Hello,

I am hoping you are the Kelly Morgan that posted the following:

http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?josina::m...
Benjamin Thomas Morgan Sr b. 31 Oct 1782 PA d. 21 Feb 1871 Athens OH
m. 1st Josina Pedegrew/Bedegrew b. ca 1782 Wood, OH dau of John and Elisabeth Pettigrew d. What was your source for this?

If her father was named John then I have a good lead on him in OH.

Josina's parents have been elusive, so I would appreciate what help you can give.
This David Pettigrew is the name of my cousin, uncle, and grandfather. His mother was Sarah Penfold Pettigrew and father was John. Mary Gillespie was his grandmother. He had three sisters, Phoebe (usually spelled Phebe), Sarah (Sadie), and another whose name escapes me now! Phebe lived to be 96 and my grandfather to be 89. They were all born in Paterson.

I don't know Becky's brother's names. Her husband was my g g grandfather Moses Waddell Pettigrew. Moses was born SC about 1806. They went to Shawneetown IL in 1809. Younger members went into Brown CO IL area later. I suspect the Evans' were from Wales as it is about the second or third most common name over there. Becky's father was James and her mother was Mary Morris. Her grandfather Evans was a rich Virginian. My email is rrpsfc@aol.com.
Richard Pettigrew
Alexandria, VA

do you know if she had brother's with the names of William, James and John?? If so her brother William is my ggg grandfather. I'm trying to fill in my family tree and this would help the verification. Her husband, Moses, is my other verification along with them(brother's & husband) moving to western Illinois around 1825.

thanks

chris sutton

"Revolutionary War Bounty Land Grants" by Lloyd DeWitt Bockstruck lists Lt. James Pettigrew of PA making several claims in 1785 and 1787. I'm going to research BLM and see if they are similiar to the Muskinghum claims made by Benjamin Morgan and Chandler Price. Chandler Price was a son-in-law of Jacob Morgan of Caernarvon, PA.
This could be the James Pettigrew born 25 Apr 1761 in County Armagh IR and buried in Springboro Cemetery, Warren Co,. OH. It does appear to be a rabbit hole, since he did have a grandaughter born in Montgomery CO, OH in 1808 named Josina. John Petticrew (Dauphin CO, PA) is also a suspect as is David Pedicrue. An even more likely canidate from the same clan is John Finley Petticrew, from the same clan but an early Ohio settler originally Ireland via Lancaster, PA.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~haingeneal...

Mr. Parks,
One has to anticipate that spelling conventions were not yet established by Noah Webster's dictionary and many were not consistently literate, but there were at least two revolutionary soldiers named Pettigrew in Pennsylvania: Williams and James. http://www.archive.org/stream/pennsylvaniaarch03penn/pennsyl...

There is a 1745 deed for land on Marsh Creek (Old Lancaster County- now Adams)in the name of James Pettigrew.
Contact Charles Weaver of Winston-Salem, NC, for more information.

I am not a descendant, but perhaps this info can help. Is your church in California?

Rev. J. D. Pettigrew might be Rev. Julius D. Pettigrew, Sr., born 1861 in Alabama. In the 1900 census he was listed as a preacher, in 1910 he was a magazine editor, in 1920 he was a minister. His children in 1910 (Elkhorn CA) were: Julius D. Jr., Ira D., Henry D., Evangeline L., Edith V., Esther M., Ruth D. His wife was Lottie A.

"Rev J D Pettigrew" and "Julius D. Pettigrew" bring up many hits on Google. One that has a picture of him is here:

Jet Feb 17, 1955
http://books.google.com/books?id=DrIDAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA26

That is all that I know that I can share.

Hi, I was interested to hear of the Witherspoon Chambersburg connection because my grandfather Milton Witherspoon Smith was from that area. I believe his father was Moses Smith and his mother Harriet (Witherspoon?). Milton was born about 1888. He was not, but his 2 children born in Mauch Chunk were exceptionally bright. Does any of this sound familiar? Thanks Pat Pry McCormick

Re: William Pettigrew b. SC married to Sally Rutherford b. Va around 1882

Well I finally was able to place William B Pettigrew. Matthew and Constance Pettigrew had a son Daniel H Pettigrew who married a Sallie and had a son William B Pettigrew! Daniel fought with the 15 South Carolina regiment in the war and died at Chimborazo hospital in Richmond VA. I found William B Pettigrew's marriage license in the Family Search Labs VA marriage records. He remarried after his first wife died in Bristol VA. He gave his parent's names on the license as Daniel and Sallie. So going back to the Yarborough connection..Sallie who was Daniel's widow remarried John Yarborough! Then by 1900 she had died but her husband was raising the Grandchildren! It's a little convoluted but That's how it all worked out!!!

I am looking for information on a man who called himself "Happy" Pettigrew. I am in serious doubt that his real name was "Happy", but it is said that when he was divorced in Reno, Nevada, "Happy Pettigrew" was on the papers. (1946-1948)

I have not been able to find him in the Census or SSDI.

All the information I have on him is ha *may* have been born around 1905, and he died in Erie, PA in the 1960's. He had a brother named Ernest Pettigrew, who was said to stay in the Charleston, WV area. Happy's wife (until the divorce) was "Ruby".

His children were supposed to be "Bobby Eckard Pettigrew" and "Zelma Pettigrew Wolfe".

Any help at all on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

~Jeff Forloines

F. Bush, now president of the Gould Lines, when Mr. Bush was general manager of the Northwestern Improvement Company, was found dead in the garden back of his home today. He had been dead several hours, members of his family having gone to the town and surrounding hills when he was missed. Mr. Pettigrew came to Roslyn twenty-five year ago with Mr. Bush. At one time he had charge of the Missouri Pacific's coal properties in Missouri. Death was caused by apoplexy.

