There were 9 siblings, those are the ones I know. Lorenzo Dow the father took off and left the kids and went to Canada and remarried. His father was Parker, Parkers father was William III, his father was William II, his father was William, his father was Tobias, and his father was John, from England 1640.
Hi Carol,

Stephen Olen Pepper, son of Hiram was not married twice. I was referring to a Stephen O. Pepper that could be a possible brother or cousin to our Hiram. On the website, familysearch.org there are marriage records listed for Cuyahoga, Ohio. If you put his name (Stephen Pepper) in the search box you will find two marriages listed for him. His age and his marriage dates are similar to our Hiram's. I thought it could be possible that our Hiram may have had a brother named Stephen O. Pepper. Checking census records for this Stephen, I have found his birth date and place of birth very similar to our Hiram's, both New York. Also, our Hiram has a son with the same name. Just an idea.
Your Charles Pepper was incarcerated for larceny on 14 May 1880.
I saw the death record for Sally Ann Beebe and felt the same as you. It was too hard to read.
Do you have any old photos of the family? I have posted all that I have.

Colleen

Hi Colleen
Hiram's parents have been a bit of a mystery.. I am still researching that.. I do have a death certificate for Sally Ann Beebee that lists her mothers maiden name.. but I can not for the life of me read the handwritting. I have a copy of it attached to my tree. If you'd like a copy emailed to you, please let me know. I am still working on decoding the writing on the death cert.. so if I do, I'll forward that to you.

I wasn't aware Stephen Olen was married twice. I have only his wife Ella J Thomas b. 1860-1925. Stephen Olen married Ella in 1879(at age 20) and they show together on the census for 1880. 1900, 1910, 1920... (Ella dies in 1925)..1930 he shows Widowed, living with son Henry Clay, Henry's wife Bertha. In 1880, Stephen's brother Charles wife Sadie (my decent line) is shown living with stephen and ella, and the children (stephen and ella's, and Sadie with her children).Sadie is showing as married (not widowed or divorced)and we believe charles was away working or incarcerated at that time. Then Charles dies in 1882.. Sadie does re-marry.

If Stephen Olen remarried after 1930 I would love to have that information. He was at that time 71... I am searching the 1940 census records, but it is taking some time since its not searchable by name yet for Michigan.. I then have Stephen Olen dying in 1941.

I hope this helps.. Let me know if I can assist further :)
Carol
Hi Carol,

I apologize for not being clearer in my request. Do you have any information on Hiram Pepper and/or Sally Ann Beebe's parents? I do have a Walter Beebe for Sally's father, but nothing on Hiram's. Also, do you know if Hiram had any siblings? I am tracking a Stephen O. Pepper who was born close to the same year as Hiram and also born in New York and lived near Hiram in Ohio. This Stephen was was married twice. Both marriages were taken place in the same area as Hiram's two marriages (Cuyahoga, Ohio.)I thought perhaps that since Hiram named one of his sons, Stephen Olen Pepper that it may have been after his brother.

Colleen

Hi Justin, thank you so much for this information. I so enjoy hearing these stories. I just found out yesterday who he worked for and now I have met three people including you who have enriched by family. I found out who he worked for when I ran into news paper artical stating my grt grandfather won for entries he entered into 1912 Phila. Horticulture Soc. The artical listed that he worked for J.W.Pepper Esq. as a gardner. It didn't take long to find out more about his work. Thanks to you and the others for helping me put more of the puzzle together. I will be in the Phila area in Oct & hope to find out more. Joy
Thank you so much Diane. This is so exciting to me to see his name in print after all these years. I always knew he was a landscape gardner, but didn't know until yesterday who he worked for. The family story was he was born in Ireland, moved to Scotland and he worked for my grt grandmothers family as their gardner when they met. We were told her family didn't want her to marry him, but she did & they came to Philadelphia, Chestnut Hill, Germantown and raised their children. One of his son's Hugh also was a gardner for a while. You & Jody have brought me closer to knowing my family.......thanks again. Joy

Hi Joy,
Saw your recent post. From 1964 until 2008 my parents lived in a house they built on what was the sunken garden of the Pepper Estate. It was part of what was called Fairacres. The landscape architect was Wilson Eyre.I have many, many pictures of the wonderful gardens your grandfather kept but have never come across any pictures of any humans except the one of the lady and child mentioned earlier. I will look for any mention of your grandfathers name in the original publications about the estate that I have collected from the early 1900s.I would also suggest you contact the Old York Road Historical Society. Check their hours before you go. The web site is www.oyrhs.org. As a child growing up, I had the duties of taking care of the yard where our house was built, watering the old shrubs, mowing the lawn etc. Even then, ther were so many remnants of the original terraced garden (the old brick walk, the hanging wisteria, the fish pond and the huge corinthian stone capitals to name a few).I wish there way some way I could say thank you to your grandfather for giving us so much pleasure for all those years. We always knewthat spot was special. Good luck. Contact me if you have any questions. Justin P. Borkowski
Joy,

