Nancy Hammer/Hamner married a Samuel Henry Childress several yrs. after Samuel Childers was living in Warren County, KY. Samuel & 1st wife had two children born in NC, Sarah & Elisha Childers & others in Warren Co. Sarah married Francis Rash & Elisha Married Juda/Judy Glass, (not the daughter of Hannah Barnhill/James Glass) although her father's name was James Glass. Have not found her mother's name. Samuel Childers purchased land next to the Meadows Family near Richardsville in Warren Co. in 1809. Also there was a Thomas Childras living nearby in 1810 Warren Co. Federal census.
Samuel Henry & Nancy Hammer Childress never left VA. He died before her, she left a will naming their children- they weren't ours. I am descended through Elisha & Juda Glass Childers. Have been trying to prove connections as I go & have definitely ruled out some.

Did your Alice Pew marry Samuel Hill in Williams County, Ohio? If so, I believe she is the daughter of Joseph Pew and Ruth Eddy. Joseph Pew and Ruth Eddy moved to Williams County, Ohio in 1836. Joseph is the only Pew I can find living in Williams County of the right age--and in Ohio, at that time, weddings had to occur in the county where the bride lived. I have identified 7 children belonging to this marriage so far.

I just noticed that if Jane Womack's parents were William Womack and Mary Jane Allen Womack, whick I have a ? by, then not only are William and Mary's son Richard Womack my 8th Great Grandfather and their daughter Ann Womack who married William or John Puckett, she is my 8th Great Grandmother, then also their daughter Jane Womack who married Henry Pew is my 9th Great Grandmother. So, three of William and Mary Womack's children are my ancestors.
Then me what information you need and how are you related to them.
Dianne

Pew/Pugh/Peugh DNA project

Hello Pugh researchers,
We would like to extend an invitation to join us in the Pugh surname project at Family Tree DNA www.familytreedna.com/public/Pugh. We now have about 100 participants in this project with variant spellings of the surname. Over the past several years we have made many exciting discoveries but there is still much to learn through this study. We now have a relatively good understanding as to how the various Pugh lines in America are related. DNA has told us that by the 1800s there were many distinct Pugh lines in America. We know that the Lewis Pugh line of Richmond County, Virginia is not related to the largely Quaker Pughs who settled in Pennsylvania or the early line of Francis Pugh of Virginia. There were other Pugh lines well established in America in the early 1700s but we need participants of these lines to join our project. Therefore, we are seeking your participation in this project if you are male and carry the Pugh surname. If you are female, you could ask a brother, uncle, or father to test for you who carries the Pugh surname.
Our biggest burning question remains how the well documented early Pennsylvania Pugh lines from the Welsh Track are related back in Wales. We are beginning to gain participants from the early Pennsylvania Pugh branches but we do not yet have an adequate database to draw any conclusions. We are very much in need of participants from the following branches:
•	James M. Pugh and Joan Price who were of the Quaker faith and were married at Radnor in 1692. James came to America in 1682. His father, Evan Pugh, did not come to America until 1698. This line of Pughs is very well documented and has branches that spread all across America. We currently have two participants from one of the southern branches but we need more participants, particularly from the northern branches.

•	David Pugh and Katherine Price who were also of the Quaker faith and married in Radnor in 1698. It is believed that David and James were brothers who married Price sisters. We have one known participant from this line and his DNA results vary substantially from the two James M. Pugh participants. It is critical to our research that we gain additional participants from this line.

•	Robert Pugh (or ap Hugh) and Sarah Evans who were married in Wales and arrived in America in 1698. While we have not come across primary source information, we have read that the couple practiced the Quaker faith in Wales but converted to the Church of England upon arrival in America. This line is most notably represented by the Hampshire County, Virginia Pughs. Maud Pugh and others have done a wonderful job of documenting this line. We have only one participant from this line but, from his results, we have learned that the Hampshire County Pughs are related to the Hancock County Pughs. We need additional participants to help us better define the relationship between these two lines.

•	Ellis Pugh and Sinah[--?--] left Wales in 1686 to come to America. Ellis was a Quaker preacher who was orphaned as a young boy in Wales. There is much written on him and his genealogy has been very well documented. However, a significant number of branches remain to be developed. This line is one of the most prominent in America but we do not yet have a single known participant in the Project. It has been suggested by many that Ellis and Robert were related. Branches of both lines seemed to migrate together. Needless to say, we need some participants from this line.

•	Hugh Pugh I and Helena Brink are first found in the Dutch Reformed Church records from the Minisink area of New York. They were married there in about 1785. While the couple had five sons, only the genealogy of Hugh Pugh II has been well documented. Hugh Pugh II and Elizabeth Davis arrived in Hancock (then Brooke) County, West Virginia in about 1800. Their son, David, laid out what became Pughtown (now New Manchester). We have one participant from this line and his DNA closely matches that of our Robert Pugh representative. This is another prominent line of Pughs that is in drastic need of additional participants.

