Patrick:

I would like to update my previous thread and ask for your assistance.

As originally thought, Alexander Percival did not migrate from Ireland to South Carolina. Family history says that it was Alex's father, James.

Based on census reports, the age of James and when heavy migration patterns occurred from Ireland to the U.S., I think it was James' parents who migrated from Ireland to the U.S.

Unfortunately, the brick wall in my research is that I do not know the name of James' parents.

Would you happen to have a list of Percivals that arrived from Ireland to the U.S. via the Charleston port?

Thank you in advance.

Thank you so much for all of this. I believe it's the Alfred married to Julia that's our family. I will look for the immigration papers next as you recommend. William is noted on his death record, but not his mother's name. I will keep trying. If you find anything else, I really appreciate it.

Best regards,
Kat

Re: Albert Percival b 1857 England

I can see only one Albert Percival of the right age in the 1861 Census of England. He is living in Clifton Reyes, Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, with parents James and Mary Ann, and brothers Thomas and Leonard. James is a shepherd. However, he is still in England in the 1871 and 1881 censuses, and I cannot find anyone like him in the US 1880, 1900 or 1910 censuses.

Could the name have been Alfred? I know that sometimes names are transcribed badly or people use an alternative.

I can find an Alfred Percival in the US, married to Julia and he moves from Pennsylvania to Illinois to Ohio. He immigrated to the US in 1870 and he is a brass molder. His wife Julia was born in the US but her parents were born in Germany (which fits with a surname of Freiberger).

FamilySearch has the death record for Alfred Percival on 10 May 1824 in East Cleveland, Ohio. It gives wife's name as Julia K and his father as William.

The England census for 1861 gives 3 Alfreds of the right age with fathers William. One of these families is still in Cheshire in 1871 (it's not them). The other two are:

William Percival b 1817 living in Shoreditch, Middlesex (essentially part of London). He is a general hawker. Wife Hariet and 7 children.

William Percival b 1819 living in Ashton-under-Lyne, Dunkinfield, Lancashire. He is a brass moulder. Wife Harriet b 1825 and children John, Thomas, Ann, Mary, Alfred and Elizabeth.
This one is particularly interesting because of the occupation.

I have no was of knowing if either is correct. Can you access the immigration records on Ancestry and check the ship manifests for 1870?

Good luck.

Sarah Percival

Robert Percival

We are trying to find a picture of Robert Percival, who founded the town of Percival, Iowa, and is buried in nearby Sidney, Iowa. He was a lawyer, later working in Council Bluffs, Iowa. This is his obit:

THE DAILY GLOBE Fremont County, Iowa March 10, 1886

Robert Percival
Died. Tuesday, March 9th, 1886 at 6 p.m., of apoplexy. Hon. Robert Percival, in the 57th year of his age.--Yesterday evening with the going down of the sun passed away in peace the spirit of Robert Percival. Mr. Percival was born in the year 1830 at Chatham Head, Northumberland county, New Brunswick. At the age of 16 years he left home to seek his fortune and found employment in a ship yard in Maine, as a ship carpenter. From there he went to New York City where he again found employment as a carpenter. Leaving New York City, he moved to Chariton county, Missouri where he taught school and took up the study of law which was destined to be his life calling. Shortly after this he came to Crescent City and then to Council Bluffs.....From here he went to Plum Hollow in Fremont County, Iowa, and taught school two terms still continuing, out of school hours, those arduous studies which made him one of the safest of legal counsellors. After having undergone the necessary training in 1855, Mr. Percival received his license to practice law from the district court at Sidney, Iowa, and at once engaged in the practice of his chosen profession in partnership with William Kelsey......
Hi,

I have recently started on Percival as part of my overall research, primarily because there is quite a lot of known information from livinging relatives (my mother-in-law is a percival). Also I live close to the area where there was a concentration of the family. I am trying to convince my family to take a tour of the churchyards to find some of them. Areas to explore where they were born, resided and were married:

Mitford
Morpeth
Hebron
Highlaws (old name - Espley area)
Fenrother
Netherwitton
Longhorsley
Framlington (Longframlington)
Rothbury
Shilbottle
Warkworth

Isaac mentioned earlier in the thread is known to the family. He was an innkeeper of some sort I understand.