The only picture that I had with any people, was a photo of a woman and little girl looking into the gardens. The Old York Road Historical Society has a lot of pictures and info about the estate. They are located in the the Jenkintown Library on Old York Road. I moved several years ago so I stopped researching the property. Good luck!
Jody

Hi ladies, not sure if you are still active with Ancestry, but I thought I would send this message anyhow. My great grandfather was a gardner for John W. Pepper. His name was William Robertson, born in Ireland where he was also a landscape gardner. I don't know the answers to any of your questions, but I wondered if either of you have any pictures of the gardens which show any of the gardners?

Joy McIntyre

Hi Sherri,
I saw your post and it is the same family. Nice to meet you. My husband is descended from John Pepper and his second wife Nancy Wilson's son Andrew Pepper. When was your Stanley Garfield Pepper born? If it was before 1835 then he was John Pepper Jr.'s brother not child. If it was much later then, please send me as much info on your branch as possible and I will add you to the family tree.
Here is some of what I have so far:

Some of John Pepper’s brothers went west by wagon train “to help protect the Commonwealth” at the time of the Louis Riel uprisings in the West. John was a Black Knight of the Orange order. Some meetings of the first Orange Lodge, Number 1, in Canada, were held in the living room of the farm at Addison, Ontario. John would raise the flag (Union Jack) high on a pole to tell everyone that an Orange Lodge meeting was about to take place. Hanging on the wall was a painting of King William on his horse (which the wife of Joseph still has to-day). It was brought with the family from Ireland. His first wife was believed to be Tom Giff’s sister whose name is carved into the attic rafter of the stone house on the Pepper farm near Addison, built in 1843. First Orange Lodge was organized by Ogle R. Gowan in Brockville in 1831, founding the Grand Orange Lodge of British America. Mr. Gowan came to Brockville from County Wexford, Ireland in 1830.
Children by John's first wife Eliza Edwards [a widow when she married John Pepper, perhaps Giff was her maiden name]
-a. Charles Pepper
-b. Stanley Pepper

Second wife- Nancy Wilson, born March 19, 1815 in Belfast, North Ireland. Died March 3, 1893, aged 77 years, 11 months and 15 days. She was 36 years old at the time of the 1851 census.
Children by his second wife
-c. John Pepper Jr- born c.1835
-d. Jane Hewitt - born 1837
-e. Mary Cardiff- born 1839
-f. Andrew Pepper- born 1847

a. Charles Pepper2- son of John and his first wife (believed to be a Giff) probably born at the family homestead near Addison, Ontario. No date of birth researched, buried in Pepper Cemetery on farm. Married, date or wife’s name unknown. Was a blacksmith at North Augusta, Ontario.
Children-one son- George
-George Pepper-son of Charles (son of John). Only information researched is that he was the mail carrier from Toledo to Forthton. He was buried in the Pepper cemetery on the farm.
b. Stanley Pepper-son of John and his first wife (believed to be a Giff). Probably born at the family homestead near Addison, Ontario. Migrated to Potsdam, New York. No further information. I'M GUESSING THIS IS YOUR STANLEY GARFIELD PEPPER
c. John Pepper Jr.-son of John and his second wife, Nancy Wilson, Probably born at the family homestead near Addison, Ontario. Date of birth, probably 1835, date of death, unresearched. Buried in Pepper Cemetery beside his wife whose name was Sally Richards.
There were 8 children:
a. Eliza Jane(spinster)-born Feb. 20, 1860.
b. William Edward-born Oct. 28 1862. Died in June, 1914 of tuberculosis. Was the father of 3 children.
c. Mary Anne Wilson-born Feb 28, 1865. Died July 23, 1944.
d. Caroline Giffin3-born Dec 5, 1867. Died in 1937.
e. Adeline Reynolds3-born Nov. 30,1869. Died in 1928.
f. John Herman 3-born Nov. 27,1872. Died in 1954.
g. Alfred 3-born Nov. 2, 1874. Died Sept 13, 1958.

cheers,
Maggie Walker

Dear Kathy,

I am indeed in Canada. I live in Toronto,Ontario. I believe I have a copy of Bob Pepper's notes, or at least a draft of them, which I got from my mother in law Dianne Pepper. She wrote the book. He added pictures and some personal information on his branch into the copy I have on my computer. I've been working to fill in additional details and to find documented proof for all the facts. Ideally I want to trace the family back farther to their Irish origins and then to their British. I'm just starting to enter everything into my Family Tree Maker software.

I've been digitizing historical family photos and documents to add to the Family history book I want to create.

If you'd like to discuss the family tree project email me your phone number at grannyknots@yahoo.com and I'll call you.

cheers,
Maggie
Feel free to join us on Facebook:
http://tl-ph.facebook.com/group.php?gid=4218305741&v=wal...

