Hi Ingrid
My mother was Catherine Henderson Anderson Penman, one of 8 children, Alexander and Mary nee Anderson were her parents, she did have a brother Robert 1893. Mum died when I was 5 years old and I moved to another town in Fife so I do not know anything about the family. The scottish Penmans' do not seem to be interested in the family tree.

Kind regards
Cathy's girl

If your father's name was Cowan Penman then I think he's the only one. If your father was not Cowan Penman then another Penman did get his DNA done and it also came up G2a.

Hi. In response to the query regarding research based on DNA and a name project, my father is a Penman, had his DNA decoded as haplogroup G2a. Are there any other Penman's out there who have had their DNA tested? Cheers, Ingrid

Hello there,
I am researching my family line and I have a Robert cowan Penman that is my great great grandfather and he married Sarah Elizabeth Allen. his father was George Borthwick Penman and he was married to Mary Cowan.
I don't know if we are related in any way to this line, however I live in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California- not too far from Quincy- although with the winter weather coming upon us getting up that way would be difficult, but even if we aren't related if you ever need anything from up that way I'd be happy to help. I know if I needed help somewhere I couldn't get I'd be grateful for anyone in an area to help me out.
You can contact me at kattboz@gmail.com
Katrina

Hi Sheila
Thank you for pointing out another problem with the data I picked up from Kenn Parkinson (Pedigree Resource CD 52).

Regrettably I added his data when I started my Penman One Name Study and I have found numerous errors in the marriages on his file. I have slowly been buying the certificate from Scotlands People and correcting my database.

I did find Robert’s IGI Christening record but entered it as a birth. I will correct both the marriage and birth information in my database right away. The changed database will be uploaded to WorldConnect at the end of April beginning of May 2010.

I hope you can help me out by sending me a copy of Robert's birth and marriage certificate to me at my home email address. My address can be found on my rootsweb database at
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=bpenman

Any help you can give me is very much appreciated.

Thanks
Barb Bennett

Hi Barbara
I have been looking at my Penman information and notice that you have some that is slightly different to mine.

Robert Penman bapt. 31.3.1822 and born 29.3.1922 to parents William and Allison nee Russell (sorry mistake in previous e-mail)
I have seen this bapt. in the Scottish records and I have the marriage cert. for him marrying Helen Thomson 18.01.1845
and on the 1851 census this shows Robert being born in Bothkenar - the Robert and Helen shown in your records - does not show him coming from Bothkenar. As you are aware there are many Robert Penman's born around the same time.
I have records of all their children - marriage certs etc. for their living children. I am as certain of the facts as I can be - I made several trips to the offices in Edinburgh
regards
Sheila Brine

Hi Donna

My mother Catherine was a Penman, twin to Janet they were the youngest of 8 children born to Alexander 1886 and Mary nee Anderson. Mary died when the twins were 1 year old at the age of 36 and my mother died when I was 5 years of age at the age of 26.
I think you will find that the majority of Penmans' in Fife were miners. Alexanders father John 1860 and his wife Elizabeth 1865 lived in Auchterderran, Fife.

Hope to hear from you again.

Kind regards
Irene

I searched Scotlands People for the marriage of John Marshall to Margaret Smith. I found 5 marriage record records. This one seems to be the most likley:

1943 MARSHALL JOHN, SMITH MARGARET HAWKIN, FALKIRK, STIRLING 479/00 0111 No Image

You will have to order it to confirm it is the correct one.

Barb Bennett

Hi Stacey, I can't help much with the Penmans. The relationship is through Mary Smith, niece of my grandfather, who married a Thomas Penman in 1903 in Scotland. They had 6 children (Jean, Alexander, Thomas, Margaret, James and John). They emigrated to the U.S. in 1928, settled in Detroit. One of their granddaughters, Mary, lives in Arizona. You can contact her through the Message Board; look for PENMANSHIP. She will probably be able to help you. Good Luck. Agnes Pavelko

Their daughter Mildred was my grandmother. Helens maiden name was Seymour I believe. Your really good at this, I'm just a rookie at searching. Please check your email. :)

Hi,
I saw your post on ancestory.com regarding your Penman family.
Your post caught my attention when you wrote that your Grandmother was born in Johnsville. I live in Reno and have spent a lot of time up at Graeagle and never knew of Penman Peak so immediately did a little research on it. There was also a Penman Peak Lumber Company. My husband's Grandmother was a Penman born in Scotland, so most of my Penman's are from Scotland, a few in England. I do a lot of genealogy research on the Penman family. Anyway I did take a look at the 1900 census which led me to more census research and found your William & Helen Penman in the 1910 in Johnsville, Robert & Mary 1920 in Sparks and 1930 in Sparks, their son Herbert is living with them. Also found William, son of Robert and Mary Ann Penman in 1880 census Jamison City, Plumas County. 1870 Quartz, Plumas County, 1860, Sierra Valley, Plumas County. I also found Mary Penman in the 1910 census Johnsville, widowed, owning confection shop, age 80. It says in this census that she immigrated in 1840, but she couldn't have been married yet as she was only 10 years old. Do you know her maiden name? I can't find a immigration date for Robert in any of the census'. Looked in some Kentucky records as that is where William states he was born but couldn't find anything. Do you have any idea where in England Robert was from?
You have me interested in this family now as it is very interesting there is a PENMAN PEAK just up the road? Where do you live?
Kathy
etakathy@aol.com

My Great Grandfather William Penman was born in Kentucky, June 1851. (his parents born in England) Was married to Helen, who was born in June 1868. Their daughter my grandmother Mildred Olive Penman was born April 29, 1899 in Johnsville Calif. I was always told that Penmans Peak in Plumas County was named after my Great Grandfathers family. I was also told that he was known for making snow shoes. He and Helen had 6 children from what I get from the 1900 Census.
Any information you have on my Great Grandfather would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
