Thanks for the information. I, too, am having problems finding my 'Margaret Malinda Pendleton McCalip.' She was married to HOUSTON McCALIP the father of Edmond Pendleton's wife Catherine. Some families are just like great detective stories. Let me know when you arecoming to Shelby COunty, I live in Hope, In just 17 mile south of Shelbyville. Linda

Linda - I am sorry to be so tardy in my reply. I was having work done on my house and everything was in a big mess. Margaret Malinda Pendleton was the half-sister of my Great Grandfather, Burgess Henry Pendleton, who was named after his Mother's brother, Burgess Ray. Margaret is the daughter of Rebecca Ray and James Pendleton. James' will (Bullitt Co., KY) lists the 4 children he had with Rebecca. After James' death, Rebecca remarried Perry McAdams (also in Bullit Co., KY) and had 3 more children, including Burgess Henry. She and all the children ended up in Shelby Co., IN (along with some of her brothers) in the 1850 census (all are listed as 'McAdams.'). Perry McAdams had disappeared by that time. I have never been able to find anything about him other than his marriage record to Rebecca. There is a Perry McAdams who was in Louisiana after the Civil War, but I don't know if that is the same person or not. Anyway, Burgess, whose real surname is McAdams (based on the date of James Pendleton's death, Rebecca's marriage to Perry McAdams, and Burgess' birth date) used the surname Pendleton on all legal records we can find for him through out his life, and named a son (my grandfather) after his 2 grandfathers (Joseph Hammans and Perry McAdams.).
Margaret Malinda Pendleton's brother, Edmund Gaines Pendleton, married a Catherine McCalip in Shelby Co., and they are the parents of 'the other' Burgess Pendleton, whose middle initial is 'E.'
Margaret Malinda's sister, Minerva Jane, was married to Alfred Laymon, and the migrated to Cass Co., IN. In the 1880 census, Burgess H. and his 1st wife, Ann Dee West, are listed next door to Margaret and Alfred Laymon and family although the Laymon's are mis-recorded as the Smith family.
The 4th child of Rebecca and James was William Clayton Pendleton. I would like to know where William died if you have that info. I have pictures of William and his wife, Rosa; and also pictures of the Laymon family if you are interested in them. Also, I have some pictures of Burgess Henry.
My sister and I were in Bartholomew Co in 2006 to do some research (Knight family - possibly Gregory and Comer families)and are planning on doing some research in Indiana again this fall and will do some work in Shelby County. Any info about dates and places you can share would be appreciated. Thank you for your message.
Dara Miller
Grand Junction, Colorado

The Brian Pendleton that many are getting confused with and that was born in America is Major Brian's Grandson from one of his sons named Capt. James Pendleton - the line I come from. Major Brian married Eleanor Price in 1619 in England and had most of his children in England before coming to America. One son who died young, Nicholas Pendleton. Joseph Pendleton died without issue, Capt. James Pendleton, Mary Pendleton, his only daughter & Caleb Pendleton. Major Brian had a grandson from Capt. James Pendleton's 2nd wife Hannah Goodenow. Capt. James Pendleton married twice. His first wife was Mary Palmer who died around 1655 and later married Hannah Goodenow in 1656. That Brian Pendleton was born 23 July 1659 in Sudbury,Middlesex, MA. I'm sure Sudbury, Middlesex, MA. was arround by this time but not for Major Brian Pendleton since he came to America sometime in the late 1630's or so. My Pendleton line is: Major Brian Pendleton, Capt. James Pendleton, his son through Hannah Goodenow, Joseph Pendleton, Col. William Pendleton Sr., Benjamin Pendleton Sr, Benjamin Pendleton Jr.,Fredreck Pendleton, Benjamin Franklin Pendleton, Joshua Pendleton, Melvin George Pendleton, Keith Pendleton & Me.
I came from the Virginian Pendletons and Phillip, the first Pendleton to come over to Jamestown area, went back to England for a number of years and then came back to Virginia. So it is not impossible for them to return to England and come back to settle here permanently.

Chris

Article from The Weekly Examiner, San Francisco, Thursday, 5 April 1900

CONVICTED OF MURDER

Pendleton, Who Killed Randle Over a Mining Dispute, Found Guilty

Redding, March 30- After being out one hour the jury in the John Pendleton murder trial returned a verdict of murder in the second degree. This was the second trial. The jury in the first trial stood 7 to 5 for conviction. The present trial occupied four days. Pendleton killed W. L. Randle on Septermber 5th last. The men had trouble over a mining claim near Keswick station. The shooting occurred on the disputed ground. There were no witnesses. Pendleton claimed that he shot in self-defense. He said Randle made a motion to draw a revolver and he shot him with a rifle through his cabin window. No weapon was found on Randle's body.

