helps you or not. He was born in the middle 1800's. Married Florence Beaupre (Daughter of Alexander (I believe) Beaupre who was half Native American) of Montreal, Canada. Alexander Beaupre died in early 1950's in New York (I believe) at age 102. Xavier was a lumberjack, Florence a cook for lumberjacks. They migrated all around the Northeastern US, finally settling in Watervliet, NY in the early 1900's.
I am hoping to find members of Florence Beaupre's family. I have little knowledge of them. Would also like to discover the name of the Tribe from which Alexander Beaupre's mother came. The Reservation was somewhere near Montreal, I've been told.
Perhaps we are somehow related since your relative used the Pelky name?
June

I don't have any specific information about your ancestor, but Pelkey and Pelky are Americanized variations for Pelletier... Many Pelletier immigrants to the U.S. were illiterate and could not spell their name... so the U.S. border officials, who couldn't speak French, wrote the French names phonetically... I once met an illiterate French-Canadian from my grandfather's home town in the Gaspe region of Quebec who pronounced the "t" in Pelletier as a "k" and it became "Pelkeeay"... if you check out my Pelletier Genealogy web-site at: http://pelletier-genealogy.org, and do a search for Pelky and/or Pelkey, you will find quite a few of them whose parents are Pelletier or whose name changed or was changed to Pelkey or Pelky...

George

I seem to have the same problem. My great-grandfather was born Hector Pelletier in Canada, but when he came to the States in mid-1800's, and due to the fact that he had a lisp when he spoke, it was heard as Lector Pelky. He went to R.I. and enlisted in the military and his military discharge papers have him as Lector Pelky. Yet my great-grandmother's papers have her as Pelletier. Hope this is of some help and maybe not. Happy holidays.

Yes, Pelkey is definetly related to Pelletier. My father was Chester Bernard Pelkey, but the last name was originally spelled at Pelletier. His family is from Canada and they are French Canadian. His mother was Ester Robair, also French and migrated to New York from Canada. Lived in Ausable Forks, NY. Family in Moores, NY.

Greetings,
I'm fairly confident that we're talking about the same person because McGrath and McGraw are used interchangeably.
I don't have this particular McGrath-McGraw in my own database - I just looked him up for you.
If you go to the following website and purchase coupons you can also take a look for yourself.

www.bms.org

As I understand it, when the Centre Genealogique does the indexing into its own system, it frequently uses a standardized spelling for the surnames - and it certainly corrects mispellings in foreign (that is, U.S.) documents. Perhaps this is why there's a discrepancy between their spelling and yours.

Evelyn in Montreal

Evelyn,

Thank you for responding. Do you happen to have the marriage cert? I am wondering if Benjamin could have been McGraw versus McGrath. My documentation is referencing McGraw so I am not sure if I am looking at the same individuals.

I have Phoebe's DOB as 7/16/1893 (Ashland) and DOD as 1/2/1929. Does this match up with your Phoebe? Ben (McGraw) I have being born 7/2/1884, Tracadie, NB, DOD 2/24/1929. I have Phoebe's parents on the death cert as Sopha Pelkey (Sophie Pelletier) and Joseph Terr (Therriault). Ben's death cert does not have parents names. Thanks for any assistance.

Karen
Phoebe Theriault -- ME, NH

Hi,

My grandmother, Mabel McGraw, was born in Theridan ME, May 14, 1914. I haven't found her birth certificate yet. This was taken off of her death cert. Her father was Benjamin McGraw and her mother is listed as Phoebe Theriault.

Both Phoebe and Benjamin died in NH and I was able to retrieve their death certificates. Phoebe (Theriault) McGraw was born in Ashland ME, 7/16/1893. Her father is listed as Joseph Terr (believe it's suppose to be Theriault) and her mother is listed as Sopha Pelkey. Birthplace of both is listed as Fort Kent, ME.

Benjamin I have as being born in Tracadie NB (?), 7/2/1881. I don't have any info on his parents.

I have been able to locate the family on the following census.

1910 Census, Ashland, Aroostock, ME
Ben McGraw, 30
Phebe McGraw, 20
Joseph McGraw, 6 mo

1920 Census, Eagle Lake Town, Aroostock, ME
St Dennis Street (off Main?)
Ben McGras, 36
Phebe McGras, 26
Joseph McGras, 9 (born @ 1910)
Adella McGras, 7 (actually Odella) (born @ 1913)
Mabelle McGras, 5 (Mabel)
Evel…. McGras, 3 (Evaline) (born @ 1917)

I am hoping someone can point me in the direction of where to look for a birth certificate, a phone number for town record, etc. for any of the above. I haven't found any record of Sophia Pelkey on a census. Same for Phoebe Theriault.

Not sure if this provides the information you are looking for.

Thank you.
Karen

Curious: I have a Sophie Pelletier married to a Joseph Theriault at St-Luce Church in Frenchville, Maine.... however, that was on 3 Jan 1889...

And yes, Pelkey as well as Pelky are Americanized versions of Pelletier... as a matter of fact, I knew an old uneducated French Canadian who new my grandfather and who pronounced Pelletier, in French, with a "k", as "Pelkier"... so it's esay to see how an English speaking American immigration officer asking an uneducated French Canadian for his name and getting "Pelkier" as a response would write down Pelky or Pelkey in the records...

Re: Pelletier Indian ancesters?

the majority of native Pelletier's are in Saskatchewan I would say - if you check through the Saskatchewan Archives you'll find a lot of information. I know a lot from the Melville, Yorkton, Fort Qu'Appelle, Regina area's of Saskatchewan. Unfortunately a lot of the records are hard to figure out as they are a bit mixed up. The other place I would check is the Metis scripts on the gov't of canada site - (sorry it's been a while since I've been on it, so I don't know the link off hand) but there you should be able to go through the scripts and find a lot of Pelletiers. Gabriel Dumont Institute as well as, and First Nations University of Canada (both located in Saskatchewan)
There are 2 sections - well 3 here - French, Metis, and Full Native - there are several variations on the name as well.

My grandmother was a Pelletier and we have it traced back quite a ways - though our side lineages are a bit harder as there are really large families, on each side )a lot with 10+kids -

Is there someone you are looking for in particular?
Re: French Canadian Artist by Pelletier

An art dealer in Marseilles recently told me that artists used pseudonyms to market different types of work. This 19/20 century artist apparently painted French rural scenes under the name of Pelletier and venetian scenes under the name of Antoine Bouvard. I have been similarly attracted to paintings under each name and the letters of the signature appear to be similar too.

I have information on the NC Pelletier Line, as well as the Weeks line . Both lines are traced back to their origin in America. The Weeks line is traced back to approx 1525

I'm not sure about the Pelletier connection to a town named Pelletier...someone in that area could better answer that question. How are you related to the Pelletiers?

Liz

Michel Andrian Pelletier, victim at WTC on 9/11

With the 10th anniversary coming up, I've taken to trying (again) to find Michel Andrian Pelletier's family. I know his father's name is Marcel and his mother Lilian. But no further back.
Does anyone have him in their Pelletier genealogy?
He died on 9/11/01, at the World Trade Center. He was born 30 of January, 1965 at Quebec.
From what I could make out, he has a brother Dan, and possibly two sisters, Christine and Susan. And of course his wife and two children.

Any help would be appreciated .
Thanks all!
