Unfortunately I'm not sure how I'm related to the Penns. The name only came up as my only DNA match a few years ago with Ancestry.com. I will have to dof more digging and get back with regarding the Penns.

Also, I noticed you are researching Chappell. I have a lot of Chappells in my family tree. My mother's maiden name was Chappell. I am missing several Chappells from my maternal lineage. My great grandfather was from South Carolina, but lived in Mississippi. It's most of his children that I am having trouble tracking. What can you tell me about the Chappells you are researching or have researched?

Hi,

I have been working on my family tree, which includes my great grandfather Thomas J. Penn. Family has told me he was Creek Indian. We are trying to find proof of this. I cannot find any information on when and where he died. If anyone can assist with this, it is appreciated.

Info:

Thomas J. Penn
DOB: Mar. 1870
Place: Georgia
Race: Mulatto/Black
Lived: Okmulgee, OK

He lived and had kids in Okmulgee, OK. He had a second wife by the name of Alice. He has a brother and son also named Thomas Penn. He has many kids. My grandmother told her kids, he was forced out of Georgia(I believe that's the state). He is mixed black with Native American or white. We were always told he was Creek Indian.

Hi,

Marcus Penn was the son of Russell Penn, a blacksmith in the 1870 Chambers County, AL Census. I actually located a will indicating Russell was given to the Penn Family. Please tell me how you believe you are related, or spell out your mothers lineage? I believe it may shead light on how our families are connected. I know many of the descendants. I know absolutely nothing about Marcus' mother and I hope that your connection may shead light on that part of the family. I have simply forgotten the last name of the family Russell Came from. I want to say it was Stozier...but I will look and find it.

1870 Chambers County reads:
Russel Penn 52
Lucy Penn 28

Then a few households over you find Marcus Penn:

Marcus Penn 9
Salina Penn 2
Sarah Penn 1
Ann Jones 28
Albert Jones 6
Nancy Jones 1

1880 Census reads:
Russell Penn 55
Marcus Penn 19
Sarah Penn 10
Henrietta Penn 8
I've hit a brick wall. The relation is probably on my mother's side. I had my DNA done with Ancestry.com several years before the new DNA program. A person identified as "Marcus Penn" resulted in a strong match (1st or 2nd cousin). Over the years, I've sent over a dozen messages to the person through Ancestry and no one responds. The person could be deceased. There are several gaps and few people I've been able to speak with in my family.

I will have to continue digging until I can connect the dots. I also discovered there were Black Penns living in Missouri. Can you share your tree and/or also tell me if you know of any black Penns in Missouri?

Hi,
thanks for contacting me.
I have hit the biggest, strongest, brick wall with George Penn Hamilton. I have his marriage certificate, a photo and a sample of his handwriting, his acting career as mentioned in The Stage, but cannot find his birth or death. He does not appear in any census' either.
I hope you are related and can shed some light on this very elusive character.
Diane Reynolds (nee Hamilton)

I, too, grew up hearing that we were related to William Penn. I have yet to be able to find the connection, but I'm continuing to dig! I'm guessing I'm not a direct decendant, but maybe a distant cousin.

My great great grandfather was James Penn (Sept. 1842 England - 12-9-1880). His father was William Penn(born 1817 England). This is all I've been able to trace, since I don't have access to any of the overseas files here on ancestry. Would LOVE to figure this out!!

Holly

Since posting this question, I have learned more about Mary Ellen Penn and her husband, James Forrester. In your information about that part of the family, there is an error - Hester Jane did not marry a "mr sense" of sistersville, wv.
I was thinking that if there is a documented Penn line, then the DNA testing would be able to show whether a descendant matched that line. I know that it can't get into specific names, dates, etc.

If records don't exist and DNA testing is out, then I can't think of how you would determine her heritage.

I do know that "making matches" causes all sorts of problems and inaccuracies -- i.e. finding a woman who "fits" by name or timeline.
