Nehemiah Pettit

Hello all Pettits! I am looking for any information regarding Nehemiah Pettit, b. 1750 in Somerset, PA and d. 1824 Greene, TN. I am specifically looking for the following:

1. information regarding who his parents or siblings are. Note: there is a Nehemiah Pettit b. 1788 who I believe is clouding the issue, might be a nephew of Nehemiah b. 1750. Regardless, the second Nehemiah's origins are unknown as well, so finding info on one will help find the other.

2. I think that my Neheimiah may be related to Thomas Pettit b. abt 1614 in Essex, arriving in Boston abt. 1634 who then married Christian Melloes. This information was gathered from The Genealogy of the Pettit Families in America, where it states that this line has not been carried out in that research. If you have any information about Pettit that arrived in TN, KY from MA or PA in the 1700's and early 1800's that would be helpful as well.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Looking for info on her. She is on a 1851 Canadian census (spelling there was Sphornia A) under a Martin Pettit 32, Eliza Pettit 32. Other children listed were: Burton J, 11, William O 10, margaret A 8, and John J 6.

Martin and Eliza would have been both 14 years old when she was born....makes me wonder if she was a "niece" living with them, since the next child is 7 years later?

I know there are a few other "Sophronioa's" but they come at later dates.

Can any one help?

Thanks,
Karen
To answer you question more directly, I too am trying to find good information on William H. Pettit's parents. Here there seems to be a great amount of confusion among fellow amateur genealogists. Some show his death in MO, and this is based on a land purchase record dating to 1842 in MO, some suggest his parents were John Padgett and Jane Easton, others suggest Andrew Pettit. Further digging indicates that there was another William H. Pettit born in NY and another born in England. I believe it is one of these two that are creating the confusion, as it is unlikely our common ancestor spent any time in MO, when all census records and family accounts place him in VA and IL only.
If yo have found any hard information since posting this message all those years ago, I would love to compare notes.

Re: William H. Pettit

I believe that part of the account is correct. I have in my hand, B & O Railroad employee cards for E.W. Pettit. from 1909 thru 1927 given to me by my grandmother Sharon Lee Aslaksen, his grand daughter by Maxine L. Pettit (1915). And I have found census records that confirm that Charles L. was in fact his father, and Ada was his mother. However, the census records for 1900 indicate that Charles L. (1860) had four (4) children, Ernest William (1885), Harry L. (1883) George (1889) and Minnie (1887). There is no mention of a child by the name of James William.

This is also the case in the 1870 census record I have reviewed. Finally, that same census from 1870 does not indicate that William H. Had another son named William. He had seven (7) children, James W. (1845), Lydia M. (1847), Henry H. (1848), Mary E. (1851), Virginia E. (1858), Charles L. (1860) and Emma J. (1863). The census record is from Luray, Page Co., VA dated 8/2/1870.

Perhaps, what has happened is that James W. is in this case referring to Charles L.'s brother not son. I have seen this happen on a few occasions when all the information is not complete. As stated by DSB 1988 death records confirm her testimony about Sidney Ann Weakley.

I hope this helps and I am more than happy to share any information. I would love to hear more about the Suthard family if you are willing.

Have you found any Pettit/Petty's in your family history? Just wondering. I have an ancestor that changed the spelling of his name when he left Kansas for Oregon. Could be because he was already married. I've been looking and found that the railroad could have had something to do with it. If they worked on the railroad they would have moved with it. Good Luck

You might want to look into Adam Pettit who married Mary Shourds. They where in Little Egg Harbor about that time and COULD be related. The age of your Ephriam COULD place him as a late child or a grandkid of one of their first children. The bad thing is that this line has not been researched well. Most people think Jonathan Pettit married Mary Shourds but the record says Jonathan Pettit wittness, Adam Pettit the groom.

If you have any more questions just reply to this post and I will try to get back to you.

If you find anything on these Pettit's or yours (if not the same family) let me know. I am trying to piece together a tree for the Little Egg Harbor Pettit's. So let me know!!!

I would like to share information with anyone researching the John and Catherine Pettit line. They were in NYC around 1800, by 1819 they are in Cincinnati, OH. John was born in NJ, that info from early Cincy city directory. Catherine's maiden name may have been HAYS. Their daughters married into LAWYER, REED and BROOKS families. I have lots of info in Cinci. Hope to hear from someone.

