Christopher Pennington was the son of Joseph and Susannah Kincer Pennington. Joseph was the son of Benjamin Cregger and Jane H Pennington. They were never married and was brought to court for it in 1842. Story goes they separated bitterly and some kids went by Cregger while others Pennington. In 1852, Jane married John Sult, no issue. The family mostly lived in Wythe and Grayson Counties in VA. Jane seems to be connected to the Grayson County Penningtons due to the location and naming patterns of the children. I have not found amy evidence as to who were her parents. Also, Laura Sage's great grandpa James Sage was my 5th Great Grandpa. I descend from his son James b. 1784.

Timothy Pennington's (1748/9) father--one of two Ephraim Penningtons?

I'm looking for some assistance in establishing the true parentage of Timothy Pennington. He was born in 1748 or 1749 in Pennsylvania and died in 1826 in Monroe County, Kentucky, but I may have some of that information wrong (if it helps, it appears he was married to a Nancy Susannah Riggs).

I've found different sources that list his father as an Ephraim Pennington, but I believe there may be some confusion as to WHICH Ephraim Pennington.

Some sources cite his father as Ephraim Pennington V, born in Caldwell, North Carolina in 1794. If this is true, it would connect Timothy Pennington to a much longer line of Penningtons that may be traceable back to the 1300s in England. Most of these web sites (which are usually personal family tree pages) list Ephraim Pennington V as having fathered up to twelve children.

I did find one page, however, which suggested that the sources which cite Ephraim Pennington V as having had twelve children (including Timothy) are actually combining his list of offspring with that of another, possibly unrelated Ephraim Pennington who also lived in the United States at the time and was born about ten years apart. That source suggested that Timothy was the son of this other Ephraim Pennington, whose line can only be traced back one generation.

Most pages I've found say that Timothy's father was Ephraim V, with only a couple suggesting otherwise. Still, it seems like a common mistake to presume that a person with a certain name during a certain time was the ONLY person with that name during that time, so the idea that a lot of people have lumped together twelve children from two different fathers is certainly plausible enough. Can anybody help me shed some light on this issue?

Arthur Pennington of PRA has researched the Group 4 files to see if there was anything there and unfortunately there wasn't.
Penningtons of Henham & Chigwell, Essex, England

Dear Pennington Researchers

I have finally managed to put together a draft tree of the Essex branch of the Penington family. I think it is the only one publicly available on the web. This tree is based on a range of readily available secondary sources. And there are a lot of inaccuracies in these sources, especially Foster’s pedigrees! I have drafted a list of remaining questions that perhaps someone might be able to answer and so I have pasted it below in the hope that someone may be able to help.
And here is a brief summary of my research so far, together with some questions pertinent to my Spearing research:

My connection with the Pennington’s is via the Chigwell/Henham branch from Essex. In 1598, a John Pennington married an Alice Spering (1581-1637). She was the daughter of George Speringe/Speering (c1558-1611), my putative ggggggg grandfather (approximately). I’ve published the story of the London Spering’s on our website at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~spearin/tr...

Alice had a younger brother George (1601-1657) who married Rebecca Carter (c1610-1680). They had several children and apparently Rebecca moved to Limerick, Ireland, sometime between 1662 and 1680 (aged between 52 and 70). It is from these Spering’s that my Irish Spearin line is thought to have emerged. In 1680, Rebecca is reported as dying intestate in Ireland and her estate was granted to her “daughter and next heir”, Elizabeth Baynham (1634-1712). I’ve tracked down Elizabeth’s will (viewable with transcript at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~spearin/tr...) and it mentions several Pennington’s but it is difficult to know exactly where they fit into the Essex Pennington tree, especially Thomas Pennington, her Executor. Her Executrix was Mary Bramston nee Pennington, daughter of John Pennington and Sarah Abdy. Also, her goddaughter was Sarah Bramston, daughter of John & Mary Bramston.

I’ve tried to piece together the Essex Pennington tree using a variety of different sources (largely secondary) including Foster’s Pedigree’s, Berry’s Pedigrees, Visitations, parish records at Ancestry.co.uk, Boyd’s Inhabitants of London, various wills, and records from the Essex archives. However there are many apparent inaccuracies in these secondary sources. I’ve uploaded a tree at http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/tree/40143012/family/familyview and would really appreciate some help answering the following questions:
1. Alice Spering married John Pennington in 1598. His half-brother was Admiral Sir John Pennington (1568-1646) whose memorial I recently had the privilege of visiting at Muncaster. Was it unusual for two brothers to be called by the same name e.g. John the elder and John the younger? This is the first time I’ve seen this.
2. Can anyone direct me to the 1637 will of Alice Spering? I can’t find it in the National Archives, the Essex Archives, or the London Metropolitan Archives on Ancestry.co.uk.
3. In the Visitation of Essex in 1664, a John Pennington of Chigwell reports that he is married to a Catherine Luther (daughter of Thomas) and they have 4 daughters (Anne, Elizabeth, Katherine, & Martha). However, he states his father is John Penington (and therefore the same brother of Admiral Sir John Penington as above) but his mother is Mary (and not Alice Spering). This suggests his father was married twice but is there any other evidence of this? Or is the name for his mother entered incorrectly? Or did he forget that her name was Alice and not Mary?!
4. In the Visitation of Essex in 1634, a Thomas Pennington is recorded as being married to a Catherine Luther. Is this another Catherine by the same name? And if so, what is her relationship to the second Catherine Luther in the 1664 Visitation? Or is this the same Catherine Luther marrying Thomas before 1634 (say aged 16) and then his half-brother John about 1656 (aged 38?) and having her last child (Honoria) in 1666 (aged 48?) – is this possible?
5. Also, in the Foster Pedigree I got from the Essex Archives, he has the above Thomas married to a Rebecca and having a son Thomas in 1650. So was Thomas married twice? Or is this Foster mixing up his Pennington’s again?
6. There is major confusion in Foster’s Pedigrees between the children of John Pennington (1642-1702) and Sarah Abdy (1648-1690) and those of John Pennington (d1679) and Catherine Luther (1624-??bef1680). The will of my relative Elizabeth Baynham identifies Mary Pennington (daughter of John & Sarah Abdy) and her sister Elizabeth, but this Elizabeth did not marry James Saunders, it was the other Elizabeth (the daughter of John & Catherine Luther). The 1679 will of Thomas Penington (who died much later in 1714) also offers some helpful insights. Is this interpretation correct?
7. Did any of the Pennington’s have any dealings or interests in Ireland (Limerick in particular)?
8. Were any of the Pennington’s directly involved with Cromwell?
Any help you can offer with any of these questions would be greatly appreciated!
Regards
Maurice

