Hello,

Thanks for your message. My 3rd Great Grandfather's name was a George Petty as well. He is listed as living in Ballisnahyny, County Mayo on the marriage record of my 2nd Great Grandfather, William Petty.

By any chance, do you have the actual marriage certificate of Dominic Petty? If so, it should state their residence at the time of the marriage. It should also list the names of witnesses which sometimes can be siblings.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi there
I have been researching my GR GR Grandfather Dominic Gaynard Petty. His father was George Petty and we believe they came from Co Mayo. He married Isabella Sairs in 1850, but the marriage certificate only shows that they were of full age. they emigrated to Australia with the 46th Regiment around 1854 and then came to NZ with the 4th Waikato Militia and he died in 1867. That is all the information that I have on him and I would love to be able to trace him back futher.

Wm. C. PETTY's #2 wife, Valeria

Hello!

Hoping someone has info on Wm. C's #2 wife Valeria or Valeriet or Ann (as she is listed in the 1860 c). I believe I descend from her daughter, Mary, born before Valeria married Wm. C.

I've not found a marriage record for Wm. C. and Valeria.

I have seen her name as:
Vibriet Hans or Haus (1850 living with PETTY and #1 wife);
V. Van Hese (1854 birth of son, Charles);
Veleret Herse (1855 birth of dau, Amanda);
Ann (1860);
HIRST (mar. of daughter 1865);
Mrs. V.A. PETTY, mother's name Lowery (her 1871 d. rec);
Vyleriet Lowry (1943 death cert of Amanda);
and the best one of all:
Delorous Hume (death cert of son Wm).

Mary, daughter of 'all of the above'! marries in 1865 as Mary HIRST. She had 4 children, only one lived to adulthood. She dies in 1895 without fanfare. I've not found a death cert or record for her. There might be a mention in a newspaper, but I've been unble to find it. She is buried in an unmarked plot on the PETTY lot in Highland.

Any suggestions or information will be accepted with a gratitude known only to those who actually have this great etc grandmother...and are about to go nuts trying to figure her out!

Thank you very much!
jamie in southern CA

I am looking for anyone who may be researching the Petty surname from County Mayo, Ireland and the surrounding area. My Great Grandmother, Elizabeth (Eliza) Petty, was born in 1875 in Cong, Mayo to William Petty and Margaret (Burke) Petty. She immigrated to the United States in 1896, settled in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, and became Elizabeth Coderre (Petty).

Her parents, William Petty (Ballinrobe, County Mayo) and Margaret Burke (County Galway) were married in Headford, County Galway, Ireland in 1858. William Petty's father was George Petty. Margaret Burke's father was James Burke.

My Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Petty, had siblings from Cong, Mayo born to William Petty and Margaret Burke. Here is the information I have thus far.
John Petty, born 1864
Ellen petty, born 1866
Margaret Petty, born 1870
Mary Petty, born 1873 (Nicknamed Mamie, married a Tenian)
Susan Petty, born 1877 (arrived in the US in 1900, married a man named John)
Kate, birth date unknown

I am hoping to connect with anyone who may have a connection with any of these names. Thank you.

Hi, Maree,

I'm glad to hear from you again. My grandson is related to the Petty family. I'm also having trouble tracing Thomas since I do not live near Spartanburg. I believe he was born in 1835 and died in the Civil War, though I don't find any records of his death (on-line, that is). I have found he served in three different companies for North Carolina and he is listed in teh 1850 and 1860 censuses. I have less information on his wife, Lovicia, maiden name unknown. How did you find her name was Dillard?

Charlotte

Thanks for getting back with me. No, I do not know Hamlet's middle name. Yes, Sarah Vicie Petty Waters is my grandmother. She is buried in Greer, SC, at the town cemetery. Her parents, Hamlet and Nancy, are buried in Spartanburg, SC, at Liberty United Methodist Church. Hamlet's tombstone states he was born in 1856 and died in 1896. I believe his father was Thomas Petty, born 1835 and his mother was Luvisa Dillard, born 1829. All of them are born in Spartanburg.

I hit a dead-end tracing Thomas Petty and his ancestry on the Petty side, but I think I have lots of infomation about his mother's ancestry.

Are you related to Hamlet? How might we be connected?

Look forward to hearing from you.....

