This is not my direct line, however I came across interesting reference to him in my research in this book published last year. The Protestant and International Huguenot Migration to Virginia by David E. Lambert.
Sir William owned many ships which he contracted out to the Government, two of which The William & Elizabeth, and The Nassau brought Huguenot refugees from England to Manikin town Virginia in 1700 & 1701.
Additional info about Sir William can be found in the calendar of treasury papers (regarding transportation) which lists what he was paid, what cargo was carried, ports of call, pirate attacks and when HM Customs impounded his vessels. brithistoryonline site.

See also A history of the County of Surrey Vol 4 by H.E. Malden re property he purchased there on the site of Merton Priory.
.
Hi Niki
I have been searching the Phippards for some time now. My Phippards were found in the late 1600s in Poole and while I have found many listings of Phippards in Langton Matravers and Swanage, I've not been able to make a link. The earliest I can get back too, through Wills/ Probates, is William (b. abt 1632, d. 1703 Poole, married to Hannah). He is the father of Sir William Phippard.

Do you know of any links between the two groups? I'm ver willing to share information.

Margaret Jones

Hi Rebecca,
I checked my emails today and saw that a message had come through from your dad. Wow i am a little shell shocked as my family have wanted to try and find your dad and his brother, (your uncle) for some time but did not know quite how to go about it, and not knowing if they wanted to be contacted. I spent most if not all of 2006 researching both the Linleys and the Phippards. My husband is in the Navy and away alot so i had a lot of time on my hands. I found a lot of interesting stuff. On the Linleys i got back to 1750, all of them from the Nottingham area. The Phippards all hail from Langton Matravers and Swanage. I even had some photographs of Phippards from early 1800's. My email address is Nykola@penstowe.fsnet.co.uk. I have a lot of info that i think will amaze you as it did me.
Kind regards
Niki

Hi Niki,

Don't know if you're still looking for information on this, but Dorothy May (my paternal grandmother) was Alfred R Phippard's daughter.

The 1911 Census shows that Dorothy lived with her parents (Alfred R, a stone mason, and Elizabeth), older brother, three older sisters, maternal grandmother and a lodger at Rochdale, Milton Road, Copnor, Portsmouth. I realise you probably have this information now, as your original message will have pre-dated the release of the 1911 Census, but thought I'd get in touch anyway.

Best wishes,

Rebecca

ps My Dad has sent you a message too. Until reading your messages, my Dad had no idea that his parents were cousins! It's been really interesting to hear about the family connections that I knew nothing about. Thank you.

When did Henry Phippard came to Australia?

He and his wife Ada had 7 children in Sydney between 1890 and 1906. So I guess that means he was born around 1860.

I can't find any earlier record of him in Australia, so I'm guessing he came across from England. Do any of you know of such a man?

Many thanks
(still in Sydney)

Info re below Tricia.

I am not researching my family history, but was researching for a short story I am writing. Coincidently I grew up in Poole and my grandmother's name was nee Honor Ashley Phippard Cartridge and after marriage she became Honor Ashley Phippard Henning. She told me that it was traditional in her family to give the middle names Ashley Phippard to girls. She did not carry on the tradition with her children. She was born and spent all her life in Poole, Dorset. She told me that she was from a fishing family. There was supposed to be some association with St. James' church, Market Street, Poole: A pew for the Phippard family. My grandmother died in the 1960s. I left Poole in the 1960s.

Hi, Many thanks for your email. I spent most of last year researching my family tree on my great grandmothers side the Phippards of Swanage. I found two other people on rootsweb connected to this particular branch of Phippards and from that managed to get a lot more information. My line of Phippards have been traced so far back to 1792. A George Phippard (Stonemason) (buried in Northbrook Cemetary in Swanage he married Mary Stevens 5/11/1816, they had 13 children, ten survived, Henry Phippard born 1827, Charles Phippard born 1821, Susan Phippard born 1836, Sarah Phippard born 1839, Eliza Phipppard born1832, Moses Phippard born 1835 (my 2 x great grandfather), Mary Phippard born 1826 and Anthony Phippard i do not have the names of the others. Eliza, Sarah and Moses above all went at some point to Portsmouth where they settled. Moses was a stonemason and lived at 100 & 102 Somers Rd Portsmouth where he had a stonemasons yard. He had ten children, one of whom was my great grandmother Eliza Grace Phippard. I have also had contact from a Louella Chesterman from rootsweb communication whose 2 x great grandfather would have been Charles Phippard, my 2x great grandfathers brother, and also a Richard Wiltshire whose 2 x great grandfather was Henry Phippard (another brother). I have tried to get back further from George Phippard, and think his parents might have been Joseph & Ann Phippard.