The Pepper Family Originating From Ireland
Hi, I am the grandmother of cowgirl5909 ----she started this and then dropped it and I have picked up. Ezeriah was married to Mary Walker and they had Florence Velera Pepper in 1870. She was my grandmother's mother. Velera married Robert Monroe Smith, and they had 3 children, Otis, Thular and my grandmother Mary Lula Jane known to all as "Jennie". She married John Thomas Taylor. If we have any connection--family wise, please let me know. my e-mail is veawea@aol.com. I have been told her name was VELERA however I have seen it spelled as i.e.celery VELERY
Do you know for sure. Thanks, Vera Weaver

Andrew J. Pepper
OHara

Andrew J. Pepper, of O'Hara,
died Friday, July 1, 2011.
He was born on May 16, 1923,
to Joseph Pepper and Mary (Rotunda) Pepper.
Andrew married Anna Ruth (Nairn) Pepper in 1958 and was a resident of O'Hara for 50 years. Andy attended Central Catholic High School. He received both bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. A Kopper's Company employee since 1950, Andy became Vice President, management information systems, in the company's Finance Department. In retirement, he continued his oil paintings, his parties with the "Oakland Gang," and his family vacations. He also had a special appreciation and love of music, especially for the talented musicians at his yearly parties. Sir Winston Churchill said, "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." Andy will be remembered by his family and friends as a loving and giving man, mentor and advocate. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him, but we know we will be reunited with him again. Andy was the beloved husband of Anna Ruth (Nairn) Pepper; father of Christopher A. Pepper, Mary Elizabeth (John) Spires and Andrew J. Pepper, Jr.; brother of Joan (Herbert) Reiter, Connie (James) Ardolino and the late Irene (Vincent) Bucci and Victor (Patti) Pepper.
It is a Word document, as it was never published. I've been going through it and trying to find the truth behind the family stories. There are some stories that have been handed down which I've found to be based on suppositions and not historical facts. My mother in law says that she spent years visiting cemeteries around Smiths Falls, Ontario searching for the family graves. Some of the dates in her little book were taken from the grave markers. I myself hope to visit the cemeteries and take photos of them in order to preserve them for future generations as they are starting to show signs of wear.

I will ask her if she minds me sharing copies of her research.
Nathan Matthew Pepper North Carolina to Tennessee

Hello,
I have had quite a difficult time finding out much about my 3rd great grandfather, Nathan Matthew Pepper. What I believe to be true is he was born around 1792 in North Carolina , eventually married a woman named Elizabeth who was born in 1799, and by the 1820 census they were living in Robertson, Tennessee, where they continued to live for most of their adult lives. He was still alive in 1860 in that county, where I believe he eventually died. I don't have a date for that. He and Elizabeth had a number of children, including Louisa Pepper, my 2nd great grandmother. Louisa was born 7 Aug 1821 in Robertson County, married John Fletcher England ( 1813-1886) in Tennessee and eventually migrated to Guadalupe County, Texas. I wonder if anyone perhaps has any information on these folks? I am particularly puzzled about who Nathan Pepper's parents were. I would be extremely grateful if you could shed any light on this limb of my tree. I would love to hear from someone.

Best regards,
Robin Inman

"Ace" Pepper, son of Andrew and Martha Pepper, born Ackley Wanford Pepper on 06 Mar 1881. He and his brother George Middleton Pepper built a plane. They would have beat the Wright Brothers into the history books for the first successful flight if they hadn't crash landed during their flight.

Yes, Drumheller was the west that Silas' mother Martha moved to when she left Andrew. Silas [born 04 Jul 1873 in Elizabethtown, Leeds,ON[old Brockville];died 13 Dec 1949 in Smiths Falls, Lanark, ON]and Maggie [born 16 Jul 1881 in Drummond, Lanark, ON; died 10 Dec 1962 Smiths Falls, Lanark County, Ontario].

The libraries don't have a copy of the Pepper book, as it was written by my mother-in-law and my sister-in-law in Word format. It isn't perfect but contains alot of information that they found and were told by other descendants of Andrew Pepper's.

Do you own/use genealogy software? If so, then I can send you a gedcom file of what I have so far.

I've been painstakingly entering in any info that I can find. The Pepper book is long, so I'm still trying to get it entered into the program. I would caution that while reading the book, be aware that most of it was based on family recollections or cemetery transcriptions. I've been discovering errors in some of the book's facts when I try to verify them with historical sources. I'll be sure to keep you posted as I correct or clarify them with documentary proof.

I'd love some information on what happened to Ace Pepper and his family. I only know that he moved out west and built an airplane with his brother. He visited family in Ontario only a few times after that. Then he fell off the family radar.I look forward to collaborating with you.

Maggie