Wish I could help you out, but I can't. Census for Abner say his parents were born in NY. That's all I know about them. Since Abner was born in Saratoga County, NY in 1821, one could assume his parents must have lived there about that time. I have looked at census for Saratoga County, NY in 1820 and found a list of possibilities.

Abner married and lived in Concord, Erie Co, NY and very nearby in Ashford, Cattaraugus Co, NY. I have record of him there from 1850-death. All his kids were born there except the one child previously mentioned. So I'm trying to follow that lead to hopefully find more.

Can you give any more specifics as to where the family parents were born? I have Pettit ancestors who moved from Greene/Washington Counties PA to Athens and Meigs County Ohio around 1846. They were David & Eliza Brown Pettit. There are a lot of Pettit families in Ohio. Giving names, birth locations (just state as you said you don't know where specifically), and where in NY they moved would be helpful. If we can view them on census records I might be able to offer some advice.

Do you have a Pettit family living in Ohio in 1844?? If so, I want to correspond with you. I have a Pettit family member that was born in Ohio (don't know where) in 1844. Before and after her birth, her Pettit family lives in New York. Why did the family travel to Ohio where she was born? They aren't from there, they didn't stay. Ohio apparently didn't have birth records then. I have searched online for her obit, or newspaper article to try to get more info. I'm betting that some family connection brought them to Ohio. Maybe a family member died? Any help would be appreciated. Do you know of any newspaper articles back then that might mention the NY family coming for a visit and having a baby? Or maybe a church record?

I did have a mtDNA test sample analyzed by Family Tree. i found my Haplogroup is "W" which i think is traced back to Asia 65,000 years ago. Kind of broad and boring if you ask me.

Thomas, John and Anne: Hugenot or English Line

I think its safe to say that they came to America in 1630. In researching further back from their father Henri there appears to be some that say their ancestors were Hugenot and had fled France and were in England a short time. The majority seem to say that they were of a long line that was well established in England. Can anyone weigh in on this? Thanks Kevin Pettit

Just wondered if you have found any more information on James and Catherine Pettit since the posting you made in 2002. We are trying to track them as well.....2 ancestors of ours were living with them in the 1850 census and we think the 2 ancestors (Louisa Sprag, 17, and her brother, Joseph Sprag, 9) may have been related to James & Catherine.

Also, would you know if Mahlon Pettit of the Cass/White Co., IN, area was related to James & Catherine? Mahlon was born in New Jersey in 1832 and died in White Co., IN, in 1904. He married the above-mentioned Louisa Sprag/Sprague in 1853. Thanks.

Brenda,

That is very nice of you. A few of us descendants have been to Cattaraugus, in Little Valley, and the cemeteries. I think we know most of what can be found there. Unless you think this researcher could scour the surrounding area churches and newspapers? That might be helpful. Abner seems to have lived/worked near the northern border of Catt. and Erie counties, near Concord (Erie) and Ashford (Catt.). So it might require them to go into Erie County. You know what, give me her info and I'll contact her, just to see what she says. Thanks!

audrap@sbcglobal.net

I think that it's going to require an in-person search at churches. Which ones? No idea. First Baptist in Springville burned, and sent me what little they had, which was nothing about him.

Or in-person searches of all 62 counties of wills and land records to find something maybe passed down to him.

I'm thinking maybe he's an orphan.
I do not know of the Ralph Pettit born in 1897; however, I am trying to find Ralph Pettit, or petit for a long time. He should be 64 or 65 now. We met in Chicago in 1978. I believe he is from North Carolina, or S.Carolina, I live in Knoxville,TN, and would like to know if he is a relative of yours. I would really like to see Ralph; as a matter fact, it seems he may have lived here because it seems I have seen him; however, it did not register at the time(s). Robin Terry Powers

I can't help you with your exact Pettit names, but some of the Pettit families were loyalist or were Quakers, and simply didn't want to take sides in the Revolutionary War with the England. They were subjected to abuse from both the colonist and the British, and some actually had their lands taken away. From about 1770 to about 1800, several moved to Canada from New Jersey, New York, and other points. I would suggest that you do some research on the families of Nathanial Pettit of NY & NJ.