Re: Richard Pettigrew

We are likely distant cousins, but it is not through the Richard Franklin Pettigrew ancestral line. There is no connection, in America at least, between the RF Pettigrew line, which goes back to VT, and that of the Pettigrews/crews of Rockbridge Co. VA, where Washington Pettigrew was born in 1801. His name may have been George Washington, but I have mostly seen it as Washington. (See my notes below, which I posted on another thread.) He was the father of your George Washington Pettigrew, b. 1830-31.

I have been researching the Rockbridge Co. VA Petticrews/grews for many years and can help you with your questions. The immigrant James Petti/ycrew came to Lancaster Co. PA (the part which later became Dauphin Co.), probably from Ulster, Ireland, by the mid 1750s. He and his family moved to Rockbridge Co. VA about 1793-4, where he died in 1798-9. His sons were William, John, Robert, James Jr., and Samuel, and one daughter Elizabeth. His wife was Jean Ainsworth, who died in VA about 1810.

Let me know if I can help you further.

Bev

----------

There is controversy surrounding this Pettigrew [GW, b. 1801], including whether he was ever named George. His marriage bond is signed Washington Pettygrew and he appears in the following censuses as Washington:

1830 Rockbridge Co. VA
1840 Greene Co. OH
1850 Madison Co. IN
1860 Madison Co. IN

and also on his gravestone:

PETTIGREW, WASHINGTON 75Y. 10M. 27D. SEP. 28, 1877 BEECH GROVE

See it here:
http://www.cemeteries-madison-co-in.com/beech_grove.htm

Whether the gravestone reads Pettigrew or Petticrew is also disputed.

What is known for sure is that Washington Pettigrew was NOT a son of John Finley Petticrew, whose children are all known. John Finley and his family left Rockbridge Co. VA about 1806, and Washington appears there on the 1830 census.

Who is Washington's father is another controversy. The two brothers who were old enough were William and John. John married Mary Ward in Dauphin Co. PA. He died intestate in VA in 1830, but when Mary's estate was probated in 1856, Washington was not mentioned, so it is doubtful that Washington was John's son.

I believe Washington was son of William and Isabella. Since it is unknown where William died, in VA or OH or elsewhere, and no will is available, it can't be known exactly who his children were. Only two are documented. One is Jane who married David Parsons in 1817; David was the brother of Washington's wife Mary. The other is my ancestor James who was born to William in Dauphin Co. PA in 1790/1.

I have done calculations on the 1800-1820 census records for William in Rockbridge Co., to try to determine his children, and Washington's 1801 birth fits well within the age groups of male children.

I am a descendant of this William, so if Washington was his son, then we have a common ancestor.

I would welcome comments on any points I made here, if anyone can offer any clarification.

Bev

Yes, I have his parents and grandparents but can't get back past them. However, I do have the information on his siblings and their descendants and his father's siblings and their descendants for a few generations. Some of the people in this family live in thios town where I live. I am trying to research back to connect with this line because my paternal grandmother was a Pettigrew through George Washington Pettigrew, son of George Washington Pettigrew. Grandma, Amanda M Pettigrew was born in Indiana, married Joseph Henry Ottinger there and moved to Batavia, Illinois where they both died and are buried. I have heard that before Indiana the family lived in Pennsylvania and Tennessee.

Every Ebenezer Pettigrew that I have found anywhere in the US at anytime has been traceable to the Abbeville SC Petigrews, NOT the Virginia branch.

The Abbeville Pettigrews, starting with James and Mary Cochran Pettigrew, arrived in Delaware c. 1740. Their children who survived to marriage were:
Martha (married John Witherspoon)
John
James
Charles
Mary (marrried John Verner)
George
Jean/Jane (married Stephen Tilly)
Ebenezer
William

I have MUCH information about this branch of Pettigrews; please send a message if you'd like to know more.

The former Senator Richard Franklin Pettigrew was a New England Pettigrew, who I think was born in Ludlow, Vermont. I believe these were originally Scottish Pettigrew's.

I think GWP usually went by his middle name as was common in the early years. He probably used it to the extent that it was thought that Washington was his real first name.

My g g g grandfather was a James Montgomery Pettigrew who always went by his middle name of Montgomery. For one thing his father was also a James, so the middle name usage clarified him as to which Pettigrew he was in his line.
Many erroneously thought his real first name was Montgomery.

Was the first Congressman from South Dakota. Quite a story. Buuilt a mill and a dam. When investors came he broke the dam so the water pressure looked better. Investors bought it. The city of Sioux Falls grew from this ploy.

There is controversy surrounding this Pettigrew, including whether he was ever named George. His marriage bond is signed Washington Pettygrew and he appears in the following censuses as Washington:

1830 Rockbridge Co. VA
1840 Greene Co. OH
1850 Madison Co. IN
1860 Madison Co. IN

and also on his gravestone:

PETTIGREW, WASHINGTON 75Y. 10M. 27D. SEP. 28, 1877 BEECH GROVE

See it here:
http://www.cemeteries-madison-co-in.com/beech_grove.htm

Whether the gravestone reads Pettigrew or Petticrew is also disputed.

What is known for sure is that Washington Pettigrew was NOT a son of John Finley Petticrew, whose children are well-known.

Bev

Some of the 1801 George W. Pettigrew branch used to spell their name Petticrew. Perhaps they came over to America and some changed the spelling. But many Pettigrew's/ Petticrew's were from northern Ireland. I believe GWP's branch lived in Rockbridge County, VA early on prior to migrating northward and to the west.