•	Francis Pugh III and Pheribee Savage were both from the Northampton Area of Virginia. Francis was born there in about 1692. This Francis was the grandson of Francis Pugh I who came from Wales to Jamestown, Virginia in 1666 with brothers Daniel & Thomas. This line may include many of the Pughs found in early census data in Virginia and North Carolina. We currently have only one known participant of this line and are evaluating close DNA matches from two of our participants that have hit a brick wall. Without additional participants known to be of this line, we cannot yet come to a conclusion. As with the other lines, we need more participants.

•	Lewis Pugh and Ann[--?--] were married in Richmond County, Virginia in about 1703. Lewis came from Wales to the Colony of Virginia in 1695. The couple had eight children and descendants of his line have spread all across America. This is our biggest success story. Nearly half of our participants are representatives of this line. Due to the size of this group, we have been able to break the data down into subgroups to better define genetic markers that may indicate the individual sons or grandsons of this couple. What we are currently doing with this group serves as a model for what we hope to do with the other groups represented in our project. We still need more participants to join us as there are several members of this group who do not have a paper trail showing who they descend from.

While the specific goals and objectives for each of our participants may vary, we are all interested in gaining answers to genealogical questions that cannot be answered through conventional research. DNA is a very powerful tool and, when used in conjunction with paper trail evidence, it can provide us with answers to some very important questions. DNA can tell us whether or not two or more poorly documented Pugh families living in the same area at the same time are related. It can also bring surprising results, such as connecting two Pugh lines that were before believed to be unrelated!! We also have four African-American participants who learned through DNA testing that they descend from a Pugh ancestor even though they do not carry the Pugh surname. A number of our participants have hit a brick wall in the mid-1800s. For those participants, matching DNA with someone who can trace his lineage back to the 1700s or even 1600s is an incredible experience.
We are fortunate to have this new tool at our disposal. DNA can fill in some of the gaps in our paper trail research that can otherwise never be known. Events in American history have had a negative impact on records availability and our ability to follow some of the early Pugh lines. The French and Indian War (1756-1763) drove many settlers out of Virginia and on to North and South Carolina. After 1763, some settlers returned but many remained in the Carolinas and continued migrating southward and westward. Other Pugh branches spread throughout New England and Pennsylvania and later migrated westward as government land grants were made available after the Revolutionary War (1775-1783) and the War of 1812 (1812-1815). Records from this period become increasingly more available for genealogical researchers but the early migrations of the various Pugh lines in America present a challenge for many. The Civil War had a devastating impact on the records in the South. Many courthouses were burned to the ground and with them information has been lost forever. It is our hope that through the use of DNA analysis, the relationships among and origins of the many documented Pugh lines may be more clearly defined.
The results of our project is summarized on the Y RESULTS page of our website http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Pugh.
A Website/Mailing List has been created to discuss our various Pugh lines; our successes and our brickwalls. This is also an excellent place for people who are considering DNA testing to ask questions. We invite you to become part of the Yahoo Groups “Tracing Pugh Origins” at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Tracing_Pugh_Origins/.

Please contact me if you have any interest or questions about this project.

Daniela Moneta
Hi Agnes,

Sorry I never replied to that last mesage you sent me. For some reason I never got it. I've actually just found it while doing random searches on google.
I never knew Elizabeth had three children. I only have one for her "Janet" born 13 November 1861, reputed father Alexander Robb who was 45 at the time and Elizabeth only 22.
I only have Janet traced up to the 1881 census, where she is listed as her grandmother's daughter.
Who were her other two children? Very interesting about the New Zealand connection, I'll look into that.

Thanks, sorry again about the very, very, late reply.

Katrina

(I haven't found much information about them)

Here is my request: Can anyone help me with Richard Pew's parents? and, can anyone help me with information about the twins?

Although your posting is old, my ancestor is Caroline Carrie Pew (born May 14, 1862 in Salem and died in 1936). She is my great grandmother. She is buried in East View Cemetery in Salem. I heard there are several Pew families in Salem. We may not be related. Caroline's father was William B. Pew and her mother was Margaret E. Gallagher. They lived in the Bridgeton/Greenwich area of south jersey. My cousin by marriage, Danine Lodge, of Woodstown is also very active in geanology research.

Hi!

I am also related to this family, I'm descended from Elizabeth's brother and have been trying to trace all the members of this family who moved to Lanarkshire about 1840.

I'd really really love to hear from you! Where did you find Elizabeth's birth date? So far I've traced 7 children for Elizabeth and Michael, just using the censuses and haven't managed to get them any further forward.

Please get in touch,

regards,

Katrina

Scott,

I was at Wayne Co, Mo. court house before and they do have Wills there, but none of them are indexed and I didn't have the time to go through every book to see if my GGgrandfather LANE had a Will.
I hit a lot of Counties and some cemeteries in Mo.
That's the thing look for Wills and Deeds of all your line.
If your Samuel had a Will it might have names of parents or siblings you just never know. Plus learn the history of the County because it might be one County one year and later formed to make another County. Sometimes Wills will be filled in a different County.
Good Luck to all of us! :)

Theresa

Yes, thank you. I know about it. Benjamin Franklin Pew who died 27 Oct 1912 in Madison County, MO is my G G Grandfather, and William S Pew who died on 21 Aug 1913 also in Madison County, MO is his younger brother, and their death certificates are listed in the archives.

