Ephraim Whitehead (great-great-great grandfather), had a son, George Washington Whitehead (great-great grandfather) and two daughters, Harriet (married PB Phelps) and Ellen Cecile. GW moved to Texas in 1831 with Stephen F. Austin's Colony, and later his 2 sons bought extensive ranch land between Del Rio, Texas and Sonora, Texas, which the family still ranches. I am looking for any connection to Harriet Whitehead Phelp's family from New Orleans.

James Harvey & Mary were my ggg grandpaents. I've been able to trace the Lucas line & many various branches back to at least the 1600s. Every one of them (so far) came from England, mostly in the late-1600s to early-to-mid-1700s. Sorry. It would've been pretty cool to be part Native American :).

I have a picture of his head stone with the dates, so I am pretty sure the dates to be correct (or close). My notes came originally from a women's college in Georgia back in the early to mid 50s (from my aunt as a school project). It stated he was born "somewhere" in Virginia. He was bound out for his mother's support and ran away when he was 16. His wife Theodoshia Graddy/Grady was from North Carolina. All of his children was born in Georgia.

John Ambrose Phelps of Montclair NJ abt 1870-1910?

Hi, I'm looking for information on John Phelps. My grandmother was his adopted child, but she was also related to him, she was his niece. Her mother was a Phelps. She died of TB and her husband at the time, a Toal, allowed his wife's brother & wife, a childless couple, to adopt that one remaining infant. [The wife's brother was John Ambrose Phelps of Montclair, NJ married to wife Amy Phelps.] I have a birth record I found on Ancestry.com of Amy Toal born October 14, 1998 [or 1999]. Can someone tell me where this record comes from? If I could see her birth certificate I could find out her birth mother and father's names, which would help me a lot. I have not been able to figure out how to find the original record. Thanks in advance. My grandmother is also named Amy Phelps after her adopted mother. She is said to resemble the Phelps family in physical form: Tall, stately bearing, calm demeanor, brown hair, blue eyes, prominent nose. Thanks so much, in advance. I think you. Lynn.
Phelps, Clinton G. (Goodard) 1866- ?

Parents: Whitcomb Phelps, MD and 1st of 2 wives- Lydia M. Luce.
Clinton was born in PA in June 1866 (per 1900 census) he appears first in the 1870 Federal Census in Kendallville Ward 3, Noble, Indiana. But not again until he is married living in Doniphan County, Kansas - where he is seen in several state census' as well as the 1900 census.

His father Whitcomb 1831-1905, marries his second wife Mary Bramble (different spellings include Bromblee...) by mid 1870's and appears in the 1880 census (Fort Wayne, Allen, Indiana (he is there for many years)) with his new wife and children, but, no Clinton -or his 2 siblings of mother Lydia- (those siblings) are Rose A., 1864, and Walter E., 1862.

I have attempted to find Clinton in the 1880 census, and post 1900 Federal/ state census' but still unable to find him. 1870- 1888 a mystery, 1900- ? a mystery. During the interim period 1880-1900 Clinton marries Mary Etta Anderson and has 7 children, Louis, Clinton A., Lawrence, McKinley, Elsie, Helen and Guy. Many of his children turn up in a orphanage (Old Soldiers Home) in Atchison, Kansas per KA state Census 1905-1915. Wife Mary Etta remarries and has youngest son Guy living in El Paso, Texas in the 1910 Federal Census.

My question: Did Clinton die? is so I can't find him. Does any one have further info that they might relate for me?
most sincerely
Walter McLeod wmcleod@mac.com

Mary, Hannah Baskel Phelps married a Phelps brother in England, then after immigrating to Mass., she married the other brother. Nicholas I believe, but anyway, they had a lot of trouble over Religion (Quaker?) and eventually moved to Perquimans County, North Carolina. Some of her (Phelps) decendants should still be living in the area. Contact the Perquimans Co. Historical Society for the full story on this Phelps family. They are not related to the Caswell Co., NC Phelps family, as proven by ydna testing done by FamilyTreeDNA. Good Luck, Marilyn's Dad Walt

I have been doing some research on my Phelps ancestors, and got back to James Phelps d. 1786 in Caswell county N.C. . What has helped a great deal was having ydna testing done. I had it done by familytreedna. There is a project connected to them called "Phelps World Wide Ydna project", or something similar. As I was reviewing some of the Phelps families in the Caswell county NC area, I recall that some of them moved to Kentucky, Mo., and Tenn. The Phelps lines from New England are not closely related (within a thousand years) to the Southern lines, but if you had either mt/dna or ydna (for direct line males with Phelps/Felps as a surname) testing, the people at familytreedna can tell you which line your ancestors are from. Caswell Co. NC is located in north central border of NC, and next to Halifax Co., Virginia. Sincerely, Marilyns dad, Walter Phel... P.S. You can reach FamilyTreeDNA at 1445 North Loop West, Suite 820, Houston, Texas 77008 or at Phone: (713) 868-1438
