Joseph Pickens

I have this newspaper obituary as follows.
Watseka Illinois Friday, June ?
Watseka Mourns The Passing Of Worthy Citizen

The death of Joseph Pickens, well known and respected Watseka plumber after a plucky struggle for life following two operations, despite the handicap of age, caused a general expression of sorrow from the people of the vicinity. Death occurred at the Iroquois Hospital, Wednesday evening, June 22, at about 4:40 o’clock.

Mr. Pickens, in his younger days, was a picture of stalwart manhood, proof against ill health. In later years, however, he began to fail until his condition became so serious that he was taken to the hospital where two operations were preformed for obstruction of the bowels.

Joseph Lee Pickens was born on a farm near Crescent City, January 1, 1858. Since his father and mother both died when he was but a child, their names have been lost from record. He spent his youth with relatives in that vicinity and about 1883 he was united in marriage with Emma Mae Flesher. Four children were born to this union: Earl, who passed away about six years ago, Fay of Watseka, Birdella of LaFayette, Ind., and Verner, who died in infancy.

Mrs.Pickens was called by death July 4, 1890, and in 1907 Mr. Pickens remarried to Mrs. Lena Martin who survives. Three children were born to this marriage, Joseph Jr., and twin daughters, Norma and Naomi, all of whom reside at home. Mr. Pickens is also survived by one half-brother, Charles A. Fletcher of Pearshall, Colorado, and by two step children, William M. Martin of Watseka and Mrs. Stella Martin Reeder of Chicago.

Mr. Pickens, after his first marriage, was engaged in farming near Crescent City for a number of years. About 1897, he moved to Watseka where he found occupation as a plumber, and served capably as city plumber for a number of years.

Funeral services will be held this (Friday) afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the Watseka Christian Church, conducted by Rev. R. N. Cloyd. Interment will be made in the Flesher cemetery near Crescent City.

Does anyone know what year Joseph Pickens died?

From the Mobile, Alabama Newspaper

Thursday, Sept. 21, 1911

• “When the swift approach of a train of cars made a smash-up seem inevitable in the freight yard of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad, near the terminal station, a hostler, Tom Pickens, in charge of a Southern railway switch engine, threw open the throttle, leaped from the cab, and the locomotive tore through the yard, finally leaving the rails at the roundhouse and burying its nose in the bank of a deep ditch.”

Not my line, just sharing.

Re: Joseph & Josephine Pickens, Ohio

Joseph & Josephine, along with several of their children, are listed in the 1850 census in Lebanon Township, Meigs County, Ohio. I have Joseph born about 1819, probably in Meigs County, to one of the 7 sons (James, Samuel, Thompson, Andrew John, Robert, William, and David) of John Pickens, born 1852 in Ballymoney Parish, County Antrim, Ireland. John was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. My rough guess is that Joseph may have been the son of David & Sarah (Anderson) Pickens, possibly born about 1819 in Meigs County. I concur with you on their children, although I also have a Bart F. (1861)and a Julia (1865).

I have Joseph marrying Samantha Moore on 9/1/1869 in Gallia County, Ohio. Joseph & Samantha are shown in the 1880 census in Rome Township, Lawrence County, Ohio. They may have had 4 children (Benjamin, Ella, John, & Joseph).

I hope this info is of help to you.

Re: Samuel T. & Jane Pickens 1880 Ohio Census Correction

This sounds like a cross of some similar but different information.

The Samuel & Jane Pickens that I have been tracing have the following children:
Johnathan C
Thomas M
Ellen A
William M
Richard A
James
Julius
All the children (and their mother, Jane) were born in North Carolina. Samuel's records show he was born in Alabama (Census records 1850 - 1870). The 1850 Census shows specifically Madison, Alabama.

The 1880 Census shows Samuel born in Ohio, but Jane & the remaining 4 children still report as being born in N.C.

So, with the history only reporting to Ohio in the latter part of Samuel's life, this may not be the same Samuel Pickens that you have traced.

I'm sure there is a connection since they are traced here in Ohio!

Let me know if you have any additional information that might connect any information.

Thanks!
Hi Melissa, my grandfather was Dougal P. Pickens son of William and Celia Pickens. Samuel's father was John Pickens married Nancy Carlisle in Ross county 1805Mar 14 by Wm Creighton. Nancy was the daughter of Andrew Carlisle his will can be forund in Ross county 1821. John died sometine around 17 April 1818 ( Ross County case 6006)and Nancy remarried Rev. William White 24 Feb. 1825. Ross County, Ohio Vol GC pg 018. You can find Vol 20-273-278 Ross County Court House seversl pages on her, when she remarried Mr. White had to sign he would not take her estate and it would go to the children. The case papers 6013 Ross County list Nancy guardian of children Elizabeth age 15, Samuel, Mary Ann Pickens and Andrew Pickens dated 18 March 1814.

I hope this fills in some of the missing pieces.
debbierobinett74@gmail.com

Hi Patricia,

My husband is of the same decent (Samuel, William, John M.) but his grandfather was John Franklin, Richard "Dick" William's brother.

I've had some difficulty with Samuel's search. I've found him listed as Samuel A and Samuel T but nothing leading to who his parents were. Also, on two different census records I found where he was listed as born in Madison, Alabama (1850 Census) and in Ohio (1880 Census).

