Hi. I do not have the surname Picken in my family tree; however, I am writing to ask you a couple questions about Stewarton. My grandfather, John Muirhead, lived in Stewarton for possibly 20 years (1890-1910). He attended Stewarton Public School (we have books which he received from this school). He also attended the Original Secession Church (we have books from his Sunday School). His father, James Muirhead, operated the Stewarton Hotel (wine spirits dealer). James Muirhead died in 1910 at the age of 61. In your research, could you please let me know if you have heard of the school, church or this hotel.

I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Sincerely,

Michael J.
Sorry to contact you on this forum, but I don't have a paid account for Ancestry and I wanted to contact you about your family tree, particularly John Frederick LOUVAR’s birth location - http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/11494836/person/-453514530 . You have the location of Chrudimsky Krieja Province, Bohemia Austria. I'm wondering what the source is for that information. I’m trying to figure out where to look for vital records for this family in the old country. Any help on this would be appreciated.

You can email me directly at Lhugeback@netscape.net if you like.

Thanks in advance,
LeAnn Hugeback
Your message was posted a long time ago, but is there any way you could share a copy of the book written by Sarah J. Picken Cohen? My father's brother's wife is a descendant. It wasn't easy to find the name of the wife of "Rabbi Cohen of Richmond, VA" as that is how all the genealogy notes refer to the father of Hester Ann Cohen who married Thomas Peters of Baltimore, MD and Washington, D.C. Where did you find your copy of Henry Luria -- or the book written by Mrs. Cohen? I hope hear from you.

Hi
I am a Belgian W.W.II researcher and I would like to come in touch with relatives of the late Capt. William Picken, M.C. of Kilmarnock. During W.W.II Capt. Picken served with the 6th Bn Royal Scots Fusiliers, 15th Scotish Inf. Div. On 16 Sept. 1944 he got killed near my home at Geel-Ten Aard, at the Meus-Scheldt canal. The day before, on 15 Sept., Field-Marshal Montgomery had paid a visit to the division at Ten Aard to present medals. Capt. W. Picken was presented the M.C. by Field-Marshal Bernard Montgomery himself for gallantry on the Normandy Battlefield. Sadly, one day later Capt. W. Picken was dead... I have some interesting information which I would like to share with his relatives. Any kind of help is most welcome ! Thank you !
Chris

She married George LOVIE in 1810 Whitechapel, St. Mary's.

Cora and George had the following children:

-William (b.1815)
-Alexander
-Barbara Elizabeth (b.1824)
-Cora Beiny (1829-1907)
-Ann Margaret (b.1833)
-Mary (b.1834)

The two eldest children were born in London, England, and the four daughters were born in Scotland.

I am most interested in ANY information about the ANCESTOR's of Cora Beiny Picken. Or George LOVIE her husband. I would also like to find out if Cora and George immigrated to Canada/USA like their children did.

Thanks!

Shannon

His son, Robert (b:12/7/1853 in Antrim County, Ireland) married Catherine Blair (b:11/28/1856 in Antrim County, Ireland).
The PACE-PICKEN ancestry I descend from was also from Wrockwardine (St. Peters), High Ercall (St.Michael-All Angels) Prees, Wellington, Sheriff Hales (adjacent to Lilleshall), Shifnal-Madeley. It seems PICKEN and many others of Shropshire migrated to Staffordshire, Cheshire and elsewhere,(abroad). What I do is collect entries from LDS batch files and put them together. This way I can sometimes see the migration and where my ancestors may have come from and gone. I checked for your immediate names and dates but wasn't successful. When this happens, the collection may tell it's own story. Write me at gtp3066@nexicom.net GordP

I am new to this family tree lark and have just found this website thanks to a kindly librarian in Cumnock who answered my plea of finding Pickens. I was actually looking for and found my GGGGGGrandfather Robert Currie born 1735 in Stewarton and discovered that his wife was Janet Picken born 1736. I also discovered that her parents were Andrew Picken born 1705 and Margaret Harper born 1709. They had 9 children listed but we have a Janet Picken born 1731 also for them. I can't find anymore on this Janet Picken so I assume that she must of died. The other children were :-

Agnes born 1732
John born 1733
Mary born 1734
Janet born 1736
Jean born 1738
Andrew born 1741
Margaret born 1743
Martha born 1745

I am interested to know if there are any descendents of the above apart from Andrew born 1741 as I think I have found a descendent who answered my plea from another website. If anyone recognises these names I would be very happy to hear from them. The family all stayed in Stewarton. Lesley

I have a Robert Picken born Shifnal about 1848. I believe his father to be William Picken and his mother Ann Sishton. I can't find a birth certificate for this Robert, so yet to establish if these are the correct parents. I have found this Robert, William and Ann and other children, on 1851- 1861 census returns in Lizard/Shifnal. I also have Robert Picken born 1848 on 1881 census-1901 census in Wrexham. Any connections?