Maree

Hi, mareewaters,

My only information on Hamlet Petty is that he was born 1856 in SC. My source is the 1860 census. Do you know if he had a middle name? I noticed on findagrave.com Sarah V. Petty Waters is buried in Greenville County, CS. Is that your grandmother?

I hope that we can tie these two families together. I have very little information on Hamlet and it is not a name you find very often.

This is exciting! My great grandfather was Hamlet Petty, born in 1856 and died in 1896 in Spartanburg County. He is buried with his wife Nancy at Liberty United Methodist Church on Highway 221. My grandmother, their oldest daughter, was Sarah Vicie Petty Waters. I noticed Hamlet's sister was also named Sarah. This must be the same family.

I'm afraid I know nothing about his ancestry, but hope we can help each other.

Looking for Sara/Sarah Petty

I have been searching for ten years for a child named Sara/Sarah Petty. Around the age of 8-10. Im not very well with all these searches and i only have an Image and the name to go by. Going by the image I have seen, she seems to have lived around the late 1800's to early 1900's. The dress she was wearing perhaps white and from around that time period. This search has been driving me absolutely insane. I believe Sara/Sarah maybe lived in Arkansas. Anyone who can help me with this would be GREATLY appreciated!

Benjamin W. Petty son of John Petty

Benjamin W Petty was born 2/24/1879 in Georgia and died 5/21/1917 in Cleveland, Bradley, Tennessee. According to his death record his mother's name was Mary Hall and his father's name was John Petty. I show Mary and her children listed on the 1880 census but not John. I would be interested in any information anyone can give me on Mary, John or any of the others in this line of Petty's. The other areas this particular family are living and have lived in is the Chattanooga, TN area and also Maryland.

Oops, I forgot a couple of things: I got Almira's birthdate from the Barbour Collection database on ancestry.com (Union, Tolland, CT vital records). It is a transcription of the original record, and I suppose it's possible that the birthdate 1796 was misconstrued as 1791 when transcribing the original record.

You also mentioned that you have a family bible record showing Almira's birth. If it's not too much of an inconvenience, could you send me the information contained within the record (or a scanned copy of the record) for my family file? I try to track the husbands, wives, and children of everyone in my family file, even if they are not direct ancestors. Thanks again for your time and consideration.

I haven't found anything yet. I am thinking of contacting the Dedham (or Norfolk Co., MA) probate to check the probate file for Ebenezer Petty. If there is a file, it may list the children.

I have been trying to determine for some time what became of Almira. I didn't have any record of whom she married and when. Thanks so much for the info. BTW, I'm descended from her younger sister Martia who married Dan Hills in 1811 in Paris, Oneida, New York.

Do you have any other info on Jonathan and Rebecca's other children? Specifically, who "Mrs. P.D. Loomis" is (a daughter who had their headstone placed in the cemetery. Is this Persia (Parsey) Delia Loomis, wife of Truman Loomis?)Thanks in advance for your consideration and reply.

Eve Petty of Wood Co. (later Wirt) West Virginia

Hello,

I am trying to piece together the background of my 3rd Great Grandmother Eve Petty who married my 3rd Great Grandfather Francis Dulin in 1843. I believe Petty is a married name, not her maiden name, but can't find sources one way or the other. On the 1840 federal census there is an Eve Petty in Wood Co shown as a head of household in the 20 - 49 age range, one girl under 5, one boy 5 - 9, one boy 10 - 14. Other people on the same page are a William Petty and men that I have seen some notes about that indicate are his sons. So my thinking is that she is a daughter in law of his , possibly a daughter but doubtful unless she decided to revert to her maiden name after a marriage that ended for whatever reason. In the 1850 census where she is then married to Francis, there is an 18 yr old William "Petta" living with them, so if those children living with her in 1840 were her own, she could have begun to use the Petty name for them also. The relationship to William is of course not stated.

Thanks for taking the time to read, hope someone has more info!

My grandfather was a Petty. Born in 1881. His name was Sam. His father was Andrew Richard (Dick)Petty. Sam married Spicie Strickland whose father was James Strickland from Joplin,Missouri. Sam & Spicie had 12 living children of whom my father Frank Petty was the oldest. They lived Kiowa County,Okla. when first married. Can any one add to this information about the Petty family?