I also found a surname distribtion site, which i could'nt seem to find again, and i found what looked like the name Phippard existed in the 1600's in Swanage.
Regards
Niki

My wife and I have just returned from a short break in Dorset, and we visited the area of Kingston, Worth & Langton Matravers, Acton and Swanage. My wife Jacqueline is related via her paternal father to Margaret Ellen Tatchell born 1885 in Swanage( her grandmother) in turn Margarets Mother( her G/ Grandmother) was born Margaret Phippard in Worth in 1841, she married a George Tatchell a fisherman from Kingston, her sisters were Sebena and Emma born in Worth 1838 and 1846 respectivly, and brothers Joseph and John again born in Worth,1838 and 1834, the line goes back so far to their parents Jonathon and Elizabeth Phippard in 1806 both born in Worth.
Whilst in the area , Phippard is an old stonemason family, working in the quarries in the area. We met the curator of Langton Matravers museum , who knew the family and said they go back to 1392!!
Not sure if there is a family connection, look forward to your reply!
Peter Bingham

There is a George Phippard that i have found in my research who was born around 1850/60 but he was born in Portsmouth and they orginate from Swanage in Dorset. His Father was Moses Phippard (Stonemason). George was one of 9 children. Mostly the Phippards i am looking at came from Swanage/Langton Matravers and i have traced them back so far to my gggrandfather George Phippard born 1792 in Langton Matravers. Not sure if there is a connection. Was your george born in Maidstone?

I have also found in my research that there was a lot of Phippards in Swanage and it was quite a common name so there possibly could be distant connection.

My ggrandfather Moses Phippard was one of 10 children and from what i have found it was a very large family on the whole, most of them tended to be Stonemasons. I have found Grace Phippard (her name was actually Eliza Grace Phippard (she had called herself unofficially Grace which was the reason i could not find her.

Regards

Niki

Hi Niki,

Just doing a bit research myself and we had Phippards in the family. My great, great grandfather was George Edwin Phippard who I guess was born around 1850s. He married Annie Amelia Preston in 1883 and died in 1933. He had 9 kids the eldest of who was Rosa Grace who was my great grandmother.

Not sure whether this helps at all. They were all from Maidstone.

Matt

This is very late in the day to be replying to this post. However, William Phippard Kirkwood was my husbands great great grandfather. We don't know a vast amount except that in 1858 the family sailed on on White Swan to New Zealand and lived in Auckland where they had a brewery. His daughter Amelia married John Kirkpatrick in Auckland.

Hi,

Im not sure if you are still on this project of researching the fippards/phippards but i am in the process of researching mine. So far i have got back to 1835 on my mother's fathers side. ie 3 generations. Not sure what names you have in your tree, but mine originated it seems from Swanage, Dorset they were a family of stonemasons and lived lately ie 1860 onwards in somers rd, portsea. Their names are Moses Phippard and Emma Phippard nee Hurt.

I am currently totally stuck on the more recent past my ggrandfather and the elusive Grace Phippard born 1883? who was it seems the daughter of Moses however she is not listed as living with them and does not appear on any census. Only her married to my ggrandfather John Linley is listed.

I wondered if you could possibly let me know if perhaps maybe they might intertwine. Moses have about 10 children
Louisa, Emma, Charles, Frederick, George, Susan, Eliza, Grace? Annie & Alfred R.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards

Niki Carpenter

I am trying to trace my great grandmother Grace Phippard, she is not registered on any census. The only info we have is her marriage to my great Grandfather John Thomas Linley in 1907. I am very curious about the phippards as from the research i have done so far they all came from around the Dorset/Hampshire. On the 1901 census many are from Portsmouth. If anyone has any info ie where phippards originated from etc. I would be grateful.

niki

Hi Karen
My phippards are from Poole and don't seem to be related to the Swanage Phippards. Mine descend from William Phippard and Mary Asher Smith and he was the mayor, at one stage, of Poole. He had shipping and fishing interests and was linked to Newfoundland. There are a number of us researching the Phippard name and keep looking for a link between the Swanage and Poole Phippards.
I have a Sarah Phippard in my family but she married John Rawlinson and their daughter married Josiah Rolls. Their son James Rolls ended up in Australia which is where my family now is. There are lots of Phippards in USA and Canada.

At this stage I can't seem to help although if we shared some information maybe there would be a link.
Regards
Margaret Jones
Sydney, Australia

The St. Mary's Co. Historical Society has a book on the Cheseldine's and Gerard Families from St. Mary's County. I am sure they could help you. Also try posting to the St. Mary's County message board. There are some avid genealogists from St. Mary's that read it and provide lots of help info. Good Luck

P.S. my great-uncle is a desendant too (Elmer Cheseldine). He never had any children though.
