Re: Pendlebury ; Wigan - Thomas and Margaret (Maggie) Ellen

Here is another Pendlebury from Wigan:

Thomas Pendlebury married Margaret E Merton at Wigan, Lancashire in Oct/Nov/Dec 1923.

I believe the wife to be Maggie Ellen Merton who is listed as a 9-year old on the census of 2nd April 1911, living with her family at 23 Back Water Street, Wigan. Her parents were James and Alice Merton and her siblings were Sarah Alice (13 years old in 1911), James (11), Jack (6) and Minnie (4).

I believe that Thomas and Maggie Ellen moved to the USA. I am told he became a sheriff. Maybe this is them listed in the Cedar Grove Cemetery, Camden, New Jersey but it is not confirmed (Maggie E, 1901-1972 and Thomas 1897-1978 and possibly a daughter called Margaret? 1922-1999):

http://files.usgwarchives.net/nj/camden/cemeteries/cedargrov...

I am in touch with some of the surviving nephews/nieces of Maggie Ellen Merton through the line of her elder brother James, who settled and married on the island of Jersey (Channel Islands), so if you are a descendant of Maggie Ellen and Thomas, please try contacting me and I will pass on any message to the Mertons. I am presuming that this is the same Maggie Ellen Merton who is listed in the Family Tree of JCassidy2 and who died at Lindenwold, Camden County, New Jersey in 1972. Unfortunately, as I no longer have a paid subscription to ancestry, I am unable to contact JCassidy2 directly, nor can I view the Cassidy family tree, but the link is here (choose the Cassidy Family Tree):

http://community.ancestry.com/profile.aspx?mba=0196BF56-0001...

Any information on the other Merton siblings would also be welcome.

Hi Kerri,
We have made an advance where Charlotte is concerned. She certainly was Pendlebury before marriage. She is the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth [nee townsend]born April,1812, at Lying in hospital,Endell St,Holborn,London. This Thomas and Elizabeth go back to Manchester,Thomas was a Soldier.Charlotte Pendlebury marries John Pendlebury, this is much supported by her maiden name appearing on the birth certificates of her children, her third child Elizabeth is actually born in Smithy Lane, that is where you find Charlottes mother Elizabeth in the 1841 census, born London,so it all backs up with evidence...it is all intriquing.John is still the one l have no idea of who he is yet...l guess we all have ideas but no conclusive evidence like we do for Charlotte..please feel free to contact me anytime,Pauline.

Thanks for that info, Pauline, great that you have Charlotte's parents names and even the hospital, (perhaps unusual to have a baby in hosp in those days?) I'm enjoying my research immensely, and it's great to have contact with "extended family" like yourself. til next time, Cheers, Kerri

Hi all, I realise it has been a couple or more years since the last post, but I wonder if anyone has made progress on Charlotte (Pendlebury's) maiden name? Boothy did ring a bell somewhere, but not sure if it relates to her or not, some seem certain it was also Pendlebury before her marriage to John. I'm their great great great grandaughter, my maiden name was Munks. (thru Charles Munks marrying Elizabeth Pendlebury). Although me research is in its early stages, if I can help anyone, I'm happy to.

Kerri Bennett (Munks)

Pendlebury's from Bolton to Toronto

My great-grandfather was John Pendlebury of Bolton b. 1888. He came to Toronto in 1911 with his mother Elizabeth Pendlbury(Marsh) b. 1861 and his sister Rosetta Pendlebury b. 1893. Later on his brother Edward Marsh Pendlebury joined them in Toronto. There father, John Pendlebury b. 1860 had already died back in Bolton England.

I recently had a conversation with my aunt who told me that a picture existed of the family back in England and they had brought it to Cananda with them. Unfortunately when my grandfather, Edward Marsh Pendlebury (nephew of the first EMP I mentioned) died a sibling of Edward's took the picture and no one has seen it again, and infact my aunt fears that it was lost.

If there are any Pendlebury's of Toronto or even Bolton who think these names are familiar I would really appreciate any information that they might have about this.