Unfortunately, this time-frame (Samuel being being born in the early 1800's) makes it more challenging to find additional family members (brothers & sisters) to aid in the results of finding the names of the parents as well, but, I keep searching in hopes to finding additional connections.
Dear, Melissa,
I am a descendant of Samuel aned Jane Pickens. [Samuel, William S., John Mac, Richard William (my father)]. I can't find Samuel's parents. I had him down as Samuel A. Pickens, so maybe I will have better luck with Samuel T. If you have any information, it would be very helpful, and I would be glad to share all my info. Thanks,
Patti Pickens Canup

William Pickens

Elias Pickens, (b. 1800, New Jersey – d. 1888 Indiana) married Jemima Wimmer, (b. 1805 Pennsylvania, d. 1848 Indiana.) in Ross Twp, Butler, Ohio. In 1830 they were enumerated in Colerain, Hamilton, Ohio with 3 males under five years of age.

My Ancestor, William Pickens, b. 1828 Ohio, would qualify as one of these sons...............But then, there are 6 other families in 1830 Ohio who have at least one male under the age of five.
Thomas in Belmont County, James in Clermont County, William Jr. in Hamilton County (possibly connected to Elias and William Sr., also in Colerain, Hamilton County) and Jefferson, John and Joshua, all in Hocking County.

Since my ancestor is named William, I am leaning toward either Elias or William Jr., whom I believe are sons of William Sr. but I need a little help proving this.

I first found William in 1850 Noble County Indiana age 22 a laborer and labled a pauper, with wife Margaret Ann age 17. Both born in Ohio. They were found again in 1860 in Kosciusko Co., Indiana.
1870 found Margaret alone in Kosciusko Co. with children Henry, Delzina, and an 11 month old child who's name is unreadable. Delzina is my Ggreat grandmother.

I have tried to find William and Margaret's origins for a long time now and have had very little luck. I hope there is someone out there who may be able to shed enough light on this so I can at least see the end of the tunnel.

Believe me, any help at all will be greatly appreciated

Thank You

Reese Spicer
Idaho

William Smith Pickens was my great-great grandfather (1823-1907) and you probably have stumbled on to the most unknown thing about him. He seems to have functioned as a banker in the northern part of Anderson county, especially after the war. I have dozens of mortgage type documents showing how he loaned money here and there, etc etc. He indeed is buried in Pickens Cemetery on our homeplace on Three and Twenty Rd. about 7 miles south of Easley. He's buried beside his 2nd wife, and his first wife is also in Pickens Cemetery. His oldest son, Robert Welborn Pickens is also there: he was last upper SC Confederate Veteran, dieing in 1948. I have pictures and if you'll send me particulars, I'll see if your interested parties are in any of WSP's "banking documents". If they are, I'll be happy to send them to you. They should be with their families, so to speak. Email:crgarrison@hughes.net

Re: Capt. Joseph Pickens

The data I have (which I think is probably true) shows Capt Joseph as an older brother of the General. Capt Joseph married a cousin, Eleanor Pickens, 1 Sep 1760 in the Waxhaws, probably a daughter of John and Eleanor (Baskin?) Pickens. John and Joseph's father (Andrew) were brothers. It appears that Joseph and Eleanor had Eleanor Jane ( ), Joseph Jr (probably the youngest son), John, Israel, Andrew, Ann, and William. I have very little info on these children but do have some. I assume you know Capt Joseph was killed in the Rev War 17 Jun 1781 at the siege of the fort at 96 (with Gen. Greene, and all his forces). But I do not know his burial site. Most everyone in my part of the world(northwest SC) is more interested in his more famous brother. Good to find someone interested in one of the neglected members of the family. If this is of help and more could be helpful, don't hesitate to email me with specifics and I'll be glad to reply: crgarrison@hughes.net

Wow! Haven't heard from anyone of this branch of the family in a long time. The governor's grandfather and my 5thgreat grandfather (Robert) were brothers and came from Ireland (we think) to PA circa 1710-1720 (Mother, Father, and brothers and sisters we believe). Slowly but surely most of the children came south and wound up in NW South carolina, but seems like Israel wound up in western NC or maybe even TN.
So I'm acutally from Robert, but its good to hear from a "cousin". I know very little about Israel's branch, but if I can be of service, please ask: crgarrison@hughes.net
You can look at my family tree for further info. Lemons Family Tree. I am looking for info on Alabama Carolina Ziegler. She married Samuel Ross Pickens they married somewhere around 1878 is the info I have. It is confusing because Minnie was born 2/9/1876. She married Graham Steed Sanders in 2/14/1895. These Pickens are all my Great Uncles and Aunts. My mother was Vivian Lou Sanders born in 1905 to Minnie and Graham. If I can be of further help let me know.

Andrew was the son of the famous South Carolina Revolutionary War Partisan leader, Gen. Andrew Pickens. Francis was Andrew Jr's son. If my memory is correct, Francis was the Governor of SC at the start or just before the start of the Civil War.
If you want more on this family, check my family tree (it is named Carl Robert Garrison), as it has dates, wives, children, etc, too many to repeat.
If I can be of further help, email me.
crgarrison@hughes.net

Samuel Pickens (1824-1849) and Samuel Levi Pickens/Prudence Knowles

I am a descendant of Samuel Pickens, born 1824 in Bartholomew County, Indiana, 1824, and died in Davis County, Iowa, abt 1849. Married Sarah Ann Walker, 1842.

He is commonly considered the son of Samuel Levi Pickens and Prudence Knowles Pickens. My question is: why? What is the proof, documentation, etc? I'm not saying there isn't any, but it seems that someone supposed it and typed it up that way and everyone has played follow the leader since.

Is there any probate to make the connection? Are there any land records that document Samuel Levi and Prudence moving from Meigs County, Ohio, to Bartholomew County, Indiana, and then on to the Davis/Van Buren County line in southern Iowa? A few Pickens ended up in Davis/Van Buren, but I still don't see where anything is known for sure about how they all tie together.

Am I missing something?

Thanks!!!