Names I have on that branch (still confirming):

Thomas Graham Percival
Thomas R Percival
Margaret Grey
Isaac Percival
Jane Ann Carmichael
Robert Percival
Hannah Thompson
John Percival
Margaret Ellis
George Percival
Mabel Hudson
John Percival
Jane Rennison
Catherina Johnson
Lancelot Rennison
I am also descended from the Percivals of Rockcliffe. My gt gt grandmother was Elizabeth Percival who married John Little about 1842. Unfortunately she died, 3.12.1878, probably in childbirth, leaving Margaret 9, Edward 6, John 3(My gt grandfather)Betsy 8mths. There were three Pervival families living in Rockcliffe at the time. Edward Percival with wife Maraget(Elizabeth was their daughter)also Margaret & Thomas. William Percival with wife Elizabeth and son John, Edward & William were both born in Bowness and may be related. Edward's father was John Percival 1752-1822 born in Bowness. William had two grandsons living with him in 1851 so presumably he had children older than John

Andrew Jackson Percival was a lawyer and the son of Charles Jefferson Pursifull and Asa MacPheeney Dulgar. He was married twice. The first marriage resulted in a daughter, June, Who married, worked at Martin Marietta in Orlando until retiring to Co. until her husband died, when she moved to Texas where her daughter lives. Andrew J. P. remarried some 20 years later to Mary Retha Rea Shelton and had a son who became a lawyer for the CIA (Andrew J. Jr.), and two daughters, one who became a renowned floutist and married James Demetri Politis and had five children and I'm not sure about the other one, but all three are now deceased. Andrew was my father's uncle and was one of five children. One sister never married. His brother Ray was my grandfather, and another brother went out west and lost touch with the family. My father never spoke of his family until on his death bed at which time he introduced me to his cousin June, Andrew's daughter. I probably have more filed away somewhere. What is your interest?

Hi, I believe that Richard Percival, married to Ann is my great great grandfather (not sure about the number of greats there).

My father is Barry Fredrick John Percival, his father was Stanley (John?) Percival, lived in Wanganui and I believe the Richard Percival and Ann that you refer to landed in nelson in 1854/55 or so.

My Dad did a family tree thing when I was a teenager but I've since lost it all but one thing I remember is that my relatives landed in Nelson at this time and it was Richard and Ann. I remember the story about a child being born on the ship, I thought it was during passage from England though.

Cheers,
Rick

Rick.Percival@gmail.com

Descendant of Elizabeth Percival, 1675-1728

My direct paternal family line is connected to Elizabeth Percival (1675-1728), who married Joseph Ashley (1671-1754). Elizabeth's parents were James Percival III and Mary Rainsford (whose father was Edward Rainsford).
Elizabeth and Joseph Ashley had a son, Joseph Ashley Jr.(1720-1778), who married Elizabeth Swift (1724-1780) and they had a daughter, Phebe Ashley (born May 25, 1751 in Rochester, Plymouth, Massachusetts), who married my fifth great grandfather, Edward Hackett and I am a descendant of those lines (Ashley and Percival) through their son, John Hackett, who was my fourth great grandfather.
I understand that my seventh great grandmother, Elizabeth Percival, was connected to a very long line throughout European history. Could someone elaborate on this history for me (as much as possible within the limits of a message board reply space of course) please?
Thank you for your kind consideration and help in this matter.

Thomas Percival, 1897-1968, Connecticut

I’m trying to work out the relationships from successive Census returns and any other information of Koenigsburgs, Moehls and Thomas Percival.

In 1900 Frank Koenigsburg and his wife Barbara from Germany were living with their daughter Louise (18) in Hamden, Connecticut. Frank was a blacksmith and owned his house. In the same Census Mary Moehl and her 3 children Jacob, Elizabeth (26) and George (20) were living in W Porter St, New Haven, CT. She owned her house.

In 1910 Mary Moehl is living in New Haven, CT, with children Elizabeth and Jacob. George is not there.
Louise (nee Koenigsburg) Moehl is living with her parents Frank and Barbara Koenigsburg in Hamden with four of her children, Gustav (8), George (6), Barbara (4) and Charles (3) Moehl. No husband listed.