Rachel Z.
Hi. I'm trying to trace the Pendlebury side of my family. My great great grandmother was Elizabeth Pendlebury b1846. She married Robert Wetherall. Her father was John Pendlebury b1826. He married Sarah Cooke. His father was also John Pendlebury b1792. He married Alice Hampson. All were born and lived in Bolton. I was wondering if anyone recognises any of the names or has any further information. Thanks Gemma

I am a Pendlebury. My great-grandfather, John Pendlebury(b.1888) came to Toronto, Canada in 1911 with his sister Rosetta(b.1893) and mother Eliza Anne(Marsh, b.1861). They came from Bolton, Lancashire or more specifically Halliwell, Bolton.

From what I can find on Ancestry I see that his father was also John Pendlebury (b.1861), and his father was William Pendlebury(b.1834 of Haliwell, Bolton) and his wife was Mary Parkinson(b.1837 of Haliwell, Bolton. Williams father was a Gerrard(Gerrald in one cesus) Pendlebury(b.1810? of Heaton, Bolton) and his wife was Jane. Gerrard's father from what I can see was a Henry Pendlbury(b.1779 of Over Hulton).

My great grandmothers name was Anna Pendlebury. I know she was from Bolton England. I don't know which Bolton. Anna had 5 siblings 2 sisters and 3 brothers, the brothers were Jack and Dick who stayed in England and Arthur who went to South America. The sisters moved to the U.S. where Anna married John Harrison. Anna and John Harrison had one daughter (Mrs Charlie Hurd) and two sons Arthur and John Charles (my grandfather). The sisters lived in New York and Anna and John lived in Chicago. Can anyone help me find more information on this family?? Thank you.

pendleburys, manchester/leigh

My grandfather was John Pendlebury born c1861 in Manchester. he Married Emma Peters also from Manchester but they were married in Preston c1880. The Peters family was living in Preston, but John Pendlebury was only lodging in the town.
They had children, Tom, Fred, Jim, Alice,Nellie, Agnes and Winifred then fostered a child Elizabeth McGann who took the name Pendlebury - she was my mother. Nellie emigrated to Canada after marrying a man called Banks. Fred also emigrated to Canada, don't know who went first or when. Don't know which province. Any information much appreciated. Think John's father was called James.Emmas father was John who was a brewer. John Pendlbury also became a brewer though he started his working life as a builders labourer. Emma Peters had a younger sister Sarah, both were weavers. There was a suicide in the family but it is not clear weather it was Emmas mother, or John's mother. In any event the poor lady drowned in the canal ( manchester area) after going to church. This story has yet to be verified.

Hello Brad,

I got a Mailer-Demon reply from the other email I sent through Ancestry.com. Don't know how that happened, but the information I was trying to send you was that I don't have much beyond Isaac, except that I did find in the New York, 1820-1850 Passenger and Immigration Lists that the family, Thomas, age 34; Ann, age 32; Isaac, age 6; John, age 2 and Edward, age 1 arrived in New York from Liverpool June 1, 1844 on the ship St. George. The name was spelled *Pindleberry*. In the 1850 census of New York, I found the family with the name spelled *Pentelby* with 3 new siblings for Isaac. I do have photo's of the cemetery and an old marker for Isaac's grave, family photo's, etc. and Isaac's Civil War Pension papers if you are interested.

Barb

Thanks for the reply Mark. I have recently found that Isaac with his parents and 2 brothers immigrated from Liverpool to New York in 1844 aboard the ship St. George and found them living in Dutchess County, New York, in the 1850 census with 3 more siblings. Are you connected to this Isaac?

Barb

Hi Brad,

I sent you a message from the other message query regarding what I know about Thomas and Ann. I was so interested about the family story of driving a herd of sheep. We don't have any family stories so I would be interested in any! My great grandmother, Hattie Ann, would have been Gilbert's sister. She was probably 13 years older than him. I'm looking forward to hearing if you have any more family stories.

Barb

In the 1841 census there are only 2 Isaac Pendleburys in Lancs, b:1821 & 1835. The 1835 has the parents James & Nancy and the siblings Thomas, John & Sarah. They are lving in Halliwell. However both are still around in the 61 census so neither can be you Isaac
Regards
Mark Pendlebury