I am soooo confused now with everyone I found! The book Brian Pendleton and His Descendants 1599-1910 by Everett Hall Pendleton was a BIG help but its confusing because my parents always told me that my grandmother Annie Pendleton Schultz b. June 26, 1908 Brooklyn NY (she is mentioned in the book) had a sister Florence (we always called her Flossie) and a brother Ralph.

Here is my problem- My great-grandfather Joseph Morse Pendleton (b 9-12-1888 in Boston MA) lived across the street from my parents and I was always told he married Pearl Peterson on 10-26-1907 and Annie Pendleton was their only child (he later on married a woman named Lottie but thats all I know about her) but yet Willis Ezra my great great grandfather born in Boston MA married Florence Morse on 7-24-1876 among their 13 kids is Florence Violet b 4-21-1877 and Ralph Edwin b. 12-27-1889 so they couldnt be my grandmother's sister and brother...however this Florence married a man named Joseph Goddard but the man I remember from family stories was Connor...my Uncle Dennis and Uncle Billy from my Aunt Florence was named Connor...see my confusion?

Can anyone help me sort this out please?

As the Pennsylvania birth records don't seem to be online have you tried contacting someone there for the records? I don't know about adoption at that time . Perhaps it wasn't regulated.
I have been looking for her birth under Newell as my grandmother always had her birth surname in her full name.
You say that she was adopted shortly afterwards. Would that be days, weeks or months?
Sorry, here is another question - is there a reason you have put this on the Berwickshire, Scotland board?

Does anyone know where William Clayton Pendleton died? He was the son of James P Pendleton and Rebecca Ray, born in Kentucky (probably Bullitt county) in 1840. I have tracked him to Custer County, Nebraska in the 1900 census, living with his 3rd wife, Margaret. Living next door is his uncle, Fielden or Fielding Ray. I can find no later records of him. Others have posted a death date of 1919. Where did this info come from? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I found some additional information about Major Brian: I believe that some people are getting confused with Major Brian's Grandson? Major Brian, had a son Capt. James Pendleton & his wife Hannah Goodenow. They named one of their sons after Major Brian. Brian, the son of Capt James Pendleton was born 27 September 1659 in Sudbury, Middlesex, Massachusets? Also some people on their own have been able to track down where Major Brian was born in England? The exact date is still in question but the year and place is 1599, at St. Sepulchre's, in Lancastershire, England. Brian married an Elinor Price at St. Martins' at Birminham, England on 22 April 1619. I hope this helps with some confusion. Clay

It is true some people have assumed that Major Brian Pendleton was born in Sudbury, Middlesex, Masschusetts and have added this information on pedigree charts. Not knowing that such a place did not even exist? 1599 in America??? Brian's father: Edward, Jr. Pendleton lived and died around Manchester, Lanchashire, England. According to the findings of the Pendleton Compilier: Everet Hall Pendleton who wrote several books on the subject including Early New England Pendletons and according to his reasearch, Major Brian Pendleton us found testifying on July 2nd 1669 at the age of seventy and states that he was born in England. However, nothing is known of exact date and place of his birth in England? I would only assume his birth would be around the location where his father lived and died.

Did you ever find your William Pendleton married to a Judith Carr? I tried looking on FamilySearch.org and worked my way down from Brian and looked at each of the children. Caleb had a son named Caled but comes to an end. I can't find a Joseph who lived in NY that had a daughter named Annie Florence Pendleton. There is an Annie and Annie Susan Pendleton. I could not find a Judth Carr either? Do you have access to an Everett Hall Pendleton Book of the New England Pendletons?

Deacon Isaac and Lucy (Pendleton) Pendleton of Camden, Maine

I have no connection to this family. I just found this and thought someone on here might find it of interest.

From History of Camden and Rockport by Reuel Robinson, pp. 414-415:

“On March 12, 1874, the town lost one of its very old citizens in the death of Deacon Isaac Pendleton at the age of 92 years and 11 months. Deacon Pendleton was born in Islesboro in 1780, but came to Camden at an early age. He followed the sea for more than fifty years, and was a very successful master mariner, commanding first class coasters the most of the time. He owned the farm on the Belfast road, now owned by Mrs. Harriet B. Borland and Mrs. Chauncy Keep, his residence being the brick house, now a summer cottage. The ‘Norumbega’ property was also a part of his farm. Capt. Pendleton was for more than sixty years a consistent member of the Baptist church and was one of its deacons for more than fifty years. He married for his first wife, Lucy, daughter of Job Pendleton, by whom he had the following children: Belinda (who married Caleb Gilkey), Andrew, Sabrina (who married Henry Dodge), Cyrus and Joseph. For his second wife he married Mrs. Catherine Thorndike. Although living to a great age, he continued to be an important factor in the church and community until the last.”