In 1920 George Moehl (39), a widower, is living at 10 North St in Hamden, New Haven with his 4 children, Gustav, George, Barbara and Charles. In the same house are Thomas Percival, his wife Rose and their infant daughter Charlotte.

In 1930 Thomas Percival (31) is living on Winchester Av, New Haven, CT, with wife Rose (32), daughter Charlotte and son Thomas – and Elizabeth Moehl (54), described as aunt.

It seems clear that Elizabeth and George Moehl were siblings. George married Louise Koenigsburg and she died, leaving him with 4 children. But I cannot find a blood connection between the Koenigsburg/Moehls and the Percivals.

If I have the correct Thomas Percival, his parents were James Percival and Sarah Farnsworth, both from England and both sets of their parents from England, so my supposition is that the Moehl connection is through Rose, but I cannot work it out. Rose’s maiden name appears to be Thompson and her father was born in Scotland. She was born in NY.

Does anyone have any connection with or knowledge of these families and can you help sort this out? I may have the wrong Thomas Percival, or maybe Elizabeth Moehl was an honorary "aunt" and here is no blood connection.
Thanks, Sarah Percival

I would be interested in knowing any more information you have related to this obituary. Searching for descendents of a brother to my ggf, born in SC in 1840s, who reported he had a brother named John (in 1873). Not likely to be same person, as I have no known link to Oklahoma, but would be interested in anything you have.

I'm looking for information on the desendents of Richard Percival 1789-1857 married to Margaret Sheppard from Eye, Herefordshire. Two of there sons Richard and John went to Nelson New Zealand. Their son Richard married to Ann had a child while the ship was still in the dock. The child was called Katherine Inchinnan Percival after St Katherine dock and the name of the ship. They had a large family in Nelson and one son George Henry Percival who moved to Perth Western Australia in 1898. I'm happy to share any information I have.

My maternal grandfather was David Crowell Percival, a wholesale jeweller born in 1870 in Boston. His great great grandfather, a silversmith in Sandwich, MA was James Percival, born c. 1756, died 1837. Married Fear Crowell. From there I draw a blank and can't trace back to Sir James Percival of Somerset, England. Would love some help and it'd be fun if we were all somehow related. I remember when my family was alive, their mentioning how they (the Percivals) were related to Sir Spencer Pericival (British Prime Minister 1812) and "Mad Jack" Percival, some kind of pirate operating off the N. Africa shore. Wow,this genalogy thing is fun!

Bruce

really hope someone can help me as i seem to have hit a brick wall with this one.

Mary Percival was born in 1862 in lancashire (95% sure it was in Liverpool) She married Rueben Stamper who was born in 1859 in Liverpool.

They had 5 children for definate, Martha Ann (B 1882) Rueben (B 1884), Thomas (b 1886), John (b 1890) and Mary Ann (b 1892).

in the 1891 census they are all listed as living in 5 court 1 house duckinfield street in liverpool.

My problem is though that i cant find anything about Mary Percival's family - although i do believe that she may have had a sister called margaret percival - who i also believe married somebody called Ingham?

PERCIVAL, Harry

Harry was born in Daventry, Northamptonshire in 1900. His father George was in the army and died in 1901. His mother Alice, nee Gee died in 1903. The family were dispersed to relations on both sides of the family. Some were adopted but retained the Percival surname. I have traced them through the 1911 census but Harry is missing. I have tried army records for WW1 and child migration without any success. If you have any clues about this man - presuming he grew to adulthood as I have not found a record of his death- I would appreciate hearing from you.
Regards. Marleen

Re: Irish Indentured Servants

I have no idea how I missed you. My grgrandfarther's name was James Percival (son of James Percival who married Mary Jane Nobles). I have always hit a brickwall at this point. I have been in contact with THouston on a few occasiona via email. She sent me as she has probably sent you the family history she has gathered over the years. Could you please shed some light on James Percival and Mary Jane Nobles....my grgrandparents left the South and came north. This is where the family stories get a little confusing. When did he come to the U.S.? Why was he an indentured servant? What was his parents name? My goal is to collect as much information to pass on to my children and grandchildren.
