My grandfather, Harold Pruyn (Perine), learned that one of his GG uncles was a horse thief and was hanged (he stopped doing genealogy after that). If it was a Perine, it would be a son of John and Abigail Niles, born in the early 1800s.
Has anyone heard of this story?

Georgia, good to hear that you are back in TX vs. the mid-west winter! I'm replying quickly without studying your note in detail yet.

I think John Mark has also mentioned the Wood Co. tax records, at least a Wood Co. reference. Don't forget that at one time Wood Co. extended a lot further north and west than it does now. That deed from the Hughes River would fit with this. Most interesting.

I'll respond to the other branch of this thread later. Eight degrees here this morning.

Richard, it has been awhile since we wrote. I am still working on finding Isaac Perine/Perrin in Washington co. OH. In the INDEX TO OHIO TAX LIST 1800-1810,I have found Perrin/Perren/Prime/Prior/Pryor from a variety of counties. in the OH 188 Territorial Census Index Substitute I found and ISAAC PRYOR and PRYER in Wahington Co. Newton Twp./ for 1803. Also an EZRA PERRIN same place and year, two SAMUEL PRIOR's from Waterford and Newton twp., Washington co(1800). And Samuel, 1803,Newton twp. Washington co. Other Perrine I see area William and a Timothy.
I am thinking the Perine's probably were in WAshinton co. as it is close to then VA. I found list of first group of people from CT but it only list the "important" people (the ones that organized the trip etc.) Marriage books I looked at were no help but did get names of some other books that are in HIstorical Societies in some OH city (forget which one)which may help. Just need to go there or hire someone to do a look up. I'm in TX for winter and plan on going to LDS library here and see what I can order on early Ohio.

mdungey - I am very interested in your reply for a couple of reasons. First, I have been studying the Perine branch of my family for several years and had never heard of a reunion. Second, it would be interesting to find who the VanScoy is that was communicating with your father. The only female VanScoy associated with Perines (that I know of) that has died recently would be Lucille VanScoy, my uncle Buera's second wife, who died in November 2007. Is this the contact?

I am from the Isaac line and am your father's fifth cousin. My parents both grew up in Greenbrier District of Doddridge Co. My sister and I have made several trips to the homeplaces and cemeteries in the area although I no longer live in the state.

My father & I are interested in attending the next Perine family reunion if it is still being held. It has been about 15 years since we have been to one. My father said the lady who would tell him about it, a VanScoy, has since died. If anyone knows if it is still being held please let me know.

I do have a copy of the deed of land in Harrison County that was between a John and Rachel Bray of New Brunswick, Monmouth County, NJ and Henry Perrins of Monmouth, NJ started in 1785 and then signed in 1799. I guess that's when he paid it off. I have not found a deed of sale for Henry Perrins selling the land so I don't know what happened with it. The deed named only Henry, no wife. The deed does say Henry Perrine in the last part, not Henry Perrins. The land is includes 4 tracts;patents#3,5,6 and 9. I don't know where that is in Harrison County. That's all I have.

Sounds like we are in about the same place. I have often wondered about that Henry guy also. A town of Salem is associated with that but the current town of Salem in Harrison Co. was called New Salem at the time. I have not seen the deed record in Harrison Co. Do you have a photo? I agree on the lack of Perines vs. Perrins in CT. However, the records of the orphans show the name spelled in many, many ways, of course.

I'll have to look . I think I saw it in 1880 census for Richard but could be very wrong. May have been for his wife and my lousy eyesight tricked me. I got the same thing with the two sisters. I am still wondering about a Henry Perrine who bought land in Harrison County before 1800, because I have not found a deed where he sold it but once again I might have missed it. He was from New Jersey so would have been from those Perines. I think you're right about Richard stating Isaac as a family member standing p for him but could it have been his brother Isaac? I have looked in the books in Genealogy Library in Salt Lake City for Perine in Connecticut but always seem to find Perrin only. I have not found any land deed for Perine at Library in Harrrison Co. other than Henry but that could mean nothing.

