Re: Penfield

I was very sure of all my Penfield data until I came upon this info regarding Saumel Penfield, Jr and his wife Hannah.

Recent information has come to light regarding the wife of Saumel Penfield, Jr in the book Ancestry of Annie Frances Penfield (1853-1936) about the author's grandmother, available from Higginson Book Company . Part of this 720-page book covers Annie's line of descent from Samuel Penfield through six generations. Mr. Mower (the author) has supplied an excerpt from his book that covers this line, and allowed it to be mounted on this Web site. You can download it from the web. The careful research that went into this new book revealed SEVERAL minor ERRORS in the Florence Bentz Penfield book, and also one apparent case of mistaken identity in the second generation (Sam Jr.'s wife was Hannah Fry, not Hannah Shepard).

Hannah Shepard married Joseph Blanchard April 13, 1681 in Charlestown, MA. Joseph was born circa 1653. Joseph was the son of George Blanchard. Joseph died October 24, 1694 in Charlestown, MA, at age 41.

In case you haven't already found this:

Your John Giddings Penfield and Mary E Crosby are in the Penfield Genealogy, available on Ancestry. A main page search does not find them, so search on Penfield in the ancestry card catalog.

Good luck.

John G Penfield b 1824 Vermont

I'm just starting my research on the Penfields. And I'm only doing it for my wife's cousin, not because I'm in the Penfield line, so I don't have much real info at all. So far, all I have is John G Penfield, b 1824 Vermont (not certain of that) married Mary E Crosby b 1835 New Hampshire, and their daughter Helen Maria Penfield, b 1859 Illinois, who married Edwin Morton Revell in 1880. Any info at all on any of this line would be really really awesome as the kids say these days! A direct reply to me at tomseeley at hot mail dot com would reach me much faster than a post here, but either will work. Thx in advance.

I may have information on the children of Jesse and Mary Upson Penfield but I am traveling and don't have my hard copy data with me.
However, Jesse Penfield, son of Samule Penfield and Rebeca Scovil was born 1759 in CT and married Mary "Polly" Upson 21 Mar 1782 in what is now Plymouth, CT but was at the time part of Watertown, CT. Jesse purchased property from his father-in-law in Watertown (which adjoined property owned by his father Samuel Penfield).

Jesse served in 2nd Continentla Light Dragoons (Sheldon's Horse) durring the Rev War and moved to the area of Saratoga, NY after the war as did his father (most of Samuel's children also moved there)
My wife is decended from Samuel's youngest son, Jeremiah who married Jemima Parkhurst.
See if you can find a copy of "Descendents of Samuel Penfield" by Florence Bentz Penfield

Gene Frechette
gene3@aol.com

Origins of the Penfield's in England, on to America

The Penfield Book indicates that Samuel Penfield was born about 1651 in Lynn, Essex County, Mass.

But, the author gives no parentage for Samuel (many sources say his father was William). She speculates on the English origins of the surname, but had done no research on it herself.

So, what I am asking is: Does anyone have any knowledge of an effort to trace the Penfield surname in England?

Can anyone point to any websites that provide any real data to support an English origin? (Please, do not provide links to genealogies that have no sources, and are simply guesses on the part of whoever originated the "data".)

I have all of the Penfield's in the Penfield Book in my database by the way. I am more than happy to respond to e-mails.

Lynton (Bill) Stewart

I am seeking information about the Adney or Adnah Penfield family which moved from Camden, NY in the 1820's to Tecumseth, Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada. Adney died there in 1851 and some of his children went with him to Canada--children were Norris, Huldah, Jay, Harriet, Cornelia and Robert Lloyd. Adney was the son of Jesse Penfield & Mary Upson. He married Lydia Humiston. Holly Bell

Abiel Cheeney and Prudence Penfield were born in the town of Chatham, then including the present city of Middletown, in Connecticut, within twelve days of each other, in June, 1754. They were married in April 1772, and their first child was born in July, 1773. They are now living, aged over 89, in the city of New York, in good health, and cheerful possession of their faculties, he having never been sick in his life, excepting what he supposes the effect of strains and hard work as a ship carpenter, and she complained of rheumatism occasitonally. They have lived together, man and wife, over sixty-six years! and furnish a case of longevity, to which it would be difficult to find a parallel.

I have a old family tree of Amos Penfield and Altana Babcock and their children. It is probably 140 years old (the last entry was 1867). It has been passed down through my family. I will email a copy to anyone interested in it. I would love to compare facts with someone else who is a decendent of Amos Penfield.

Linda in Idaho

I am looking for ancestors and relatives of Andriana (Andrena 1911-1980's) Penfield Otto. Andrena (my grandmother) married Raymond Otto in 1926 and had 3 children: Marlys Rae (1929-1934), Charles Emanuel (1931-) and James.

Andrena's mother's first name was Rose.

Rose married __ Penfield, who worked in construction in Bismark, North Dakota. Rose ran a hotel and restaurant in the Bismark. Rose moved the family to Chamberlain, South Dakota (possibly without her husband) in the 1920's and ran a restaurant in town. Rose had another daughter named Molly (Muriel ?) and two sons Randall M. and Ronald (Ronnie). Both sons died fighting in WWII.

After her divorce,Andrena moved to Mitchell, SD and then to Carthage where she remarried Harry McGinnis and had 3 more children: Mary, Tom and Patrick.

Molly married a Bronco and had twins Walter and Wallace (Tiny). Molly remarried and had a male child. Her third marriage was to Flory Hines in Foresberg, South Dakota with no children.

Rose and Tiny are buried in the family (Penfield) cemetary plot in Esterville (?), Iowa.

I am looking for information on the children of Guy D. Penfield. Census 1860, Kalamazoo, Mich. His father was Horace Eddy Penfield and his mother, I believe was Carol Chandler. Did he die in Berkeley, Calif?