Maurice Gleeson
Administrator
Spearin Surname Project
Spearin Facebook page
I'm descended from Martha Pennington, sister to Cephas Pennington. I'm very interested in knowing more about Thomas Pennington's family. Recently at the DAR library I found "Pennington Pedigrees" vol III No 1 (1971). It contained info from Mrs. George H. Schliechter re several Thomas Penningtons, including Thomas father of Cephas and Martha. This article says Thomas was born near Lancaster, PA, and emigrated to Ohio about 1813. It says his will was filed in 1831, and he died about 1857. I have put the information I'm accumulating on my ancestry.com tree, Holley Rider Drake Dunham family tree. Would be very interested in knowing what others have, particularly on Thomas, his unnamed wife, and his children.

James Lathim aka James Pennington

I came across this item on Google Books:

Book: Extracts from American newspapers, relating to New Jersey. 1704-1775, Volume 27, by William Nelson, (Trenton, N.J., 1894-1923)

— The New York Gazette; and the Weekly Mercury, No. 1032, Aug. 5, 1771.
NEW YORK. August 5. | We hear, that JAMES LATHIM, a Shoemaker, who escaped from John Robert Holliday, High Sheriff of Baltimore County, as has been advertised in our Paper for several Weeks past, has changed his Name to JAMES PENNINGTON, and left the Mare and Saddle at Trenton.

It’s not exactly clear if this James Pennington was an indentured servant or being held prisoner for a crime. I looked at the Aug. 5, 1771 issue of The New York Gazette, but couldn't find the item quoted above.

Does anyone have more information on James Lathim who changed his name to James Pennington?

Jennie Pennington, dau of John Abraham Pennington, Clark County, Arkansas

In 1900 Jennie Pennington is living with her parents in Clark County, Arkansas and that census states she was born August 1889 and she is 10 years old. In 1910 she is still in the John Abraham Pennington household in Clark County and she is 19 years old. A marriage record in Clark County may be Jennie -- A.P. Meacham to Jennie Pennington May 17, 1911.
The Arthur Person Meacham family is living in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1920. Jennie is shown as being 29 years old on that record. They have 3 children in the household, Ruth, Robert A. and Joseph. In 1930 they are still living in Oklahoma City and Jennie is 39 years old and there are 5 children in the household, Ruth, Robert A., Joseph, Mary Ella and Arthur Jr. who is not quite 2 years old on this record.
When Jennie's mother died in 1935 Jennie is not shown as a survivor in the obituary.
When did Jennie die? Where is she buried?
There is a SSDI record for a Robert A. Meacham that is probably Jennie's son - He died November 3, 1999 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas. What happened to her other children?
Any help on this family would be appreciated.
My father is Joseph Minter and he comes from a long line of Joseph Minters from Dakota County, Nebraska. His wife Susie McPherran, was believed to have haled from both Nebraska and Pennsylvania areas.

I have more evidence that my line through Joseph and Grace Pennington comes from the NC line of Levi Pennington. I had the Family Finder test done by Family Tree DNA. This tests 22 autosomal chromosomes so that you can find relatives not found using direct male (Y-DNA) or direct female (mt-DNA) lines. This test indicated that I had a family relationship, probably at the 4th or 5th cousin level with a man named Beason. His ancestor was Elizabeth Ann Pennington, daughter of Levi and Martha Pennington. She married Edward Beason and moved to Alabama.

Ted

HI. Im looking for this Pennington line.
as far back as i can go, is
William Pennington who married Bridget Hudgson on may 21, 1738.

they had 11 children. my line continues with their son William born in 1745.
after that, this William also has a son name William , who in turn , has a son named Albert Pennington. Albert has a son named Walter Pennington born in 1845, and died in 1885. Walter married Kathleen Tunaley.
they had four children"
Maud Edith Pennington
1875-1914
kathleen Muriel Pennington
1878 – 1943

Effie Gladys Pennington
1881 –

Eric Wilfred Pennington
1882 –

if anyone else out there has this family tree, or can in anyway help me trace how,if at all possible this line may be connected to the Pennington's of Muncaster Castle in Cumbria. I already know of the Pennington research website, but i was wondering if they are as good as they claim to be?