Do you have a reference to the Richard/Ohio comment? In the 1880 census William says his parents were both born in Connecticut. Richard, at his second marriage, says his parents were Issac and Nancy. However, since that was the name of his oldest son and daughter-in-law, many of us believe he was really answering a next of kin question. Richard also says he was born in Harrison Co., VA. There were two sisters, Merinda and Mary Ann. The former married a Childers and the latter a Tingler. Our theory in brief: These kids parents came from New England with other documented Perines. Parents died, kids were taken in by settlers at the forts along the West Fork. Lots of circumstantial evidence, no proof positive.

I am the great great granddaughter of William through his son Huston's second wife(Amanda).I have nto been able to link back past 1800 either but I did notice on one census that Richard has his parents being from Ohio.

Hello, I have read the Howard Delano book, which is a great source of information. But, I am trying to locate one piece of information and maybe you can assist, since you, also, are directly related. I am a direct descendant of Daniel Perrine who arrived in 1665, living in the historic Richmond House.
Do you have any information on William Perrine (Perrin) who was born in 1724 in Perrineville, NJ and died there in either 1779 or 1785? I am trying to determine his wife's name and date information. He is the son of John Perrine, born 1690, died 1779, Perrineville, NJ.
I have Edward Perine married first Sarah Hillyard on 12 September 1783. They had no children. He then married Patience Mersereau on 7 June 1790. They had a son John Edward Perine who married Lucy(?) Ann Sharot on 20 August 1841. I also have more on down to the present if you would like.

Deb
Thank you for checking again. Every source I have for George shows his middle initial as H, even on his death certificate. I'm fairly certain that Martha was James' only wife. They married in 1845. I found the marriage listed in the newspaper. George H. was born in 1852 with at least one other child before him. Apparently these Perrines are not related to a line I've heard about. Are you looking in "Daniel Perrine, the Huguenot and His Descendants"? I have been unable to locate a copy in any of my local libraries.
Thanks again for your help.

So far I have checked every George with a middle name beginning with H and every James with a middle name starting with W, with no results. Is it possible that George's middle initial is actually a W and not an H? They look so much alike in signatures it is sometimes difficult to tell what the letter is supposed to be.
Another thought --is it possible that Martha is not the first wife...the family were very adept at marrying many times. It just seems odd that I can't find her in the book as that is usually the easiest way to search.

REvans
Unfortunately I don't have a middle name for James, yet. On the census records a middle name or initial is not used. On the 1840 census, however, there is a James listed that may be the one I'm looking for and there is a "W" written as a middle initial. Martha used a "C" on one of the census records. His son George, who is the direct ancestor, always uses an "H" as a middle initial. Thanks for checking, sorry I don't have the right info for you.

I checked the book for a Martha Dennis and she is not listed. There are many James Perrines in the book so the easiest way for me to search is by a middle name. Is there any chance you have James' middle name?

Rose

I'm looking for information on James Perrine born in New Jersey about 1820. He lived in the Pemberton, Northampton area, married Martha Dennis (born 1830) in 1845. They had six children and he died about 1904 (?). I can't find any birth or death records. Census records state that his parents were also born in New Jersey. Thanks.

Georgia, I have seen your name on boards previously and responded to you once. I'm one of the people who is trying to establish the parentage of the "orphan" brothers, William, Isaac and Richard Perine. My grandmother was Martha Rebecca Ann Perine, a great granddaughter of Isaac Perine (b. 1808). Do you have anything to support the VA to CT to VA story?

I continue to search for clues as to the ancestors of the "orphan" brothers of the Subject line. My grandmother was Martha Rebecca Ann Perine VanScoy, the great granddaughter of this Isaac Perine (b. 1808). I have gathered a lot of information about the Subject brothers but like others can find no definite link to their parents. I have a tentative link that follows a Perine family in Salem, VA (maybe the one near Roanoke or the one in present Harrison Co., WV) to CT and then back to Harrison Co. However, this may be a total invention on my part. I would appreciate any comments on this mystery.