Thankyou for your interest. It would be fun to collaborate together to see where and when our ancestors become common. Right now, I'm am in the middle of compiling the census information i have into word, and research Sophia's family, they may lead me to Samuel's family, and also all their children. They may have something too. Also, I may need to find some willing participants to join the Y DNA Pugh/Pew Surname project to solidify lineage, which my father and his cousin have already done.

Talk to you later.

Scott

Sorry about that. I had to run for a bit, so i just copied and paste. Yes, that sounds like a good possibility that we could have common Pew/Pugh ancestors in NC. I haven't as yet found anthing on Samuel P Pew 1801,,, son's death certificate, Benjamin or William, says its a P and not an L like his youngest known son Samuel L Pew 1849, like who his parents were or where they were from.

I'm liking to think that his father's name was Samuel too, but I am uncertain. When I look at other lines, I don't see any Samuel's born at the right time to be him or his father, and when I do find a right date, it's not Samuel, but a William, for example, who's family came from PA and he was born in NC in 1800. Maybe his name was Samuel William Pew. lol. I was reading some family history lines on the message boards, and 80% of the Pugh/Pew's came PA and the earlier ones, 1666-1699, lets say, were Quakers. So, the odds are, numbers wise, that we came from the early Henry/James/John/David Pew/Pugh's in PA. But how to connect them is the question. I did read about a Samuel Pew in a will that had a brother named Samuel,,, but no information, just a mention. Didn't quit understand what it meant.

Anyway, if you need some more information, just email me and i'll send it to you.

scottwpugh@hotmail.com

Scott Pugh

My GGgrandmother known as Elzora PUGH b.abt.1875 Kentucky married William Henry LANE and they lived in Hiram, Cowan Township in Wayne County, Missouri also.
One of Elzora's sister named Rebecca lived in Fredericktown, Madison County, Missouri she was married 2nd to a MOORE. She was married 1st in Bollinger Co,MO. and married 2nd in 1899 Lowndes, Wayne County, Missouri.
Since your line came out of N.C. and my PUGH line seems to have come out of N.C. to TN. and then to KY. and then to MO.
I'm wondering if they might connect way back somewhere down the line.
Do you know the parents names of your Samuel PEW? or any names of his siblings?

Theresa

The area's I've seen them in or have connections to are the S.E. Counties. Two females married in New Madrid Co,MO. and they also lived in Wayne and Bollinger Counties in MO. I have a missing link! ;(
One obit show that her parents were a Charles and Mary PEW/PEW and then other info (hear say) thinks the father might have been a William.
Mccracken County, Kentucky is right next to Marshall Co,KY. and I can't find them there either on census. Only find them on census in 1900 Missouri.

Thank You,

Theresa theresagriffiths@iwon.com

Re: Patrick Mary Hardford Pew

Hi Mark,
I'm a descendant of James A Pew, son of Patrick & Mary Hardford Pew. James was a twin of George. Most of the Pew family moved to Green Bay area, then to Stephensville, Wisconsin and Winnebago but most of them then moved to Dakota territory in after 1881. James married Martha Ruddy in New York, moved to Stephensville. They had 9 children.Cletus, Calistus, Mahalia, Julia, Anna, James, Anna Verde, Mary Angela, Joseph, Albert Henry.

Calistus and John Carr squatted on land in South Dakota in 1881-82 going back to Wisconsin for the winters. John Married Julia Pew in 1885 at Stephensville, sister of Calistus and settled in Grant County, South Dakota, now known as Milbank, South Dakota. Julia and John Carr had 6 children. Elmer, Elinor, Frank (My Grandfather), Floyd, Matilda, Ethel. James Pew eventually migrated to Milbank. Cletus, Calistus and James farmed 10 miles NW of Milbank, SD. Julia and Mahalia married farmers in the area(Julia was my great grandmother).

Calistus married Mariette Manley, daughter of Henry Manley and Eliza Elkins, at Stephensville in 1888. Calistus died in LA, Calif. 3/28/1940. Mariette died in Minneapolis 9/14/1941 of cancer, buried in California next to her husband.

George E. Pew(James twin) married Nancy Ruddy, sister of Martha. They had 7 children: John, Emmett, Albert, Fred, Frank, James Henry, George. George and his family lived in Big Stone, SD

Patrick Heny, son of Mary Hardford and Patrick Pew, made his home in Wisconsin and married Catherine Tiernan in New York and had 4 children. Catherine died in Stephensville in 1858 and Patrick Henry remarried Alice Sloan three years later in Northport, Wisc. They lived in Stephensville and had 7 more children.

I have a lot more info on the Pew family. Too much to print. Hope this is helpful! What info can you share on Mary Hardford? Others? I do not have anything on her or Patrick. Thanks!!! BARB
