Hello Dave. All the family that I have traced was in Ontario, Canada, but that doesn't mean that we are not connected and that the extended family did not move elsewhere in Canada. I tend to stick to my direct line and not do all the children, uncles, aunts, cousins, etc. There is another researcher who's Philp family is in Canada as well, that I have not yet been able to connect to mine. Both of our families came from Cornwall, England.

You can email me at Lhugeback@netscape.net and I will be happy to share my Canadian and English line with you as well as put you in touch with the other researcher.

LeAnn

Philp-Knill wedding 1912 in CO

Appeared in the Nov. 29, 1912 edition of the Lafayette, Colorado newspaper:

"PHILP-KNILL WEDDING.
Miss Mabel Knill and Ernest Philp, residents of Lafayette, were united by the solemn bonds of matrimony on Saturday, November 23rd, in the City of Denver, before only a few of the relatives and friends.

The bride and groom remained in the Capital City until Monday morning, when they returned to their home in Lafayette, where they found the table spread with all the delicacies of the season. The house was filled with friends and neighbors to welcome the happy couple and also assist them in starting along the road that most of the visitors had trod or intend to travel. The small boys did not forget to call around and in their own small way helped to make things as lively as possible.

The neighbors kept coming in until 10 o’clock, p.m., and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves. By the way some of the young ladies about the age [?] score years and ten, were [dancing?] around the room with the young men, I thought they were carried back to their younger days.

The Lafayette Quartette, composed of the prettiest young ladies in town furnished songs and music for the happy throng. But in conclusion I will state that we all had a good time and the best wishes we can give them is that they may live the allotted time that is given to man without a wave of trouble in the sea of life in which they have just embarked.”

Note: Submitter not related. There were a few spots which were unclear in the microfilm as noted by brackets. Gravestones for several members of the Knill family may be viewed at coloradogravestones.org with Thomas M. Knill, Sr. (1859-1923) being the earliest.
Hope someone can use this!
Darlene
I was wondering if anyone has documentation for the middle name of Rebecca Philp. She married Duncan D McArthur in 1895. Her parents are Robert Philp and Catherine Foster.

I have that her name is Rebecca Jane Philp, but the 1880 US Census says Rebecca M. Philp. Also, a distant relative of mine says her headstone says Rebecca M. McArthur.

Does anyone know for sure?

Surnames: Philp. Lawson, Pahl, Harford
Brian, many thanks for your info which I will follow up. It does not surprise me that there is seemingly no birth record of my grandfather Charles. Family lore has it that the family lived in the bush and worked on creating some of the early roads in the Hutt Valley hills so it just may be a case of not getting around to it.
My grandmother, Fredrica Jane was the second daughter of Matilda Elisabeth Harford and John Peter Frederick Pahl being born about nine months after her father's tragic death in a storm.
Obviously you are aware that John A Lawson was Matilda's second husband - they had another seven children.
(Three Harford sisters married three Pahl brothers and there was a further union of the two families in the next generation.)
There is a very exhaustive family tree of the Harford family compiled by Lois Fawcett. I have a copy.
Regards
John

John, you may not be aware that the NZ BDM indexes are on line at https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/Home/
These show a marriage between Charles Philp and Jane Fredricka Lawson in 1905. Ordering this certificate will provide you with a wealth of information.
The birth indexes are available for biths more than 100 years ago, and the show children born to Jane and Charles: Ruby Eileen 1905; Olive Constance, 1907; Irene Lyla 1910.
There is no birth in NZ for Charles that fits your facts.
There is, however a marriage in 1885 between John Adelbert Lawson and there are births to Matilda under the surnames of Lawson and Pahl during the 1880's
I suggest that following these leads will tell you what you want to know.

Greetings Morice,
Thanks for your response. Lets hope we can resolve any mutual problems.
My mother, Irene Lyla Philp (b. 10.4.1910) was the third daughter of Charles Philp and Fredrica Jane Pahl.
Charles Philp was presumably born in NZ 28 April 1882 died 1967. William, his believed oldest brother was reputedly 15 years his senior, and again, believed to be born in Cornwall.
I am aware that there was at least one other related Philp family in Petone descended from a brother of Charles and William. The names known to me are Clarrie (Clarence?) and his son Lyn (Lyndon?) who became NZ Lightweight boxing champion in the fifties. Clarrie had a brother known to me only as Ginger. There was another known as Gordon who may or may not have been a brother of Clarrie.
I recall being told as a child, (pre 1945) that some of the family moved to Otahuhu, Auckland. The only name mentioned being "Darky" - it seems that nick names were popular
William married but his wife was admitted to an asylum at an early age. There was no issue.
Charles had four daughters, Ruby Eileen, Olive Constance, Irene Lyla and Laurel Edna. His only son Mervyn Charles produce three daughters. Laurel, my aunt is still alive at age 89 and now resides in Australia.
Regretably, at this stage I do know the names of Charles' parents, nor the date of their arrival in NZ.
I hope this info is of assistance to you, and that you might be able to return the favour. Kindest regards
John
I am sorry, but the Philp side of my family is really a mystery which I am unable to crack. It is interesting to hear that yours changed to Phelp ... I might have a look into that .... sorry that I am of no help.

My ggg grandfather was George Philp and he lived around London. One of his sons, William George born 1839, changed his surname to Phelps. Some of the family kept the name Philp.
I have found other Philp families in census records and wonder if there is a connection. I realize this is earlier than your inquiry but am hoping there is some connection to the families.
I would like to hear from you. Thanks in advance
