LaVerne, Sorry I did not realize that you had posted several times.

Sherman & Bea were my grandparents. Most of the information that I have on my dad's side of the family are things that my Mom has told me about them. My Dad's family has never been real close, and I never had much contact with my Dad and the only thing he remembered was some trips back to Erick, and that the Phillip's were "strange". So any help and recolections that you can share with me would fill in alot of holes. You can also e-mail me at celtichearts2@aol.com.

Thank you
Lisa

Linda,
My name is Johnny Mize and your great grandmother Lizzie was my grandfather's sister. My grandfather Norman left my dad and his mother when my dad was only 7 years old. My dad spent some of the last years of his life going from cemetary to cemetary in Northern Georgia and North Carolina trying to find out what happened to his father. I finally tracked him down in Knoxville Tennessee where he died, but not before my father Woodrow passed. I found some information on my Mize relatives thru a woman who lived in Georgia who is a relative and she gave me a picture of your great grandmother Lizzie's father and her brother and it is posted on my Ancestry tree. If you are interested and would like to see it, I would be happy to give you an invite to my family tree if you give me an email address to send it to. I was wondering if you might have access to any pictures of your great grandmother's family, especially any of my grandfather Norman. It was nice to hear from a distant relative. I'm in Texas near Dallas now but I grew up in Walhalla SC. If you have information about the Mize family, I would like to hear about it. Thank you, Johnny Mize

***NOTE****

Further research leads me to believe my previous query for John Phillips b. 1881 was not born in England or Wales but in Newfoundland, Canada.

However, I am now looking for my Grandfather John Phillips' Great, Great...Grandfather who arrived in Newfoundland, Canada under let's say, peculiar circumstances...he would've been "picked/hired" to work for a Captain going to either Bermuda or Barbados but some kind of incident occurred and he somehow managed to gain passage and ended up in Newfoundland - that's as much of the "story" I can get.

If this sounds familiar to my fellow researchers, please contact me, thanks!!
Nancy,
Thank you. I have accumulated a lot of info on Wesley (was suspected of a Murder!). Have not given up on him - his name is listed in my baby book; however, grandma's sister's death certificate lists Riley Phillips. Have a lot of info on the three sisters now and am leaving for SC tomorrow to see if any of these leads can help. Was hoping to hear from some of Effie's family, none of which are known to me. Will try to get her obituary from Rockingham, NC on this trip. Last year I tried through phone calls, but that didn't work.
Am wishing that "Who Do You Think You Are" would contact me - they seem to be able to find anything!
Again, thanks for you input. I frequently ready posts from you.
Darlene Cline

Hi Darlene,

I tried looking up Wesley and Mary Phillips on Ancestry.com and discovered quite a few files posted on him there. Most of the files say his name was D. Wesley Phillips and that he was born in SC in 1848 and died in SC in 1895. I would try looking for a will or probate that might describe his children if I were you. I would not necessarily believe the researcher that told you Effie, Bettie and Lillie were not his children.

Some of the files posted on Ancestry.com indicate Wesley descended from Reuben Phillips of Cecil Co MD. If this is true, you belong to Phillips Family DNA Group 2. If you have a male Phillips relative who would agree to get tested, you could prove whether or not this is true. Here is a link to the lineage page for Group 2 on our independent website:

http://www.phillipsdnaproject.com/ylineage/pedigrees-by-fami...

Sincerely,
Nancy Kiser
Volunteer administrator
Phillips DNA Project

Thank you for all of your checking. I have most of the info on Lillian (my grandmother) and her sisters: Effie and Bettie. In fact I have both of the sisters a/o 1900 but nothing on G'ma until 1910. Have all of their husbands - each had 3 husbands, 6 children and 3 of them died. Found that G'ma had lost a child prior to Felton.
Have Aunt Effie's death certificate which lists Riley Phillips. Neither of the other 2 have parents listed; however, in my and my older sister's baby books either grandma or Mother listed the Parents as Mary and Wesley Phillips. Have been told by a researcher in the area that they we not children of Mary and Wesley - but why was it written down in 1943 and 1947???
Anyway, am leaving for SC Sunday. Hope to use some of the leads and see what I can find. Will drive to Rockingham if necessary to get Aunt Effie's obit. Have Aunt Betty's and that too presents a problem: they listed a brother - Ed GARDNER!!!
Think I'm starting to qualify for WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? Right now the answer is "Don't know".

Appreciate your response, will check out the links.

Darlene

Hi,

I don't know if these are the people that you are seeking info on, but if they are, here are two links to the burial info for a Sara Elizabeth "Bettie" Hasty and an Effie Quick Grant. The links give you the dates of birth and death and their place of burial.
yes, I do have a copy of her death certificate. There is a name for the father and that complicated things. I have names of their father and mother in my baby book and it is different than the one on her death certificate. Am unable to connect them with either name. The girls were orphaned when very little.

Thank you for the info on the SS#. I was not aware of this and will probably give it a try. Am going to SC next week and research some clues that I have come up with and will do that after I get home if no answers by then.

Thanks again!!
Darlene

No, sorry, I have no information on your family but have you gotten a death certificate? A DC would should have the info you need -- depending on how informed the informant was.

Did she have a Social Security Number#? If so you can order a copy of the SS application which is a document written in the applicant's own hand. This document also includes the names of parents.

http://genealogy.about.com/od/online_records/a/ss5_request.h...

My Grandmother was Lillian (Lillie) PHILLIPS Kirby Jordan. She lived in the Darlington, SC area most of her life. Effie and Grandma's sister was Aunt Betty (Sara Elizabeth) PHILLIPS Hasty who lived in the Camden SC area.
I am trying to find their parents. Don't even know their names. I have 2 possiblities but can't connect the girls to anyone. Apparently their parents died in the 1890's and since there is no 1890 census.....
Am in hopes that some of Aunt Effie's family has some clues that I don't have.

Do you know something?

Darlene

Most of the files at Ancestry.com say he died around 1928 in the state of Washington, but one file says he died 11 April 1910 in Tipp County, Indiana. The source cited for this is as follows:

Name: William S. Phillips
Date: 11 Apr 1910
Location: Tipp County
Age: 62 Yr
Gender: Male
Race: White
Source Location: Sheriffs Office
Source notes: The source of this record is the book S-14L on page 60 within the series produced by the Indiana Works Progress Administration.

You might want to obtain the death certificate of this William S. Phillips to see if he is your William Phillips. Death certificates frequently contain the names of the deceased person's parents.
