I am looking for information on a James Henry Pettitt. He was married to Elizabeth Rowbotham (married in England around 1878ish). They had about 5 children...James Edward being the eldest. James Henry was a solider in (I assume) the British Army...does anyone know where and when he was born and died and who his parents were? I can't seem to find anything on his birth or death.
Thank you.

Hi sageandparsley,

This reply has taken me a while. Sorry. Yes we do have a connection. My James Pettitt's grandfather was William Pettitt, a coal dealer of Manchester. James' father was another James, born about 1818. This James had a brother, William Henry Pettitt, another son of the coal dealer. Edward Smallwood Pettitt was the son of William Henry Pettitt. I believe that William, the coal dealer had another son, Joseph and a daughter, Emma. Emma married Stephen Whittaker in 1837. I think that Joseph was a half-brother. I would love to hear from you again. So sorry for such a long delay in replying.

Does anybody know the story of James being a slave trader, going to Brazil with his brother & cousin & never returning home? Family legend says they all met their demise at the hands of cannibals. Does this sound like somebody's family? James is my GGGGandfather.
Thanks for your email,it seems as if I can make some more progress on Pettitt family history.
There are numerous Claydons in Wickhambrook.By a coincidence I went to the 80th Birtday Party for Peggy Claydon who is Alice's daughter.I learned that she had visited Canada in the 1990s and met her cousins.
I have the British censuses which have details of the Pettitt household from 1881-1911. I will send you copies.
I have also details of the larger Pettitt family which I obtained, but need to dig out.
I would be most interested to find out about the Canadian side of the family if you can help out.
I have some fragments such as an Edgeley marrying a sister, etc.
I will amend my profile.
Good to hear from you and be able to transfer further information
Best Wishes
Mike
Well Michael I think that we are talking about the same people from the description you are giving me. Is there anything specific you want to know?

Where does this Claydon family member live?

Anyway about 10 years ago I gathered what I could on the family members who stayed in Canada but became frustrated with the little info available to me at the time on the family in England except for a descendant of Alice, one of Bernard's sister who lives in Wickhambrook. I am now trying to find out more on those ancestors. The names of Bernard and Harry's parents were Harry Charles Pettitt and Elizabeth Reeve. This Harry Charles had 2 brothers Ralph and George. Do you have any means to check this out?

I would appreciate it if you could help me with that end whether you have the info or know someone who does.

Could you add your e-mail to your profile so we could correspond directly?

Thank you.

M

Hi,
I've just seen your posting about Percy Pettitt. I believe he may be linked to my family (his grandfather was Edward Pettitt my gt gt gt grandfather who married Mary York in 1820 in Warbleton)).
My e mail address is jim.pettitt1@tesco.net

Jim

My g-g-grandfather was Henry "Percy" Pettitt. He was an engine driver at a brewery. Born Walberton, Sussex, abt 1853. Married Harriett Brook-Foster, born Walberton, Sussex, about 1853. Children were; George Pettitt, born Iden, Sussex, abt 1871. Albert Edward Pettitt (my g-grandfather) born Tonbridge, Kent in 1876. Annie Pettitt born Tonbridge, Kent, abt 1878. Nellie Pettitt born Tonbridge, Kent, abt 1881.
I know for a fact that there was a sister named Edith. She was in Canada for awhile with my g-grandfather Albert . I do not know when and where she was born. I presume Tonbridge. It seems the family never moved, but I could be wrong. I have reason to believe other children were: Emily, Molly, Julia, Mary, and Herbert. Herbert was a twin. The other baby died. Herbert was born in 1897. He was killed at Gallipoli during the war on January 03, 1916. He is burried at Pieta Military Cemetery. I do not know when or where the other children were born

Pettitt family that emmigrated to Vancouver, BC?

My father thinks that his aunt, after leaving his uncle, resettled from London, UK, to Vancouver in British Columbia.

She was Sarah Eliza Pettitt nee Burrows, and the three children that went with her were Albert, Florrie and Bertie Pettitt (born 1893, 1895 and 1900).

Their father was Edwin Pettitt, and two elder siblings remained in the UK - Edwin and Lillian.

I'd be happy to hear of the Canadian connection.

Ray

I can't remember if I sent these to you or if I got them after we were in touch.

There is one photo of Andrew and Lula alone and one of them with children, Dutch, William Henry, Elisha and Clyde. It was taken around 1910.

JO

John Thomas Pettitt/Fairfax County, Virginia

Hi,

I am researching the Pettitt family in the Fairfax County, Virginia area.

John Thomas Pettitt is my husband's 3rd great-grandfather.

I haven't been able to find anything on his parents and/or any siblings.

John was born Jan 18 1828 in Fairfax County, Virginia. He married Catherine Virginia Kidwell Dec 19 1849 in Fairfax. They had three daughters: Madge Cree Pettitt (my husband's great-grandmother who married John Edward Mitchell and William Harrison Thompson), Mary E Pettitt, and Ann V Pettitt. John served as a Private in the Confederate Army, 17th Virginia Infantry, Company D. He died on Oct 15 1917. His life's occupation was as a blacksmith or cooper.

My father-in-law attended Madge's funeral when he was a very young boy and insists that she looked very much American Indian. I know that family lore has Indian blood in the line somewhere...I also know that the surname Pettitt is a popular "Indian" surname. Also, Madge had the middle name of Cree - which sure sounds American Indian to me.

Thanks for your help.

First four were born in Kentshire England and the rest in Pittsford, NY. I have written down that her father was Charles, but haven't investigated that yet.
Michelle

Emma Pettitt - Leicestershire, UK

I am trying to find information about Emma Pettitt who was my mother's mother.

She was married to Cyril Howen, although the marriage did not last and had 2 daughters: Rosemary (who died aged 5) and my mother, June Valerie.

If anyone knows this name or family I would be really interested in building a mutual family tree.

Thanks.

I'm not real sure. None of those names ring a bell. Bernard's fater was suppose to be Joe Pettitt. They did come from Mo. via New york I think. Bernard married a Minnie Roberson (Robertson) from Mo.