My 6X grt/grandparents were GEORGE PACE & ELIZABETH PICKEN who married 30 Dec 1708 at Ranton, Staffordshire. Can't seem to find her amongst the hoard of PICKEN stuff I've collected from PR's etc. I've found the PICKEN name to be big in nearby CHEBSEY, GNOSALL, HAUGHTON, SEIGHFORD and connected to BROWN, COTTERELL, SLINN, REEVES and others. If your PICKEN ancestors are from this area of Staffordshire, west of the town of Stafford and even to SHIFNAL, Shropshire, please get in touch with me. I also see in the early US several PICKEN Counties in various states in the south, Also SUMNER name, also connected to PACE, Since all these names are connected in early English Midlands of Staffordshire Cheshire, Shropshire, I'm intrigued to find that early ancestor of these family surnames that emmigrated from these English Midlands counties.
Hello John,

It would seem that "your" John Picken married Elizabeth Muir on November 1 1806, having, amongst the ones they had, a Mary Anne Picken (sometimes referred to as Marrianne and even Marine) around 1817 (very approx). She married John Robert Gillies, also of Stewarton, on January 28th 1836 in Falkirk (seemingly), moving to England by around 1845. Bothe John and Mary were school teachers. They had several children, including Mary, in 1841 - John, in a845 (born in Turton Lancashire now) - Janet, 1849 - William, 1855 and Agnes in 1857.

I have all of the records from them to me and would be happy to share all of this with you, should you be interested.

Best of luck.
Peter Gillies

The Stewarton location is probably the birth location of the prior generation ... many were registered in the church in Kilmarnock, larger "parish" ... Thomas & Agnes married in a church in Kilmarnock per the IGI records at www.familysearch.org ... and that opened up an entire BOX of facts by finding that one marriage cert!!!

I'll have to pull the details, as they were not b in Kilmarnock. The move at that time was a simple move decision (and two of the many GRAHAM brothers moved to Kilmarnock, while not b there in later 1700's) as the town was "growing" much faster ... & work was available.

One of the many brothers of Jean was John & he was a schoolmaster in a surrounding town (and I have to find the notes) in the 1820-40's timeframe. He became a VERY WELL KNOWN school master and he was selected to move to London & I think he moved to London prior to her emigration with our Robert GRAHAM (GRIM on the IGI for their 1819 marriage) to NY in 1846.

Does this help? The towns are all so close. People have made a big deal about the five and ten miles on the boards, however, I have learned to draw a bigger circle on the map as they are no different from this day ... meet a gal in a nearby town & marry there ... and move to another area and have a family ... ah, the process!

Can I assist further? I need to slow down the projects for work & find the entire PICKEN list as I trust that would help you a lot!

Just checked my desktop "saves" & I have the PICKEN family crest & I have an entire PICKEN family line from Stewarton! From a John PICKEN.

My direct email: sterlinenterp@aol.com ... and identify PICKEN in the header as I work on marketing projects & receive a LOT of emails & I will forward the details to you!

Sheila
GRAHAM - PICKEN direct line

We are from the GRAHAM - PICKEN line:

Jean b 1798 youngest d/o Thomas & Agnes ANDREW PICKEN

She m our Robert GRAHAM (mis-spelled in the IGI as GRIM) 1 FEB 1819 in Kilmarnock, we trust.

They had 10 children, emigrated with about five in 1846 to NY & on to Ontario.

Their youngest son is our James & he moved to IA & we are in the US to this day.

Somewhere "in the stacks" I have the names of siblings (from the IGI) as the PICKEN line has researched this line and they provided a few details for our line, even though they spelled our Robert as GRIM.

The marriage cert 24 JAN 1840 of their oldest daughter b 1820 is "on BACK Street on GRAHAM land" and Euphemia m Thomas Stevenson, living on High Church or High Street in 1841 census. They emigrated 1851 (in both census records, April in Kilmarnock & OCT in Ontario).

Since you are living in the area ... could this Picken family be linked to your line?

Sheila
GRAHAM - PICKEN direct line

Your John married the year before and had about nine children as far as I can see. I have been attempting to go back to the generation before-trouble is there were two John Picken's born in Stewarton one abt 1785 & 1786 and I do not know which is which-do you know who your John's father was?
I still live in the Ayrshire area
Kind Regards,
Stuart Picken

I am 99% sure we are the same Pickens. Maybe the John Picken you talk about is a brother of the one I have - I have Andrew Picken who married Jean Watt in Stewarton in 1749, thenone of her sons Andrew who married Jean Wilson in 1777, then one of their sons Andrew Picken married Jean Watt in Stewarton 1802, then one of their sons James Picken, married Janet Latta, one of their daughters, Janet Latta Picken married John Smith (My Gt. grandmother and Gt. grandfather) and had a daughter called Janet Smith who married Robert George Drummond Hunter and my mother was born.

Who is linked to this line?

Our Robert GRAHAM (spelled GRIM on the IGI) m Jean PICKEN 1819 in Kilmarnock.

Our line owned millinery and hat shops for the next two generations ... and to this day, we have designers in the line.

Direct line emigrated to NY 1846, with about half of the ten known children. Later to Ontario ... with older siblings emigrating to Ontario & working in businesses of older cousins.

Our direct line then migrated to new land in the US ... siblings were split between the US & Ontario. Two may not have emigrated from Scotland.

Sheila
GRAHAM-PICKEN line of Kilmarnock, AYR
