Surnames: PENN, GRANVILLE, TAYLOR
The Penns of VA have been traced back to four apparent brothers in the early 1700s in Caroline Co., VA: (1) Moses Penn who married Catherine Taylor, (2) Joseph Penn who married Mary Taylor, (3) George Penn who married Elizabeth (Fleming?) and (4) John Penn, Jr., who married Mary (Chew?). Evidence is overwhelming that John Penn who died testate in Caroline Co., VA in 1741 is the father of these 4 brothers. His wife at his death was Elizabeth (Taylor/ Madison?) and I suspect that she was the mother of the 4 brothers. Yet, the long established rumor that the parents of the 4 brothers were John Penn (d. Westmoreland Co., VA in 1721) and Lucy Granville, daughter of Sir Bevill Granville and Lady Jane Wyche still survives and is going strong. Does anybody know what the original source of this rumor is/was? Where is there documentation to prove that a John Penn married Lucy Granville? Where is there documentation to prove that John Penn died in 1721 (whether in Westmoreland Co., VA or otherwise)? Where is there documentation to prove that this couple came to America? Virginia? Where is documentation to prove that John Penn and Lucy Granville had children, whether or not they include Moses, Joseph, George and/or John, Jr.?
